Great deer loads for most of us. Because they are so equal across the board, I think it would be quite useful to do a point of impact comparison between weights.
Great comparison and test. This is excellent that you put all 3 together at the same time. What a huge help. I am pleased and impressed with results. I too would prefer at least 100fps more in all 3 weights. But this was a great demonstration of performance. Many thanks.
That is a great video. I can see why your channel has grown so much. It’s great you’re exposing the marketing bs of ammo manufacturers. Keep it up. I’m enjoying your content
Because I will be doing most, if not all, of my deer hunting in a rather open area this year I will be loading my trusty old Savage '99E with the middle range weight .308 Corelokt ammo. My rifle seems to like it best of all the other ammo brands I've tried in it and the bullet weight seems to be its favorite. Corelokt may not be all it once was, but my rifles digest it without complaint compared to other well-known brand names I have tried in my lever guns.
Great video. Very informative, just purchased 6 boxes of this ammo in 3 different calibers. In accuracy tests performed on other channels it has shone great promise. Also just purchased a couple rifle stock cuffs, a lever wrap and a latigo sling during your Labor day sale. Thanks for all you do and God Bless.
Great job. I love these bulletin weight comparisons. It would be really cool to see a similar video of Barnes TTSX in either 308 or 30-06. Keep up the good work!
With the info you give us and a ballistic calculator pretty accurate trajectories can be calculated. But one thing missing from most of the factory information is the minimum velocity at which the bullet will expand. With that information, in addition to the actual velocity, you can easily see what should be the maximum distance you should be using the load for.
Good video! Most ammo makers test with a 24" barrel, so you can already expect slower than what the box says. But it sounds like these would be weak even with a 24" barrel.
My adult son used the .308 165 grain tipped core lokt tipped on a big doe. The shot was 75 yards standing broadside. The bullet struck the middle of the shoulder, normally a bang flop with the old core lokt psp. This bullet was not a complete pass through and the doe ran a long way before entering private property. The deer was not recovered. I’m not sure these bullets are any good. We’ll be looking for alternatives.
Thanks Mason for your time and money spent helping the average hunter know what to use for ethical hunting. Still needs to be proofed in their firearm but takes a lot of guess work out for the normal shooter.
i normally reload my own ammo but if i needed factory loaded i would defiantly give these a go, but not sure the velocity out of my 20" barrel i get 2670 with 168 gr bullets.
Remington likely made jacket a tad thinner at nose and slightly softer lead on 180, knowing they will be traveling a bit slower and thus engineered it so it would still open up. Or your gel had a slight density difference when you tested it. Or temperature difference idk, give me the 165, I will use it on all of em elk or deer it will work.
I get about 30 fps more with the 150 and 165 grain with my 22 inch barreled 308 and about 70 fps with my 24 inch 308. My guess is the silencer, sometimes they add velocity but for the most part they rob about 20-30 fps of velocity.
You must remember factories use a universal receivers and a 24 INCH, BULL GARREL to test the 308 WIN. SO YOUR 22 inch barrel will have a lesser velocity.
Yes. It's been rumored that Hornady does contracts for Remington. No real surprise. Hornady from a capacity standpoint is a bullet making monster these days.
Test 7mm-08 with 140 grain corelokt psp it flies the same as the 150 grain tipped and in other tests does 28 inches of penetration with 2xs expansion. Corelokt shocks sheds weight and down sizes to penetrate perfect bullets the 140 7mm 08 retained 72%.
Appreciate your work Mason. It's really very helpful to see the results from different ammo types on your channel. Ammo has become ridiculously expensive. Especially here in Canada. Lord Thunderin'!!! It really helps seperate the wheat from the chaff and helps folks avoid paying extortionate prices for s**t ammo for hunting. I'm also interested in your leather products. Dear Mason Outdoors, If you had to by one ammo brand in one grain size in 308 for hunting mostly deer, and occasionally elk and moose, what would that be? Truly appreciate all you do here.
165 grain. Federal fusion, accubond, partition, there are a lot of good options. Also don’t sleep on the 130 grain ttsx and although it’s a bit large the federal terminal ascent is awesomeeeee. There are a lot of options to be honest. Don’t be afraid to pick a bullet you feel confident in and just hunt with it. Many people with cheap rifles and cheap bullets have put game down. Practice a lot.
I love the 150 on deer and do not need to resight for 165 on elk neither takes no more than 2 steps. In 3006 I love the 180 Psp in sp and psp. For up to yes that's right grizzly and I have had success with all this game Corelokt puts it down.
