The Super Mario Bros. Movie was *this* close to being the highest-grossing film of last year. THIS. FUCKING. CLOSE. And then came this movie and people would rather see this sorry excuse of a Barbie movie (STOP HATING THIS VIDEO AND DEFENDING THIS MOVIE, YOU DISNEY SHILLS WHO THINK “WHITE FEMINISM” IS BETTER THAN REAL FEMINISM WHERE REGARDLESS OF THE COLOUR AND GENDER, EVERYONE IS TREATED LIKE EQUALS INSTEAD OF SOLELY WHITE WOMEN!!!!!!!!!) so that they could make fun of TSMBM losing to… THIS!!!!!! (and a few other movies for that matter, even one or a couple animated movies. It lost to at least one of the Frozen movies (TSMBM on its own, for as amazing as its success is, is only this much more successful than Frozen 1, yet opening weekends aside, more people would rather see another Frozen movie and anticipate more Frozen sequels than Illumination’s Mario movie sequels, but what if TSMBM2 is the highest-grossing animated… or general… movie in the late 2020s and Frozen 3 & 4 surprise the world by making less than, say, half a billion on a 2 hundred million dollar or more budget?) and The Lion King, which wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t the 2019 version (and its upcoming prequel that will lose to Sonic 3) because I’m sick and tired of people talking shit about the Disney Renaissance films just to make the remakes look better despite having all the more political (in)correctness, visuals that replace beautiful and lively hand-drawn with CGI that is supposed to look more realistic but also looks faker and less originality, but I just know that making failure after failure after failure, because of the sheer likeliness of Mufasa: The Lion King making under three hundred million dollars at the box office, if the Lion King remake were made in the 2020s, it would also make this little money or less)
Nutsa if you ever need someone to eat you like an ice cream cone, i know the man for the job. It might be Ryam Gosling. But if it isn't, don't be disappointed 😥
@kieranstark7213 also wtf are you talking about dude? The Lion King Remake and Frozen have literally nothing to do with last year's movies. TSMB is dogshit btw. Also it is the second highest grossing animated film of all time. Frozen anf Frozen 2 never came close to TSMB and none of the films you mentioned EVEN CAME OUT IN THE LAST4 YEARS LET ALONE 2023
This video is different than your previous ones. Not sure what specifically changed, but something did. It's still good, but I think I prefered your earlier work.
Reminds me of what Mr. Incredible said in the first incredibles movie: "They keep creating new ways to celebrate mediocrity but if somebody's genuinely special-"
also in the first Incredibles movie, his son responds to “Everyone’s special in their own way” with “that’s just another way to say nobody is”, one of my favorite lines
I don't remember who said it but I read once that this movie is the epitome of "Plastic Feminism". Any societal issues this movie attempts to explore is just superficial and the portrayal of feminist values are glossed over as to not risk damaging the brand.
That was "verilybitchie", saw the same video you did (The Plastic Feminism of Barbie) And yea the movie more than anything.... _aestheticizes_ feminism if we're bein generous haha. Only bothers to have the most surface level resemblance to actual feminism _or_ how it relates to barbie
@@ExpertContrarian Honestly there was as much unintentional misogyny as there was parodical misandry, but I may be steppin on ur toes given ur username >w
There could have been so much potential with its aesthetic. It could have been comedic with romance and room for another sequel even. It honestly is a dark movie with some weird agenda behind it. It really let me down for everything it could have been and even the training of the actors where meant to look at movies that where totally different then the whole “message” of this movie… like why did they waste their time…
@@thtswutshesaid if every movie made fails to meet your supposed ''minimum standards'', then it's probably not minimum standards. That is exactly how it works.
I feel like Pirates of the Caribbean is the gold standard for making a fun and engaging script with basically zero source material. Nobody really had high expectations going in and had those expectations shattered at the theater. What's notable is the development for that script began in the early 90s and was a passion project. You can't just say "we're gonna make a movie about X property, write me a script" and expect gold, and that's exactly what Mattel did. Disney executives had to be convinced by their writers to make the pirates movie.
Didn't it start as a "Curse of Monkey Island" adaption? A cult classic "point and click" adventure game series for the PC about silly pirates. But the licensing fell through so they just grabbed something else pirate-themed, a freaking Disneyland ride, and rolled with it. And struck absolute gold. Still, it's not as though there was no source material... at the very least, the basic inspiration was an amazingly charming game that didn't get a quarter of the recognition it deserved, but I'm not sure how much of that original inspiration made it into the final movie. I can easily see a morph from the "Zombie Pirate LeChuck" to the cursed ghost crew of the Black Pearl, but Johnny Depp takes all the credit for the zanny charisma of Captain Jack Sparrow: it was entirely his idea to channel Keith Richards for the role. Still, the "spirit" of the movie very much had a source beyond just a theme park attraction.
@@KarolOfGutovo Not supposedly, factually and provably. You really didnt know that? Unusal, I thought that was basically common knowledge. Well, now we both know more i guess ey?^^
The movie itself was fine, but the fact that people are arguing that it was snuffed from any Oscar aside from set design is kinda telling how low our standards have gotten.
Did you fall asleep during it? IT WAS NOT FINE!! sheesh. I was so angry leaving the theatre. "THIS is what I just spent an obscene amount of money on? AND MY TIME??" I kept waiting for it to be better at some point, and it never was. The cringe levels were on red since the beginning of the movie and then I got also very angry as it ran it's time. And WTF was the ending about?!?! Calling it mediocre or fine is being very nice.
@@ThatWeirdFinn Good point in the video is that a lot of audience reaction is dependent on expectation. I'm kinda there with op, I went in with very low expectations and came out with little by way of disappointment >w< But I didn't watch it in theaters, it wasn't playing yet in my theater and I only really see movies with friends
I agree. I told one of my friends that I didn't care much for it, and he told me I'd missed the point. I said I understand existential crises (I have them every ten minutes). I understand the often contradictory expectations placed on a woman and how you can't really meet them. I understand that the Barbie world, where the Kens were essentially treated as accessories (like women are, especially to wealthy men, in the real world) was not a "better" version of the real world. I understand the need to find yourself. And with all that content, the movie managed to make me feel absolutely nothing about any of it lol. The execution was very meh. They had a lot to say and didn't say any of it well. But if I say that, I'm a "woman-hater." Correction: I hate everyone equally.
