I remember being completely illiterate about this band and Schism and this very song clicked for me right away. Especially Ænima because of the lyrics. 😌
Aenima is the pinnicle for both tone and overall production. I love the shades of that evil sounding chorus-type flavor, the chirpy break up of the distortion, the razor sounding crunch of the rhythm tone, even the big delay of the pick scrapes. The ambiance of the album is just artistically spot on, like the whole album was recorded on Halloween under a full moon.
There is a Rig Rundown with his tech.... good vid. His signal chain isnt all that involved, and aside from the Friedman amps most of us can afford it. But you know what they say, tone is in the hands of the player. I really think that Jerry could play a Series 10 guitar into a Peavey Bandit and sound the same. 😉
Marco CB the shows in ‘96 were also a couple hours long. The 96 show was the best show (by any band) I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen Tool 11 times with the 96 show being my first-and it was by far the best. Maynard up front going crazy, plenty of songs off of Ænima, Undertow, and a couple from Opiate.

I've always identified that song's tone as a classic Rectifier tone - the signature near-abrasive Presence, for example, reminiscent of a lot of famous uses of that amp around that time (e.g., in Limp Biscuit). Having had some version of a Recto in the stable for 13 years now, I know it can definitely nail to a "T" that particular tone. Side note: the best Adam Jones guitar tone for me is on the track Jambi. Truly one of the greatest modern tones to date and I think the product of a uniquely inspired spark of creative chemistry between Jones and Baresi... Cheers!

I will continue to watch your channel, even about stuff that doesn't make sense to me. I write those things down in case I need to know about it at a later point in my learning process.
I tried this with Amplitube and got really close. One thing that made a HUGE difference was the pick, since I was playing with a 0.88 Tortex, then switched to a 0.73 and got even closer. I will try a nylon 0.5 mm next.
thanks for all the info, to me the Adam Jones sound was always about how he plays, he likes to mute and play some staccato style riffs, he is precise and very clean and clear and aggressive or very soft, is a unique style and to me is the signature of the sound more than his actual tones.
Hey Ryan, it would be awesome if you could try and re-create Josh Homme's tone on Kyuss' Welcome to Sky Valley, I can ship you a TubeWorks RT-2100 amp to help you out if you'd like.
Adams guitar sound is based on the Marshall Base head, or vintage Marshall tube amp can get close to recreating that sound. Listen to their 1992 album live which he plays through one amp, and you will see his tone has not changed much, just been added to. The Vh4 blue stereo amp is the perfect add to his sound. And he has hardly changed his live set up from the aenima tour. He switch out the messa for another Vh4 standard. The key with his sound is the stereo setup, playing 3 amps at once. Lastly his Silver burst les Paul has a special sound that he says keeps him playing them. The tone you have created is very dry. And JCM Marshall apps do go very dry. His base head is very hard to get and modify, but trying the vintage tube amps like the Marshall 1974x hardwired 18W tube amp turned right up to vol 10 will get you close with that wet vintage Marshall sound. Then get a Vh4 amp with a quad and play them in stereo you will see what i mean.
I owned a mid 90's Epiphone SG and played it with a BOSS metal Zone 2 through an old Canadian made Garnet Amp from the 80s. And I found I could match Adam's Tone, not even knowing what gear he used. I was only 13 when Undertow was released and was still learning how to play. Thanks to Tool and Helmet, I discovered drop D tuning.
Stinkfist was the first song I ever learned to play on guitar with sheet music and tab. Then I learned a couple deftones and tool songs and now I cannot escape the influence Adam Jones has on my playing. That isn’t a bad thing to me as he’s my favorite guitarist. Simple riffs to learn that sound so much more complex all the way up to super hard to learn complex mind bending parts. I’d say Robert fripp and Adam Jones share my number one spot and I look up to them both.
@alan wake Considering the fact that we live in the past, everything is still quiet here. Since the East Coast lives in the future, do you have any juicy nuggets of news for our future?
Friedman was inside....had his hands on Adams Superbass. He says it’s bone stock...no mods. Maybe changed to “Lead Specs”? but stock none the less. Fun video Fluff........thanks for sharing👍
Should've gone with some pre EQ that boosts the high mid and high. The song intro sounds ALMOST like it's been recorded with single coils. I think the Boss EQ does that. Your tone has too much modern tightness and too much mid presence instead of a bit more contour. Also, the Marshall is 100% stock, per his tech (check the dunlop video). This was a tricky one though ;)
The Marshall is a super bass that has been modded to super lead specs. So it has a shared cathode instead of a split cathode and the super bass tonestack. This is per information from Friedman who modded it.
^This. The video in which his tech says "100% stock" was either him being sarcastic or not wanting to spill the beans. Friedman hot-rodded it to essentially super lead specs, as mentioned above.
I got it with an 808, Tri Rec gain low, Bass and Treb half, mid low, Mesa cab with a 441 off center and I added a Phaser on 0. For Fear Inoculum I swapped in a Gold Klon. Thanks Fluff
If you said this, I apologize for missing it... I have a guitar mag interview with Adam from the late ‘90s or early ‘00s where he says that (at least part of) the Marshall mod is jumpering the clean and crunch channels so he can dial a bit of clean into the overall tone. I believe that amp has a separate tone stack for the 2 channels. So that may be “not as much gain as I’m using here” aspect comes in. Just an idea. Having said all that, your recreation is right on. A tiny bit of a clean channel might have a subtle effect but you nailed it.
Question: what cabinet were you using on the Brainworx VH4 plugin? The one on the back when you flip the GUI around from the amp front panel. Excellent video, thanks for sharing! 🍻
Would really love to get a similar video on the 10,000 days tone. Its my personal favorite of all time and I have been forever struggling to get it close. I hope you make a video on it someday!
Could you play the whole song on one of these next time? I was actually hoping to see how you would've approached the middle section (the "learn to swim" part) with the slide and flangey guitar.
I love my UA Audio gear and plug-ins. I love using UA's Studer 800 plug-in to tie everything in a mix together. What tape add-on did you use for this production? It makes sense to use in general but especially for Tool, they still to this day use a Studer 800 for tracking, loves me some UA magic!
Love how you used the Burny man.... It's my absolute favorite LP ever! I'm playing in a Tool Tribute band and have a Diezel VH4 thru Mesa 4x12 and a Hughes Kettner Grandmeister Deluxe (great for the midi options and getting several different AJ-souds) thru an Orange 2x12 (gonna get another Boogie for this one - the Orange Closed back is a tad too dark) and this is a dream setup.
Dude, I would be very happy if you talk about the album's tone: "Zeitgeist" especially the tracks: Doomsday Clock and That's the Way (My Love Is). Ok, I know this is not just the favorite of the crowd but to years do not see a "Fucking heavy tone" as in: "Doomsday Clock" and a crazy solo effects as as: "That's the Way (My Love Is)". Since already a Merry Christmas Fluff and a great new year bro !
When listening to Aenima with headphones it amazed me at how much mono guitars were on that record. They really only stereod the guitars in really epic parts but it sounded huge
I've never heard of a Diezel VH4 plugin amp before this video. That being said I have a large important question. Which amp sim would you choose between the DSP Fortin Nameless Suite or the Universal Audio Diezel VH4 ?? Oh, and the fact Adam was playing a Paul Rivera on a Tool album is cool af.
I have adams entire live rig cloned down to the smallest detail. I know pretty much everything about his rig from every era. Ask any questions you might have.
Adam uses the Diesel for the main overall tone and bass and the mesa/ marshall for pick attack and leads. When he plays leads, the Marshall/ dual rec take over automatically. The Diesel is the real sound.
I know Circle Of Tone tried, and he admitted he failed, to get the Fear Factory tone. I would love to hear a recreation of the tone from Obsolete, especially the track Edge Crusher, which has such a brutal, crushing tone!
Lateralus Would be a cool guitar tone to re-create.
I second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh that.
tbh, Lateralus, 10,000 Days and Fear Inoculum would be good.
I do agree but i still feel like 10000 days is like the best guitar sound i have ever heard