What I find interesting is that the SST is a tipped interlock bullet. The core tip is a core lock that has been tipped. In both cases, they do not retain as much weight as the soft point counterpart. Which makes me very curious for the federal fusion tipped.
Would love to see a 180gr face off 180rn sp vs 180psp vs 180 tipped sp be interesting to see if same "style" of bullets just different configuration of tip
If they all retail within a few $ of each other, the load, as you have said, that shoots the best groups should be the pick. If those blocks could talk, I could just hear some saying, "Why do I always have to be the first block in the line?! Number three just sits back there hardly getting touched, while I get smoked and flipped and rolled in the dirt and grass!" 😂
G.K. U.S.A. Try the Hornady Superformance ammo. They give you not only what is stated on the box, but an additional 150- 200 fps velocity. I know because I chronographed them in 270, .308, 30-06, and 338. All were very accurate.
The simple answer is it depends on the size of the game you are hunting. There are exceptions, such as hunters who want deeper penetration vs more expansion. Those velocity numbers indicate the 308 is a warmed up 30-30, greatly inferior to the 30-06.
Another great video. So, I don’t understand suppressors. Your 22” barrel is 30” with the suppressors. Wouldn’t it still make sense to have a longer barrel and get the speed. If I wanted to shoot a quiet gun I’d shoot pellet rifles. I want speed and power. Even if you use a 26” barrel it is more portable that a canned 22”.
The overwhelming (as in statistically almost all) majority of 308 Winchester rifles commercially available have 22” or shorter barrels. The length of the suppressor and the suppressor itself is materially irrelevant, I’m using it because I’m firing a bunch of stuff on a range for several days straight and would rather not damage my hearing any more than necessary. I don’t hunt with this rifle at all and would hate to with a giant honking suppressor on the end or with some unnecessarily long barrel.
@@masonleather_outdoors but I’m the guy that thinks a 7mm-378 weatherby magnum with a 30” barrel would make a great whitetail rig. But I understand why one would use a supressor at a bench. On a bench I wear foamies and muffs at the range but all of my guns have terminator or precision armament brakes. Anywho was just curious. Love your show and content.
There is a sweetspot, kind of ballance between cartridge/Bullet. I personally think for a 308 it's 150 grns, My 30-06 is 165 grns and for a 300WM it's 180 grns. Of Course you can load 130 to 220 grns Bullets. BUT??

The blocks would rip themselves apart, you can do that with pistol rounds, not rifles of any real power. The strap doesn’t give, the block gives around it, it rips itself apart. I’ve done it. No penetration depth is lost, by the time the block is moving the bullet is already in the second, third, fourth block.

It was a great idea to compare the three weights in the same video. As for the speed, which is too low when compared to the package data, those two extra inches to 24'' do make a difference, but they will not reach the posted speed. That is obviously marketing overstatement. Too bad. A serious figure would have made their product unquestionable...
I haven't tried the tipped, but have been using the 180s in -06 for 40 years. Not great, consistently get core/cup separation, but for everything in Florida they work fine.
Green box ammo was our family staple back in the 70’-80’s , those 165g laid out lots game deer , elk , nilgai I shoot Norma ammo now days, and they are a little faster generally also, why hunters get chinched on velocity is beyond my comprehension, ammo manufacturers should be punished for false information when it is -100fps average
Devastating wound cavities! Crazy to see what a basic polymer tipped bullet will do. For most game I believe these are better than bonded or monolithic copper bullets
@@craigparker4108 Look up Nathan Foster. There’s a substantial amount of research on why a bullet losing weight is a good thing and it’s one of the hallmarks of cup and core bullets. Weight retention has its merits in specific situations on specific animals but it is not nearly as important as what marketing makes it seem
@@craigparker4108 look up Nathan foster and the research he’s done on ballistics. A good article of his is ‘homogenous copper bullets can be inhumane’ and in this he talks about how important it is for bullets to shed weight and why cup and core bullets are generally the best thing to use
The ammo world has passed remington by. Their quality control has been questionable at best, as has the revolving door of ownership. The tip is whipped cream on horse shit and 5 years late. They are also more expensive than fusion ammo, which is a lot of bullet for the money. Thanks for giving it "the old college try".