It's more so the investors and studios want a recognisable IP rather than something original. The writers would love to create original works, but to get the funding they basically have to do an in name only adaptation of an IP because that's all that gets greenlit. Like the Velma series was originally just a passion project Mindy Kahling wanted to make but it had to get tied to the Scooby Doo brand to get off the ground
Or the 4th season of True Detective. It should not have been a 4th season but a stand alone series about 2 women detectives in Alaska. Like "the frontier" or any Norwegian detective.
i liked the part where they obsess over there not being any women in charge of Mattel MEANWHILE IN THE REAL WORLD there are 5 women on the board of directors of Mattel (just about half) so their satire doesn't even work and actively lies to gullible feminists.
Barbie as a character was underwritten. It was like the movie tried everything in its power to NOT make this a movie about Barbie. They added dozens of extra "Barbies" and a variety of Kens and other side characters to take the focus off of Barbie being the main character. She was supposed to be "Stereotypical Barbie", but this wan't really explained or explored. Why was she "stereotypical"? Where was her backstory? The whole thing was too focused on having a message of some sort and having pretty sets and costumes, while neglecting to actually have a story with some kind of substance or character development.
She was stereotypical Barbie because she wasn’t the President, she wasn’t a scientist, she wasn’t part of the Supreme Court justice, she can’t fly a plane, she doesn’t even have a job, she’s just the Pretty Barbie, hence why she told Ruth Handler she wanted to be apart of the world that makes things and not the thing that’s made. All of this was explained in the movie when Stereotypical Barbie had her breakdown 🙄
I had that problem too Margot Robbie’s character basically disappears from the movie in like the third quarter and is mostly replaced by America Ferreras character. I know she’s Stereotypical Barbie’s former owner but it’s confusing particularly due to the world building that went into the film(or lack thereof)
They didnt want to mke her flawed or incomplete, as that would make her 'look bad' So instead she is perfect and flawless, and now can't learn or improve from her experiences. Which is typically what makes us love n relate to characters! This is pride n arrogance. To display their hero as less than perfect hurts their egos, because really they are writing about themselves. Look at Tony Stark. He was flawed n damaged at the beginning of the story and couldnt empathize with others, and went on a journey to change n transform into someone who sacrifices himself for others. We loved him at both stages. This is basic character design. 😂😂
When I left the theater I felt so off about this movie. It just... was so unsatisfying but I couldn't put my finger on it. Thank you for putting that feeling into words
Same here! I felt like it didn’t impact me as it should’ve and I walked out feeling like…”huh…?” Like, what was the main message again? The takeaway? The story? What happened to Barbie? I REALLY wanted a Legally Blonde-esque movie, just lighthearted with a kind message of embracing femininity and empowerment as well as unity between both genders. But….it just felt very superficial and most of the “feminist dialogues” just made me cringe. When that girl said “fascist..” I cringed inside, this felt more like a twitter argument then a genuine, fun movie of the year about Barbie.
Yeah, the way the film ended was weird, so basically she leaves Barbieland, has a heart to heart with her creator, decides to stay in the real world with the girl and the mom, and the first thing she does is...go to a gynaecologist? And then BOOM! The end! Barbie Girl remix plays! And images of Barbie and Ken dolls (and Alan) flash across the screen while credits roll. I was like "What? That's it? That's how the movie ends? Well, that felt rather anti-climatic!" I guess maybe it's supposed to be anti-climatic, because it's funny, but...i don't know, dudes.
I was 100% fooled by the marketing, by all the promotionial stunts. On opening day I wore pink, dragged everyone I knew in theaters to watch what I thought was gonna be the new mean girls, the new legally blonde. I was excited for all the quotes, all the costumes, everything. The intro with the gigantic barbie was great and it got me so excited, but thats where the film peaks for me. The first scene at the beach I was in my seat thinking how the dialogue is just off, everything seemed forced, and the "jokes" just weren't funny. Afterwards I came home and my mom asked me "Did you like it" and all I could say was "No" and I sat in my room to process all my disappointment
I really wanted them to stop trying to make beach a thing, it wasn't going to be a thing. When Ken started his song I got up to waz and buy a whole nother drink and returned to my seat for him to still be singing the same song. Jokes aside, there were lots of moments where this movie felt like the directors clocked in and went "I know what this movie is- it's the lego movie!" and the next day "I know what this movie is! It's Mean Girls!" I've lost track of the plots it accidentally "ripped off" when I got to Tinker Bell and a Twice song. I'm very sad that the movie was so scared to have an identity it hid behind an aesthetic. I know that "(blank) That Built America" show is propagandist and sensational, and it's very much something I guilty-pleasure watch with my laptop out in case I need to fact check them, but it's SO much easier to root for Barbie in the episode about her product development going head to head against GI Goe than it is with the Barbie Movie. Here's to the amazing outfits everyone wore to Barbie and to the real humans in the clothing, and once we clink our glasses let me dump my drink on this films DVD box set lol
Barbie is such a strange experience. I can't say in good faith that I didn't enjoy it, because I did, it was a wild ride in the theater and a very entertaining investment of both time and money, although not the kind of entertainment I expected with everyone praising the movie. To its credit, it has a very unique aesthetic that helps tremendously with landing jokes, I genuinely laughed more than once during screentime. That being said, it's the kind of movie I won't see twice, it's a very effective flashbang but once the flash subsides, you get to see what was hidden behind... and the more you think about it, the more it falls apart, Mattel being the most egregious example. It serves no purpose other than making slapstick jokes at the expense of world consistency, that entire section was just awful really.
Upon retrospect I realized that I loved the first half of the movie in Barbieland, the scene with the old lady, I'm just Ken and the soundtrack overall. That's about it. I still belt out "what was I made for" it's a gorgeous song, and the montage it plays over COULD have been really powerful if literally ANYTHING in this movie prior to it lead up to it. But in reality, Barbie's decision to become human comes right out of nowhere. She had maybe one or two nice moments in the real world. If we're being generous. A shame really. I still love Barbie dolls, though.
that speech given by the mother at the end pissed me off. like putting aside my thoughts on the contents of the speech, if you're going to have a character give a speech like that.... it is basic storytelling logic to have shown them experiencing/dealing with these issues beforehand. otherwise it comes across like they're extremely privileged and complaining about problems they don't have. it would have 100% made more sense for barbie (the only one we see actually experience sexism in the story) to have made that speech right before she decides she definitely doesn't want to go and be a human. adios. humanity sucks.
that speech was awful. i've seen it be praised as groundbreaking so many times but america literally says pretty much the same thing word for word in a throw-away scene in her show superstore eight years prior. it just felt cheap and recycled.
