- Let's take a look at the new Arrma Typhon Grom! Will it be able to compete with the RC bashers from WL Toys, Rlaarlo and Hyper Go? Is it the best small basher RC?

I must say, out of all the brushless Typhon Grom conversions so far, I am looking forward to yours the most
Me too should be fun :-)
I am a big fan of your videos. I bought the Granite Grom over the holidays, and it is pretty good stock. The motor gets hot. I have not had any part failures. Aliexpress sells a pair of metal outdrives diff cups for $20 that would fix many differential issues that folks have experienced. Back to the Typhon Grom, I love the longer chassis and the easier to remove body shell. The Granite Grom was pain to remove its body shell at first. I am likely going to buy one of these for $139.99 plus tax here in Omaha. I have the WLToys 1/18 & 1/14 scale buggys and the Team Associated Reflex 14T Truggy. I also have a Bonzai Jubatus 1/14 buggy. The Grom is a bit pricey for a brushed motor, but at least it comes with a 1400mah Lipo. I am not sure what I will do with the Typhon Grom. I might put on a chassis protector and use it as a carpet racer. It is a bit small for the dirt track. I might use it as a residential street basher to make my neighbors roll their eyes.
Glad you enjoy the videos. Yeah the fan on the typhon does help quite a bit with the motor heat. It is expensive for what you get but overall it is high quality. Yeah there are a bunch of different companies that have aftermarket parts available for these now.
Sure is! I got both groms. Both rock, and a ton of fun with other groms.
Yeah they're awesome!
I completely agree. For something this smoll more upgraded features out of the box is usually better band for your buck. MJX and Rlarrlo being those.
Yeah definitely. If you're looking for best value for money and don't mind having to deal with quality issues down the road or just consider it a throw away then this probably isn't the best deal.
Tire recommendations for the typhon grom, please. I am not impressed with the stock tires. want something a little taller and with more support maybe foam in them. Thank you.
Unfortunately I don't really have a lot of experience with tires of that size. The granite grom ones are a little bit bigger but they also don't have foam in them. They might be worth trying though since they would be pretty cheap to acquire.
Changing spur gear in my Typhon 3S, 5 screws you can do it even in the field. Changing spur gear in my Rlaarlo AK787, 28 screws!!!! Most of them are different. I have the new spur gear for a few days and I'm still thinking when to put it in the car.
Yeah that's the thing about a lot of these cars that people don't realize. Especially on the little ones if you want to work on them it's often going to be a problem. Like I said in the video if you buy one of the Amazon specials with the understanding that it's either going to be a pain to fix or you're just going to throw it away when it breaks eventually go for it but if you want something that's going to be easy to work on for a long time into the future these are hard to beat.
Very valid point, I have a WLToys 124016 and it is a nightmare to work on.
I also own a Typhon 3s and that's really great to work on. Arrma seems to do well when it comes to maintenance.
@Neelis23 Yeah they're very good at making smart designs. You pay a premium for it but I think it's worth it.
Very informative video best I’ve found on the vehicle thus far you’ve earned a subscriber
Thanks glad you enjoy it!
Got 2 leave 1 stock and mild brushless in the other
Sweet
You have the best Grom series
Glad you're enjoying. Wait till the next video it should be pretty wild :-)
have you opened up a stock differential to verify they're plastic geared inside? The box claims all metal drivetrain?
I just opened one up to verify and yes unfortunately the internal gears are plastic. Horizon is intentionally ambiguous with what they say on the box. It says metal gears in the box but not all metal gears on the box.
is the battery tray longer then the granite grom is my only question??? your granite didnt come with that usb adapter mine had it
Yes. It appears to be about 10 mm longer
@@DoRC perfect my 3s is about 2mm to long for the granite so it should be perfect
Great review! Can’t wait for the brushless upgrade.
You're in luck! I've already released it :-)
How do you know the plastics are better on the Arrma?
It's a subjective thing and it's just my opinion but you know how when you buy something really cheap and the plastic just feels cheap? That's how a lot of the plastic on the Amazon special cars feels. The Grom just like all arrmas plastic feels premium and unless they're using lower quality plastic on this than their other cars it's been proven to be pretty good quality due to the durability of their larger cars. Again oh this is all just my opinion
I been on the edge of getting one... I want to make it faster so I will wait till you upload that videos with the CC setup. I dont know much about rc and what tends to break on a typhon so there is more to learn and upgrade. Cant wait for the next video you upload!!
