You would think somewhere on Atlantis there would be a ZPM manufacturing facility.
Yeah, in Atlantis, they had to be made somehow.
They never explored the whole city and seeing that it could be dangerous to make them it is most likely in the outskirt, the flooded areas, or possibly on another planet

I bet the way to recharge it is so simple, no one else had thought of it. i bet you just shake them vigorously for 10 minutes then re-install them. Of course the replicators will never tell us this... :)

ZPM's don't discharge, they reach maximum entropy which is irreversible. Maximum entropy is when all workable energy in a system is completely gone, either used or dissipated and you have nothing but complete evenness in the energy state. The universe we live in is in fact racing toward this state and when it reaches it, it is known as the "Heat death of the universe". There is a one way process and it would violate the laws of physics to attempt otherwise. The reason why they say ZPM's are a "universe-in-a-bottle" is because as a self contained region of space-time, they are literally not part of our universe, they are pinches of our universe, twisted off to create a small tiny universe, which as universes go, it produces energy which is then siphoned off back into OUR universe to power objects, as this happens, it starts a build up of entropy until the differential is gone and you have equilibrium and thus maximum entropy. When it reaches this state one of two things happens, A) you have a region of space-time that is completely flat and even or B) the space-time region ceases to exist, as I said maximum entropy means the energy level is even with respect to our universe and thus the self contained region ceases to be self contained and just sort of blobs back into our space-time meaning the region inside the ZPM would seem to disappear and cease to exist.
To make a ZPM usable again, this would require another pinching off of space-time and the creation of a pocket universe again. You would essentially load the ZPM with another pocket universe, which even among the ancients seem to be an effort, not ridiculously hard but still an effort.
I can't remember if this was ever addressed in the show or not. But it bothered me that they never found a shop/foundry to make ZPM's. I mean could have always shown it as a destroyed laboratory they couldn't use. But it seemed like the excuse given in the show always was "we can't replicate the ZPM's technology." They were literally in the ancient city that used it as a power source there should be some file somewhere for maintenance that would say how to make one using the tech in the city or a lab where they were built. The ZPM's were powerful but during a full scale war where shields, weapons, and other power hog devices would be constantly in use they were going to have to replace them eventually.
It takes time to translate the ancient database since not everyone can read or understand the ancient language. Also remember parts of the city were flooded and those areas contained most of the labs. By the time they were able to access those areas they were heavily involved in the war against both the wraiths and the replicators so resources had to be realocated.
You have the up/down references in your piston example backwards. Compression builds on top of the piston on the up stroke, not under it on the down stroke - even if the engine is upside down.

How f**ing stupid some engines create circular compressions others create compression from the sides of blocks. It’s about engine format and not your shit fords or chevys.
What nobody noticed was there was a switch on the bottom of the ZPM that started the recharging mode.

The way you use engines is backwards btw when the piston goes up it compresses

Either his description was inverted or his illustration was inverted. Either way, A for effort.
Actually that is not how a piston works at all. The compression of fuel and air raises the temperature of the mixture allowing a more efficient combustion.
The reason why new ZPM's need to be manufactured, is because they all need to be built specifically around a new subspace bubble and set to specifically tap into it. The ZPM is a universe in a bottle in a sense though, because the effects of zero point energy are devastating to a universe. It creates exotic particles, changes the zero energy state of space, etc. If the zero point energy state of our universe were to change, all matter could actually poof out of existence. The laws of physics and the existence of particles, relies on this resting energy state of the universe. So the ZPM does pull energy from outside of our universe. The ZPM is destroying the space it derives energy from, but since we don't live in that universe, it has no effects on us. In fact, I'm pretty sure they don't even really create a new mini universe, but actually just pull energy from random universes. I remember they said in one episode that the chances of a universe being occupied that the ZPM is pulling energy from, are slim. In fact, that's exactly what Rodney tried to do when he tried to create his own energy generation device using an abandoned ancient project. It was basically ZPM power on the go, allowing them to tap into any number of random universes at will, not just confined to the specific parameters and limitations a regular ZPM would have. And that's the episode where the energy generator was pulling energy from a mirror universe where Rodney meets his double.