@@promisemochi the speech really didn’t work for me (especially bc even tho im a woman i couldnt actually relate to it-i know a lot of women will, but not me). it’s definitely not groundbreaking to say any of the things she said. thats a message that has been said by a billion different people in a billion different stories and all of those were better written than this one. like you said, it’s recycled. and a feminist speech does not make for a good film or good characters. those are infinitely more important to me than any political message
@@shhimreading906I think the reason why women relate to the speech is bc it validates there feelings about some struggle they go through even though it wouldn’t really be a big deal since people have shitty lives in general, feminists love to push this idea of “invisible women” when male disposability existed for many years where a woman’s life has more value, men struggle being bread winners providing for there family etc but hey it’s a chick flick movie with cringe monologue
@@Femmeaesthetic i do understand why people relate to it. it lists a lot of things a lot of women go through (not me personally, but ik plenty of women who have). it’s a speech that’s supposed to invoke a superficial feeling of relation without doing the narrative or character work to back itself up or make any genuinely insightful social commentary. it doesn’t seek to do anything but appeal to people who already agree with that point of view. the entire film feels like it has such a surface-level understanding of gender inequality. the whole film it felt like i was being lectured with the same points over and over again in the least subtle way possible “all men bad, do assault, oppress. women best in world.” which is just a lie because there are positives and negatives that come with being either gender.
This film feels like Greta trying to be a copycat of Rian Johnson: wants to have this preachy story about X social issue, but then simultaneously attempt to evade criticism by having several characters say "shut up and don't think about it".
I feel like she is more concerned with feeling a personal emotional catharsis, primarily for herself but also for the audience, than actually exploring the complexity of the themes that matter to barbie. i want to know why she has to abandon pink and look like a 2013 buzzfeed employee at the end. i felt so offended lol
Or the two of them just really want to do something ambitious but they don’t know what They seemingly end up making up the movies plot as they are filming the damn thing. I dont dislike either of them as filmmakers generally but I’m basically describing Barbie and The Last Jedi It’s obvious as a mushroom cloud they want to do something ambitious but don’t know what, as I mentioned before. They are given the task of a modern installment of a classic franchise and they feel the need to do something unexpected with the main character but not only are they confused but they’re not considering how it effects these characters in the long run. Why would Luke Skywalker toss the same lightsaber his father wielded, the same object he lost with his right hand seconds before discovering his fathers identity.
@@something-from-elsewhereyou know a director I think is quite a feminist but gets no credit for it? Tim Burton, his whole career he’s been making movies where he gave tortured introverted female characters the spotlight and a decent development and turned them into girlbosses by the end, Lydia from “BeatleJuice”, Selina/CatWoman from “BatMan Returns”, Sally from “The Nightmare Before Christmas”, Alice from “Alice in Wonderland”, Angelique from “Dark Shadows”, Margaret from “Big Eyes”, etc
My ex friends said I was acting like i was better than them and that I was a snob because I didn't like barbie and prefered oppenheimer. They proceeded to call me a misogynist 🤡
There was a trend on, I think, Instagram where people judged ones romantic interest based on whether they like the Barbie movie To be honest I was disappointed with both movies, Oppenheimer particularly. It just lacked an encompassing theme/focus but it kept setting so many different ones up and then abandoning them
Writers reward fake Barbie fans by having Barbie take her creator's surname when she already has a full name in lore- BARBARA MILLICENT ROBERTS. Broke my immersion. Horrid, squalid, insulting.
The way they ignored the lore really irked me. Not only did they ignore her name, but all her friends and family over the years: Stacy, Kelly/Chelsea, her parents, Teresa, Christie, Raquelle, Kira, Becky etc. The movie should have been a love letter to Barbie as a pop culture icon, and they just didn't do that
It drives me nuts how worshipped this movie is. And I 100% believe it was thanks to the marketing and memes. People think this movie is a cultural milestone empowering women thanks to the marketing and it's popularity. But it really is badly written, and people just can't see it? It really could've been a good, fun movie. It had potential to be a lot lighthearted and funny. I think it could've been improved a lot if they added 1-2 more songs and pushed the comedy further, because those parts of the movie had sooo much potential. Kens were funny, Barbieland was great, and the dancing was fantastic. The problem was the fact that they decided to make it preachy, instead of trying to make a traditional story with a concrete idea. Instead of embracing the FUN of Barbie. I honestly think the early 2000's content for girls had it right. They knew back then how to make good shows/movies for girls that were feminist, relatable, wholesome, and just simply fun. Series that come to mind are Totally Spies, Winx, H2O Just Add Water, or WITCH for example. Barbie could've been something like that, but the director clearly did not have that intention. It was ruined by online activism, bad writing, and cynicism.
Yeah I hate the amount of credit this movie gets, kinda feels like endgame again where people think it’s a masterpiece when literally plot was rushed, I hope more people will be critical of this movie bc this film is defo not a masterpiece
@@Femmeaesthetic I really didn't like it when I saw it in theatres, but I watched it the second time with my mom while we were decorating our apartment for Christmas and I liked it a bit more. Perhaps its not a bad background movie, and if you don't fully pay attention to it lol.
People dont think this is a cultural milestone empowering women at all... Most people simply thought it was very amusing. And if others don't think it is bad, it doesn't mean they ''can't see it''. That sounds like a fairly self-centered view. Totally spies and winx (and maybe the other stuff too) are for young children... This movie clearly is not.

It's also important to note that the Barbie movie push the narrative that Barbie was the first ever fashion doll to exist which is bullcrap. Madam Alexander has existed since the 1920's and her company made the first America fashion doll, Cissy, 5 years before Barbie debuted.
@@FrenkieWest32Opening line talked about how they were only baby dolls and girls could only be mothers. Which yes could be a joke, but the company itself says this too, saying that girls only had no dolls they could dress up in fashionable clothes only paper dolls or baby dolls. There's a really good vidoe M.J. Tanner that talks about the matter and shares a few more companies, founded by women, who made fashion dolls.
@@norabeth1951 yes, in a story where barbieland is an alternate dimension with barbies that are linked spiritually to humans playing with barbie dolls... It's fiction, not a documentary on the history of dolls.
