great video and the images coming off the FX9 are stunning! The whole Canon v Sony fan boy debate is funny, I loved the video by Tony Northrup comparing colour science and in a blind test involving 1,500 people the vast majority voted Sony as having the most pleasing colours and those voters included Canon, Nikon and Fuji fans boys ;)
I REALLLYYYYY hope they put the S-Cinetone in the A7SIII !!!! It would be a really good stepup camera to the FX9 for many people. Plus the lenses would work on both cameras; no silly adapters
Great video. What are your thoughts on the size and weight of the FX9 and it’s versatility for documentary film making? I’m still curious to see what the specifications of a potential FX6 are and which I assume will be a more compact body.
It's heavier that the Fs7, but not heavy enough to become unusable. A bit smaller would have been nice but it fits better on the shoulder because of this. I found the Fs5 too flimsy, I dunno what the Fx6 will be like
Very valuable as always ! I'm looking to learn more about "treatment" building, espacially for documentary work ! Would that be something you could make a video about ??
Even though you are impartial to cameras. You have a lot of Sony bodies even if you pair it with Canon glass. Would you say that the A7SIII excites you more than the Canon R5?
I agree, XAVC is fantastic! I also like Prores a lot though and getting Prores Raw through the Shogun 7 seems intriguing. Mark, will you be trying out that combo? Just curious.
That camera looks awesome is it really expensive? And is AVCHD hard to edit with I have to convert it to MP4 to edit it what is your advice I have a Sony a5000 AMD I want to use AVCHD but it is hard to Figure out
How are you getting such good looking 120p out of the FX9? My tests with it it aliases and the pixel binning looks nasty so I've avoided using it too much. But your 120 looks totally usable. I 100% agree with you. I really have no regrets investing in this guy. It produces some amazing images and I personally LOVE the efficient codec 'cause I don't have the money for all those hard drives. And I'm very camera agnostic myself. I was a Panasonic fanboy for a long time, and still use the GH5. And I love Blackmagic cams. And I love the FX9. Canon's the only brand of the major ones I've not really messed with, oddly. Nothing against em, just never had the chance.
Great looking video. As a FX9 owner myself I was wondering what is your Slog3 experience on the sensor concerning overexposure. I did a lot of test and mostly shoot the camera rated as Iso 400/500 (in based 800 Iso). So basically not pushing the exposure as much as on a Fs7. But what's your experience. :)
Hi pro bro please tell us does panasonic eva-1 12k resolve to the Netflix and does that camcorder has some issues with red light appear or something else and you really awesome we love the way you are god bless
Thanks for the update. Do you use the autofocus of the FX9 a lot for example in this sports shot? Or manual focus most of the time? Looks hard to nail focus when you are running around fast moving objects with that shallow dof!
Is Sony FX9 still the best camera for documentaries? I'm a pro documentary maker and going to buy a new camera, are now in a camera research face, and feel a little lost...
I got a used sony f55 with R7 recorder -16 bit xcon raw, 4k 120- for the same price as the fx9. I think that should be a very real option for people looking in this price range.
The big issue with shooting f55 and f5 is that they are a lot harder to solo operate than the fx9. There is also the codec. Much better high ISO. And autofocus. If you’re going to shoot narrative film, f55 makes a lot of sense. But if you’re a runner gunner, solo op then the fx9 really can’t be beat in this price range.
@@JeremiahBostwick I somewhat agree. I just tested the fx9 vs the f55 and I found the fx9 super fun to use but the extra weight of the f55 acually makes it way more stable ( along with the global shutter) the motion looks a lot better. you can shoot raw with xcon all day so Idk what you mean by codec. Fx9 is definitely cleaner but thats not to say you cant get a clean image out of the f55. Im a solo run and gun operator and still chose the f55 I just like the image out of it way more, thats more important to me, but with that said fx9 I see being the better choice depending on what work you do and what you believe is more important for how you work.
@@andrewskater17 By codec, I was referring to what Mark brought up in the video. It uses XAVC 10-bit 4-2-2 (+LOG). It's a very versatile format and it's data rate is much lower than RAW at I believe around 600 Mb/s. Raw generally is 1500 Mb/s and up which is a lot higher. If you're shooting narrative or doc work where you're accumulating literally hours of footage every day, day in and day out that adds up. This is also not to mention the fact that SxS cards are significantly more expensive than the XQD cards the FX9 uses. The major advantages of the FX9 has over the F55 are numerous, but in short they are: dual native base ISO (800 and 4000), Auto-focus, 15-stops of dynamic range, powerful lightweight intra-frame codec, down-sampled 6k, 180 fps full frame 1080p, 4 channel audio, dual audio recording (you can record the same audio channel at two different audio levels for safety), less expensive media, E-mount (which can then mount virtually any lens cheaply), Venice color science (and vastly improved color science in general). The F55 advantages over the FX9 are primarily global shutter, RAW capability, true cinema fps' (if you really need specifically 24fps and 60fps as opposed to 23.93 and 59.97 as an example) and really that's the end of the list. To me, if you don't need to be shooting in RAW constantly (and I'd personally say the use cases are very small; it's mostly for narrative film with a decent sized budget), the FX9 is going to be a better buy for at least 90% of people. Just the AF and dual-native ISO make it a workhorse that makes an awful lot of sense for working professionals in environments that aren't always lit and where 'anything can happen'. For corporate, wedding, event, doc, and commercial work the FX9 is a shoe in. The F5/F55 are fantastic at narrative, commercial, primarily. But then also okay at shooting doc work provided you have a bigger budget for all of the storage necessary for the footage. At the end of the day, both cameras are fantastic. But to me it's obvious which camera is more versatile. Which was the point of this video. The FX9 without a doubt is one of the most versatile cameras without a doubt. It doesn't mean that other cameras aren't good, especially for specific use cases. But as good as the FX9 is at everything? That's a much harder case to argue.
