  • Hello guys,
    We travel East along the incredible Loch Tay, sometimes looking like a Norwegian Fjord, to Pitlochry.
    We stay at the Milton of Fonab campsite, another beautiful location, and wander into Pitlochry, where it appears that Christmas is celebrated all year round!!
    And then across the Pitlochry dam to see if we can see the Salmon travelling upstream at the "Fish Ladder". Finally a seat ovelooking the River Tummel, watching the fish jump and seeing if we can film Dippers, beautiful unique little birds.
    Hope you enjoy this one guys, and thanks for watching
    Dave & Sue.

      I was just so pleased to get the Dipper in a decent bit of film Anne. While I was filming early that morning, the Salmon were jumping. They make a heck of a noise but I just couldn’t capture it on film.

      Yes we always try to Victor. We plan to not drive for more than 2.5 hours so that we can stay longer on a site and then arrive early on the next one 👍
      Ah he’s, some of the facilities are a bit like school - but these ones were really luxurious 👍
      Hope you’re doing well and have a good rest of the week 👍👍

      Gosh didn’t realise they needed them for Herring too Brenda. But makes obvious sense!
      The River was so beautiful - lovely to watch the Dippers and wished I had captured the Salmon leaping - they were really loud as they splashed back down!

    What an amazing drive, thought I recognised the place till I saw the sign for Blair Athol, it was there i had completed at the castle, stunning part of the world, it’s now on our to do list. Great video.

      Cheers mate - yes that drive was brilliant - looked like a Norwegian Fjord at places along there
      We did like Pitlochry - very cool (but expensive) little town.
      Amazing that you competed at the Castle - one of the things we would change about this trip was to stay longer at each site and not move around so much. Would have loved to visit the Distillery and the Castle. Hope you got back ok at the weekend - we haven’t worked out whether to wave at another Motorhome when you overtake it or just stare straight ahead 😃. So many going South on the A1!

      It’s such a lovely old town - pretty expensive everywhere but where isn’t these days.
      The drive along Loch Tay is so beautiful. It felt like a Norwegian Fjord in places!
      The river, dam and fish ladder are brilliant - and the little pub on the river was so lovely.
      Loved filming the Dippers - fascinating little birds - I just wished I had been able to capture the Salmon jumping - they were amazing to see!

    Beautiful area and lovely tour, Sue and Dave. Nice campground. We have a town on Lake Superior that actually is named Christmas and also has all the shops for it too. Damn dams always change the environment. But, quite often needed too. It's great they build the salmon ladder here. They've done that in a number of places in Alaska too. Thanks for bringing us along.

      Thanks for watching guys. We couldn’t believe the Christmas Shop 😃. Amazing - I didn’t know that there was a town called Christmas in Wisconsin, must be a strange place to live!
      The Salmon ladder was fascinating. They had a live count of the number of fish that had used the ladder. The numbers are reducing fast year on year 😨
      Anyway, hope you guys are well and having a good week back in your beautiful home State

    Hey guys,
    Wow what a beautiful day! Nowhere better to be on a sunny day than beautiful Scotland 😍. Loved your pitch for Florrie, 5 star indeed👌. The town looked very twee, lovely to stroll around on a nice day. Who doesn't love a bit of Christmas in May? Very festive 🎄🎅. The fish ladder! What a brilliant idea 😊🐟👌. Ooh that little pub by the river looked ideal 🍻🥂. Great footage of the elusive dipper Dave, they are fabulous little birds ❤.
    Another fabulous installment of your Scottish adventure, looking forward to catching up on the rest soon 😊
    All the best,

      Cheers guys, we loved it there. That little pub on the river with Salmon jumping and trying to spot Dippers was idyllic!
      I had a strange feeling beforehand that we didn’t want to really leave the West Coast and that nothing would be as good.
      But the areas we then visited were wonderful, Christmas and all 😃
      Really enjoyed Pitlochry, the scenery was amazing!

    We used to break our journey at Pitlochry and the Fish Ladder for a cup of tea and a rest. Th road through Pitlochry used to be the main A9 it used to take 6hrs to get from Perth to Inverness you can now do it in less than 2 with the new A9 by passing all the slow spots. I am off on a 5 day Donder.

      Hi mate. Yes I remember the old A9. When I was a lad my Dad stopped and we wandered down to the Fish Ladder. Stuck in the memory that place.

    Dave, that was great!
    What a beautiful town and a lovely drive. It actually looked like summer when you arrived at that camp spot.
    I know they build those bridges for the salmon but it’s such a shame because they look rather high for them to jump up, but was lovely that you managed to catch the dipper in the end ,
    Enjoyed that. 👍♥️

    • @NBNatureTrailvan
      @NBNatureTrailvan  2 місяці тому

      Cheers Phil. Yes a beautiful little town - very expensive everywhere though! And we did have amazing weather for most of our trip. This was probably the best day.
      Really pleased to get the Dipper. I thought that the walls on the fish Ladder were too high, but apparently they have spaces at the bottom of each part of the ladder for the fish to swim through. We tried to spot some with no luck but they were jumping in the main river while I was filming the Dipper!
      Thanks again mate 👍👍

    That is certainly another amazing location to pitch up for sure! The Christmas store would have been my mom's happy place. Those fish ladders are incredible...we have several around the province to help with getting the Atlantic Salmon to return to some areas. Hmmm...you guys seem to have an uncanny ability in finding yourselves a pub! lol Got some pretty great footage of the Dipper! Have a great rest of the week and keep up the wonderful adventuring!!

