    Jack, tremendous thanks to you for the shout out and I'm very honored to be a HUGE fan and avid supporter of your awesome channel! Always love your channel content, your approach to your tone, and man, you're just very relatable gear nerd as well as very informative. As far as a question I would like to offer is about the Diezel VH4-2 pedal. I'm wanting so bad to buy one but my question is in relation about the two ways you can run it (front of amp versus loop). My question more or less would be to see the difference in tonal characteristics by using either the EQ settings on the pedal or the amp based on which method you'd choose. my plan was to morph my Marshall DSL100HR into faux Diezel as I am married and after having spent a small fortune on gear in the last great while, I'd rather not have my wife straight murder me for buying the real thing 🙃. I figured you'd be the best source to get into the nitty gritty on it... plus I think a VH2 versus VH4-2 pedal video would be pretty awesome. Once again, thank you for the shout out and as always, thank you for bringing us Toolophiles and gear geeks something to look forward to!

    the reverse pedal does make the volume swells sound like adam jones does, but i did FINALLY see tool after about 19 to 20 years of waiting to do so october of 19, on the floor of the arena in cleveland about 12 rows away from him, and he's hammering on the notes in the intro with a delay and using the volume knob to swell in the notes, not a reverse pedal. but i really do like this video. your channel is fantastic. also that big bend in the intro to the pot he plays on the second lowest string way higher on the neck, but its the same note you're hitting

    I've chased Adams tone a bit and came really close by using the following gear: Gibson Lp with Emg Hetset into a Mesa Dual Rectifier and a Marshall Plexi clone. The Mesa runs through one side of my Marshall cab with V30 speakers. The Plexi clone runs through a attenuator and then into the other side of the Marshall cab through a pair of Greenbacks. Both sides are each miced with a sm57 pointing on the edge of the dustcap. The Mesa is running on modern mode with the gain set quite high. It provides the bottom end and the really high topend. The Plexi clone is providing all the mid punch and the articulation in the sound. This Setup is basically nailing the Ænima tone. For the later albums it seems like you will need to add in a Diezel which will give these "weird" mids that Adam has since he started using the VH4. But still the tone is not that far of without a Diezel in the mix.
    Anyways great video
    und Gruß aus Norddeutschland :)

      You really don’t need any of this to sound like Adam as his core tone is really just old school Gibson and Marshall.
      Cheap as I can figure without getting too cheap. Get a Gibson scale length guitar with humbuckers (Epiphone?) and stick a set of 10-52 strings on it.
      Get a JCM 800 or a lower wattage (20-40) comparable clone of one (DSL?). Put that through a closed back cabinet with a Vintage 30 (Orange 1x12?).
      Also get a Tube Screamer clone (there are thousands), a Flanger, maybe a Dunlop Bass Wah and finally a pedal power supply.

    Double thumbs up for the sh6 and agree with you on the plasma pedal. Micro amp works well with vh4 if using a lot of cable but vh2 doesn't need it imo. Plasma sounds great through vh2. Also found out adam uses ruby el34bht and Eh6ca7 tubes. The ruby el34bht are the joneztone in the vh2 imo. Never thought i would like them so much more than kt77s and they would sound so close. Running them a tad hot and wow..really, really diggin them.

    Great videos! I'm a big noob in what concerns music engineering. Got your Adam Jones presets for the Line 6, but they don't sound as good through mine JBls and LDT BK600 (Bill Kehilier signature model). What do you think about the Diezel VH4 pedal into the Helix? Do you think it's a superfluous buy? I got some Adam jones presets that I'm quite happy with, but you know how it is with the never ending search for tone!!!

  • @jacknicholson5794
    @jacknicholson5794 4 роки тому +6

    Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents regarding his pedalboard. The signal chain is as follows.
    Guitar > 1st psm > that splits to either the tuners (korg dtr-1 and a peterson strobostomp and dead ends there for silent tuning) or the 2nd psm that splits to either straight to the amp or to the rest of the pedal chain. From there, mxr micro > goodrich 120 volume > DD-3 > BF-2 > FX40B > 535 (non Q) > back to 2nd psm. Now recently, he has added a 2nd DD-3 after the first one and is set to a slightly quicker delay with a shorter feedback. Even more recently (during the 2019 summer shows) he added yet another pedal, the mxr carbon copy deluxe. No idea yet if it will become a permanent part of the lineup or go the route of the line 6 delay that was only used a couple of times. Time will tell.
    If you run your chain in that order with as close as possible to the identical pedals (preferably the exact same), I promise you'll be happy. Any difference in tone from there is a matter of amp(s) and pickups. Speaking of which, AJ recently confirmed that he's always used an sd super distirtion in the bridge. That said, he's known for being somewhat misleading when giving out info. I've always ran the sd sh-4 jb with great results.

    Hey man, I just wanna ask one thing. I followed your previous video on the Jones 7ones and I did manage to get a decent tone through Bias FX 2 (Tried the Diezel VH4 amp sim too. Best one yet..really crispy sound)..I am poor and I only have a Blackstar Fly practice amp so that is why I use amp sims and VSTs to get the tone..So I have been having a difficult time trying to get the NEW tone from Fear Inoculum..can't even get close...You mentioned that plasma pedal might be essential...Is there any way that can be emulated in Bias FX or any other VST possibly? I am very new to this amp sim world so can't figure it out all on my own. Could really use some tips! Thanks for this and the previous video..it really did make me happy with the tone I currently have as I can never get it even close on a little practice amp!

    The sh6 can really do it all from modern metal to grunge to classic rock. I just Dial in my perfect mid to high gain tone, then dial back the volume on my guitar to get a lighter crunch tone that’s closer to clean but not quite. Where as in my experience the sh4 kinda sounds like ass when you roll back volume too much. To each his own at the end of the day. No judgement just my experiences.
