  • The modern world associates love with finding one very special person in whom to pour all one's affection. But what if a deeper understanding of love amounted to something else: a far more generous universal sort of love?

      Genuine Love is unconditional unfortunately many people don't understand love and when they put their "love" into practice it does more harm than good. People claim to love others for many reasons whether it be financial or for control over the other person. Some parents are perfect examples as they only "love" their kids if they do certain things they like. This could alter the view of others as the "love" they experience whether in childhood or romantically wasn't genuine. Don't let others cloud your judgment. Love others unconditionally without expecting anything and you will find genuine love!

    Loving someone as a person and loving someone as a lover are two different things. The Greeks use two different words to describe this, "αγάπη" when it comes to loving others as people and "έρωτας " when it comes to loving someone as a lover. I think that this video appeals to the term "αγάπη" and I truly believe that we can love everyone as a human, despite our differences. But when it comes to loving someone as a lover, I do believe that it is impossible to feel like that for everyone.

    1. I have a guitar student who comes for a lesson every Thursday evening and he always comes drunk. It is really heart breaking. He is an elder gentleman and he is always very kind and if it wasn't for the smell of alcohol, you wouldn't notice anything. To be honest I was hoping that he quits the lessons at some point, but he doesn't. If you never had trouble with alcohol, you don't understand these people. You even have a certain arrogance, thinking that it is just their "weakness" and
    lack of will power". But because of this student, I had to think a lot more on the issue. I have read some stuff, heard some podcasts and watched documentaries etc. Especially the documentary " Drinking to Oblivion" by Louis Theroux touched me deeply. You will never look at an alcoholic person the same way after watching it.
    There was a woman in that documentary who had some very heavy issues with her mother in her childhood. Then the mother left. It seemed to me that poor girl was lost since then. She explained the kind of anxiety she felt everyday when she woke up, which led her to start drinking as the first think in the morning.That was the only thing that calmed her down and gave her consolation. She started drinking when she was 13. I thought what she described was exactly the same anxiety that I feel everyday when I wake up, that leads me to start reading a book or making music as the first thing in the morning .. So indeed I could perfectly BE that woman if I hadn't found the "consolation" elsewhere as a child for the first time, by pure coincidence!!!
    So if we are more less mentally sane, so much of it is just luck... If we had enough time, curiosity and clarity of mind to look way back into everyone's personal history, we would find it much harder to judge them or dislike them. We would certainly end up loving them. Because we would know that they most probably didn't receive enough affection, had gone through a lot of humiliation and didn't have a single person around to show them where to find consolation.
    2. One of my heroes Bryan Stevenson has an excellent speech on youtube called " Boldly Going". He is an Afro- American lawyer who saved 125 people from death penalty! The speech is about how to change the world!! And there he gives us the example of an awful guy, a really disgusting, racist, arrogant, appalling person, who happens to be a prison guard. He humiliates Mr. Stevenson every time he goes there to see his client. You will see what happens then. It is hard to believe but even that guy has a lovable side...
    3. I highly recommend everyone the movie " Angst Essen Seele Auf" ( Ali: Fear Eats The Soul ). It is Fassbinder's masterpiece! One very sad but very beautiful love story, that once again proves that you could indeed love anybody if you are compassionate and brave enough.
    Thanks a lot for this wonderful lesson and the excellent animation. After watching for a second, I already knew it was made by Peter:-) Congratulations once again!

      Expand this love. This is human love and is not to be disregarded. But there's a deeper love, a love we all have and the worst thing that can happen is losing it. And the best thing is fully experiencing it. It's the love for life and everything in it. You are life. The deepest love is the one you have for yourself.

      +Rachel Wood Well many people are abusive because of events in their childhood. If you trace back to that you can still find a way to empathize with that person and still love them BUT just because you love someone does NOT mean you MUST be in a relationship with that person. You have to leave an abusive relationship, not only ll just leave but get that sob in jail. But once again you don't have to be in a relationship to Love, Love the person like a troubled sister or brother in need of help (because they do need help), not as a spouse. Or of course, you can just say fuck them and completely move on, the choice is entirely yours.

