Welcome to part 4 of my first playthrough of Dragon Age: Origin's -
On today's episode during out travels to Redcliff, Alistair reveals his true identity, claiming to be the son of King Maric, uncovering why the Arl Eamon took him in. Yet, not long after we arrive in Redcliff, we quickly discover the village is plagued with the walking dead and our hopes to speak with to Arl Eamon are placed on hold as the dead walk amongst the living, puppeteered by demons from beyond.

as a fellow compulsive looter, a trick I learned is when you're full up, just equip everything you can, even if it's not good. Make sure every ring, belt, and necklace slot is full lol (including for companions). that frees up a couple inventory spots, and then you can sell them when you get back to a merchant. Thanks for sharing, this game is so much fun and your first impressions are also fun!
So in big fights, pause and check on everyone and direct them to drink a health potion, glad to see you doing that later as this is a tough fight. You can also check on your allies with the blue rings fighting with you and do heal on them. Unfortunately I think you were burning them. Murdock dies easily, I must have done heal on him at least 4 times.
Don't forget your lyrium potions to give you manner to gain your skills back without waiting.
Morrigan must be set to the wrong thing as she was standing around doing nothing for a lot of the fight. I also notice your own character standing still and getting hit, again pause is your friend if you are looking for spells. :)
While Isolde has done many things wrong I can't help but to feel for her, at the end of the day she was just a mother who didn't want to lose her baby.

Fyi, Sten is actually a Qunari. The qunari will look much different in the later games because they couldnt do it in this game.
Yeah he's supposed to be a giant isn't me, I was a bit confused by it as I didn't think he looked that much taller 😅
@@kiki_malikinot a giant, no!:) his race is just taller than the others, but they're not technically giants. I'm not sure if you'd classify it as a spoiler but just in case you want to discover their future appearance later on by yourself, stop reading my comment now!:)
Qunari tend to have horns on their heads, similar to a bull or ram, and are taller than most races. They're all also quite buff, appearance-wise, in comparison to most. You'll see them proper in future titles but yeah - sadly their future canon appearance didn't make it into DAO

Also a couple quick combat tips: Remember to use Lyrium potions when you and your other mages are out of mana. Lyrium potions are easy to get ahold of either by buying them cheaply or crafting them (same goes for health potions). Second, try to always have your character Elhara using her staff's ranged attack on enemies in between her spells or when she is out of mana. A mage's staff ranged attack doesn't cost mana, and the damage can add up quite a bit over time. - Additionally, your inventory seems almost full very frequently which may make it harder for you collect more loot that you will find on your adventure. Try to sell anything you don't need or that you have multiples of at any merchant you find. I usually go back to merchants in areas I'm in multiple times to sell off items I don't need. I believe Bodahn the dwarf at your camp will also sell you a Backpack once you have enough coin, which will increase the size of your inventory significantly, making it one of the best investments in the game. - One last tip: If you're really low on inventory space and you don't have access to a nearby merchant, take items from your inventory that are wearable, armor, weapons, rings et., and equip them to you and your other party members until all the slots on each character are filled, including the second weapon set for each character.

In combat the enemy assess who is the most dangerous and threatening. This holds true for both you and the enemy, kill the mages first, then the archers, then the highest ranked, then the most health. You will be chased after every battle.
As long as he has not used it (and has it after lvl up), Allistair can use taunt to take some heat off. Enemies will still target you at fight start, and do ignore that many times.
Hi, good fun! You did something to Morrigan, because she is just standing still all the time in combat. Also, you can use pause to optimize your own effectiveness in combat. Pause while you switch targets, or select spells, and such 😃
Yeah I think I was messing around with the tactics but I think I may just switch them back to default 😬
@@kiki_maliki Sadly, Shapechanger just isn't a great specialisation. It makes a mage a frontline fighter when a mage's tactics are all generally about staying back and slinging spells from range. Like you had Morrigan's tactics as Defensive, which is sensible for a mage. But it also means she doesn't act aggressively wen she's a bear, which is why she just stands there doing nothing.

@@kiki_maliki I've beaten this game like 9 times, I always forget about the knights too, lol. Btw getting the threaten ability on Allistar is helpful, it keeps most enemies off of you and focused on him.