Stay tuned it'll be soon!
your tear down videos are the best on youtube! just perfect. (
Glad you enjoy lots more coming up!
I like all of your video showing us parts youre using and how to use it
Thanx man for sharing your knowledge about rc
And because of that
Im subscribing to your video
Awesome thank you!
Whered you get all the parts you have used?
@@michaeldev5962 ostensibly they're all available from horizon but I pulled all of these off of my granite grom.
Cool vid on a cool little rig👍
In regards to the battery how the heck does one storage charge that battery without it having a balance lead or if you don’t own a Spektrum charger?
Unfortunately I don't think that you do.
I agree. from a safety perspective, to sell this with a Lipo that you cannot balance charge is an unwise choice, but Traxxas does the same thing on their TRX4-M.
@@RyanTucker-jw8dn the trx4m batteries do have a balance lead and it comes with a usb balance charger the batteries are excellent as well
Been having a blast with mine
Nice!
Monster truggy 👍 I run my Typhon 3s on Mojave 6s tires what a beast 💥👍
Yep that's going to be the goal!
Have you reviewed a LC Racing brushless mini? They are overlooked and not widely known about. They are also sold under the Tacon brand name. They were kind of copies of the Team Losi mini 8 and mini 8 T. But were improved and designed to fix the flaws with the originals. I would really like to see how much this would cost to bring it to that level of quality and performance! I appreciate the work you put in to your videos with the teardowns and all!
I haven't but I have owned one in the past. It's basically the model that all of the WL toys style vehicles copied. Definitely a step above those but we pretty much has the same problems with maintenance and repair. It's higher quality but still kind of hard to work on.
I put the 16bl30 combo in mine. Love this car.
That's a sweet combo.
I don't know what people are talking about, I just ordered the upgraded diffs from Horizon. Like just now, no mention of being backordered or out of stock.
@troysrcchannel5659 Nice! From what I've heard they've been going in and out of stock so I probably just depends on when you look for them.
@troysrcchannel5659 Horizon site had them labeled backorder on the 26th when I got paid otherwise I would have order 2 sets and a new granite grom body along with the typhon grom. It's really cool they are back in stock, kinda makes me want to cancel my transmitter order.
@@troysrcchannel5659consider yourself VERY lucky
The body mount is nice but I’m thinking it’s gunna keep popping off.
So far so good. I haven't had mine pop off once. Check my latest video I definitely tested it :-)
They really should have went with all metal drivetrain. That would have been a huge benefit. But otherwise it's sweet!
For sure. Make sure you check out my latest video :-)
@@DoRC will do!
Will you be using the Mamba micro x2 system that’s very nice I’m running that in my granite grom , wow did I hear you say you’ll run 4s that will be crazy fast lol.
I will and yes as long as it survives to see it I will be putting 4S in it.
I came here for the music.
Nice! I enjoy putting different music in each video.
I have an WLToys of that price (a wobbly piece of crap) and I'm actually thinking about switching to the Typhon Grom - for more precision, metric hardware and better upgrades. [X] subscribed for more updates on this
Well you'll definitely get all of those things. That's its primary advantage.
The way it bounces around I think it could use some weight. I know the new drive train you're putting in is going to add some weight but I think I'd drop two chunks of brass in the chassis, equal weight front/rear. I think that'd help plant it a little more.
Nice little piece of kit though! Awesome video as well! 🙌💪
Check out the upgrade video. The extra weight definitely did help.
The Granite Grom wheels looked pretty sweet to me!😂
Yeah they're okay but I want to go bigger!
Cool, but I decided to pass. These needeing the upgraded diffs for 50 bucks plus a brushless system, over $200 for a small scale RC is kinda worthless to me. Haiboxing makes better vehicles out of the box for under $200 and the best is 1/12. Other than Haiboxing, I'm staying away from small scale just because I'm bored of em personally 😅
Yeah there are good vehicles from several of the Amazon brands but in my opinion none of them match the quality of the groms.
@DoRC Yeah you get what you pay for, mostly. Just wish they built them with the upgraded diffs from factory. 50 bucks extra is insane
The granite grom did have that adapter with the charger, and I got mine soon after release
Weird. I don't remember getting one with mine.
@@DoRC the USB to USB-C right ? I use it to charge the battery off my laptop all the time
@@G35Jeesh Yeah. I pre-ordered mine the day that they came out. It's possible they added it soon after that or maybe I just forgot. That's also entirely possible :-)
Well I finally opened it up today and it's pretty fun! Only thing I hate is it always nose dives off jumps ...