    • @DewDewHoney
      @DewDewHoney 7 років тому +80

      love is not about supporting someone but helping them/forgiving them. yes, someone has abused you, yes you may disgust/ hate that person for the rest of your life.but rather than holding onto that weight, maybe do smthng that will eradicate any further chance of that person's abuse. like realizing maybe he got abused too in childhood and so put them in therapy. or even give them proper punishment ( jail) so that they dnt further their chance to become even more of a bad person. yes, from common eye sending someone to jail is not Love, but helping them to never get in the wrong path again or giving them the chance to repent is a different kind of love. maybe not directly to them, maybe to your ownself/ society. :)

      Empathy def. the ability to understand and share the feelings of others.
      Compassion def. sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others.
      Empathy is the one that deals with understanding. It doesn't require as strong a feeling as love to accomplish something like empathy though. It is simply, putting yourself in someone else's shoes. Something that does not require you to love the other person in any way.

    One thing that can make you like/ love a person is vulnerability. It really is. Seeing how they think, their emotions, what's hard, what's easy. I've always said that you can like anyone if you get to know them well enough. I guess everyone is loveable in their own way, and there are just people out there who can better and are quicker to appreciate those qualities.

    I'm so glad I've finally found someone else, especially someone so public, who understands this. There's so much hate, bigotry, and above all tribalism in the world, all fundamentally because the natural tendency of the human mind is the dichotomization of the good from the bad. I sorely wish this was understood more widely...

    A wonderful message. Like some in the comments I used to mistake love for complete self-sacrifice and acceptance of abuse. But showing love to all has to include oneself - not a maladapted self-centeredness, but an understanding that you too are human with boundaries and needs. "Love your neighbor as yourself."

    The capacity to love anyone came to me when (as I describe it myself) I experienced an ego death. To completely let go of your pain, anger, even happiness and become one with the true self (the emptiness one experiences or as I call it, the god) after a long session of meditation. I now can't feel any resentment towards anyone, including the people that hurt me badly. I began to see people as simply flawed beings who lash out at others because they are missing something vital from their childhood.
    Of course, that doesn't mean we should allow them to hurt us again. We can unconditionally love others and make peace with the fact that some people are the way they are, maintain a safe distance, and relationship with these folks.
    Thank you for making these videos. I find the lessons really helpful in my day-to-day life.

Girls I know won't take the next step with you sexually until after a couple of dates. Loving people unconditionally - especially your enemies - is a silly idea, in practice. It's like the difference between empathy and a genuine understanding.
    To love somebody is to delude yourself in their favour. You even touch on this. It's weaving excuses for the angry man in the restaurant; or the creepy guy in the street. Better, wouldn't it be, to approach or rely on a standard of - I dunno - sympathy? To see a person's point of view and react in an intelligent and rational (though not robotic) manner?
    Self-delusion is HORRIBLE advice. And though we may need it to function in the messy societies that we inhabit; or under the crippling weights of reality that stifle our dreams or beliefs; to encourage us to weave tall tales about how the skinhead yelling at his shadow loved playing charades on the wall with his father, this is HARDLY productive - and I might even argue dangerous if your intent is to follow up and try to find common ground. :P
    Our emotions are nice; but they aren't an infallible method by which for making decisions. I would argue, in fact; that emotions are more important to the recipient, than the person who feels obligated to feel them. Touching a leper is all well and good; but only if he appreciates it. Really, this whole thing is super duper vague. And I don't appreciate it! :P

    • @azraelexlibris4663
      @azraelexlibris4663 7 років тому +12

      Mystery Yoghurt you speak as of emotions would be the only cornerstone of guidance. Yet their message is to love someone at its very core, without conditions. From there you can make decisions about how you deal with someone. You don't need to delude yourself, everyone can have the value to be loved and true greatness lies in those who can do so. this doesn't prevent you from protecting yourself, you can still see a person in all his colors and still love them.
      emotions are not the best teachers but they are our foundation, they are the reason why we do things in the first place and one of the greatest and most productive ones we can have is
      love.

    • @jaieet
      @jaieet 7 років тому +2

      Azrael Exlibris That doesn't mean anything. If I'm loving somebody, but acting as if I don't love them, then what's the point of even calling my attitude towards them "love"? :P

    • @azraelexlibris4663
      @azraelexlibris4663 7 років тому +4

      Don't think binary, it's a scale. You don't act on off, you have a multitude of actions you perform and those are influenced by the emotions behind it.
      To demonstrate it on a extreme example, you can kill someone you love just as you can kill someone you hate. But your reasons will be very different.

