    You are so goddamn right with the db (decibels) they are so reliable. ISOs are the norm now but they are not standardized, it's a mess. Db may sound old but it's consistent.

    Fantastic video again. You have a great way of conveying the information we all need. This video does show up the FX9 to be quite badly thought through on many counts. At this price range Im really staggered this is the case...yet, I still want one!

      @extrashot  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the comment Al... I don't know if it's badly thought through or just the usual case of letting customers test the beta firmware before they start sorting it out properly! We do seem to be treated like paying guinea pigs by Sony sometimes! However, for all the issues... I've still found it really easy to use, and so easy to achieve amazing picture quality. It looks like 90% of the Venice for 25% of the cost !!!

    The dB tip is a huge help. You’ve hit the nail on the head about shooting film and digital.
    If I shoot solo or working a small job, no one will be using light meters. Run n gun. So why use ISO? Only when I shoot a bigger commercial or narrative, will there be light meters and proper controlled environments.

    • @extrashot
      @extrashot  4 роки тому

      Thanks for the kind comment Tim... much appreciated!
      If there's no light meters around... then 'Gain' mode is much easier to control. Worth remembering that you can also adjust the gain in 1db steps all the way down to -3db... and the noise will always be exactly what you expect! I've met so many people recently who shoot Cinetone, and think the native ISO is 800 !!! 😳

      Thank you for the kind comment. Something I forgot to mention about the first two file ID's... it's easy to move those around and delete the first two just by popping your SD card in a computer. Simply renaming the files moves the position in the camera memory... ie rename 004.ALL to 005.ALL to move it down one spot. If you delete a file it just creates an empty slot. Easy! (don't try doing anything inside the file... it won't work !!!) 😉

      extrashot no doubt. Are the 23.98 frames Progressive ? If they are then creating DCPs should not be a problem for films. In Europe and the UK 25fps is a DCP standard so it would not be a big deal to do a cinematic release in those formats.

    Hey whats the exact model of your metabones adaptor? I have the MarkIV and I don't think it works well regarding Autofocus. You have a Cine something yeah?

    • @extrashot
      @extrashot  3 роки тому +1

      Hi, I have the Metabones Canon EF Lens to Sony E Mount T CINE Smart Adapter, I think it's the (MB-EF-E-BT6)... but I doubt this will make a difference to the autofocus performance, I think it's just a different lens locking mechanism. I suspect, the autofocus issues are mainly determined by the Metabones firmware, which is usually updated on both models simultaneously, so it looks like it's possibly the same? I had a few issues initially with my adaptor not being in the right 'mode' so it just wouldn't track focus on the FX9, but it got better once I'd worked that out. Just make sure you've got the latest Metabones firmware as they do update it regularly.

      Hi Awehwolf, I'm afraid you can't load user LUTs into the FX9. Sony have given us 5 built-in LUTs to use on the viewfinder or monitor outputs, but you can't load your own yet... I say yet, because it may come in a future firmware update! To be fair, they are only meant to be used as a guide to help production... it wasn't initially designed to be burnt into the recording... so they probably can't understand why we'd want it !!! 😳

    So quick question. What happens when I'm in db mode and I go down to -3 db. Am I getting a cleaner image this way?

    • @extrashot
      @extrashot  3 роки тому

      Hi Joel, that's a really good question. In theory, yes... reducing gain should result in a cleaner picture. However, you'll also be sacrificing a little bit of dynamic range. When the camera is designed, 0db is the point that should give the best signal to noise ratio for whatever information is coming off the sensor. When you go to -3db you're reducing the amplification, making the whole picture 1/2 stop darker... but you're also pushing the black levels down possibly into the noise floor of the cameras circuits. This may not matter unless you want to retrieve any of those shadows later... you may find you can't because they've been clipped. Whenever we talk of clipping the picture it's easy to assume we're talking about the highlights, but you can clip the blacks as well! The image from the FX9 is so clean I'd be surprised if you can spot -3db but I'd need to test that... it's a good idea for a video. Thank you!

    Until Sony makes the S35 mode an assignable button function, this “all file” method seems great. 24 seconds is longer than tapping a button, but I remember how long the Varicam LT used to take to reboot when changing any settings.......