I would just like to say as a male (who is not overly attached to Barbie as a brand) Barbie and the Nutcracker is GOATed and I won’t accept any slander of it.
As a male I'd like to say that 99% of my love for Tchaikovsky's amazing music writing comes from watching the early 2000s Barbie movies with my little cousin
Now it makes more sense why they released it at the same time as Oppenheimer. It wasn’t simply because they wanted to punish the director, but rather the dichotomy of both films releasing at the same time was the only way they could get their money back! lol
2:41 This happens with games, and I find the time is about 4-6 months. It’s enough time beyond the “hype bubble” that people can levy critiques without backlash. Because it’s not just “hope” for a good product on its own that the hype bubble brings. It’s that it becomes a “water cooler moment” filled with “positivity” for people that have nothing else to talk about. So they get way too attached to these types of media to talk with people. They have nothing going on with themselves.

That mom speech near the end of the movie was handled with all the subtlety of a 2014 tumblr post. It's the worst part of the movie, and it comes immediately after the best part, which is the mom comforting barbie and talking to her about her insecurities. "It breaks my heart that you think youre not good enough" really touched my heart because my parents have said similar things to me. But then it immediately delves into incessant whining instead of adressing where these issues come from-inside. It's crazy how the end of the movie is about Barbie wanting to become human, but the movie explores NOTHING about the human experience other than that one 40-second montage 30 minutes in. Nothing about actual feelings of grief, loss, the joys of motherhood or connection, growing up, etc. Barbie has the exact same attitude at the end of the movie as the beginning, except now she has to visit the gynecologist. Woop de doo such a satisfying ending.
Honestly I feel like Margot Robbie never really wanted to be the focus of this movie, especially with her move towards production. It felt like most people did it for the paycheck and nothing more, but Ryan had a certain passion about his role that made him stand out.
She wanted someone else to do it apparently, like Gal Gadot (😒). But it's a hard role to cast and she was probably the most obvious choice in Hollywood (which is ironic as she still doesn't look *that* much like Barbie lol).
"Barbie had such rich storytelling potential. But NO... MEN." 🤣🤣 Nutsa and Critical Drinker are the only film critics I watch. I think I've disagreed with them on a film maybe one time. This channel deserves 100x the attention.
What the film proposes as an answer to modern male/female relations is that the two sexes should just be atomized from each other, and that's no surprise when he whole film is a visualization of the feminist argument against the Genesis story. Many hate the fact that Eve was made out of Adam's side (not his rib), as if that meant she was lesser than him because her creation was dependent on his', but that's not the point. The reason Eve is made out of Adam's side is to show how we as human beings are relational creatures by nature--both of us (but women especially). We are both interdependent of each other. You can literally not explain one sex without the other. That's the point. But in a society that values autonomy and hyper-individuality above anything else, interdependence seems like a threat. Hence, there's no Barbie and Ken working together to solve their world's problems. There's no Barbie and Ken, period. The film could only propose "it's Barbie and it's Ken." Its answer is that men and women have to learn to separate themselves from one another to reach self-actualization, which is such a bummer. It could have actually been so much more.
this idea of "you have to find yourself" pretty much came from feminists, it's very obvious they hate Adam and Eve working togather since these radicals intention is to segregate the opposite sex, ken didn't need to "find himself" the only thing he wanted was a basic level of respect from Barbie, the same people who say "ken is just an accessory" are the same people who say "Ken needs to find himself to get out of Barbie's shadows" people defending this movie just gets worse and worse. Ken is meant to be a supporting character for barbie & barbie has that appreciation from him which this movie destroys the healthy relationship between these two characters. *not to mention ken dolls did have occupation*
Well, yes. Both men and women relate to each other. It is impossible to look at the male body or the female body and try to understand it by itself. It is only in relation to the other that it becomes clear. And that says something really beautiful about humanity as a whole: there is no "default" human body. There is no default human. Instead, there are two kinds who are made for relationship by nature. No human can withstand social isolation for long periods of time. It is just the case that women are especially relational. We can see an example of this clearly in a woman's reproductive system. Unlike a man who (biologically) has a very minimal and detached role in procreation (He only offers his sperm. The rest of the process takes place entirely within the woman), the woman is involved in the creation and her relationship with the child intimately at every step. Many women who have given birth describe feelings of this relationship being so deep that they cannot visualize themselves apart from their child. They feel like their lives are intrinsically connected to them, even after gestation.

Your part on how people collectively turn on initially well liked movies over time is similar to how we all look back at objectively bad fashions we wore, but don't know why. This video essay is good. I haven't watched the whole Barbie or any Lego movie, but just seeing a comparison of how each franchise is handled from a world building perspective makes me sad. Barbie could of been so much more meaningful to Barbie fans.
i know you're a bit late to the party as far as talking about barbie, but i'm once again blown away by how much effort was put into the editing. i love your editing style. please take your time and i'll be excited whenever you're next project is ready to release!
The thing about her not feeling like Barbie anymore and wanting to live in the human world is handled so poorly. Especially considering the point was that her issues start because of the mother's feelings. Instead of romanticising the real world and have her wish to be there for no reason when she knows nothing about it and they didn't even explore it, they could've made a point of her not being able to stay as just Barbie now that she's seen the real world. Maybe she would need to find someone else to play with her but even if she tries to stay and enjoy her ideal doll world she's conscious now, she knows how things are not as perfect in the real world and more importantly she's learned the own damage her doll has made too (taking the point about the physical image you mentioned which was such a wasted opportunity). She could've used THAT as her motivation. Yes, she doesn't KNOW anything about the real world but she wants to, because she would rather come back to Barbieland to make it better but that's why first she needs to go and experience the real world and learn about it.
I don't know how empowering a story about Barbie's creator would be since, yes, she was the first woman on Mattel's board but she was also fired and was guilty of conspiracy and mail fraud to manipulate Mattel's stock price.
