Well I never suspected your layouts were in two completely different house’s, that certainly makes filming more challenging. Another great look behind the scenes, I can only hope I can achieve half of what you have.👍🏻
The most fascinating is how really small this layout is when viewed in its entirety in this sort of behind the scene making of, while seen on your other videos it looks almost huge, thanks to the very clever arrangement of the setting, the general landscaping and a perfectly mastered photo framing and use of perspective. It's really like a film set shot by a very talented cinematographer.
Really great looking Layout mate, and with it being the BEAUTIFUL YORKSHIRE DALES, and me been a Proud YORKSHIRE man, is a bonus, again ACE set up ..Will and Elaine Leeds.
You’re a total genius. So, so talented. I thought both layouts were in one place as did others lol. I think both layouts are so full of life, details and cameos. Each a wonderful world.
Tour completed! I couldn’t possibly manage the fiddle yard behind the desk! I’d end up getting stuck! Very good use of space though. Fantastic work. Thanks for sharing. Roy.
Thanks for sharing the videos of creating the second layout. I'm always fascinated by how modelers create landscapes and structural details. You've created two lovely layouts.
If you had not said that you had two layouts, I like the others in the comments would have thought of it as one. Great scenery, I love the detail that you have already put on it and some more people will make it even better. Martin, (Thailand)
What a remarkable set up. No wonder its difficult to understand sometimes. To see where and how these layouts are placed the video results are even more amazing. To keep modeling standards and colouring the same in two locations is also a credit to your skills. Thanks for sharing these Lewis 👍👍👍👍👍
What it beautiful layout! I love the way you do your videos because it’s hard to believe that these are not real full size trains - you are an amazing videographer.
I love the way it fits into the space . I KNEW you had built the storage yard behind the furniture !!....................and your trees are beautiful , well done Lewis .
Never knew you had two different locations for the layouts. Yet this 'small' layout is the perfect example of what a beginner's layout project should be. Simple yet enjoyable, easy to upgrade if wanted (for example the pocket track near the canal I would have extended to a quarry made by taking.g over part of the hill with two tracks, one for loading and one for empties, then a third track with a small loco shed for a shunter like a pannier or a dreary shunter. May be my plan for my future N scale exhibition layout once I got my wheelchair and a disabled person adapted home... Misslethwaithe is definitely an excellent inspiration for anyone who wants to start in the hobby. You can be really proud of yourself, you really promote the hobby in the best possible way!
How amazing that you do all the transporting of the stock between your 2 properties. It certainly had never showed. Brilliant having your 2nd layout in your office.
Greetings from Minnesota, I may have 0% knowledge of the railroad being modeled or 0% knowledge of the area being modeled. But I always like to aee what other people in other parts of the world are doing in the hobby. Have a great day everyone
How interesting to have a overview and a look behind the scenes - most video's on model trains omit this and concentrate too much on details to the detriment of the overview. Awesome layout, and so detailed.... wonderful work....
Shows what can be achieved with a quite simple track plan. Now I must confess that your railways have inspired me to build a different layout after my house move. Always used a flat baseboard arrangement but this one will be an attempt to cut a line of railway into the ground that existed before the surveyor came. Yours is the target for which I am aiming and its an exciting time.
..And just like everyone else..I thought the two layouts were connected. Like yours my layout is on the floor too. Literally!! A la Sams trains. Very nice look around.. thank you. All the best.
Excellent stuff, I like both your layouts. This is basically a shelf layout. It's given me some ideas as I'm starting a shelf layout. I have about 6500mm x 400mm, with a right angle turn going to an area of 2000mm x 500mm similar to your under the desk mini fiddle yard, where I can store trains. Cheers.
Brilliant Lewis - Makes us realise your considerable photographic skills all the more. We always enjoy watching us in our most perfect holiday location - Teresa & Paul@Findhorn Light Rly.
Much makes sense now and given your own place it is obvious why you built the second layout. Your efforts to film between the two deserve recognition, well done your patience is amazing. 👏👏👍
Hi Lewis, that was a really great video describing the second layout. I knew you had built it in a bedroom/office not the attic, but I didn't realise it was in a completely different building................when I see a train on one layout then the other, I will now have to look at the whole thing in a new light..............Such dedication to get the continuity right..............Thanks again, all the best and take care Dave.
As stated many, many times before. A brilliant look behind two fantastic layouts, Lewis. Such a great feeling to get a look into the unseen. Always a pleasure!
Hahah Lewis, it just dawned on me your parents are very kind to you ;) the instant I bought a house mine pretty much turned up with all my "belongings" about a month or so after moving in lol 🤣
Lewis, I think you stumped many of us with the locations of your two layouts, it must be a daunting task to shuttle between them and also keeping in mind the storyline and movement of the trains. As always, so enjoyable to watch your videos of both layourts. Scenics reminds me of where I am currently living in Ceylon. Cheers, Michael.