I didn't understand anything you said but Pinky is chillin' in the back.
MESA and Marshall amp setting pls. trying to replicate on AXEFX with dual amps
How do you get or recreate the drum track to these songs?
Nice video! Just curious on what bass you used of the song???
Great video, and thank you for pronouncing Ænima correctly.
i think you nailed it, and i have listened to that album more than any other album in my life, very very close to the og tone
I know this is an older video, but your playing is really great dude
Hey, thanks!
tool for Christmas.. and a baritone obsessed T .. does it get any better? .. just need fluff to pull out the 28” baritone :)
It’s a Christmas miracle! Thanks for this.🙏
Dude, I would be very happy if you talk about the album's tone: "Zeitgeist" especially the tracks: Doomsday Clock and That's the Way (My Love Is).
Which amp sim would you choose between the DSP Fortin Nameless Suite or the
Universal Audio Diezel VH4 ?? Oh, and the fact Adam was playing a Paul Rivera on a Tool album is cool af.
I have adams entire live rig cloned down to the smallest detail. I know pretty much everything about his rig from every era. Ask any questions you might have.
Which model epilady do you find works best?
Which kemper profile do u use
John Yeo i got all real hardware
What bridge pickup does Adam use?
@@mattthebat41 80s-90s seymour duncan ddj
Soundgarden please!!
yessss
Here’s a tone fluff should recreate: Jason Richardson’s tone from Chelsea Grin’s Evolve EP
Awesome Video! Throwing another vote in for anything Mastodon
Did i miss where he talked about what Cab IR he used for the Diezel? And the other amps as well, in case i miss it again
Adam uses the Diesel for the main overall tone and bass and the mesa/ marshall for pick attack and leads. When he plays leads, the Marshall/ dual rec take over automatically. The Diesel is the real sound.
Were you the one recreating this at NAMM? I saw something very similar to this.
On Fear Inoculum, for those who care, Adam Jones often used an Abominable Electronics Hellmouth pedal to tighten and overdrive this amps.
I thought i would never see someone like you rock a old Burny, let alone anyone theses days.
Burnys are awesome! My number one is a black mij custom with VH1 pickups. I looove it.
Any idea how he gets the chorus type sound on that album? I’ve seen a boos flange but also wondering if it’s just the delay too...
Combination of DD3 and Boss Flanger.
Are you using a mic’d cab with those amps?
Very nice, Fluff!
You more or less nailed it buddy; well done.
Nice shirt!
I know Circle Of Tone tried, and he admitted he failed, to get the Fear Factory tone. I would love to hear a recreation of the tone from Obsolete, especially the track Edge Crusher, which has such a brutal, crushing tone!
How do you get a hold of those drum tracks and or bass tracks? Are they stems? Or do you download files from somewhere or do you create them?
What made you use the Burny instead of one of your Gibsons?
Merry Christmas!!!!
Does that JCM 800 have a gray front grill?