    • @jaieet
      @jaieet 7 років тому +1

      Azrael Exlibris Lemme try again: if my "love" for this stranger is no different than not loving said stranger, then why is it love?
      If I'm not deluded or otherwise infatuated with this person; or if I don't hold them in any particular emotional regard; or value; or think to know them in any way - then by what context do I "love" them?
      Say that person I shoot (that I love) was JUST introduced to me. At gunpoint. He wants to kill my family.
      I love everyone, equally - but I kill him.
      "I love you!", I say, before I shoot him.
      This is the part I'm having trouble grasping. :P

    • @azraelexlibris4663
      @azraelexlibris4663 7 років тому +7

      He is not a complete stranger in some sense, he is a human beeing, further he is an entity that lives. This idea changes the way you perceive the world and thus changes the world with it. It's the difference between watching a movie out of boredom and watching it because you like it.
      It's recognizing the robber you just killed is a person with a story on its own. It doesn't change the fact that you had to kill him, it changes how you live after that.
      This might sound very esoterical, but I'm actually a very empirical founded psychologist.
      I just happened to meet someone who showed me what true and pure living means and that love is an inseparable essence of that.
      You don't need love to live a happy life, but in the end you don't need to live at all. Love is just one of the things that gives live it's worth.

      Yes, I agree. He jumped from being understanding toward others to romantic love, implicitly suggesting (whether he meant to or not) that a lover should put up with all kinds of objectionable behavior because the individual is an injured soul). That is not a good idea and it is not the message of the gospels, and, in fact even with strangers the gospels sometimes show Jesus as being relatively harsh. He threw the money changers out of the Temple. saying they had made it "a den of thieves." Luke has him as saying, "If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters--yes, even their own life--such a person cannot be my disciple." The books of The Bible are written by many, many people, so they are quite contradictory, and it's risky business using them to support one simple idea. It's risky business oversimplifying anything, one can always think of contradictory examples.

      TheSteamGamer1080 essentially yes the whole of our experience and behaviour can be easier explained by going all the way back to the origin most can't remember, that we were born mindless, egoless, totally unconditionally loving babies.
      This baby knows no identity, no mind, so has no bodily boundary, only pure awareness, Buddha mind, blissfully happy when basic needs are met.
      As mind comes awareness of a body seperate from surroundings forms, this bodymind is then used to deal with percieved unloving behaviour, so all kinds of complexes can be associated with it and people can become more and more self conscious, but the crystal clear, boundaryless babe remains as the driver, the inner child, keeping tabs in a self created cocoon.
      So then it can be easily known that to want to be as the inner child is where true happiness is.

    This was a very nice video :)
    I actually wasn't aware that other people don't think like this.
    I have aspergers, so I've developed a way of thinking that's very similar to this. I have to try very hard to put myself in another's shoes. Thank you for broadening my horizons once again! :)

    I appreciate this video so much. This is something I've preached and meditated a lot on. It's my biggest takeaway from Christianity. It's the most beautiful thing about it. I'm more of a Christian agnostic now, but this is still one thing that I believe in and aspire to, even if I fail on it on many occasions. Dion Warwick had it right, "What the world needs now is love sweet love. Not just for some, but for everyone."

    I'm honestly freaking out. This is exactly what I have always felt and thought about everyday of my life. I think about what everyone is going through, why they are the way they are, and what could have happened to them. Sometimes I give people to much credit and to many chances, but for the ones that I help or look past what has happened to them, I have made the greatest friends and heard the most beautiful stories of strength. 2:41-4:20

    This is kinda fishy - some will use "love" to use it on you

      Remember kids even god uses love on you. We learn from history, Christianity converted Central Asian Turks, Uyghurs with message of "god loves you". Then these were converted into Islam with message "god hates non-Muslims". Converted not by sword, but by trend or political reasons. Why? - with new love, old love should be abandoned.

      it's time to stop. k? clever is ego, being totally unconditionally loving annihilates ego to percieve another's need for loving attention.

      We associate clickbait with something that attracts THEN disappoints. We hope to attract then charm and stimulate and console. We may not always get there, but we're trying every week.

    This is the second video I've seen from this channel and I can tell these are going to be a daily thing for me. Constantly, I encounter people who fall into these cycles or "deeply established responses" of the mind. They repeat behaviors that, though self-destructive, are familiar to them and therefore more comforting in a sense. So they keep doing it.
    There aren't many people in my life that say, "Hey, this doesn't seem right. We should question it," which leads to me doubting myself when I question these things. This was a breath of fresh air and also very validating.