The ammo world has not passed Remington by. Remington and Federal As well as CCI Speer are sister companies now, are sharing technology and even product production. What Remington did or did not do, or was doing prior to Visita getting the plant back up and running out of the huge bankruptcy aquisition is history. Remington ammo is on store shelves virtually everywhere that's anywhere now. Classic loads and new Premium loads are just as good as ever. Wouldn't surprise me to see even more premium offerings from Remington in the future since anything inside the corporate umbrella is theoretically available to them now. But that will of course depend on marketing strategy.
.308 just kinda chokes on bullets heavier than 165 grains in weight unless you want to get a little devil may care attitude about peak average working pressures. In a bolt action rifle you can warm a .308 somewhat. In gas operated autoloading action its gonna have to be a bit milder for product liability concerns.
I'm old and haven't bought factory ammo in over 30 years. But back in the day it stated; ammo tested in a 26/28" fixed test barrel (not a rifle) right on the side of the box.
Not anymore. And the overwhelming majority of factory rifles in non-magnum calibers have 22” or shorter barrels. I know what barrel length the factories use, I was being sarcastic. They use ridiculous, unrealistic and not-in-common-use barrel lengths with particularly tight specs to create unrealistic velocity numbers for marketing purposes.
@@masonleather_outdoors exactly, its all about marketing! They should indicate on the box or at least on their website as to what barrel length was used for the velocity tests.
It is a cup and core bullet, it is not bonded. They use a mechanical lock to supposedly hold the bullet together with the shape of the jacket. Hornady Interlock is also a cup and core bullet that had a small ring in the jacket that is supposed to hold it together.
It’s a very different bullet, neither designed nor intended to perform like a bonded soft point. I think these performed extremely well for what they are and are intended to do.
I won't touch any remington corelokt ammo. I had a bad batch of 30-06 with about 50% of the cases dented. 1 case was damaged so bad that it wouldn't chamber. Poor quality control. Not during the pandemic
150s should be going around 2950 for box ammo. Getting tired of ammo companys watering down their ammo to make better profits. They used to call them reduced recoil ammo, now its standard ammo for them.

99% sure Tipped Core Lokts are just Hornady SSTs. They’re both owned by Vista Group
Hornady is not owned by Vista. Federal, CCI and Remington are.
You’re right maybe it was Federal I was think of. Either way pretty sure Hornady is making that bullet for them.
.308 just kinda chokes on bullets heavier than 165 grains in weight unless you want to get a little devil may care attitude about peak average working pressures. In a bolt action rifle you can warm a .308 somewhat. In gas operated autoloading action its gonna have to be a bit milder for product liability concerns.
24" min. I use a 26".
And statistically almost every current production 308Win has a 22” or shorter barrel.
It's been like that for years, that's why I started hand loading in 1981. It's amazing how much you can gain by doing so.@masonoutdoors_masonleather
There are no losers here. They all did great. Thanks for posting.

Terrible velocity for all of them
Not trying to be a smart Alec, but the Remington Core-Lokt is not a cup and core bullet hence the name Core-Lokt.
It is a cup and core bullet, it is not bonded. They use a mechanical lock to supposedly hold the bullet together with the shape of the jacket. Hornady Interlock is also a cup and core bullet that had a small ring in the jacket that is supposed to hold it together.
Congratulations on not knowing what you’re talking about.
@@masonleather_outdoors 😂😂
Don’t worry….no one is going to associate the word ‘smart’ with you….promise!
@@BrokenBarBox I bet you get associated with A-hole quite often, don’t you.
Not impressive compared to the 2.6x-2.7 expansion and 97-98% weight retention you got with the Federal Fusions Mason…
It’s a very different bullet, neither designed nor intended to perform like a bonded soft point. I think these performed extremely well for what they are and are intended to do.
The velocities are weak.
I don’t think a 180 pound deer will be able to tell the difference…
wont ever touch rem ammo again, only ammo I've had multiple rounds fail to fire in multiple firearms.
I won't touch any remington corelokt ammo. I had a bad batch of 30-06 with about 50% of the cases dented. 1 case was damaged so bad that it wouldn't chamber. Poor quality control. Not during the pandemic
Poor showing for the 180g bullet.
The sd and es of all the weight bullets are garbage!! You can’t consistently hit targets at range with that much spread and deviation!
But he put all three of the 180’s pretty close together.
Who cares, these are hunting loads and the overwhelming majority of deer and other medium game are shot under 100 yards.
150s should be going around 2950 for box ammo. Getting tired of ammo companys watering down their ammo to make better profits. They used to call them reduced recoil ammo, now its standard ammo for them.
REMINGTON factory is always slow !!!!
