I loved that crazy phase he was going through 10-11 years ago because it was entertaining as hell but I’m even happier that he is completely sober and doing well. He’s “winning” now

You’re lookin at a rockstar baby he was winning then hahaha some of he most fun times I had in my life was fueled by crazy drug use! I don’t do any of that any more in my 30s, but as long as you’re not a loser you can pretty much take substances, play with them, and put them down. As he said, some people have things “woven in their quilt” and that means, unfortunately, they can’t control themselves. Obviously he was winning then and now because he’s still talking about it AND experienced it.

There was nothing entertaining about it, it was sad because he was clearly struggling. But people like you find amusement in others pain. Disgusting.

I'm 40. 21 years of iv heroin and fentynl, 2 years before that on morphine pills, and from 13 and up it was crack cocaine and alcohol 5-6 days a week. I'm from Detroit Michigan, eastside. 26x in rehab, 10x on suboxone, 6x on methadone, and I still can't stop. It's so hard. I am FIGHTI G FOR MY LIFE evey single day.
Please! Please never ever pick up!
Trauma is at the root of ALL serious addictions to drugs. I was raped and molested from m age 4 to 7. I developed PTSD and still deal daily with it since age 6/7. Anxiety and depression daily. It's so hard. I'm trying so hard. Homeless. Starving. Lonely. Scared.
Please L O V E yourself and get help! Talk to others about your problems! Stay away from toxic negative people!
Much love to you ALL ❤

Keep fighting, you never know how circumstances might change.
Very similar happened to me. I've been sober 10 years now after my entire youth was lost to PTSD & alcohol. I'm overly aware how lucky I am to have (unwittingly) escaped. I lost every attempt to stay off booze.
I eventually became homeless for 16 weeks. Found a home & a little stability. Several years later I nearly died from septicaemia. The sad truth is, I'd not have stopped booze without being placed in a coma to help fight the infection.
The day I came out of the 4 day coma everything was like Christmas. I was very, very (deathly) ill but no earth shattering anxiety or depression - I was free from my reason to drink (I drank to cope with the aforementioned). I literally had no reason to continue to drink, I could finally move on and face my past without being perpetually debilitated mentally and physically by a fear I had no control over.
BTW it wasn't because I nearly died - this isn't one of those near death experiences or moments of clarity - shrinks are baffled - I called the coma a, "hard reset" that somehow effectively removed the colossal anxiety I'd been experiencing since the age of 14 (I had to leave school. I couldn't sleep in a bed or be in public etc).
Of course I still have my issues but not at one point does overwhelming anxiety come into play and therefore I've no need to for the sedation that alcohol offered. In fact booze kinda terrifies me nowadays, the smell acts like regression, booze has caused it's own form of 'PTSD'. I associate booze with an awful period even though booze was not part of my initial issues. However I'm also aware that without booze I'd have killed myself long ago. It was a catch 22 situation. 1½ litres of vodka a day for years was only ever going to end one way. I thought about taking drugs but my anxiety would never allow it. I'd shake with fear just being near people who just smoked marijuana. The idea of anything elicit scared me more than any physical pain, another catch 22 at the time.
I wish you all the best.

This is deeply inspiring. If Charlie can get his act together, then we all can do it . I had to pleasure of getting to know him, at a time when his TV show had just entered syndication and his divorce was being finalized (2007). He was crazy good looking in person and was wearing a wickedly expensive looking vicuna coat - very stylish dresser. I didn't know who he was and he didn't let on. Called himself Carlos. Then switched on the TV and my jaw dropped. He's is extremely polite and well spoken. He took great interest in my books on screen writing and wanted to know how it was going for me, then acted like he wanted to marry my cat. I've never seen a guy so nuts about cats.

Glad to see him doing better, seems like a smart enough man....I still think those interviews from 12 years ago are the best work of his career and if we are to believe the news anchor who covered it, he passed the drug test he took before the interview so it wasn't just mindless junkie rambling, there was a lot of charisma behind it! Glad to see he didn't stay in "Warlock Mode" because it did start to become a bit frightening, funny as it was.