What most people miss about 'Barbie' the character, is that she is not a real human, nobody can be her cause she is not real, she is a doll. She really isn't a feminist icon but a female icon She is not here to command a girl power break of molds movement and all that jazz, she is here to sell an escapism, cause she is a toy, a girly toy! Like guys?? Let's not forget she is still the very spoiled daughter of a multimillionaire company! she is not a relatable girl with everyday problems, she is not. But that doesn't mean she is something bad. 'Barbie is everything you want to be' yeah! Cause she is a doll! She is a toy! She is an entreteniner, a medium you can escape to a perfect little pink fantasy A piece of plastic is NOT responsable to educate your children. Barbie has little to no voice on telling your daughter or son how a woman should be or act or even dress. And that same multimillionaire company is not either! Can we agree on that?? (I'm pretty sure they care more about sales!) Barbie is a nice, pretty, talented, and forever young woman. Likes to have fun with her friends and family and put on cute clothes. She is rich and popular but also kind and smart! She can trully be anything she wants cause she is just that cool! And like, thats it! There is no further depht to her character cause it doesn't have to be! As a toy she is a blank canvas you can fill any way you want! So just have fun with her! That's all In conclusion, just go watch Barbie life in the Dreamhouse. (Also I just found hilarious how the movie states a 'normal down to earth Barbie' would be a great idea when a doll like that literally got produced once and it was a total faliure. Girls want fairy mermaid princesses in sparkly shiny gownds guys, stop saying they don't)
Ken understands the intrincacies of "freedom" and grows as a person, the Barbie World under "masculine rule" prospers before the Kens are psychologically manipulated into fighting each other by entitled women (Barbies) and the status quo is restored and finally Barbie and Ken recognize they need each other to actually thrive (nuclear family). I said it before and I'll say it again: Barbie may be the most hilarious (unintentional) parody I've ever seen.
Interpreting them as prospering under Ken is a stretch, in my opinion. It was just the other extreme. Following another status quo without actually knowing why or if it is actually what they want.
Right for all but the last point. Hollywood could never. Ken and Barbie don't realize that they need each other, but that they can only thrive atomized from each other. In other words, "It's Barbie and it's Ken." She point blank tells him he needs to be Ken without her.
I enjoyed Barbie but it wasn't the "best movie ever made" like people kept saying it was. The real spectacle of the movie was the marketing for it and like honestly cultural reset, pink was everywhere, never seen so many people so excited to dress up for a movie in all pink!! And the premier outfits that Margot wore were amazing, the all girls Mariachi band in pink for the Mexico premier made me tear up, it was real sweet. But the movie itself was just a movie. Not the worst movie ever but no where near the best. It also felt like a slap in the face to all the women who went all out in pink ready to see Barbie show that being cute a feminine doesn't make you any less intelligent, only for her to become a sad beige Barbie at the end. If you wanna watch a better version of the Barbie movie, just watch Enchanted and Legally Blonde back to back.
@txwtw I think it is a better portrayal of the fish out of water story where Giselle really gets to explore the real world and fall in love with it, the good, the bad. She learns new emotions that she never had before and concepts she hasn't heard of and we actually really understand why she wants to change worlds. Barbie was fun but the real world seems to be told to her rather than experienced by her. She gets told how women feel and how men act. She's only in the real world for a little while before she has to go back to Barbieland to reset everything and in that short time it's hard to imagine she was given a genuine valid reason to want to go back. Giselle truly falls in love with the new world while Barbie seems to want to leave just because she can
found out about you through EFAP, as one of the best guests, and now I get exited whenever you upload. Great work. The editing, script, jokes make these videos so enjoyable and well made. Thank you Nutsa for the great content
Great Analysis. This might be ny favorite essay on this channel. Thanks for critizcizing the whole movie without using the word "WOKE", wichtends to be cheap and doesn't adresses the deep problems the movie and the script really have.
This video is my introduction to your channel. Your writing, delivery and editing are just brilliant!! And also the comedic timing. I was laughing so hard about the Bibble photos and the commentary on top of them! Your script for this video was way more entertaining, enjoyable and thought-provoking than the Barbie movie.
THANK YOU NUTSA for fuck sakes, I’ve been saying ever since this movie came out that the speech was lazy and over played simple. Barbie discovering for herself what woman have to go through rather than somebody informing her would have been a way more satisfying payoff.
I saw a comment on another video about this saying how the strong reaction to this movie really showed where most of the public still is in their understanding of feminism, and it's largely the introductory stage. I can see how this story, and that speech (which gave me zero feels) would be revelatory to someone raised within very rigid traditional Western gender roles and isolated from most modern discourse. I do know people like that and have watched them have some of these first realizations. But this movie still isn't the amazing experience it was hyped to be. Its message was muddy, it's writing bland, and it treated the audience like we're dumber than the average cow.
I hate telling people that I didn't really like this movie that much. Happy that from now on I can just link them to this video. Hoping that UA-cam will leave you alone with no claims 🙌
I think That Star Wars girl channel pointed out something that most channels who criticized this movie aren’t pointing out (probs bc they don’t know). This movie is portraying this idea that kens are homeless & don’t have jobs but in actual reality of Barbie universe when look at ads, toys, animated movies/tv shows kens did have occupation. I remember Ken being a groomer, merman, cowboy, surfer etc but obviously this would destroy the narrative of the story. If Mattel really wanted a film director coming from “female perspective” they could’ve hired any female director who knew the source material because Greta herself admitted she didn’t know & did not grew up with Barbie but she was obviously hired because she’s a feminist filmmaker who’s well known for indie films like lady bird and little women, now she’s going to be a screen writer for Snow White remake. In actual reality Mattel had 40% of CEO’s but again it would destroy the narrative of the story. The moms monologue was all over the place, I could not relate to this speech, never in my life I felt embarrassed in the theaters!!! But overall the only thing good coming out of Barbie is the aesthetics, costume, setting, some background music and obviously Ken
@@worthybutter2004bc she’s a feminist filmmaker famously known for indie movies, that’s all you need to know. Hollywood is a huge industry, could’ve hired any female director who knew the source material
I was obssed with this movie for 2 weeks after seeing it because I shared almost ALL of your thoughts on it, AND NO ONE ELSE WAS BRINGING THEM UP. EVERYONE WAS ACTUALLY PRAISING THE MOVIE. I have no connection to the Barbie brand, but the way people and reviews were talking about made me excited for a funny SMART movie like the Lego Movie as well. It was excrutiating to feel so strongly about the movie everyone was loving, but I was sure that with time people would re-examine it and see all I have seen. I remembered your channel and was incredibly excited to hear your take on it, and you delivered. It feels so satisfying to be validated like this lol. And also seeing someone who doesnt start assuming I am a misoginist because I hated the movie.