Great video Lewis, love the way you have used the space to your advantage just shows what you can achieve with some clever design and thinking outside the box 👏
Another cracking video lewis of the two great layouts the fact that the two of them are in different properties makes your editing even more impressive fantastic job and thank you for sharing this wonderfull set up 😎😎😎
Great video, Lewis! Thanks so much! But I'm worried you won't have anywhere else to build! You have to keep building somewhere! You are so good at it! Don't stop now. The look you create can be expanded indefinitely and made into modules. But you still need more space. All the best! Keep it up!
Thanks very much Greg! That’s a good point, there is an old textile mill very near the house, I wonder if I could use that - that’s what the chap did that built Heaton Lodge Junction!
Bonjour Lewis, A need to thank you ! I learned so much from you and sure I'm not the only one. I'm in the process of 'renovating' the landscaping on my layout and applying your fundamental techniques to make it look natural and well balanced. Only recently - by watching and rewatching your video's - it just jumped at me that you only use a few colours and products to compose the total 'scene' where-in your trains run. My mistake: to many different colours and textures so it doesn't 'harmonise'. As always: less is more ! But your talent and skills walk in front of you and you can be proud of two magnificent Model Railways. A reference in the hobby! So thank you very much for showing and sharing and I wish you many happy 'model railway' hours. Cheers, Filip
Thanks Filip, I’m glad you liked it! You’re spot on there, I did the exact same thing trying lots of different colours textures etc and came to the same realisation. I wonder if it’s a scale thing where because we often look at the layout from a distance, it looks more natural with fewer colours… as in if you were viewing a scene in real life from 30-40 metres away, everything begins to blend together the further away you get.
@@MouldyRaspberry Thanks for your reply Lewis! Yes, this must be the 'golden rule' when landscaping a model railway. Like you mention: viewing a scene in relation to distance. You could do a video on the subject and point this out ? I guess many model railroaders would appreciate and learn from this. Success & cheers, Filip
That was a surprise to hear the layouts are in different locations. Another great and informative video. Goes to show with some thought what can be done in the space you have available. Thanks for sharing . Loved it. Jeff
Hi Lewis I thoroughly enjoyed part 2, it looks great in your office room! I have taken much inspiration for my Settle Carlisle based layout over the past 18 months from yours and your last two videos have given me many more ideas and tips for the modelling of my layout! Cheers Gary
Really nice video Mr Mouldy. As you know I am pretty keen on things looking authentic (49 years on railway before retirement) and you have certainly done an excellent job here. I was a Track Engineer and your p way is pretty spot on. Keepup the good work. Regards, John.
Impressive, informative and, as always, full of ideas to borrow for one’s own (under construction). Thanks for sharing. Great video for a stunning little layout. If I may suggest some Modelu figures..., they aren’t cheap but they’re worth every penny. Your layout deserves them (and the other way round too!)
Gonna stick my neck out here - my hubby and I are the two figures by the canal cottage. They are Modelu standard figures that looked so much like us, with our plentiful paunches, that all I needed to do was add my obligatory hat and hey presto - as near to us as makes no difference. Thanks for that Lewis - Teresa@Findhorn Light Rly.
Hi Lewis. Great stuff again. Well you caught me by surprise when you revealed that the two layouts were in different locations. But saying that due to your good editing skills, I don't think anybody would have realised. I did watch this on the Premier earlier, but I just had to watch this again. Both thumbs-up from me 👍👍. Cheers Chris.
Also by the house at the end of the layout, you could maybe at a stone wall with a gap at the end of the driveway which would give the impression of the road being just outside.
Another brilliant video 👍🏻although I’ve watched the build series on this it’s great to see it close up 👍🏻 Inspiring stuff and definitely given me some ideas..thanks for sharing
Chociaż nie rozumiem, to bardzo się cieszę że mogłem zobaczyć ten wspaniały materiał, oraz podziwiać te wszystkie fascynujące i ekscytujące rzeczy. Super 👍 🚂🚃🚃🚃. (h).
This is a wonderful layout!! I wish I could afford the space for something as large as that!!! Mine’s a micro layout that I have dubbed ‘Walmington-on-Sea’ after the location of the old television series Dad’s Army. I have all the appropriate vehicles to put there as well!!
Thank you for the tour, really great stuff. Have you considered putting a rail up on that beam where the lights are? You could fix a light to the rail and power it in some way to move along the rail (would one of those camera dolly rails work?). Couple that with a colour changing smart bulb and you could do a day/night timelapse with the sun bulb moving across the ceiling sky.