The ability to create a zpm is inside the ancient database. So at some point after Atlantis's return to Earth Stargate command and it's researchers would have finally been able to go through all of the data that also included the instructions on how to make the drone weapons. I am also going to point out that zpm may have been set up as a 1 time use and they can not be recharged.
Yeah but story wise that’s not really exciting.
It would be incredibly wasteful to have ZPMs be one time use considering how much of the ancient technology requires them to work

Imagine the Stargate team just opening a cupboard in the control room of Atlantis one day and there sits 40+ ZPMs ready for use.
I always imagined a ZPM as a self contained singularity that couldn't easily collapse until the Crystal broke. The singularity pulled energy that was free moving into contact with the crystal case and the case stored it and released it as needed. I imagine that due to entropy, the singularity breaks the case down until it finally can collapse, making the case go dark. Or explosive in some instances. But this happens over thousands of years, thus it is a reliable energy source. Once the singularity can pull in enough energy or matter, the ZPM dies as the singularity fades away.
So like the black holes we can make with our huge CERN Collider, but contained and kept from collapsing with a sponge. That sponge can give off energy it soaks up.
Also, pretty sure CERN can make black holes... About to fact check myself on that... They'd be super tiny and collapse quickly, but... Yeah...

Could be that it is a very small (microscopic) singularity. The Hirogen ones could be felt in space, but I imagine the crystal case keeps it from pulling at nearby space and subspace material, only free energy. So a dampened field that only gathers energy. Also, haven't we seen ZPM units explode violently if damaged? Not too sure about this, but I think one met a Zat. And didn't like it. They are in DHD pedestals, and those can go boom if damaged.

I think ZPMS are a use once type of power source, and once activated they would have to be in constant use. Think of ZPMS as hyperspace windows in a bottle. Once activated a region/frequencey of subspace is accessed. It then only becomes a matter of power draw/time before the window can no longer be substained. I think where the confusion lies with how ZPMS work is when ancient tech gets compared to forerunner tech.

I'm a physicist and I have to start by saying I disagree with the present theories on zero point space. It is completely impossible to extract energy from the fluctuating floor of a quantum system. The floor of a quantum system obviously exists at a state smaller than Plancks constant, therefore existing as a particle and wave at the same time. The issue falls in when physicists fail to understand the system from a quantum point of view and look at it from their own point of view. Those fluctuation aren't fluctuation, they're the basis of zero existing in a quantum state that without which would violate the fundamental laws of quantum mechanics. What to us seems like a wave dipping below and above zero, is only zero on a quantum state. The people who are actually working on this are just spinning their wheels on a lack of understanding quantum structure.
The ZPM as described in Stargate work based on what we currently think of as Zero Point Energy, but don't exist in our space-time. They mentioned in the show that doing this in our universe would be extreme dangerous (in theory if this was possible and used in our universe, the energy you pulled out of the system, which in this case is the universe, would pull that energy from other places to maintain balance, thus pulling from everywhere around it, weakening the structure of reality because as mentioned before, the wave you're pulling energy from, is 0, the baseline of the universe itself.) They created small pocket universes and the ZPM creates a bridge to this isolated pocket universe in order to draw energy from. The only way to recharge that would be to reverse universal entropy in a pocket universe, which if that was even possible, would require at least the same energy that was used, minus the process of doing it, and the energy to maintain the gateway. It would be far easier (relatively speaking) to create new pocket universes to draw energy from.