In a parallel universe they got halfway through shooting this movie and realized, ‘Everything we’re doing with Ken is just funnier and more coherent. Let’s just stop and make that movie instead.’ And that would have probably been an all-time classic comedy.
Im subbing bc I can see you are a genuine Barbie fan with the Barbie diaries theming (a movie I swear I never hear anyone talk about) aaand the Barbie magic of the Pegasus jokes that I died at. Haven’t checked out your channel yet at the time of writing so crossing fingers you got commentary on those.
I saw barbie with a roommate in theaters and it was fine, but my mind went to the good place as it felt it tackled a lot of the themes barbie wanted to a lot better.
this is what happens when ppl who aren't barbie fans make a movie about barbie LMAO Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie admitted that they weren't really that into barbie growing up
One of my main issues with the movie is that it’s so focused on career Barbies that it forgets to elaborate on the imaginative play type Barbies. It takes away creative juices from the worldbuilding and makes it so bland….like a plastic matriarchy instead of a fantasyland. Where are the fairy and princess Barbies? We see like three mermaid background Barbies. What about wizard and witch Barbies? What about super spy Barbie?
Usually i listen to long videos while doing something else. However, with your video i actually watched and was very focused. I'm really impressed with your work, it has humour, great attitude, and fun editing. Keep it up
I’m so glad people are finally voicing their dissatisfaction for this movie. I was so excited for this film. I thought it was going to be like a live action Life in the Dreamhouse. I watched it at home as soon as it came out and I couldn’t even sit through it all. This was not a Barbie movie, this was not even a family movie. I just wanted to have a fun time not be lectured on how the patriarchy has oppressed women. The internet’s reaction to this movie actually gaslit me into thinking we watched different movies. I’m so glad I’m not actually going insane and that I’m not the only one who thinks this. (Also the film feels so hostile towards the Barbie brand itself. Even the fact that they call her “Stereotypical Barbie” instead of like “Classic Barbie” that feels is so mean spirited.)
If you watched any trailer or interview about it, you would have known it was not a ''barbie movie'' and not a family movie in the traditional sense...
@@FrenkieWest32 well not everyone is gonna have the time to watch every single interview or trailer on it, plus most of the trailers did make it look like a family movie with some of the childish jokes (like the foot joke etc)

I really like the structure and expression of your essays. You have an ability to take complex issues, befuddled thinking, and topical politics into a coherent, passionate, and all together intellectually satisfying counter point to the trash that passes as thoughtful discourse in today's world.
This whole video was great! I’m so glad you didn’t give us a long history lesson on what Barbie is, her influence, etc and just jumped into your problems with the movies. Despite the lengths you had to edit the video so you didn’t get struck by the (unfair) copyright stuff, it was hilarious, had me laughing! Thank you for this gem of pink covered shit of a movie! Hopefully, you can cover some other movies or media in the future that being you more joy than pain. Cheers to you!
Took me a while to get through the entire essay but it was good, and I honestly don't know what could've been cut to make it shorter. Hoping it doesn't get claimed. Congrats on the work! To me the most insane part is how Gosling got nominated for best supporting actor while Robbie got nominated for nothing. If that doesn't say anything, I don't know what will.
Same I’d volunteer too to be part of making it. I’d want it to be recorded with old 2000s or 90s video film equipment to give it that girly 90s/2000s movie feel yk? Lol
@@txwtw well if I had it my way I was thinking of kind of showcasing Barbie as an actual person with like a childhood and life with her younger sisters, Skipper (which could be a nickname), Stacie and Chelsea (also another sister or relative with the name Kelly which was the old name for Chelsea dolls), you could show her parents and her friends. That’s kind of what I was thinking. Ken could be a childhood friend and the two would crush on each other until they confessed.
Nutsa you absolute gem. It feels refreshing to hear your takes on popular media from a true feminist point of view. I've watched a LOT of your content already and I feel so glad you're bringing up all these issues via a critical and as-objective-as-possible point of view, not at the expense of men. You preaching women AND men alike should strive to be better and not putting any gender above the other is a strong message that needs to be heard everywhere because it feels like a lot of "feminist" rhetoric is about the rise of women at the expense of men. Keep up the good work.
Does anyone else think it's weird that the Barbie movie doesn't even have Kelly, Stacy, or Skipper (not grow-up Skipper) in it? There is so much Barbie lore they could have added, like the Happy Family line having the first elderly Barbie couple, the grandparents! That could have gone with their aging gracefully message. It feels like they just looked at Wikipedia while writing the script and that's it. I also don't like how everyone is just "Barbie and Ken" when the toy-line has a whole cast of characters. Edit: I just finished the video and you brought up the Wikipedia script writing too. Glad others picked up on that. 😅 How can they say Barbie has no story when she has a webseries, movies, books, and video games about her!
When I watched this with my mum, at the end when they did the "debrainwashing" scene, she said "men experience more than half of this, too". So not only did this have non-Bechdel feminism because everything was stated relative to men's experiences, it also didn't do it in a way that even acknowledged or understood men's experiences.
There’s a video Alteori made about this movie and she talked about it as well, she observed that this movie glorifies everything considered “feminine” but it antagonizes everything considered “masculine”, she even made another version of Gloria’s speech but about men’s struggles
I think being fooled by marketing is only part of the issue. When movies tackle certain themes, you can be seen as a bigot for being against said movie, even if the themes aren't good or well implemented. I remember trying to warn my friends about barbie, saying something along the lines of "when big companies take an animated property that has good lessons and morals, and try to condense it into a live action film, they usually do a bad job." And i got accused of 'hating like a man' and 'not being a girls girl.'
Honestly kens version of Barbie land seemed less unfair??? At least they wanted to hang out with the Barbie’s and have them around vs how the Barbie’s completely ignored the kens and didn’t even know where they slept??? Idk man lol like the kens were homeless and had no rights. Just watch Life Size, it was a better doll movie lol
Barbie could be like Paddington with nuance regarding adults behaving finnaly like adults while letting girls explore and have fun. Barbie could be an aspirational character, a pink hyper competent freak of nature
Wow. I initially thought the movie was mediocre and overhyped when I watched it, but your analysis made me realize it was actually just straight up bad😂😂
now that i finished this video, i can say that as a girl who has grown up on Barbie, figuring out that the person who directed the movie didn't even get a sense of who the TITLE CHARACTER is INSANE. kind reminder that if you want to do a project and you aren't excited to do it... maybe don't do it!