Yeah unfortunately it doesn't really have enough power to attitude correct.
@@DoRC Well, I just got my ebay soldering station in, xt60 connectors, and have a hobbywing esc/motor ready to be thrown in. Gonna practice soldering and hopefully get this HRB 2200 battery hooked up too it. The 2200 HRB fits AMAZING.
@G35Jeesh nice!
My granite grom has sat on a shelf for 2 months cause I keep missing the limited released metal diffs.
Check now I think they may be in stock I forgot where maybe horizon
Someone said about an hour ago that they were able to get them from horizon.
@seanconnolly2179 they are but I spent my RC money on a radiomaster MT12 4&1 instead.
Is that a new radio with fov capable? 350$ sometimes 275 ?
No it's not FPV. This is only $120 new I think also
I have a brushless motor, and it's the 1/18 motor from the hobbywing ezrun series 7800kv. I'm here thinking to have this rc because I have the 3s arrma typhon and have them together 😁
Seems reasonable. I think that motor will be more powerful than the stock one though I'm not sure how much more powerful as it's pretty small.
@DoRC ya, it is small. I'm not sure the mount for this motor would reach the spur gear. Like the size would not probably sit enough to be drivable.
Saw a guy at an RC track I was running at pick one of these up. He said it was kinda slow which didn't surprise me. The fact that it came with a half decent lipo battery and charger was pretty nice, gonna be a pretty big deal for someone just wanting to try the hobby out. His problem though was that he had the cvd pins break on him several times. I was quite surprised to see those fail on day one on a small brushed buggy. Now I'm personally a bit skeptical of the quality and durability of the car, and I love my Arrma Big Rock, but the plastic diffs in that truck are certainly not super reliable.
I'm surprised to hear that on a stock system. I've run the granite on 3S brushless a bunch of times and haven't broken a single pin.
@@DoRC I was quite surprised myself. Could have been a defect I suppose, or maybe just from the track. Didn't actually see what happened when it broke, just that he broke it, so maybe he was landing on throttle a lot or crashing it. Track driving is actually surprisingly hard on these trucks. I don't do it much, so I just always forget how many screws and small parts you lose out there, and how many little things go wrong with your trucks.
@@NerfCraft Yeah there's a reason why race buggies make really good bashers. They have to be built strong to hold up.
No brainer for me, I'll take the build quality and parts support that comes with the Arrma (they do need to do something about those chargers, though). Great series! 👍
what's wrong with the chargers?
Agreed. I know it's tempting to Go with one of the Amazon specials but I think it's a long run this will be a better car.
A lot of people don't like the smart chargers. The battery's tend to fail more often due to the internal electronics and especially this small charger doesn't give you any information about the battery which is pretty important for monitoring its health.
@@DoRC so the internal components of the battery is a problem and folks don’t like the charger because they can’t see the voltage?
@@AnthonyBencomo I don't think everybody has a problem with it but yes. The people that do have a problem with it tend to not like it because it doesn't give you a balance cable to let you monitor and balance the cells and personally I prefer to be able to see what's going on with the battery. I think it's very important.
The self discharge on the G2 battery’s 😂 these companies just push people away from using they’re products with all the proprietary BS.
Yeah I think it's unnecessary and to be honest with you I feel like it's important for people to monitor their own batteries though maybe that's just me being old school
Cool for the cash, just rather pay more for all the reflex 14 line up. Well not the 14r with an anemic brushed setup.
Yeah the reflex is pretty cool. It is a little harder to work on though and upgrades aren't as readily available.
@@DoRC have you tried the TA reflex 14 lineup? Was thinking about getting one of those or this typhon grom
if so and if u can remember, how did the handling feel comparatively speaking?
@lyricofwise6894 Yes. I've had the buggy and I currently have the monster truck. They are good though not quite as easy to work on as the Grom.
@@lyricofwise6894 I have the reflex 14b and the reflex 14mt. The 14b has the dna from bigger 8th scale buggies shrunk down. It handles well on most surfaces. It does well as a little bruiser but really shines on the track. While it may be a little more difficult to work on, the ability to tune the suspension out of the box is nice to have. The 14MT is less of a precision tool like the buggy and more of a sledge hammer. I’ve smashed into pretty much everything and it just continues to go. I plan on getting the 14r but only to round out the collection since they’ve neutered it with a non brushless setup. You’re paying for a slice of Ken Block’s legacy and then made it the opposite of his values. It should come with more power than it can handle in respect to the man’s life.
