  • Four ways to emulate the epic tone from the fantastic guitarist from Tool.
    1st Method - 3 amps and fx pedals in the loop
    2nd Method - 1 amp and the crunch channel
    3rd Method - clean amp and a distortion pedal
    4th Method - digital i.e. a plugin

    On one of Adam's Diezel amps he uses a 2x15 Mesa Bass cabinet. The other Diezel is through a Mesa 4x12 guitar cabinet. Adam's pickup is also NOT a SH-4. It's a custom from SD. I talked to them a few years ago and ordered a Custom SH5 pickup, it's as close as they could get me, they obviously cannot release his specs on his pickup.
    His WAH is a 535Q. I was lucky enough to see his rig in person, up close, at the VIP Music Clinic tour they held earlier this year. I got to stand right where he does, got to see the whole rig as close as I wanted to, just couldn't touch anything obviously.
    He also just rolls his volume knob back for clean tones, he does not use a clean channel on his amp at all. Only songs he uses the neck pickup for are "H" and "No Quarter". Rolls tone knob down for "jimmy" and "Pushit". That's all I can think of right now, great work bro!!!!

      Hey Mike! Thanks for the informed input! Very useful. And you are one lucky guy getting to see his setup up close and personal. You're probably one of few people who has gotten the chance. Has he always had the custom SD pickup? I was under the impression he used a SH-4 (maybe only in the early stuff) before they were famous enough to be approached by Seymour Duncan.
      And thanks for the input to the WAH and tone/volume controls. I did mention in the video that he never uses a clean channel and that it's all based on volume control. So you mentioning it as well confirms my statement; cheers ;-)

      @@BasementGAS No problem man! I've done VIP at 3 of their concerts and when they offered the music clinic I just couldn't pass up the chance. It was simply amazing.
      As far as the pickup, I've seen in VIP with Adam, many people ask him about it. He's very coy, and won't come out and answer the question at all really. On his back up Silver Burst, you can see the trademark Seymour Duncan stamp on the pickup, not sure what model it is, on the main Silver burst he uses, there is no such stamp. I bought a Vintage Les Paul Silverburst a few years ago, I have a 1980. I threw in a SH-4 cause all I've ever read is that what he uses, and the guitar just had NO mids and highs. The vintage Silver Bursts and so heavy and naturally low end, you need a bright pick up to really bring out the mids and highs. I play in a Tool Tribute band if it's not obvious yet, lol. I got frustrated and just reached out to Seymour Duncan personally telling them what I was looking for. They straight up told me the Custom SH5 is one Adam loves, and the closest I'll get to his actual pick up. the mystery continues...... :)

    • @BasementGAS

      @@mikebrennan9633 That's very cool Mike! I'd love to get a Tool tribute band started here, but the following in Germany is not so apparent as in other countries. There are fans, but they hide away in dark spaces lol. I might just have to pick up (pun intended) a SH5 and slap into my custom LP.
      And yes, the mystery will continue. It will be interesting to see if he changes his rig at all in the new tour following the album release next year. (Please god let the album come out next year - the wait has been like watching paint dry lol)

    • @mikebrennan9633
      @mikebrennan9633 5 років тому +25

      @@BasementGAS Dude, don't even get me started on the album wait. In the Music Clinic they confirmed that the drums were fully done and recorded. Nothing else was done, bass was close. Adam was last of the instruments to get recorded and he still hand't completed that yet as of this summer. They also gave the real story as to why it's taken so long, and honestly it's a bit heartbreaking. They've been fighting legal battles for years upon years with their old record label. They refuse to lay down, and they eventually won. They will always do it their way. Maynard was 100% not the reason as some state. It was their legal battles, and the guys just taking their time writing the new stuff. It's the band , not Maynard that takes forever, lol. Maynard has been bugging them for years to get him music. And he will not write lyrics til he gets the "FINAL" copy of each song. ALl this was straight from the band members mouths at the Music Clinic.
      They also said a ton of the new album is in 7/8 time, no song is short, I believe I heard no song under 7 minutes long. Someone asked Adam what work he's most proud of and without hesitation he said, "The New Album". So we have something special coming our way I feel.
      I know Adam uses different amps during recording at times, but he'll keep his current setup live, it's his go to tone.
      Im trying to think of other cool notes form the music clinic I can share. The band started out playing "The Grudge". Danny mentioned that is the most physically taxing song he plays. The most difficult song to play is "Rosetta Stoned". That one is also Adam's favorite song to play live. Their set list is 100% done by what Maynard can sing. He creates the setlists for live shows. They also played Eulogy at the music clinic, absolutely one of my favorites. And I got to see how Adam correctly plays the verses. Justin's hardest song to play is "The First One". He gets so amped up his hands cramp up when they first hit the stage. Then he settles in. We got to see a new video for Opiate they will eventually release. they recorded the extended version they've been playing live and made a whole new video for it. they also said they still love each other like brothers and have never fought over money, they split everything 4 ways, no matter what. Even the music clinic tour that Maynard was not a part of, he got his share from it.