Okay... THIS was not only fun to watch, brutally inspiring edited but also made me reflect on not only this movie but storytelling in general, really gave me a new perspective. THANKS Nutsa, truly inspiring!☺
It's funny you should mention the potential story arc for Barbie. Since that's basically the story I'm writing. Except the main character is more like a Bratz doll than a Barbie and her story arc is basically the reverse of this. She starts off believing her base doll is more harmful than helpful and that she needs to over compensate for that to truly make a difference and empower her human companion and others. Over the course of the story she meets people who were inspired by her doll in one way or another and she realizes it's not so black and white. Resulting in her ending up a healthier well balanced individual by the end. She even befriends a Barbie-like doll. It's still very much a work in progress, but that's the general idea.
I remember being interested in this movie after the first few trailers, I thought it would be like a fusion of the LEGO Movie and Legally Blonde. A lighthearted comedy with some delightful character development and a positive uplifting message... But of course, this is current year, and that's just not good enough. It had to be struggle session about how hard it is to be a woman. So people champion the film just because it preaches their ideology, It could have been something special, but had to shoot for the low hanging fruit instead of the stars.
the subscribe lightup worked!!! new sub, loving this so far. i watched barbie with a group of friends. they all walked out loving it… i didn’t. i thought i was crazy. so, so glad i’m not alone, and so glad it didnt win undeserved oscars (congrats poor things!)
At the beginning of the movie I was really enjoying myself. I love pink, glitter and pop music. It was fun! But then with every scene I was becoming more and more bored and the closer to the end, the more often I was rolling my eyes. I think it could have been a good film if it were aimed at kids. But no, it was for adults and as an adult feminist I felt like I was being treated as a child who needs everything explained and won't notice how many things don't make sense.
I don’t know what’s with movies and them taking a property aimed at kids and trying to make it all edgy and adult. Also yeah I agree I enjoyed the movie at the beginning too but a lot of the political stuff later on was really handled poorly and just came off as obnoxious but that’s just me
Oh em goodness, someone FINALLY addresses that the movie directly states it takes both a doll and a human playing with said doll to change things. Every other review I've seen just ignores that very important line.
yk what i thought the film was going to be about after learning barbie needed to go to the real world to find her depressed human (then finds out it's bc mother and daughter aren't getting along)? I thought the film would be about barbie getting these two to mend their relationship and it would focus on building their characters and establishing emotional attachments for the audience. That would have been a simple, wholesome plot with good stakes, and you could have had them all bonding only for it to be revealed near the end that barbie is doing this for selfish reasons or something and then mother and daughter get mad at her for like manipulating them and we have a brief separation before they reunite. If we'd wanted to throw in some social commentary about patriarchy and feminism then we could have done that along the way, i'm sure. But I'm convinced this film didn't exist to tell a story, it just existed so the writer could tell everyone her political views. Which, imo as someone who aspires to be a fiction writer, is not a good enough reason for this film to exist. Many, many people have written beautifully crafted stories to present a message they believe in. There is no excuse for this film to not have done that. The only reason I enjoyed the film was because of the way it looked and the fact Margo Robbie and Ryan Gosling are great actors. This film has no substance. i wrote a more coherent plot in 10 seconds in my head while i was in the cinema than anyone working on that film did in months.
The Barbie movie exists and is wildly successful, along with the America impossible monologue for the same reason this video essay does: catharsis and validation.

@@FrenkieWest32 You say this as if nobody with standards has reasonable ones. Some movies are actually shit, _THAT_ is exactly how it works~
@@duncanlutz3698 wait, the movie is supposedly based on a disneyland ride? I never knew it, that's ridiculous.

@@ThatWeirdFinn holy shit, please just respect opinions
I don't even know why writers want source material anyway when half the time it's like they don't even check it out lmao.
It’s so they can claim that they came up with certain ideas when it succeeds
It's more so the investors and studios want a recognisable IP rather than something original. The writers would love to create original works, but to get the funding they basically have to do an in name only adaptation of an IP because that's all that gets greenlit. Like the Velma series was originally just a passion project Mindy Kahling wanted to make but it had to get tied to the Scooby Doo brand to get off the ground
Or the 4th season of True Detective. It should not have been a 4th season but a stand alone series about 2 women detectives in Alaska. Like "the frontier" or any Norwegian detective.
Because they need to exploit the name of the brand to attract audience
They _don't_ want source materials, they want IP and a preexisting audience/fanbase
i liked the part where they obsess over there not being any women in charge of Mattel MEANWHILE IN THE REAL WORLD there are 5 women on the board of directors of Mattel (just about half) so their satire doesn't even work and actively lies to gullible feminists.

15 seconds of remembering how good Truman show was invoked in me more emotions than the whole Barbie movie by a mile
!!!
That goes for most of the movies coming out in recent years!
I had that problem too
Margot Robbie’s character basically disappears from the movie in like the third quarter and is mostly replaced by America Ferreras character.

Well, that felt rather anti-climatic!"
I guess maybe it's supposed to be anti-climatic, because it's funny, but...i don't know, dudes.
Afterwards I came home and my mom asked me "Did you like it" and all I could say was "No" and I sat in my room to process all my disappointment
that is really unfortunate
I imagine the Mom couldn’t have felt good about it, either.
Yea
I thought the same thing about Oppenheimer.
@@marcellacassab4331 Yeah, what made her want to leave Barbieland? What did she want to stay in the real world for? It made no sense!
that speech given by the mother at the end pissed me off. like putting aside my thoughts on the contents of the speech, if you're going to have a character give a speech like that.... it is basic storytelling logic to have shown them experiencing/dealing with these issues beforehand. otherwise it comes across like they're extremely privileged and complaining about problems they don't have. it would have 100% made more sense for barbie (the only one we see actually experience sexism in the story) to have made that speech right before she decides she definitely doesn't want to go and be a human. adios. humanity sucks.
that speech was awful. i've seen it be praised as groundbreaking so many times but america literally says pretty much the same thing word for word in a throw-away scene in her show superstore eight years prior. it just felt cheap and recycled.
