    Great vid, thank you. Agree 100% about the pupils, I’ve always used at least 1 continuous light behind camera for that reason, even when using strobes

    I LOVE shooting at golden hour/blue hour and have been using HSS to shoot some of my portraits with a Godox TT685 speedlite. This video just convinced me to make the jump to LED lighting. I just ordered the Godox SLB-60W and Fotodiox deep parabolic softbox. One day I'll make the jump to the AD600 Pro or even the AD400 Pro

    a good well balanced review... I use my rotolight Neo Leds for dusk,night & urbex shoots ..often now with the westcott halo (umbrella mount round soft box) ..& it gives beautiful soft light & something you never mentioned ..catchlight in the eye is nice... Leds have there limitations , I use a speedlight or strobe for day time shoots especially in very bright sun light... I do like the look of aperture 120 light... lovely images by the way..

    • @fjhphoto
      @fjhphoto  6 років тому +1

      GilbertTV thanks, man. Yeah, I wanted to include more but somehow forgot. Meant to mention this and also how easier it is to focus in the night with a LED than with a speedlite.

    • @GilbertTV
      @GilbertTV 6 років тому +1

      I forgot that one too.. Ive always used LEDs for night portraits so dont think about how dificult it must be to focus with out a continious light..

    great tuto for lighting, posing,... but aputure is quite expensive and led in general. Could we do the same with one godox v1 for rim light with maggrid+magsphere and a ad200pro in a magbox (or S2+ez glow beauty dish 85cm) and a L-858D posemeter ? I would be interested to see tuto on such alternate setup.

    Try Nanlite 500. Probably the most powerful LED. Nanlite 300 & 500 Forza are s-mount/Bowens mount. The real drawback to LED is that you can't control the background the way you can with flash. Using a light meter is a time saver, instead of spinning your dials all over till you finally guess right.

  • @ClarkeLSmith
    @ClarkeLSmith 5 років тому

    Yep... another con about shooting with LEDs, as demonstrated at 10:38 is that you can't freeze motion that well... So blurred faces can happen... but very nice work otherwise. Nice composition, nice lighting.

    Bjr I have some questions to ask you I would like to know if you use your camera in manual and if the flash and also in manual and if you work in iso auto, and I notice that you often use the largest opening of your objective then or do you put the focus on the eye or other hand thank you. I am waiting for your proclamation. see you soon

    For the daylight shots I actually wouldn't have known the difference if you didn't tell me you were using continuous LED lights. The night shots look awesome. They definitely have a cinematic look to them.

    • @fjhphoto
      @fjhphoto  6 років тому +3

      dragonfist25 thank you! That's pretty much why I've been enjoying led lights. They look exactly like off camera flash but take some of the guesswork away. Of course, I'll still use my strobes and speedlites when I need to but I have been enjoying LEDs lately. =)

    • @gmcubed
      @gmcubed 5 років тому

      Probbaly because the other light is stronger, meaning if he didn't you wouldn't be able to see the light from the led enough.

  • @joes2828
    @joes2828 6 років тому +2

    What's ur take on light meters? I've been on the fence. I'm sure it'd make the job easier but $300 for the good ones lol idk

    • @fjhphoto
      @fjhphoto  6 років тому

      joe s good question. I've never used one and don't plan to unless I do a shoot that requires it. I've been fine without one and think that they do have a place for certain photographers and certain jobs but for portrait work that isn't commercial you're better off without one. I learned how light works without a meter and think that really benefited me more than if I did use one.

    • @joes2828
      @joes2828 6 років тому +1

      FJH Photography yeah I can relate. It takes A LOT of practice to be able to estimate more or less the lighting condition and inverse square of law in regards to light.

    • @fjhphoto
      @fjhphoto  6 років тому +1

      Grzegorz Panewnicki I asked the model if the light was too bright and she told me many times it wasn't. Karina, the model, isn't a professional model so yes you can use the lights to take portraits of anyone. 😊

    Hello from Kyiv Ukraine. I shoot fashion models and portraits and I am also a Sony shooter. You should check out the Rotolight Aeos and Neo 2. These are LEDs but they are different and are leading in LED technology for photography. I use Godox flashes and strobes and Rotolight LEDs and have no complaints. I am not criticising you but just sharing some information.

  • @szbert
    @szbert 4 роки тому

    Did you know that many people shoot inside, studios, and elsewhere? There, LEDs are great because they're WYSIWYG just like a mirrorless EVF. Strobes are great too. Especially when you need power or to freeze action. But LEDs have a place.

    • @fjhphoto
      @fjhphoto  6 років тому +4

      Thanks for watching! Haha yes, the battery dying was unfortunate but thankfully I had the spare. For these specific situations where I'm working in low light I am absolutely loving LEDs. One thing I forgot to mention in this video that was really important was getting focus on the subject. With speedlites it is pretty hard to get focus unless you have someone helping out by getting their iPhone out and using it's flashlight. With LEDs it's a non issue. But again, LEDs are great for low light. Once you start to shoot earlier the LEDs won't be able to give you a correct exposure on the subject and the background as it won't be powerful enough to do so.

    • @FAMUCHOLLY
      @FAMUCHOLLY 6 років тому +1

      Thanks! I think I will take a long hard look at LEDs for my upgrade.

  • @jackedupjunkers1922
    @jackedupjunkers1922 6 років тому +1

    Great video! One thing I think is worth noting is that when working with LED lighting you can't just change shutter speed to control ambient. Since its continuous, slowing the shutter will also increase the exposure of the subject and the environment and vice versa with increasing the shutter speed

      Jimmy Tu easily the Aputure 120D. It can use Bowens mount and that's a huge plus. The company Aputure is also a big reason why I invested in them. FJH Photography it looks like it has enough power to demolish the rotolight widely promoted by Jason lenair

    • @fjhphoto
      @fjhphoto  6 років тому

      I'm not a fan of the Rotolight at all for various reasons. In terms of power it probably doesn't compete at all with the 120D but the 120D is more expensive. However, the fact that the 120D has a bowens mount is so worth it. The Aputure lights all work together easily and the remote is included free plus the company is just great. Rotolight has been a disappointment from anything I've read or seen from it.

    The beat of the music at the end sounds quite sharp and hurt my ears. Just a random note, maybe something to consider. Those generic beats are not for everyone, so I'd suggest some that don't have this sharpness to them. I can't concentrate on anything else unless I completely mute everything.