    First time I seen Tool on a very small stage for the undertow tour I remember Adam used just the DD a equalizer and a 50 watt Marshall Plexi. It was a very good sounding bare bones set up and it sounded killer. I'm not saying you're wrong but I remembered on the next album is that's where he expanded his pedalboard to what you see now.

    Diezel has a VH4 pedal now. I use it along with Misha Mansoor's precision drive, a Line 6 DL4 and TB4 pickup running Reaper on my laptop.....Yamaha HS8 monitors. Sounds pretty authentic. I kinda developed my own Tool"ish" sound by other means though. Since I love MIDI guitar and the ability to alternate tune digitally I am running a VG99 using RMC setup through Amplitube using DADADA tuning. Soldano SLO 100 and a ping pong delay with a more scooped mid type crunch sounds absolutely fabulous.

      Pedal order rules are largely arbitrary. There are some that are practical such as two transistor fuzzes before anything else, but most of it is bunk.
      Flange your delay trails, put your wah last in the chain, just try stuff, good sound is good sound.

     Basement GAS You just got yourself a like and a sub. I loved the fact that you had different ways of approaching this; I'm fairly new to the guitar, so I'm still getting into WHAT I enjoy playing. Being a massive Tool fan, but with next to no budget, having the option to emulate Adam with plugins really came in handy. It would be nice to have a listen to the cleaner tones, though; think Parabol.

    • @BasementGAS
      @BasementGAS  5 років тому

      Hey Benjamin, thanks for you support and feedback. I was thinking of perhaps doing a follow-up vid on the whole plugin and bias amp solution with and without a DAW and how to setup the hardware part with an audio interface. If that's something you would be interested in if you're just starting off I could help it there. There I could explore the clean tones as well; the cleaner tones were not a major priority as almost 90% of Tool songs have at least a crunch tone ;-)

When I first started playing at 15, I would turn the bass all the way up on my Amp before I knew what I was doing. And don't get me wrong it sounded good on clean lol. I even one time put acoustic strings on my electric bc I couldn't get any lower gauge on my strings lol. We live and we learn right. If you need to sound like Adam Jones, this video makes you realize how much Justin Chancellor's bass sound contributes to it. Especially since he plays bass with a pick with lots of treble that almost sounds like a slap and a bit of overdrive. The first method had too much reverb and delay but it sounded like you were going for the live tone and not the recordings.

    • @BasementGAS
      @BasementGAS  5 років тому +3

      I was stacking the delays. No reverb but I was going more for the live tone. I just love standing there and getting the full blast from the speakers and a massive sounds. You're right, the studio recording would be far less. Doing this video and playing Tool songs by myself really does make you realize how Justin's sounds is just as important and the dynamics he adds to the overall tone.

    idk if its the YT compression but try lowering the gain just a tad bit on the Diezel, i mean by just a tiny tiny amount, play around with it
    might find you get more articulation on your power chords (your tone is super tasty btw) absolutely rockin!

    Anyway .. when I was young I did the same: The 'grind" of his tone is by having very little gain as it applies to bottom end, making it 'flubby' (or whatever Mesa coins it but they at least think about ;.)

    • @BasementGAS

      I think you're right. In a live setting he just smashes the gain up but for recording it's set a lot lower. Tiffany mentioned in the comments that it's around 10 o clock.