@@lyricofwise6894 I compared the two and ended up getting the TA 14T a few days ago...very happy with it so far.
Great Info..Subsribed
Glad you enjoyed thanks for the sub!
As expected the ears inside the gears round off. 50$ on upgraded diffs.. just get a gorgon.
At least in my experience with stock power they hold up okay but others have said they've broken theirs on stock power as well.
I would buy a Gorgon, if they sold it with a Lipo instead of ancient NIMH battery technology.
Man…you so should have brought the big tires too, just to see what a “truggy” grom could do.
Stay tuned:)
@@DoRC Like get the popcorn ready stay tuned, or like a bonus episode of GOT season 8?
@@jonhowland4985 I'm hoping for get the popcorn but even I won't know until tomorrow because I haven't actually finished making the video. It will be out tomorrow though!
@@DoRC awesome…for what it’s worth you’ve got yourself a sub. Looking forward to seeing future content.
@@jonhowland4985 awesome thanks for the sub!
Just an oddity: I bought 3 Granite GROMs as gifts and they all had that USB-A to C adapter with the charger.
These breakdowns are so detailed, really appreciate them.
Interesting. It is possible that my original Grom also came with the adapter but I don't remember seeing it and mine was one of the very first batches so it's possible they added it to them as well afterward.
i love mine i got it for only 130 and darn these little things can take a beating💪🏻
Yeah they're pretty good out of the box.
That looks great. Im giving you a heads up. If you go 4s with castle it exposes more weak links in the driveline. My buddy and i put inmicro x2s with the castle 1007 6350kv motors. It makes these vehicles insane but because of the lack of a center diff, our trucks constantly shear off the rear inner axle cross pins. We've tried every brand you can think of for axles but nothing holds up to the power. Try not to land on power or do anything that can cause the drivetrain to come to a sudden stop. The metal diffs hold up great on 2 and 3s castle power but the next weak link are the axle pins. They are either too small at 1.5mm or the vehicle needs a center diff at some point. Have fun with it! Itll be a rocket ship!
Yeah I don't plan on doing 4S for normal usage. It'll primarily just be to have fun in the video. I'm putting a 1010 motor in this so should be even better :-)
@DoRC holy cow. That 1010 is gonna be insane. Im assuming the 4400kv right? If so, with a 16t pinion, you theoretical to speed with be around 53mph lol 😆
@colerippeon3903 yep. I have a 16 tooth and an 18 tooth pinion to put on it. I was planning on going straight to the 18 Do you think they 16 would be more appropriate?
@DoRC i would go all out with the 18 tooth. Regardless, this system is way too much power either way for these trucks, so see what kind of craziness you can get out of it. It will make for a great video. The only other thing i would recommend is increasing the brake percentage in the esc. I think the micro x2 is set at 25% stock calibration
@colerippeon3903 I will definitely do that. Yeah I'm expecting Carnage by the end of the videos :-)
I see a TLR version coming for this one. They’re selling in loads seems
Either that or an EXB.
That thumbnail is pretty funny
Glad it made you smile!
As a crazy insane to the membrane mental owner of a (huge) 1/18 vintage collection (and none not a single 1/10 today, sold all, don't ask, don't blame), I'm gonna vote "pass". It's not $140usd around here, but almost $180usd. Also 2 more reasons "why": 1. diff issue at large 2. 380 sealed can that will burn to a crisp during summertime. Also, I don't like the body/wheels artstyle. Head and shoulders better than "omg this is trash Rlaarlo", but thats a bar so low you can easily step over it.
That would definitely be a tough sell at $180.
Rlaarlo is doing slightly better on small scale bashers than the traxxas and arrma
@lyricofwise6894 sort of. Their stuff is pretty good but it's based on the same platform as the WL toys cars and they all share the same difficulty in repair etc.
@@lyricofwise6894 I would rather go with 1/16 e-revo. I don't like Traxxas, the only Traxxas I ever had was Stampede. but I would still get e-revo before Rlaarlo
@@n00b247 overpriced for what is has to offer, their teton was worse durability than a $50 random rc
The bigger tires looked good it almost needs it I kept getting stuck on twigs everywhere. My fan must not be that good I still had high temps on the motor running in the grass. The car is ok I dont see it as an adult car though the Wl Toys is way faster and to me more fun it is a tough decision the build quality is better but less fun the little 380 makes it hard to upgrade not impossible just limits the choices.