Not gonna lie, I think that battle to defend Redcliff might be the hardest fight in the game if you go there first. Its not so bad if you've levelled up a bit elsewhere. Good job making it through, even if every other defender did die in the process. 🤣
You always find a way to make me feel better 😅 because honestly I did struggle with that battle and basically got all those poor soldiers killed by just trying to survive 🤣
Oh I was so hoping you'd pick the "bastard" line when Alistair brought up the fact he's King Maric's son. It would've amused him. The "royal bastard" bit is supposed to clue players in that it's said as a joke, but I guess a lot of people miss that and just think it's being mean. This is the downside to an unvoiced protagonist.
I so feel your frustration with not being able to open chests and such yourself -- I always play a rogue in Dragon Age games because of this lmao Like really you couldn't give us a rogue companion before Leliana?? (Doesn't help I missed her in my first playthrough, but I think I played a rogue that first time anyway).
I'm forgetting to comment on some of these, but I've been really enjoying these! Linked it to some friends as well -- your excitement and complete engagement with the story takes me back!
The reason Teagan went was a slim hope of making the 'evil force' potentially complacent so you could potentially manage something. He's being bait and knows he is likely going to his death. He's doing it for his family.
A bit of tactical advice: Your AOE spells, like Flame Blast, Fireball, Cone of Cold, Shock, etc are Friend or Foe AOE spells so use with caution or you will freeze, fry or electrocute allies and party members in addition to the enemies.
Remember to put points into a Rogue's cunning and lockpicking skills when possible.

You're right that Duncan has lots of layers, he's actually present in one of the books as well. Also, you need to use injury kits, not health poultices, if you wanna heal the wounds (debuffs). Also, knights do help if you open the gates during the fight :)

Great job. You face 7 Revanants throughout the game, as you see, it takes all the party to focus just on him, keep out of his reach.
I would recomend when going to the Circle of Magi to get a guide for a certain section of the quest. There is a portion where not having one can get tedious and frustrating when navigating around. Also bringing Sten to the area outside the Circle would be good as their is a portion of his companion quest there.
on my seventh replay, and I’m on the same spot as you in this video right now
Landmark Tree: If you have your dog with you when you click on this, he will pee on it and mark the surrounding area as his territory. This will give him an advantage in any combat in that area. There are other Landmark items in different areas, usually trees, but not always! (You might have to take control of your dog, and click on the tree as him, but I'm not 100% sure about that now.)

I like all dragon age games, but 1 thing I wish they would have kept from origins is the dark and depressing aesthetic. The fun moment really hit harder that way.

Obviously you (and your characters) can't be good at everything/able to do everything so early on; try to have patience with them :)
Due to being terrible at keeping an eye on everyone's health, I create a tactic where they automatically drink a health potion if they fall below 25% HP. The tactics are fiddly at first, but you'll get the hang of it. I dislike Passive, Defensive and Aggressive because the first two mean barely attacking autonomously and the third option makes them clear off for the hills chasing enemies that they can't handle alone.

the Connor choice is where you can get the Blood Mage specialization. I'll bury how to get it under a Read More in case you want to figure it out for yourself:

once you go to the Mage Tower and get their help, you'll have the opportunity to go into the Fade to save Connor. when you finally come face-to-face with the demon possessing him, agree to make a deal with her and choose "I want Power". she'll then teach you how to do blood magic in exchange for laying dormant within Connor and emerging at some point in the future. if you don't want that outcome but still want to use blood magic, make a hard save before you talk to the demon, make the Power choice, and then reload once you get it unlocked and make the choice you actually want to make. you'll get the opportunity to pick a specialization at levels 7 and 14. Blood Magic is by far the most powerful mage specialization so it's definitely worth it in my opinion.
EDIT: Remember. it has to be your character that goes into the Fade. if you let any other mage go in there, they'll flat out refuse the deal and kill the demon so you'll miss out on that specialization.
Blood Mage is really cool, but I prefer Arcane Warrior myself.
@@mithrandir3300 Combining both is the greatest. But I tend to get Blood Mage first as it unlocks some additional conversational options.
There was originally going to be two more human origins barbarian and commoner you would have been from redcliff and learned your skills from your parents who fought in the war

Kiki, now that Redcliffe is safe from the nightly undead attacks. You can go other places and come back to Redcliffe later on to finish the Connor and Eamon problem. Denerim is a location to go to early on.

Don't talk to Slim in Denerim until Ehlara has gotten 1 skill in Steal skill tree.
idk if you've figured it out by the time you're playing in real time, but the reason the enemies are so "obsessed" with your character is because you're the only one who's doing damage to them. None of your companions are attacking unless they're attacked first, and you need to change that in the tactic tab.
But anyway, glad that you're invested in the story! Hope you're enjoying it even more until the end.

I think it is possible to avoid activating the Revenant, if you stay by the entrance to the courtyard, and equip everyone with a range weapon, while you kill the archers on the stairs
There was originally going to be a commoner origin (your dad would have been a veteran of the rebellion) from Redcliffe I wonder which characters you would have known?
I'm stupidly amused by the fact you HEARD characters in-game pronounce Jowan's name and still insist on "Joe-uh." It's not actually that hard - "Jow" rhymes with "cow" or "now."

btw I don't know if you have tried equipping the "Warden's Oath" necklace to your character, but it gives a pretty nice boost to constitution. You may have another necklace you prefer for Elhara, I just know that one is quite helpful in my experience.