@@JeremiahBostwick Just saying I'v tried and tested both and I think even with all the bells and whistles the f55 image is way better than the fx9, at least for the work I do. If you're after a super clean image than ya fx9 will get you there, but the f55 is more more organic. I got a whole package with axs cards for around the same price as an fx9. Xcon LT is smaller than xavc so you can get 16bit raw up to 120fps 4k with a global shutter in a smaller package, it's pretty amazing. For wedding's and events ya fx9 is great, but looking at the type of stuff @markbone is filming, with fast motion and whip pans, there is no doubt the f55 w/R7 would look better.. in my opinion.
@@JeremiahBostwick I understand your points and agree, my point is to let people no there might be a better option to consider depending on the type of work they do. Not a lot of people talking about the f55 as it was a 30k camera that came out years ago.
I’m sure the BM 12K vs FX9 chatter is about to clog up this comment section, but they’re not the same sensor size and use case. I like my FX9 plenty and still get impressed every time I use it. FW 2.0 will be welcomed indeed, but so long as Sony stays on top of feature updates by listening to their customers, it will continue to evolve and get better. The 16-bit RAW update will be nice using the Shogun 7
@@Daniel_Sanchez_ I asked Atomos themselves when they would be able to handle 12-bit RAW over SDI like the Ninja V over HDMI. I'll admit that Atomos' tech support was basically not helpful at all. It took a lot of messaging back and forth and asking the most basic of questions with zero nuance to get a direct response. But the short answer is he told me that it will require Neon to get anything above 10-bit. I'm not saying that guy was right, because he wasn't exactly helpful. However even if the Shogun 7 does get 12-bit over SDI that is a HUGE difference from 16-bit (which definitely will require Neon or some future product). I'd recommend reading Alistair Chapman's comments on the subject. But the short answer is you likely won't notice any difference from 10-bit Log compressed vs 12-bit RAW linear. It was written specifically about FS5/FS7 RAW, but the principles are the same: www.xdcam-user.com/2017/08/the-pros-and-cons-of-12-bit-linear-raw-or-recording-raw-to-s-log/ If it will allow 12-bit RAW LOG then there will be a meaningful difference in terms of code values and what you'll be able to do with the grade. However true 14-bit or 16-bit linear RAW is an entirely different level in terms of latitude that 10-bit or 12-bit raw can't touch.

Great colours out of that camera but my question is what the heck is the name of this running doc?
Seeing you manually focus pulling with no gear attachment on a 50 1.2 makes me worried. Good job man! please keep making more video.
Living on the edge
The canon xl1 is still my favourite camera and still looks great! After that, maybe the gh4.
💯
Totally agree. This is a great camera!
Hi Mark! Good Job 👍
How do you expose your shots on fx9?
Shout out to Ontario from vegas if you ever want to collab I can show you around sin city! Great video brother! I got the fs5mkii and an a7riii
Great video! Beautiful Footage. Are you using a polarizer? Have you had any issues with using it with the variable ND?
Love it dude!!! 🤩
Mark, could you please tell me how did you get that ADIDAS/NIKE/APPLE commercial look for that video? I’m looking to get that color grading for so long to no avail. 😭 by the way, you’re killing it! 💯💯💯 ✌🏻 and ❤️
Did you have a chance to play with the 28-135mm f/4? I'll be curious to have you opinion. I got my hands on the FX9 last week, it really is a fantastic camera! Love your videos, thanks for sharing!
For now i’m shooting videos with a Fuji X-T3 and i’m pretty happy with it... and mostly use the Eterna simulation film on it ;)
I really like your style!
I’m interested to know how you deal with overlapping of roles like directing/ cinematography and what your take on this is. Like, how efficient is it to multitask and when is it maybe even of advantage/ or always a downside? Enjoying your videos!:)
What about Fuji xt4🙋
great video and the images coming off the FX9 are stunning! The whole Canon v Sony fan boy debate is funny, I loved the video by Tony Northrup comparing colour science and in a blind test involving 1,500 people the vast majority voted Sony as having the most pleasing colours and those voters included Canon, Nikon and Fuji fans boys ;)
Great work broh.