Just finished reading this and man I wish I read this before I made my first comment. This is what I was talking about. Why recharge when it makes more sense to reset, or use a new pocket dimension as you put it. Thanks for this great to know that a layman can be on a similar track as someone who actually studied physics.
My understanding (although it was many long years ago, and may be "fanon" rather than canon) was that ZPMs could be reset by changing the frequency or something like that. There was a machine to do that, but it wasnt required by the time Atlantis left, as everybody had ultra-low grade psionic capabilities. Something like resetting a ZPMs frequency might have been something they did by touching the thing.
Frankly, I never understood why the Atlantis team never found the secret for ZPM tech. Surely the Ancients had it recorded somewhere in the database, and you'd think finding that would be priority one for the expedition. In the whole series, you see nothing regarding a search for this knowledge or the devotion of manpower to finding it. They just kept looking for ZPMs that still had power.
I think Rodney's "universe in a bottle" analogy is correct. The "inside" of a ZPM is artificially created and very finite in scope compared to the physical universe. Once you extract all of the potential energy in the ZPM, it's dead and "recharging" would require creating a new "universe" within the ZPM.
Well we do know that the information on ZPM's were in the Atlantis database. Weir was lamenting how they could not take the whole database with them when they were going to evacuate Atlantis. She was talking about how do you choose between information on ZPM or Ascension. Why they didn't just look it up... it's a more fun story to go through the gate and get kidnaped by Wraith.
The ancients don't call them zpm. We know this as when Dr. Weir when back in time the guy that helped her, don't remember his name, asked her "what do you call them?". So finding something you don't know the name of in a database that large is a major undertaking

Oh well. At least Atlantis had more consistency than SGU...that show had so many plot holes it made NO sense whatsoever. Amateur sci-fi fans could have written a less buggy plot/story.
Probably to keep desperation in the show. It was also my first question, along with drones, mini drones, personal shields, puddle jumpers, etc...With Atlantis never having full power it would keep Atlantis in a perpetual state of crisis, and fans glued to find out what’s next.

Actually a motor vehicle's piston when traveling downwards, it's not compressing anything. When it's on the compression stroke it is traveling "upwards" and both of the valves closed thus creating compression and when the Piston gets to the top (max compression) a little bit of fuel is sprayed by the injector and then a spark is ignited causing an explosion or combustion, shooting the Piston back down.
You lost me when you said Piston going down to create pressure...
Entropy is when no more work can be extracted from (insert you’re device here) as everything is the same energy level , (the energy can’t change to another form ) (once all the energy in the ZPM reaches the same temperature no more energy can be extracted)
How many ZPM could be charged with the Arcturus project? This would probably be called a ZPM mass production. Just stupid if there really should be other universes that are lost. o_o Or: How do you send the energy taken from a ZPM back to the ZPM immediately or as soon as possible?
Its not a battery...its a device that draws energy from the vacuum space of the universe zero-point energy thus ZPM ...the ZPM will eventually be depleted ( stops being able to draw off ZPE ) it may be that the atomic structure of the crystal becomes depleted or saturated ( depending how it draws the energy ) and thus can no longer extract ZPE

The problem with ZPM is like having a machine gun in medieval times. If you have 1000 rounds you can make a real difference in a fight, even a war, but not in the long run.
If you suddenly know how to make bullets you practically become so overpowered that nobody...literally nobody can resist you.
As frustrating as it is but if the humans would have found out how to make ZPMs the series would have ended....the wraith would have been annihilated in weeks with a real strategic human mind and after that we would have basically have a terrain empire. The writers were in fact right to limit the zpms drastically although be it just for the sake of storytelling and not for any logic reason
The only problem with the theory is: You need energy to create this "dent" in space-time. i.e. to produce a ZPM you need as much energy as you can get out of it later. Similar to an accumulator where you only get as much energy as you have previously charged. This is why McKay's statement makes more sense than Zelenka's. The ZPM contains its own space-time, which is independent of the rest of the universe. So you get energy from another place. The Arcturus project tried to extract energy from our own space-time and it triggered a catastrophe because it destabilized the space-time of our universe.
And Mckay being Mckay destory a solar system. He always has to be right. The more pride you have the harder the fall.
The ZPMs almost certainly required more energy to manufacture than could be extracted from them, otherwise the Ancients would make millions of them and not need Project Arcturus, which produced net energy directly. One way or another, energy has to come from somewhere.