How- where?
When considering the equipment for the team, go for protection, thus highest ARMOR. Magical items may have lower armor if they provide other benefits. You want them to withstand a double strike from a heavy sword without having to constantly heal them or drinking health potions.
Not necessarily true. A character that uses dexterity and lots of manoeuvres (like a rogue archer or double wielder) can actually benefit way more from light armour. Wearing a full set of light leather armour means your character will have way less fatigue and thus will lose stamina far less quickly, meaning they can use their abilities for way longer. In fact light armour can let your character have a NEGATIVE fatigue bonus, meaning all special abilities cost less stamina to use than normal.
Plus the higher defense bonus it gives means enemies will miss you more often. Combine that with a very high Dex (also increasing defense) and some magic defense increasing items, and enemies will miss more than they hit.
On top of that, characters that wear light armour are less threatening, and so enemies will tend to not attack them first if there's other more threatening (aka heavenly armoured) ones around.
Heavy armour does the exact opposite. It increases fatigue, and thus stamina use, and while it increases armour, it doesn't increase defense as much. This means that while attacks that hit will do less damage while wearing heavy armour, far more attacks will effectively hit. And because they are more threatening, most enemies will attack them first.
And lastly, light armour increases your stealth, so you'll be far more likely to do a sneak attack on unsuspecting enemies, doing extremely high damage on the first hit.
I've played a few games in Dao with my character as a dual wielding rogue, zevran the same, leliana as an archer, and then a 4th character (usually morrigan or Wynne). And when equipped with light armour, rogues can be extremely deadly. The low fatigue means they can keep going for much longer with their special manoeuvres than for example Alistair or sten would, and the high defense means they barely get hit at all.
No, equipping heavy armour is definitely NOT always the best idea AT ALL.
@@johanwittens7712 We know that because we have played the game many times. She is just considering the tier of the item to consider if it is better. For a new player, best advice is protection until they learn more about the game. Notice she is almost constantly drinking health potions.
My favorite part is this grey warden getting everyone together to fight the undead. Helping them repair their arms, forcing the merchant to not hide, helping family, and all around being a great leader. Then the undead comes and she burns everyone with her magic. Killing almost everyone herself, hahaha. Truly a GREY Warden.
I hope this doesn't come across like criticism. I thoroughly enjoy the play through and no notes. Just making commentary for the algorithm.

Morrigan can be a bit of a dick, it's really her social / political naivete I suppose.
Landmark trees are for Bean to pee on to give it bonuses.
One thing you might not have noticed: if you put the same type and tier of armour, boots and gloves on a character they get an armour set bonus.
One thing that is not too obvious at this stage is that your squad gets bonuses the more they approve of you, so it's helpful to work towards getting high approval with all of them. You can "cheat" with gifts. Be warned, some gifts are not appreciated by the squad so they give negative approval.
Technically the best party comp is one warrior one rogue and two mages, esp if one of the mages is more of a support / crowd control mage and the other is damage. But if you are finding the combat reasonably easy you can just go with solo mage, though two rogues would be second best one ranged and one melee. Range focussed rogues have some strong abilities.
I can’t remember if you mentioned but do you plan on playing through before Veilguard?

Don't worry about approval from team. The chantry believers Leliana and Alistair will be in conflict with non-believers Morrrigan and Sten. Bodahn sells a special gift for each team member. That special item increases approval by 50.
Yeah I always have a mixture in my group so someone always disapproves and someone always approves 😅
They aren't good to use on a first playthrough though. It can accidentally skip a bunch of dialogues and risk you missing a companions personal quest, it's better to use the cake(+5) and present(+10) and make sure you talk to the companion in between gifts so you don't miss anything.
Since the Gifts/pranks are usable I always give both the 50+ gift and the 50- so that they'll negate each other, Sten's 50+ is especially useful.
Scratch or Bean?
Oh no don't make me choose 😅 but I kinda think Bean, I like how his face looks squishy plus she's an actual war dog, I was too scared to bring Scratch out with me so I left him with my lil owlbear cub 😊
please please please realise that your aoe spells do damage to your ALLIES too. Every time you cast flame cone, frost cone or lightning cone you burn, freeze or fry all your allies that are in the cone aoe too.
When you cast flame cone and leliana, alistair or morrigan starts to burn that's not just a fun pretty little effect.
"Depending on the system and difficulty setting, the amount of damage allies take from friendly fire differs. Allies take no damage on Easy and Normal on console, half damage on Hard, and full damage on Nightmare. On PC, allies take no damage on Easy, half damage on Normal, and full damage on Hard and Nightmare."
Friendly fire depends on your difficulty setting.
Now that you made your bed. If you had gone to the mage tower first, finished there, they would send a group of mages to perform this ritual, as Jowan mentions. You still have choices to make to get a good outcome. The drama...
I don’t want to sound like I’m hating it’s just seeming Liliana not be able to really fight cuz all you gave her was a small blade and not really any skills for her all her skills is for different weapons 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️

I'm dyslexic so I struggle reading, plus I get a lil nervous sometimes because of it. So, if you don't want to listen to my reading I have put a skip time on to show when I carry on playing the game