    • @extrashot
      @extrashot  4 роки тому +1

      It's all we've got at the moment... and it's much quicker than trying to put everything back individually! That Varicam was mad... I'd forgotten about that... and you had to do it so often too! I believe they improved it in later firmware (a bit). 😂

  • @DavidBattistella

      Hi David... I actually turned it on in in real time on the previous video... just timed it and it was about 7 seconds. Turn on is amazingly quick! When it does an automatic reboot after an 'ALL FILES' load, it takes a little bit longer because it has to shut down as well... I've just timed it for you and the whole process took 24 seconds. Much quicker than going through all those menus trying to remember everything that has to be reset !!! 👍

    Paul, good tips there and as someone looking to retire soon, I'll work in gain thanks! A serious question though, last Sony cameras we brought were the EX3's many years ago and had some horrific experiences with the IR contamination on the CMOS chips. Had to keep buying and replacing T1 filters and are worried this FS9 suffers from the same problem? Scoured the net and can't find anyone to confirm or deny this is the case. So does this camera show proper black fabric AS black, rather than a dirty brown, under tugsten or bright sunlight? Many thanks for any advice :)

    • @extrashot
      @extrashot  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Reg, We're all going back to gain now... it's the future!
      There's a good independent ACS discussion about the FX9 colour accuracy on Vimeo here:
      vimeo.com/381979485 ... Blacks looked black when I tested... I know the FX9 has an IR cut filter, but this is very different from the FS7 design, which in my opinion had a poor effect on skin tones. Completely unrelated to your IR contamination question....generally, colour rendition on the FX9 is much improved. It does some very clever colour shifts when using the variable ND. Because the VND causes a known colour shift as you increase the density... the FX9 colour shifts internally to keep everything correct. If I had a complaint about the overall colour... the Cinetone look (as it comes out of the box) is a little too "green" for my tastes... and this can lead to quite a green in the blacks feel !!!

    • @extrashot
      @extrashot  3 роки тому +2

      No... it's fine idea and the FF 1080 still looks great! More than half my clients still want 1080p as well. In the early days of large sensor cameras, there was a lot of pixel binning and aliasing going on because high megapixel stills cameras didn't mathematically scale for 1080 video very well. It was a compromise. However, this 6K sensor has been designed to downsample perfectly for video, both 4K and HD. The FX9 downsampling is what makes this camera look so good!

    There I really enjoy your tutorials I am a DP in Toronto that owns an FX9 and I've been shooting with it for the last week and I have one little question that I hope you can help me out with. When sending a picture to a monitor and keeping all the information on the monitor is there a way of turning off the Fishel tracking on the monitor. The reason I'm asking is it's very distracting to the producer or the director that's watching what we're shooting. I do love this feature Fishel tracking and I'd love to keep it of course in the viewfinder but how do I turn it off on the monitor?

    • @extrashot
      @extrashot  4 роки тому

      Thanks Michel, very kind. Do you mean the face tracking squares? Generally it's an 'all or nothing' approach to the information added to the outputs... ie. the director see's whatever you have in the viewfinder... or nothing at all. What I have found is.... if you turn off the "Face Detection Frame" in the Monitoring/Display on/off menu... it does disappear... but then when you need to see or use it to choose a face etc... just press the 'Set' button and it will reappear for a few seconds to let you check and choose... it then disappears again. Which I think is what you want. Of course, this does really on a certain amount of AF confidence on your part... but what is good is that when it's locked onto a face the little green "Focus" light illuminates on the side of the camera. If no face is locked then the light disappears and you get a little exclamation mark next to the AF settings in your viewfinder (top right). Let me know if that doesn't make any sense at all. I think my confidence in the system depends on how many faces I've got in the frame at one time !!! 👍

      @@extrashot Thanks for the info I appreciate it. One last thing I noticed is that I have a client on Monday that wants to shoot 59.97 and when I turned that Setting the full-size sensor goes to super 35 which is a little bit disappointing. Hopefully these two issues will be fixed on the next firmware upgrade fingers crossed.