    It's not clear what pickup Adam Jones actually used but the Gibson signature lists a Custom-Wound Seymour Duncan DDJ. From what I know, that pickup is essentially the same as an off the shelf Duncan Distortion (SH-6) pickup with a custom winding. I've heard accounts of him using a Seymour Duncan DDL (80s) originally, so I don't know about the JB

    Adams guitar sound is based on the Marshall Base head, or vintage Marshall tube amp can get close to recreating that sound. Listen to their 1992 album live which he plays through one amp, and you will see his tone has not changed much, just been added to. The Vh4 blue stereo amp is the perfect add to his sound. And he has hardly changed his live set up from the aenima tour. He switch out the messa for another Vh4 standard. The key with his sound is the stereo setup, playing 3 amps at once. Lastly his Silver burst les Paul has a special sound that he says keeps him playing them. The tone you have created is very dry. And JCM Marshall apps do go very dry. His base head is very hard to get and modify, but trying the vintage tube amps like the Marshall 1974x hardwired 18W tube amp turned right up to vol 10 will get you close with that wet vintage Marshall sound. Then get a Vh4 amp with a quad and play them in stereo you will see what i mean.

    Just to add some resolution to what you've stated here: the wah is a Dunlop 535 model from the 90s (not the 535q, its predecessor that is no longer made anymore), the Marshall started as a Super Bass but has been modified to Super Lead component values (they are very similar but it would be more accurate to say it's a Super Lead). Also, another resource to list would be Opiateofthemasses here on UA-cam as he's pretty much recreated the rig and tone better than damn near anyone.
    You're right about his use of a volume pedal, but I don't think it's an Ernie Ball. I think it's an optical volume pedal though I'm unsure of the brand.

  • @martindammable
    @martindammable 5 років тому +2

    I think he runs all his pedals in front of the amp(s). That rolling sound of the notes when he bends the string is the same you get with a delay pedal before a overdriven amp. Normally that doesn't go very well, unless you get the amps cooking. I played around with a Mesa Single Rectifier and a 78' Marshall 2150 (the first plexi model to have a master volume), with flanger and delay into a splitter and then the two amps. If you can't feel it shake you, you're not playing loud enough haha. It sounds like you play loud guessing on the feedback, but that's where many fail - gotta crank them amps ;-)

    • @BasementGAS

    Hey man, amazing video! Thank you for all this great information! I am wondering why you used the fat sandwich pedal instead of the VH4 pedal for method number 3? I current use the VH4 pedal with a bass breaker 15, but yours sounds much better. • @BasementGAS
      @BasementGAS  3 роки тому +1

      Back when I made this video the VH4 pedals didn't exist yet. The fat sandwich is great but if you have the VH4 pedal you're going to get closer to the tone. Have you tried running it through the power amp section of the bass breaker?

      @@BasementGAS oh wow, didn't realize this video was that old! So yeah I thought putting the pedal in FX loop would be my best bet for getting the perfect tone, but either I'm stupid or the pedal is defective. Guitar > Pedal input, Pedal output to power amp > Return in the FX loop is giving me 0 distortion and is obnoxiously loud, even at lowest possible settings on guitar and pedal. Running from the clean amp output into the fx loop sounds good, but still stupidly loud for an apartment lol

    • @BasementGAS

    Hey bud, love the content! Would you mind giving me some advice? If I were to record like you did with the 3 amps, and double track it, how would you pan the amps? Should I put the diezel on one side and the Marshall on the other, or should I put both amps into the same side and then track again with both amps and throw that to the other side? I don’t know if that makes sense, but any help would be much appreciated! (Oh, BTW, I just subscribed to the channel)

    • @BasementGAS

      To your question - if you're going to be doing double tracking I personally would pan both amps on one side and then for the second take on the other. Just be sure to taking phasing issues into account. If you're using a signal splitter there will likely be a phase switch in there too. Are you micing up two cabs or doing a DI?

    • @HighVoltageCovers

      Basement GAS I’m getting in the MTS modules game, so the diezel is going to be the VH4 module they put out with Synergy, the Marshall will likely be the Friedman BE or a Plexi module (but I also have a Marshall DSL so it could do the trick as well) that’s going to be DI and then I’ll add impulse responses in the DAW