It definitely does limit choices though for a car this size I think something like the castle system I'm going to be putting in is going to be more than enough. It's going to be pretty wild :-)
Try to install the typhoon a arms on the granite
They're the same part.
Seriously how are you getting the upgraded diffs?
So disappointed in Arrma for not having them stocked anywhere EVER😤
I ordered a set when the granite grom originally came out. I then managed to snag a set off of eBay which is what I ended up putting in the granite grom for its upgrade video and then eventually they shipped me the original set that I ordered.
I recently found mine on eBay not marked up!! got lucky I guess!
Both groms are 99$ at my hobby shop might get one
Wow that's a very good price.
If he will have center diff it will be easy to control. I waiting after the terminator but Rlaarlo dosn't ship like he said :(
From what I've heard they have started shipping the terminators.
Arrma, still waiting for the senton grom...
Don't think it's going to happen. They've got some URLs that don't go anywhere and the sentin Grom is not one of them. The Mojave Grom is though.
@@DoRCI just want a mini short course truck to come out
it's cute😂
Check out my latest video. Very cute!
Yo! let’s get to work on that next video. Castles my shit!!
It's out :-)
4s? That’s way overpowered for a car that small. Only a knuckle dragger would make that 4s.
Thanks for your feedback and thanks for watching :-)
You are just paying for the name, rather get a Hyper Go. They are pretty solid cheaper and faster.
You are somewhat paying for the name but you also pay for a better design higher build quality ease of maintenance and repair and a more robust upgrade path.
Seems slow shame isn’t 2s brushless
It definitely isn't fast. It's pretty fun for just small area bombing around though.
Hopefully arrma makes all there rcs clip less bodys for now on.
That would be nice. This clipless body is definitely the best I've seen.
No thank you. I have the self removing body on my Xmaxx and hate it. I spend a much time chasing it to put the body back on as I do bashing. I like my body clipped Arrma bodies that just stay on. It takes 30 seconds extra to put on once a opposed to 5 seconds dozens of times. Add in the 100 yard walk back and forth and I could install dozens of body clips faster. Use clipless on crawlers or really scale stuff but keep the clips for bashing. KISS keep it simple, stupid.
I don't even want one, but I'm getting one. You know, it's new.........
Just one?
Hello
Hi!
What? Its not 1/14th its 1/18th
No for a buggy it's pretty much 1/14 scale. Buggies are differently scaled than monster trucks because full size buggies are a lot smaller than a full size monster truck. That's why you'll see 1/8 scale buggies on the same platform as 1/10 scale monster trucks.
In my opinion, you have basically no other choice than going for a monster truck as a smaller scale rc car.
First of all, you will need every little bit of ground clearance and off road capabilities on these small cars that you can get. Otherwise you are pretty much limited to parking lots. Even in this video you can see the car struggling due to a few random stones or dirt blocks.
Second of all, with these exposed shock towers, you throw away the biggest advantage these small rc cars have: durability. The low weight combined with probably the best "on-roof-landing" durability available is diminished by using a buggy instead of a monster truck.
TLDR: If you want one of these, better get a granite grom.😊
Maybe though I think it just depends on what your goals are. This thing is going to handle better than the granite grom due to its longer wheelbase and lower center of gravity. As far as ground clearance you're just a tire swap away from whatever ground clearance you want. The biggest difference between this and the granite that I found is that the granite tends to land on its wheels more frequently when it does roll over because of the flat roof profile on the typhon. Ultimately just like buggies versus monster trucks of any scale they both have their advantages and disadvantages.
@@DoRC Interesting perspective!
Ya small scale rcs struggle offroad unless you like the scale feel, since even small rocks or potholes would be so huge in real life comparatively speaking, (like mini crawler), hence I use em indoors or driveway
@lyricofwise6894 I actually think they're fun on the rough stuff because it's harder to keep them going then larger cars. Makes for a good challenge.
Definetely pass.
Do you not like the small cars or just not this one?
Pass
Don't like this car or just don't like small cars?
@@DoRC i think the small cars are kinda gimmicky. But it looks legit for the price
@@kiethpederson7558 yeah they can be. But they're also really awesome when you want to bash some place that you can't normally with larger vehicles
Too much hype on these mini brushed cars...
Maybe. They definitely have their place though and at least in my experience they are the highest quality small cars you can get.
They are just fun and smaller scale racing is getting easier to get into on this scale and cost
I mean for the same price or even less I can go for example with an Mjx hyper go:still great quality, still small scale but brushless with amazing torque and speed...so why choose a brushed car in 2024?