Very nice! Both of your layouts look very realistic. You mentioned you are making the trees yourself. Could you make a video about that and show the technique you're applying? Regards, Paul
It says a lot about your filming, I never thought they were two separate layouts never mind that they were in two separate houses. I was judging the size of the layout and I worked it out to be about 10 foot by 2 foot plus storage yard, am I right? Both your layouts are absolutely brilliant, keep up the good work. Thanks, Mel
This is a very nice little layout Mouldy, I enjoyed the videos of the process of building it!! Did British Railways ever use "Armstrong turntables" at the end of branch lines?? One would look awesome at the end of your station platform to turn your Steam around!!!
Hi Lewis another great great video of your layout i think you have done very good job of it and without being too fussy ,again less is more as you said back in the day. thank you Lewis. PS could please tell what size/part number you used for your kadee couplings as I want to change mine over from the Nem pocket and some old Hornby are you on face book.?
Thanks very much Tony, appreciate it. I’ve used a mix of the different sizes - I’ve found each loco, wagon etc needs a different one, depending on how far back the NEM socket is set. I’d maybe get a pack of each and experiment to see how you get on. I’ve used mainly 18s and 19s though.
Re location, anything on the floor these days would seriously stuff me up (I bought a scissor lift for my car DIY) so well impressed you manage it. Osborn Models are lovely ppl to deal with, highly recommended. Your eye to capture the real thing and then building stuff is great eg love the two cottages and signal box as I hv been considering doing something similar after years of building std kits which I find v enjoyable. Do you identify prototypes then order the relevant Wills parts? PS coffee stirrers...thought it was just me that uses them 😋
Thanks Paul, appreciate it. I like the standard kits as well. For the cottages, I don’t really look at prototypes but I just have a standard way of making them - I think that’s why all of mine look very similar 🤣 I just order a couple of packs of stone sheets, a couple of packs of roof sheets, then the windows and door & drainpipes packs and that’s enough to make a couple of cottages.
Hi there. Great layout. At 1:51 timestamp in this video there are 3 brown vans immediately in front of the grey brakevan. Can you tell me what brand of wagons these vans are please?
Yeah, I thought both layouts were in close proximity, makes the whole thing more challenging, I can't say I am impressed by the fiddle yard, but the rest of it has given me some additional ideas... a very good layout...
Thank you - absolutely, I guess I can’t complain getting to have two layouts! I can understand that- although it serves its purpose very well and that’s what matters.
Both layouts are brilliant, very detailed and would not look out of place at the major exhibitions such as Warley. And props to your film editing as well, the transitions between layouts are seamless, I like presumably many others thought that Misselthwaite was just an extension of the main layout (I also assumed the whole thing was a very long end-to-end layout rather than an end-to-end and a continuous run)! One thing I'm curious about: how many locomotives do you have in your stable?
Thanks Dominic, appreciate it. I think a lot of people though that! I think around 25 at this point, although a sell a few on every now and then to make room for something else.
Thanks John. Good question! So I run whichever three trains I have made up out, run them round (or do some shunting if it’s a goods train), and then run them back into the storage yard. When they’re all in there I’ll either reverse them out and back in so all three are the right way round and ready to go, or I’ll just change the loco if I fancy running something else.
I`ve watched this many times and for me the countryside modelling is the best I have seen, perfection....
Thanks David 👍🏻

Thanks Mel, appreciate it! You’re close - the scenic section is 16 ft (2 ft wide) and the storage yard is about 6/7ft I think.
This is a very nice little layout Mouldy, I enjoyed the videos of
the process of building it!!
Did British Railways ever use
"Armstrong turntables" at the
end of branch lines?? One would
look awesome at the end of your
station platform to turn your
Steam around!!!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed them! I think there are a few that did, especially the longer branch lines. I agree it would look the part!
Eee, you're a clever lad. 🙂
Ha thanks!
Hi there. Great layout.
At 1:51 timestamp in this video there are 3 brown vans immediately in front of the grey brakevan. Can you tell me what brand of wagons these vans are please?
Thanks Rick 👍🏻 Those three are Bachmann box vans.
Another nice layout. Would you be moving your large out to your own house in the future.
Thanks Ian. I don’t think my house is big enough for that layout as well!
As ever another great video Lewis. A brilliant location for your second layout. Where will the third one be ?
Thanks Alistair - I think it’s safe to say there will be!
@@MouldyRaspberry you need a giant helix running between all.floors!
A fantastic an beautiful layout !! Impressive. Did you also build a model railway for custumers?
Thank you! 👍🏻 No I haven’t done that yet.
Work of art that layout pal,is the plan to run it round the room at some point
Or is that as far as you go
Cheers Michael - it’s always a possibility, I might end up doing that one day 🤣
As always this looks a lovely layout, and so convincing! However, I’m puzzled! How do you cope in the fiddle yard without a run round?
Thanks John. Good question! So I run whichever three trains I have made up out, run them round (or do some shunting if it’s a goods train), and then run them back into the storage yard. When they’re all in there I’ll either reverse them out and back in so all three are the right way round and ready to go, or I’ll just change the loco if I fancy running something else.