I think Charlie has long been a functional addict just as a baseline. We only noticed it when it got way out of control.
After things calmed down a bit, he appeared on talk shows and seemed relatively normal. There was a roast where he was semi-normal and funny. But at that point, he was just the baseline addict.
He spiraled into a manic episode, and that's what we all saw as the train wreck. But he could still move on without really getting sober. It was just quieter.
He talks about alcohol here, but he has also done a lot of hard drugs at insane levels. I hope he has purged all of that from his life, but you never know.
It sounds like he got to a point where there was nowhere else to go with the drinking...he had built up such a tolerance for alcohol that he literally couldn't get the buzz from it. That's terrifying.
He also contracted HIV along the way. He was notorious for patronizing sex workers, and guys like that might be downright dangerous.
He is fortunate to be alive, but he also needs to be held accountable for his actions, intoxicated or otherwise. He assaulted and threatened women. He may have done even worse than that.

Interesting though and I agree….mostly. I got clean from opioids and methamphetamine 4 years ago but I smoke marijuana almost daily and drink alcohol occasionally. I wrestle with the fact that I’m not totally clean but I think if I did quit everything then I’d be very appt to relapse. The marijauna keeps me “content” so to speak. Do you think it’s better for people to be mostly clean or not at all?
Side note I quit smoking weed about a week ago, not to get clean but to get a commercial drivers license. I’m not planning on being a truck driver, it’s just goes with the job I already have but I’m curious to see if I will want to smoke again after a few months totally clean.

Not knowing which town you are in makes me wonder; Does Charlie not own a smartphone?
Interesting monologue, realistic guy but of course still on the edge.
As for the producers; Multi band compressor, severe limiter on everything under 70hz that's above -10dB, or hang those mics on the ceiling :D.

i think im officially now at the point where its almost too difficult to drink anything fast enough to even get drunk regardless of what the total amounts are, it just doesnt work as much, usually when you start you know a few glasses of wine and you get that warmth or a 6 pack of beer for example, but now even though i dont even drink every week necessarily, when i do it'll take at least a big liter bottle and a half of a whisky or a gin to get to the warmth and BEGINNINGS of drunkenness that when i first started drinking one third of that would do, so the initial ability was already astronomically high, so i can understand why Charlie looks at a pint of vodka and goes okay, i hope it works rather than '''duh obviously its going to'' which isnt always the case which is IMPOSSIBLE to believe until it happens then its a hmmm okay, well i guess i need to move on to something else so to speak. I'm glad that for the extremists like us that getting to the end of efficacy is how we stop because eventually it gets pointless then sobriety is the reverse and becomes special i think because its simply so different its almost like a drug to somebody whos been loaded for so long. which is probably why you dont hear about him having a bunch of relapses, because the new thing is nothing and you kinda have to develop that into being exciting because it sure as hell doesnt come naturally.

Shame Shiver, this is the first time I have heard someone describe what i feel is like sticking my tongue on a 9v battery every time i think about touching a pipe. Something happened, and 3 years of using stopped. Every time I think of it, I get this really acidic taste and feel on my tongue. It strikes my senses and it touches my nerves. I can do a cheeky line still here n there. The pipe was my mistress and I was its bitch. Never again.

if anyone who has been an addict can answer this question for me:
Does someone in recovery talking about their past in excitement sometimes rub you the wrong way?

    • @danieldougan269
      @danieldougan269 Рік тому

I am no addict, but I think that's just Charlie being Charlie. He is a unique individual. He has a unique manner of speaking. I have been watching his work for many years, and that's just his personality. That's part of what makes him a gifted actor.
If you watch the most recent John Mulaney special, he talks about his addiction in a similar way.
Now, you can interpret this one of two ways.
      1) He is just a comedic storyteller, and he is looking for some comic relief to describe a tough situation.
      2) He is not taking his sobriety seriously, and he looks back on his substance abuse period with some fondness. He went to rehab because someone made him.
I hope it's #1 for Charlie and John, but you never know. The whole "shame shivers" conversation gives me hope for Charlie because you can see he does have serious regrets.