I REALLLYYYYY hope they put the S-Cinetone in the A7SIII !!!! It would be a really good stepup camera to the FX9 for many people. Plus the lenses would work on both cameras; no silly adapters
Great video Mark. Just heard you say your from Toronto. I live 45 min away and if you ever need a hand or someone to film bts let me know!
Hi Mark - if possible please could you list the kit around your fx9 - i.e. the handle, top plate and shoulder mount etc
Great stuff as always
You watch videos on 1.5x to 2x! You are my type of person 🙌🏻👌🏻
I found the Fs5 too flimsy, I dunno what the Fx6 will be like
Thanks. Really appreciate the reply.
No overheating. 240fps. Dynamic range
I just bought BMPCC4K and it's interesting coming from Sony, though I'm waiting for A7S3 or FX6 to return to Sony.
I agree, XAVC is fantastic! I also like Prores a lot though and getting Prores Raw through the Shogun 7 seems intriguing. Mark, will you be trying out that combo? Just curious.
Talking about cameras like talking about religions to some people...I hear you well:) greeting from another FX9 user also in GTA. Great video!
That camera looks awesome is it really expensive? And is AVCHD hard to edit with I have to convert it to MP4 to edit it what is your advice I have a Sony a5000 AMD I want to use AVCHD but it is hard to Figure out
Damn, I love your colours. I'm always struggling to get those blue tints there where they need to be, while maintaining a realistic look and feel.
Great work
Great piece. Can you go over your lenses you pair with the FX9?
Yes I would like to know this too.
nice review!
question: is there no microstutters while filming handheld?
Hey Mark,
I LOVED the " a true story?" film you did
was that shot with the fx9?
Fs7 last thing I shot on it!
Now I want an fx9! haha
Yo bud what's the arm you are using to manipulate your onboard monitor?
Great looking video. As a FX9 owner myself I was wondering what is your Slog3 experience on the sensor concerning overexposure. I did a lot of test and mostly shoot the camera rated as Iso 400/500 (in based 800 Iso). So basically not pushing the exposure as much as on a Fs7. But what's your experience. :)
that might work for 800 but I find the 4000 very noisy, you need to pump that ISO with lots of light
Why is there no flange back adjustment on the FX9?
Thanks
Hi pro bro please tell us does panasonic eva-1 12k resolve to the Netflix and does that camcorder has some issues with red light appear or something else and you really awesome we love the way you are god bless
Sorry no idea man
@@markbone thanks
Thanks for the update. Do you use the autofocus of the FX9 a lot for example in this sports shot? Or manual focus most of the time? Looks hard to nail focus when you are running around fast moving objects with that shallow dof!
A little mix of both.
Can you review the V-Raptor when it comes out?
Hey Mark would you recommend this for short film narrative? I really want the Arri Alexa film look...what do you think?
If you can’t afford alexa the fx9 is a GREAT alternative
@@markbone okay thank you ..love your videos very educational...keep em coming!
Is Sony FX9 still the best camera for documentaries? I'm a pro documentary maker and going to buy a new camera, are now in a camera research face, and feel a little lost...
Never heard of that auto ND feature VERY interesting, thanks. I am guessing this has 2 XLRs?
Yes, it has two XLRs
What do you think of the new BM 12K?
Shogun 7 caps at 10-bit. It will require Atomos’ new Neon system to do 16-bit RAW.
@@JeremiahBostwick It will get a firmware update once the FX9 update comes, and then you'll get a 12-bit RAW output via SDI on it!
It was written specifically about FS5/FS7 RAW, but the principles are the same: www.xdcam-user.com/2017/08/the-pros-and-cons-of-12-bit-linear-raw-or-recording-raw-to-s-log/
If it will allow 12-bit RAW LOG then there will be a meaningful difference in terms of code values and what you'll be able to do with the grade. However true 14-bit or 16-bit linear RAW is an entirely different level in terms of latitude that 10-bit or 12-bit raw can't touch.
great camera 🙌🏻
Are you using the Sigma Art 20mm with a matte box?
Hey Mark are you experiencing any of the 'green fringe'?
What EF adaptor are you using? Using autofocus?
Sigma and no
Hi Mr MB.
A suggestion for a future topic :-). So for those of us who are considering going from DSLR to "real" video cameras,
I would love to see some recommendations as to what to get from the pre owned marked, that might not be the latest teck but will keep up in 2020, and for a lot less money.
Your FS 9 footage looks amazing and I would love to jump on that boat! Unfortunately, being a hobby - pro dreamer video dude, At this time, I would not be able to spend that much on a camera, dope it may be, without filing for divorse at the same time :-D. I cant imagine that I am the only one in this situation, so just an idea. Thanx for taking the time making these vids! :-)
Right now, and FS5, or even a used FS7 may be a good transition camera for a dslr/mirrorless user trying to get into the proper video camera market
Zach Hunter yay! Great. Thanx;)
This is my dream camera, I feel like the a7siii will be the perfect B cam for it when it comes out, BTW do you need to convert any files after shooting to be able to use them in premiere?