Would it be a battery alone, there would be no thing like "energy lose", because using a zpm would be recarging the zpm. You could claim, that railguns on Atlantis use the transfer, but in this case, it uses the shield generator. Okey, i lie, a little bit. Even as generator, it recharges. but, because, in use, you only can transfer the energy. A ZPM should use 8/11 correct spins, mase technology turns it down to 1 to 10 to twelve, and politics makes out of it a a mathematical matrix.

Because of how they work, 'recharging' a ZPM would essentially be remaking it. They are essentially disposable.
The fact that they make tiny sealed universes as disposable batteries really kind of puts the god in god like being.

A fanfic story had the ZPM's being charged(and theoretically recharged) by passing through a singularity(black hole). Of course one needed to have the technology to retrieve the ZPM from the adjourning m-brane universe the singularity emptied into.
A pretty good fan fiction series had them being charged by large collection energy taps in a star that beamed their power to charge it and had linked gate networks that transferred energy from other stars.
@@rodney73991 no i dont think the stargate universe ship was powered by ZPM's at all. it was powered by scooping up energy from the sun. also all stargates were not powered by a ZPM, they drew energy from the planet around it. Universes ship couldnt even jump to hyperspace it only had an FTL drive and was like 1 million years old. you dont charge up ZPMs, once there depleted there gone.

A stream is a very good example of potential difference. A common way of generating energy today is using the flow of water to turn a generator from a stream/river. The only reason why this works is that water will always flow from high to low or from the mountains to the ocean. Water in the mountains has a much higher gravitational potential energy than water in the ocean. Higher potential energy will always move towards a lower potential, which results in the water flowing towards the ocean and finally, is where we can extract energy. Once the water reaches the ocean, it no longer has any energy difference compared to the rest of the water in the sea and has no where to flow down towards. The ocean still has a lot of potential energy, but it is the same everywhere.
Its a very similar situation when thinking about extracting zero-point energy. We cannot extract energy from the quantum vacuum, as all the energy in the vacuum is the same everywhere. It might be possible to create a difference to extract energy from. This would be similar to digging a hole inland that is lower than sea level, if we then connected the hole to the ocean, the water would then naturally flow towards it which we could generate energy from (until the hole is full).
But what if the quantum vacuum is not constant? Prof Derek Leinweber's work has shown that it actually fluctuates quite rapidly as seen here: ua-cam.com/video/J3xLuZNKhlY/v-deo.html
This means that there is some energy difference within empty space.. so in theory there is energy to be extracted (ZPM !!)

Great video. It got me thinking about another way to describe it is: A conduit of Zero Point Energy from a Defined Subspace region. This is why its finite. Now how the Crystal can be re-configured to draw from another subspace region is something to think about. Maybe the crystals are not reusable or burn out.. Or maybe its just the space they draw from that is only finite.
I think in the case of the ZPM, the subspace is artificially created, hence, it can be recharged, or more precisely, rebuilt.
An easier way to look at this is a ZPM is a battery, and a dam. It was explained in the SGA series.
Technically it is not a battery but rather a power source. and in our universe it can't work. On the quantum level of space/time, dual particles of mater and its counter part antimater are formed and then anihilate themselves back into the space/time think of horses on a merry-go-roud we only see them on the up stroke, (when they ave been created), and they disappear on the down stroke (when they self annihilated and create energy) It is this energy which could be what is driving inflation of space/time faster and faster. the more space there s the more particles appear and annihilate each other. These particles in out space/time quantum level actually exist. but in a ZPM, a pocket fininite sized universe, captured right after its big bang and instead of expanding by the creation and annihilation of paired matter and antimatter particles creating energy to inflate this space, the energy is syphommed off to power whatever a ZPM is attached to. When not powering something it uses the generated energy to prevent that pocket universe from expanding in stasis inside the ZPM. eventually the ZPM stop generating new particle pair because there is finite space/time inside it and it powers down, becoming inert in our universe.