@@Femmeaesthetic i do understand why people relate to it. it lists a lot of things a lot of women go through (not me personally, but ik plenty of women who have). it’s a speech that’s supposed to invoke a superficial feeling of relation without doing the narrative or character work to back itself up or make any genuinely insightful social commentary. it doesn’t seek to do anything but appeal to people who already agree with that point of view. the entire film feels like it has such a surface-level understanding of gender inequality. the whole film it felt like i was being lectured with the same points over and over again in the least subtle way possible “all men bad, do assault, oppress. women best in world.”
which is just a lie because there are positives and negatives that come with being either gender.
@shhimreading906 Why can't you ait that you probably can't relate to that speech because your behind is privilege.
This film feels like Greta trying to be a copycat of Rian Johnson: wants to have this preachy story about X social issue, but then simultaneously attempt to evade criticism by having several characters say "shut up and don't think about it".
I mean also like as a feminist.... Greta doesn't understand feminism lol
Or the two of them just really want to do something ambitious but they don’t know what
They seemingly end up making up the movies plot as they are filming the damn thing.
I dont dislike either of them as filmmakers generally but I’m basically describing Barbie and The Last Jedi
It’s obvious as a mushroom cloud they want to do something ambitious but don’t know what, as I mentioned before. They are given the task of a modern installment of a classic franchise and they feel the need to do something unexpected with the main character but not only are they confused but they’re not considering how it effects these characters in the long run.

@@something-from-elsewhereyou know a director I think is quite a feminist but gets no credit for it? The way they ignored the lore really irked me. Not only did they ignore her name, but all her friends and family over the years: Stacy, Kelly/Chelsea, her parents, Teresa, Christie, Raquelle, Kira, Becky etc.

Because it’s not just “hope” for a good product on its own that the hype bubble brings.
Ryan needs to stop taking such a meaningless role so seriously. He is probably one of those method actor d bags

Why would women be more relational than men if we are supposed to relate with each other?

Am I really going to spend 1 hour and 45 minutes watching a new Nutsa video about Barbie at 1:00 AM?
OF COURSE I AM!

What a nutsa video wow what a great way to spend the weekend
In a world where “aesthetic” is everything, this happens
Omg you're back !
I’m gonna watch this bit by bit during my breaks at work today.
Barbie getting Nutsa’d.
If i ever hear her voice within 2 miles of me, she's gettin nutsa'd
Smart move to cast Ryan Gosling because he is so insanely loved
Without him the movie would have bombed
Sorry I meant Mattel had 40% female CEOs
What?! She didn’t GROW UP with Barbie?!
Unbelievable!
Why did Mattel approach her to make this film in the first place, then?!
@@worthybutter2004bc she’s a feminist filmmaker famously known for indie movies, that’s all you need to know. Hollywood is a huge industry, could’ve hired any female director who knew the source material
She didn’t know or even grow up with barbie?? You gotta be kidding me rn 💀
@@worthybutter2004 ikr
I'm a simple man. I see a smart woman ranting about a shitty movie - I hit the like button!
@@txwtw not true. And if you just go to a 2 hour movie but you don't have the time for 2 minutes of trailer (which does not even make sense), then don't be surprised if it is an unexpected movie...
America did get nominated though
Gosling carried the movie.
Gosling carried the movie.
It's ironic that Ken is the most popular part of the film isn't it
I honestly thought that barbie was going to be the most popular part
If another Barbie movie gets to be made, maybe I volunteer to be part of the team! Love Barbie so much, my entire childhood!
Same I’d volunteer too to be part of making it. I’d want it to be recorded with old 2000s or 90s video film equipment to give it that girly 90s/2000s movie feel yk? Lol
@@txwtw I could see that. I would really like something princess themed or ballet themed since those are kind of iconic for Barbie movies.
@@cadencek3576 do you have any ideas on what the story for it could be?/genq
@@txwtw well if I had it my way I was thinking of kind of showcasing Barbie as an actual person with like a childhood and life with her younger sisters, Skipper (which could be a nickname), Stacie and Chelsea (also another sister or relative with the name Kelly which was the old name for Chelsea dolls), you could show her parents and her friends. That’s kind of what I was thinking. Ken could be a childhood friend and the two would crush on each other until they confessed.
I would like a princess idea but definitely.
I like how the video is almost as long as the movie itself
Better use of our time, lol. That, and rewatching the old CGI Barbie movies.
The Tarantino foot joke was so unexpected I did a double take. Bravo
Wow. I initially thought the movie was mediocre and overhyped when I watched it, but your analysis made me realize it was actually just straight up bad😂😂
This entire review has critical thinking & constructive criticisms while at the same time being frustrated about this movie. Your genius !
now that i finished this video, i can say that as a girl who has grown up on Barbie, figuring out that the person who directed the movie didn't even get a sense of who the TITLE CHARACTER is INSANE. kind reminder that if you want to do a project and you aren't excited to do it... maybe don't do it!
Okay... THIS was not only fun to watch, brutally inspiring edited but also made me reflect on not only this movie but storytelling in general, really gave me a new perspective. THANKS Nutsa, truly inspiring!☺
Wait, one of the people in charge of this film made _Marriage Story?_ How-? What-? I-
I'm honestly shocked.
"Marriage Story" was based on Noah Baumbach's breakup with Jennifer Jason Leigh and leaving her for Greta Gerwig.
Sounds great!
I’d like to see it
I hope you publish that story some day it sounds lovely
Nutsa has returned!!!
this is literally exactly how ive been feeling about that movie
im way farther into the video now, just heard your version of story-line, so good dude
Same everyone I know loved it and adored it but I didn’t either 😭
At the beginning of the movie I was really enjoying myself. I love pink, glitter and pop music. It was fun! But then with every scene I was becoming more and more bored and the closer to the end, the more often I was rolling my eyes.
I think it could have been a good film if it were aimed at kids. But no, it was for adults and as an adult feminist I felt like I was being treated as a child who needs everything explained and won't notice how many things don't make sense.
I don’t know what’s with movies and them taking a property aimed at kids and trying to make it all edgy and adult. Also yeah I agree I enjoyed the movie at the beginning too but a lot of the political stuff later on was really handled poorly and just came off as obnoxious but that’s just me
I love the editing on this video. Having such editing on a feature length video cannot be understated
Oh em goodness, someone FINALLY addresses that the movie directly states it takes both a doll and a human playing with said doll to change things. Every other review I've seen just ignores that very important line.
Hey Shady. True statement
yk what i thought the film was going to be about after learning barbie needed to go to the real world to find her depressed human (then finds out it's bc mother and daughter aren't getting along)?