    • @extrashot
      @extrashot  4 роки тому

      @@michelbisson1 I had exactly the same issue on my first job with the FX9... the client wanted 50i (interlaced) for a live presentation, and I never really thought about the sensor reading that as 50 full frames before interlacing the half fields. In my head, interlaced has always been half the bandwidth, and therefore half the stress, on the processing... wrong! I had to switch to S35 to get interlaced... don't even think of using the FF 2K for anything less than 100fps as the aliasing is horrible! At the moment, you can only get a maximum of 30fps off the full frame sensor, although I keep hearing rumours that a 5K 50P solution is being tested for upcoming firmware. I don't know if that's a 5K scan of the FF sensor (like the 2K does it) or actually a cropped size? Either way... it will be welcome! 👍

      @@Saphir3000 You're right, many still are shot 23.976p... especially if it's a potential TV broadcast or US DVD release. it's a historical thing because of syncing sound in post houses. It's amazing how many modern post houses still can't cope with true 24. But thankfully, things are changing in this new digital world. Hopefully, 23.976 will shortly die along with the NTSC analogue TV system, 3:2 pulldown and bloody drop frame timecode! I see they now market a slight variation of this specially for the FX9 (350-2207)... but the only difference seems to be a strange wedge plate that means you have to remove the shoulder pad from under the camera? Not sure why they did that? Anyway... I'm very happy with mine. It doesn't raise the camera too high (unlike some) and provides adjustment for sliding the camera front or back for balance on the shoulder. You can also move the shoulder pad which is simply held on with magnets. I haven't seen anything else which would make me want to change anytime soon?

      That's a good question... I think it very much depends on the type of work you do? I moved from the F5 (same sensor as the FS7) and it feels like a massive step up in usability, but that difference will be less of a step change with the FS7. So it comes down to that picture quality... is it worth paying a significant sum for, and will your clients appreciate it? The sensor in the FS7 was designed around 8 years ago and things have advanced considerably since then. The FX9 is all about that sensor... it's a peach. Not just because of the 'Full Frame' look, but also the dual base ISO, low light performance, the way it handles the highlights and of course that Venice like profile! You can probably tell... I love the look of the FX9, probably the most 'filmic' looking camera I've ever owned... but the big question is... will my clients notice?

That would be a surprise! Many people are talking about a smaller (FX6?) camera to take over from the FS5M2, and I'm obviously convinced that the new gap between the FX9 and the Venice is too big not to have something new replacing the F55 soon... but everything points towards that being a CineAlta badged £25K type of camera... which is probably too much for me and my clients! The images from the FX9 are now so close to what you can get from the Venice, it'll be difficult to see what value they can add in picture quality?

Wondered if that was a clue, and sure enough tried running the FX9 on an iPad mini with no cell connection. Everything worked perfectly, no disconnects. So my current theory is the phone periodically tries to connect to the internet via the FX9 and somehow that causes it to disconnect.

      It's relatively critical for cinema applications where DCI spec calls for 24.00 fps and not 23.976fps. That 1% difference can have real consequences in a post workflow for cinema and later DCP outputs. BUT that's really the only time it's a serious consideration. And truthfully, you could work in 23.976 for an entire films post-production and simply to a 24.00 conversion at the end of the production for cinema projection (many many docs do this).

    Subscribed! We should receive 3 FX9s soon at work. Its an exciting camera. I own a FS5 and I love it. So this looks like a nice logical step for me. We also have a F55. Do you think the FX9s will outperform the F55? I'm sure they will be easier to use. I feel the F55 is a dinosaur. But, there are people here whom have never used a FS5 or 7. And hence, they may not understand you can have a lot of power in a small package. The F55 is heavy and huge. Works great on a dolly or tripod. But, I wouldn't want to have to shoulder it.

    • @extrashot
      @extrashot  4 роки тому

      Personally, I think the FX9 replaces the F5/55 cameras. I know some people assumed it was an FS7 replacement, but Sony still make and sell those... it's over a year since the dealers have sold any F5/55's !!! Obviously, the F55 has the global shutter but I think the FX9 out performs it in every other way. Sensors have progressed a lot in the 8 years since the F55 was designed. The FX9 sensor is much cleaner, more light sensitive, and because of all the downsampling from 6K, doesn't need anywhere near the same edge correction to make it look sharp. The Venice colour science and lush full frame sensor are just the icing on the cake. Looking forward to an Atomos recorder and ProRes RAW... that'll be the nail for the F55.
      P.S. thanks for the sub... hope you enjoy your cameras!

I've got the 28-135 f4 and I love it... almost no breathing and although f4 doesn't sound very fast... remember you've got to apply the crop factor to the aperture for the full frame sensor (1.5). So when you're shooting full frame, it has the depth of field of a 1.5x faster lens for the same field of view!