This is what I dont get..the Asgard have a matter converter that can virtually make anything they want....why didnt the Tau'ri ask the asgard to study and reverse engineer a ZPM they had and for the Asgard to use their matter converter to make more ZPMs for the Tau'ri.
"Deep Breath", or simple: because, it would be the last thing, you have made with the matter converter, everything else, would disapper, because the absoulte output of the zpm changes all the time So, it would be disapper in time (hits the critical mass) or it would be disapper by using that zpm. Same Concept as the TV End of SG1.
Oh, they could make a drained ZPM shell easily enough, But generating the pocket universe that it uses for it's power source? Not so much.
I don’t think that even the ancients were able to violate the first law of thermodynamics. Perhaps the ZPMs were a way that they found to tap in to energy on a tremendous scale. Within the modules themselves they created an area of extreme order (for want of a better analogy) which could siphon energy through its tendency to increase in entropy.
Anyone else notice how much the new Space Force logo looks a lot like the Stargate patch on the left shoulder seen in this video. Now the stars aren't in the same spots. Maybe they're showing the same thing from a different vantage point.

It's a shame they didn't know ZPM's existed before Daniel ascended, or he definitely would have brought that specific knowledge back with him.

It would be more accurate to say that the area of spacetime stored in the ZPM is oscillating at a frequency higher than regular spacetime. The other way around would not be able to do work, just like a dead battery.

Suppose we launch a craft in space with solar panel in huge quantity and a nuclear reactor to charge zpm its like space zpm factory give you openion at that.
Everyone always goes on about recharging a ZPM, but maybe they were never ment to be recharged. I theorize that they are supposed to be "reset" instead. Think about it how do you recharge a pocket of subspace time? You can't it's like recharging a universe, but I believe you can reset it to a different pocket and draw power from there once the old one reaches maximum entropy. Just a theory that makes sense to me.

well they never view the entire data base i think its even stated that it would take a very long time to go through all their info. it being an entire two galaxys of ancients and theres the time they spent in the ida galaxy so it most likely is in there somwhere just like the technical specs for ships and much more
Well it was, Weir referenced it when they were needing to plan on leaving Atlantis and they could not take all of the database with them. She was complaining about how do you choose what part to take, how to make ZPM or information on Ascending. But apparently even with the manual in the database we can't do it. lol.

There has to be ZPM factories somewhere in either the Milky Way or Pegasus galaxies on a world, moon, or space station that is off the network so only the Ancients know where they are just stocked to the rafters.

Hey bro, I have seen almost all Stargate series, but I still haven’t seen Stargate Universe.
One thing I did not get, is that The Ancients did not keep No record for how to build/create ZPMs.
And The Stargate Team did not find no evidence or build-plans of The ZPM in Atlantis City Main-computer or anywhere. I was not happy about this, for every Episodes and Seasons of Stargate I was more hoping that The Stargate Team “should” look for ZPM in every mission when they took Off-World. They fund one, but it was depleted and I was so Excited when Dr. Rodney M. fund one ZPM.
But still I would have like to see if they could have fund some sort of build-plans how to create/build a ZPM.
I think that Stargate should continue especially Stargate Atlantis, for The Stargate Atlantis Team much more to explore in Pegasus and maybe explore another Galaxy nearby.

They dont discharge, the energy in use are only not high enough, to generate the reaction, to give energy out. you discarge your smartphone, you can use a button to end the process. But, until you discarge your phone like bios wants it, you cant end the process, only the time, and, thorugh cable, a little bit of the form of energy as electrity..

Sorry have to argue about a show detail you stated. You said that a single ZPM could keep the Atlantis shield up against the weight of the ocean for the 10,000 years...there were three ZPMs keeping the shield up not one.

For me I think the ZPM contains a micro reality. As that reality ages it releases energy. Time is different in that reality, the more energy used from the ZPM the quicker the reality go's. Time execrates. Energy can't be made or destroyed, only moved from one to another. I think that's what empathy is. Thing grow old & energy is expended from one thing to another.