    • @NBNatureTrailvan
      @NBNatureTrailvan  2 місяці тому +1

      Thanks Bruce. Yes couldn’t believe the. Christmas Shop. How bizarre! 😃. The town is very cool but the fish ladder was fascinating. A lot less fish passing up the ladder now than a few years back. They reckon only about a third of the numbers in the 80’s.
      Ha yes the pub. Google Earth is our friend 😃😃
      The Dippers were great to see. I also watched Salmon jumping but I lost that bit if film somehow!!
      Hope you’re having a good week Bruce. 👍👍

    Sorry I’ve gotten so far behind. We have been going from sun up to sun down on projects here trying to get ready for the girls and their families visiting the cabin. It may be a while before we get caught up. 😂😂
    Loved the countryside here. Nice drive and campsite. Everything is sos green. The river just beautiful. We’ve seen the fish ladders like that in Alaska. I wish I could remember where it was. That does look like a great pub with lots to see while enjoying your brew. Great shots of the birds. Those dippers are so quick and agile when they dive.

    • @NBNatureTrailvan
      @NBNatureTrailvan  Місяць тому +1

      Oh gosh. Hope you can get it done before they arrive guys.
      The Fish ladder is great especially as they record how many Salmon make it up. A lot less than a decade or so back.
      Pitlochry is a beautiful little town but pretty expensive. But the pub by the river was a real find. Loved it there.
      Another site where we wished we had stayed longer. Lessons learned on this trip. Not so much travelling and longer at each place.
      Love watching Dippers but wished I had captured the Salmon leaping that morning! They were amazing and really loud as they hit the water again!
      Have a good week ahead guys and hope you’re both doing well 👍👍👍

    Looked a busy but very picturesque campsite, looked very clean as well 5* indeed. The weather was amazing, perfect walking into Pitlochry and seen one of those Christmas shops in York and Windermere, which I always go in lol. Good idea with the fish ladder but the pub and a pint was a better one! You manage to get real lucky with your wildlife filming or is it just patients paying off, cheers Alan

    • @NBNatureTrailvan
      @NBNatureTrailvan  Місяць тому

      Hi Alan, mate - never seen a Christmas shop in May 🤣🤣
      Managed to persuade Sue not to go in!!
      That little pub on the river was heaven (though they didn''t serve proper beer) 😃 but it was such a beautiful spot.
      With the wildlife, I'm not one for sitting and waiting normally - only for Otters. But seeing the Dippers the night before, I thought I would take my big lens out and there they were.👍
      What was really amazing was the Salmon. As I was filming the Dippers there were huge fish jumping and very loud splashes as they re entered the water. I just couldn't get them on film though - too spread out and too fast!!
      But a lovely spot.

    Wonderful views of Loch Tay from the west side. Beautiful! We came from Aberfeldy through Kenmore and over to Fortingall to see the Yew tree (and forgot to have our camera running until we got to Fortingall, as you can see in our video). We missed Pitlochry as we left the A9 across from Dunkheld and didn't get back on it until after left Fortingall. Our loss... but we loved seeing your visit there!

      @NBNatureTrailvan Loch Tay and that area is indeed a beautiful area! We loved driving around there... but then we were loving everywhere (while pinching myself that I was finally touring Scotland after waiting 40+ years). Hi Dave, that sure is a beautiful road trip down the side of Loch Tay. I'm always wowed by it and going thro the 2 lovely villages of Killin and Kemore. I stayed in Pitlochry a couple of years and my staple diet of an evening was fish n chips at the big chippy. Your refreshments by the river certainly trumped that. The site looked lovely and well kept. I think I'd prefer online check in but finding your pitch looks fun. I wasn't say it was cheap tho at almost 40 quid but then again I don't know the going rates for that type of things. You certainly dropped lucky with the weather. Did you get any of that fresh salmon 🙂Paul

    • @NBNatureTrailvan
      @NBNatureTrailvan  2 місяці тому +1

      Our first time along that road Paul. Absolutely blown away! What a place - almost like a Norwegian Fjord in some parts.
      It was a really beautiful site - but as you say expensive. Although sites near towns are around that price. We think we averaged about £32 a night overall in the three weeks. Highest was £40, cheapest (and best ironically) £20. The better the facilities the higher the price like everything I suppose. We need to do more “wild” camping.
      Didn’t get any Salmon mate, but the morning I filmed the Dippers, they were nearly jumping on to the bank!

  • @FXWalesAnnaAlf

    Fabulous campsite guys with amazing views. Was that 38.95 per night the usual price for an electric pitch in Scotland? The views were brilliant as you drove, gorgeous wide river and the shop was good along with the toilet block and facilities in the site. Loved the look of Pitlochry and hehe that Christmas shop seemed funny to see in the sunshine. The dam was interesting too, shame it causes environmental problems though. The oub and its views liked beautiful and great that you captured that cute little dipper in the water. Beautiful 👍~ Anna

      That site was at the top end of prices we paid for a pitch. Most expensive was £40 and cheapest, but ironically our favourite, was £20.
      You’re paying for location and facilities really. Pitlochry is a rather well to do place and prices are high there.
      Loved that River, filming the Dippers, the Salmon were really jumping making huge splashes, but I couldn’t capture them on film!
      The drive along Loch Tay was an eye opener, such spectacular views!
