    In this episode of MakeMineMusic, Marc Daniel Nelson shows a trick he came across by
    accident many years ago that became a major influence to how he processes backing
    vocals. In this two step cocktail, there are simple yet effective moves with two separate
    plugins that enhance background vocals in a major way and put them right in the sweet
    spot for the listener.
    Happy Mixing!

      Boz Digital Labs +10db compressor is step 1 for getting my vocals pinned in place.
      Quick question for you, Warren: Any updates on the prizes for the Feb 2023 Rate My Mix mix competition? I got 3rd place (you called my mix "dangerous") and the guy that was corresponding on it said "you'll hear from me this weekend" on May 1. Since then silence. Any updates?

      A parallel MicroPitchSlap from the H3000 by Eventide allows me to musically thicken vocals. I adjust the tuning so it isn’t drastic (5-10 up and down) and decrease the delay slap to well under Haas (10-20ms) so the slap is unnoticeable…

      Eq of choice is Cubase's stock Eq Frequency. It allows you to sidechain Frequencies out of the way of each other as well as being a dynamic eq. Then the lead vocal goes to my outboard gear, BLA Bluey Compressor into a BLA Seventeen compressor. They do something magical to a vocal. Then into a send chain of reverbs and delays.

      Not something a Pro would use but I really like the Chris Lord Alge plugin from Waves. Quick, easy and great sounding for a base line. Also use H Delay on two sends - one set to a regular delay, the other with a faster setting and pingpong.

    Funny you mention hearing “whispering” on certain vocal tracks. A friend of mine who’s done a lot of recording with some of the biggest names in blue grass, said they would sometimes actually record a track of whispered vocals to give the harmonies air. Great video.

    Thanks for a very interesting video and for your generosity by sharing this trick! However I’m not quite sure I got the whole trick? You’re saying that the MJUC compressor on the BGV bus is controlling some of the pokey parts on the bgv and that it is side chained, but from which signal? Is it from the lead vocal to make sure that the compressor creates room for the LV, by ducking the bgv, or is the side chain signal coming from the dry bgv signal, but only the part of the signal above 400 Hz will trigger the compressor to react? Thanks!

  • @BLACKSYNTH
    @BLACKSYNTH 11 місяців тому

    On Vocals I like to EQ it early with a UAD hitsville EQ or similar because it's non sergical and sounds great for just balencing it first. sometimes that fixes 70% of bandwidth problems if I went in with a surgical Pro Q3 and started making cuts and things mearly on, I find oftern I inadvetantly damage the natural timbre of vocal takes. thats my tip..don't jump in and start agressivly fixing things, sure you may get rid of unwanted frequenceys but you can very quickly kill the sound. also Marcs jumper seems to be inside out.

    That expander is effectively acting as a wide eq boost with a very basic envelope controlling it... I cannot think of any reason that would work any better than just a conventional eq. If the band had a narrower q I could see the point, but as is I think this is very close to snake oil territory...

    • @marcdanielnelson317
      @marcdanielnelson317 11 місяців тому

      Not correct. At all. It sounds nothing like boosting the top band of an eq.

    • @lastboxofsparklers
      @lastboxofsparklers 11 місяців тому

      @@marcdanielnelson317 what I wrote is technically correct, if you're hearing something else it is some sort of bias, or possibly the attack and release time (but I doubt the envelope would make any major difference). If the whole idea is that you're using the attack and release to shape the vocals you should have probably explained how you did that.

    • @lastboxofsparklers
      @lastboxofsparklers 11 місяців тому

      @@marcdanielnelson317 another thing it could potentially be you're hearing is the "smearing" at the ends of the curve, but that is usually not a thing people like, and again something you should have explained. As is, this "trick" is just too random to be used as a general thing.

    • @iam-music
      @iam-music 2 місяці тому

      Because its now time domain and the highest freq transients are proportionally louder so the tone memory of the brain 'sees' it differently. It is nothing like a static boost...its not the transmitter, its the receiver ;-)