Seeing as how the show never answered the question of how these macguffins are created, I have to wonder if that question was actually answered in Stargate Universe. Harvesting energy from a star then using that energy to make a more easier to use battery. Seeing as how the Destiny was launched while city-ships were in the design phase. They had already developed the technology to fuel the destiny.
So I just came to realize that Nikolai tesla was actually looking into zero point energy at the end of his life. Leads me to believe that startgate truly made this show as a plausible deniability like they said in episode 200

The Zpm is a battery based of crystal and mirror technology. When the ancients travel to space using sub light engine based space ships they include the Zpm on the exterior of the ship so they can fish and harness sub light which is a mirrage . It's like a space solar panel but capture star light as well
Um, our "sun" is a star therefore the light we see, plants use, etc. IS star light. Sub light refers to the speed a ship travels at thru "normal" space. Maybe you were thinking of subspace (which is what "hyperdrive" engines use to travel thru)?

Um, actually, the Zero Point Module operated as a single unit is not capable of powering the shield for 10,000 years. Atlantis used 3, working in concert, which for some reason, yielded slightly more power than 3 ZPMs would yield individually. The second Dr. Weir, having traveled back in time, remained behind to rotate the ZPMs every so often for plot reasons. By the time the expedition arrived, the first 2 had depleted entirely, and the 3rd had nearly reached maximum entropy.

Not necessarily. Energy has to come from somewhere, so there is probably a manufacturing facility exploiting solar energy, or the penrose process somewhere. Even gasoline is just liquified solar energy.
If zero-point energy is everywhere, why would the ancients need a battery? Re-imaging how the technology works it would seem to make more sense if instead of a battery the ZPM was a conduit for Zero-point energy. If the ZPM contained a super-conductive liner that allowed the energy to travel from the tap on one end to the connections on the other then it would make since that the ZPM was being depleted from the super-conductor being ablated by the enormous force of the power flowing through it. Once the conductors were used up the tap stops functioning and the ZPM is depleted. Recharging would be useless because the power really isn’t gone it just needs a new sleeve inserted into the container to allow the flow to be re-established. The Science teams wouldn’t understand why it won’t recharge because the liner is completely gone. If you don’t know it’s missing how can it be replaced. Also explains why there’s no spares setting around. Once you have the casing completed you just have to reinsert another sleeve into the inner chamber. Probably in the armory on Atlantis that the Pegasus teams never found. If they had they would have been using weapons similar to what the replicators have.
Stupid question, you use the on/off thing on electronic only for turning it on, right? The answer would be no, but because, we use electronic everywhere, our ressources are limited. You have such playground like atlantis - and now, ony tiny little thing goes defect, you have to put a lot of energy in it, to repair or renew it.
Next thing is, to generate the using power, on the principes of electrity, you have to let zero-point energy regenerate their energy level. The Basics of this physic is, that, until you have usefull energy/electricty, that the way, the using energy has regnerate, is muuuuuuuuuuuuch longer. Its like the "free energy" thing claimes, with one problem. Because you use this kind of zero point energy, their is only on the using energy not a thing like a resistor. Zero Point Energy claims, to have even in the generating not such thing, because the use is the resistor.

Good luck, fishing in a black hole. The lenght of that fishing rod, as way of the recharging resistor, is on a timeline enough, to generate enough energy for atlantis on earth. because, its way easier, to create free energy out of such thing, like an asgard core, than to make a "new" sleeve.

Yes, and you want to say that with such an ancient energy source I will be able to activate my ship,,,, I don't really believe this, I tried this, and the on-board computer shows that I need such energy sources, how many atoms does the material universe have , so I continue to use the condensed crystal light reactor, because it is infinitely more efficient and biometronic than the ancient technology,,,and it only involves just the energy of a single crystalline photon of light ,,,,
ACTUALLY THE SOLUTION IS VERY SIMPLE. First the two vartiable potentials must be isolated and each adjusted to create the desired direrence in potential by boosting each positive and negative connection. The solid state inversion capacitance must be checked to vetify that it is functioning properly or the charging will dead short and you will be back to square one.
Tesla explained it as splitting the positive. The ZPM is just dong it on steroids .
