    For those of you watching this getting ready to travel to Oahu, iolani palace, it costs $20 for a full tour and it is INCREDIBLE! Worth every dollar you will walk away feeling so much aloha spirit and appreciating the culture of Hawaii so much more

      @@johanssonfilms 21:52 What's the spot that bans pictures? I don't like pictures (notice I cropped off my head in my avatar, that's not an accident) and the only thing I won't enjoy is so many people taking pics. (Although we can wear our masks indoors because of Covid)
      Thanks again for these great ways to save money!

    Big surprises coming to Oahu for the first time coming from CA:
    -people riding motos w/o helmets
    -police vehicles that leave their blue lights on
    -strict covid passport checks in restaurants
    -people actually wearing masks
    -huge homelessness , third world country life outside of the fancy resorts
    -tourist traps (expect to pay admission for a bunch of stuff), expensive food, etc

    So a few things I learned Is that the island has a whole #vanlife community. I wanted to add that if you rent a car you can also rent a camper van and have all what you need go with you from kitchen to wheels. It's perfect for people who like to get up and go. Or wish those rare sunsets and sun rises. Another tip a place I found to eat at is a Chinese restraunt called Number 1 It's an awesome place and they have the best breakfast bowls for only 3 bucks USD. Also 7/11 is amazing they have these machines that makes fresh smoothies and shakes. Love love love them. That's all I got so far. Great video and thanks so much for all the tips. :)

    • @johanssonfilms
      @johanssonfilms  5 років тому +1

      Wicked thank you for the incredible tips! We saw that there was a ton of vans for rent, but we figured it would be too pricey cause then you have to pay for the camp site on top of that too? Or did you manage to find free van camping?

    I'm so jealous right now😞 I lived in Kailua 3 yrs & you've seen more of island than I have! We had a great life there thou our house was a 2.5 million dollar house 576 Kaimalio Drive $1700 per month. Unreal panoramic windows throughout the part of house that faced Ocean. Was extremely loud with ocean WAVES lol 😆 lovely noise I miss dearly. Basically where we lived was so awesome we felt on vacation everyday, so we didn't feel need to "explore" (thou we did a little). I'm so happy you documented so well😊 THANK YOU

    Re: "no backpacks" I think it is either for security reasons, or because they may have had too many tourists and homeless people coming on board with backpacks, which take up a lot of room. During rush hour, that would really be a problem. Also, lugging them on board, and off again, takes up more time. Speaking of which, is "island time" similar to "Brazilian time"?

    Malaekahana Beach Campground (not the state park/campground) has the best prices and a lovely beach. Their top shelf Hale Suit cabins are primitive, have a toilet, and bunk style and platform beds. $117 per night for 4 people. You bring everything you need.. sheets, TP etc.. Outdoor showers. Wonderful grounds. Then the prices go down from there. Hales don't have toilets, but the restrooms are easy to get to. Then you have actual camp sites for vehicles and tents. The beach is "right there".

    beach ceremony free . Of course they had a photographer , we purchased pictures they are beautiful. We spent one night
    the other 8 days another hotel.The Royal Hawaiian Center have free hula shows there. We had breakfast at IHop got discount just show room key. There are Restaurants for breakfast one person eat free pick up magazines on street. Had
    subway, Arbys, Moose Mccuddys have specials on diffrent days . We had micro/fridge in room for dinner we purchased
    food at Sams & FoodLand. We did a grand circle island tour for $60.01 transportation included from 8am-5p.m.
    We were suppose to be in Hawaii this year Virus stopped that so we rescheduled for next year.

    Do you need a visa to do work away or the other “free” accommodations options?

    • @johanssonfilms
      @johanssonfilms  5 років тому +1

      No you don't, since you aren't actually exchanging any money. It can be a bit of a grey area. For example the US probably could have denied us entry if they felt like we were working and not volunteering

    I'm curious - does Oahu not have much of the rat-lung disease that the snails spread? When you popped that fruit in your mouth straight from the tree I had a knee-jerk "NO" moment haha. Over on the Big Island everyone will tell you to scrub/wash your fruit to avoid getting the illness

    Awesome video, was it hard to find availability in the hostels? And what was the name of the one you stayed?

    • @johanssonfilms
      @johanssonfilms  5 років тому +1

      Yeah you'll definitely want to book a decent amount of time before your trip. The hostels book up pretty fast. There were lots of airbnbs as a backup plan though. We stayed at the Waikiki Beach Boutique hostel

    What was the name of the hike where you can swim near the waterfall? Going in September and would love to include that in my itinerary. Thanks!

      When coming back to the Waikiki side from the windward side on the Pali Pali Highway there's a place to pull over that overlooks a huge Chinese graveyard... walk back up the hill a little bit you'll see a trail that leads to a lagoon that's fed by a waterfall with a 40 ft cliff dive..... most beautiful place on the island I'm told it's been featured in some movies. This is not a hike you'll know you're there what's in 3 minutes.

    Do they not have uber and lyft on the island? Ir is it super expensive there?

    • @happychefx

      They have both in the islands and it isn't anymore expensive. They also have a VERY robust bus system that is the best option if you have the time.
