How to install a 242 transfer case in a Jeep Grand Cheorkee. Here are the steps I went through to install the rebuilt 242 transfer case with the swapped input shaft from a 249 transfer case. We start by placing the 242 transfer case on a jack to lift it into place. The transfer case weighs close to 90 pounds, so it's a good idea to have a buddy help you lift it into place. Once you have it positioned and the input shaft engaging the transmission, it's just a matter of placing a few of the transfer case mounting bolts to hold it in place. Some of these transfer case mounting bolts can be very difficult to reach. I cover how I accessed them better in this video: How to remove transfer case.

Once it's in position, I show attaching the speed sensor, shift indicator, vent, and other parts necessary for the transfer case swap.

great video. I highly recommend putting the mopar recommended fluid in it though, these transfer cases are real picky and the wrong fluid can cause prematute failure.
Bearings and seals are not picky on what trans fluid is used in anyway.
swapping mine out tomorrow, and this video is great!!!!
That's awesome! Good luck on the project. Be sure to subscribe to catch the rest of my videos. I was actually working on the shift linkage video tonight.
Love the detail with your installations!
Kay wow thanks. Your making this swap in a lot easier
Awesome! You're welcome
Great video. Very informative
When putting the newish t case on did you have to use a gasket sandwiched in between the tranny and t case? Also I have a 96 limited 5.2 with 249. Would it be a bolt on and plug and play for me?
Thanks for the step by step guide.
Anything for you Ninja man!
I see you put a 242 internal slip yoke in your v8 grand cherokee in place of a 249 internal slip yoke. The rear driveshaft from the original v8 249 setup worked on your now v8 242 setup?
I want to do a 249 to 242 swap but mine is a internal slip 249 and external slip 242.
i have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee v8 4.7 with the 247j transfer case and i want to swap it for a 242 will i need to do any adjust to it?
I want to put my 89' xj 242 into my 04 lj, what do i need to swap? i want full time option in my Lj.
help
Did you have any issues with the front driveline rubbing on the crossmember? I did this swap and my driveline rubs
How do you know whether or not the gear set from the 249 input will work in the 242?
I have a 242 tc. What size allen is the oil plugs! Will dexron iii multi use oil work?
Hi. I do have a dodge nitro 3.7 I'm looking the way to find some transfercase Hi & lo that fit my nitro, do you have any idea? Best regards from Costa Rica
loved the 3 videos on the swap. couple questions, are the t case to trans bolts 9/16s? and what are the ones on the driveshafts?
Ummm.... I don't remember off the top of my head.. at work right now.
JeepSolid alright, definetly liked the video. basically the same stuff to put in the 231 right?
Hello. I have a 1995 Grand Cherokee ZJ V8 5.2L. I would like to change my Np249 transfer case for a Np242 transfer case. Can you tell me if the change is made directly without modification? That is, just swap the transfer boxes. Thank you
Bonjour.
Was the rear shaft the same length when going from the 249 to 242? I was under the impression that the rear shaft would need to be shortened.
I have a 96 ZJ. It used to have a 249,I swapped in a 242 from a 97. It did have an external output shaft for the rear drive shaft. 96 to 98 V8 drive shafts are the same. I just put some grease on the drive shaft yoke splines and bought a rubber bellow that's for a 97-98. the rubber bellow is to keep the grease in and dirt and water out of the yoke. I used the shifter linkage off the donor Grand Cherokee. I also used the speed sensor off the old 249. I had to get into the dash a little bit to swap some wires for the 4x4 indicator lights to work I also grabbed the Select Track bezel for the shifter. Idk about other years? But if you're swapping a 96 to 98 everything will bolt right up as long as you get a 242 from a 96 to 98.
Did you need to put a liquid gasket, or silicone or anything to seal between the replacement transfer case, and the transmission?
+Erdreik nope. Stays dry
@@JeepSolidhey man been following your channel almost as long as I've been jeeping, thanks for all the help along the way.
what if the shop that removed the case took a jackhammer to the mating surface, should I use a gasket then?
I've got to resurface so it sits flush to the transmission.
I have a 5.9 limited grand Cherokee with a 249 and would like to swap a 242. How do I know which 242 to get so that it works with my setup. Thanks 👍
I have a video where I do a side by side comparison of the 249 and 242. I mention in there years that are compatible.
Honestly id keep the 249 replace the viscous coupler. The 242 is not a superior transfercase. Bot sure why so many people like it h
Just to flip fron 2-4wd. Its less work replacing a viscous coupler than finding a hopefully good 242 in the junkyard.. and buying it.
Not sure you can keep the 5.9 drive shaft either which is ment to handle the torque those engines put out
WHAT ARE THE THE PROBLEMS symptoms WHEN IT GOES BAD I HAVE A VIBRATION IN THE BODY AROUND 55 ? COULD IT BE IT
You get binding of the front drive shaft. It can be seen with uneven tire wear, inability to make tight turns, popping/gears slipping when making sharp turns in circles, tires skipping as they are not able to rotate independently.
I'm trying to put my transfer case back in my xj and I'm having a hella hard time. Even with different jacks I can't get it seated. Not fun at all.
The input shaft may be twisted a bit and not lining up. Helps to have the car in neutral (don't run over yourself. Chock the wheels well). Last one I did, we had to actually turn the transfer case a bit until it caught the input shaft.
JeepSolid Thanks! Was able to put the TC back in yesterday. I ended up jacking the Jeep a little higher than usual, and used a transmission jack to get it in range. With this little more breathing room I was able to extend my arms more and sort of spin or tilt it like you said until it seated and went in. I kept it in park w e brake though with wheels chocked to try and be as safe as possible. Thanks again.
could you guys tell me what year/model I need to pull the 242 from so the output shaft will match on my 1997 jeep grand Cherokee limited with the 5.2. looked all over people give different answers. also I want to switch to u joint front drive is it the driveshaft or axle yolk I'd need and how would I measure the torque for the pinion nut. thanks for any help you can provide.
+Highclass Vape 242 transfer cases had a gear cut change in May 1994. Have to look at the tag on the case, don't go by the year of the vehicle. Post May 94 should work in a 97.
Awesome much appreciated. Thanks for a clear answer.
Thanks for info. Post May 94 242.
Or... you could just buy a new viscous coupler pop the cover off replace it with a new one. And Keep the superior 249 lol
But you can't use a locking differential with the 249. It will cause serious binding problems. Most people who swap these out probably want to use a lunch box locker or a limited slip differential for off road use and mud. Another thing they I think failed to mention in this video. The Cherokees that came with Quadra Trac had CV axles in the front. Might have to swap those out for ones that have U joints. I've heard it sometimes causes a vibration in the steering if the CV axles aren't swapped out. My Buddy has a 98 with the 242 stock. His has U joints. Mine is a 96 with the 249,mine has CV joints.
