This was the computer we had when I was a kid. I miss it.
My boyfriend found a Performa 636cd while helping a friend clear previous owners stuff out a new house and I've been trying desperately to open it up to clean the decades of dirt out. This video was a major help! Now to find a power cord & monitor...
Thanks for the amazing reviews. Apple and Macintosh users/enthusiasts ,as well as anyone interested in computing and history really appreciate it!
Just picked up an LC630. The battery was starting to get slimy on the top but thankfully no apparent leakage on the board yet. Mine's had the 68040 replacement too. Really lucked out with this one.
I totally dig these videos. I became a Mac user way back in 1991 when my Mom brought home an LCII. Then we got a Performa 575, and a lime green iMac. When I bought my own 1st Macintosh, I bought a PowerMac 6500 in '97 and fully hot rodded it with every option available, and then replaced it with a QuickSilver G4, and finally the '13 iMac and MacBook Air models I use today.
I'm tempted to fire up the 6500 just to play Lunatic Fringe (After Dark module/game). It is now sporting a 500 Mhz G3, 128 MB RAM, 60 GB HD, MOTU PCI audio card, Apple TV/FM card, CD/CDRW optical drive etc... I might do a full install of OS 7.6.1 which it seemed to like the best.
+Jeremy Mitchell Also, does anybody know if it's possible to upgrade the 6500 with an SSD? I still have an available PCI slot for a SATA controller card if that's what it takes. I might have to call OWC on this one, but some of their techs are clueless with a machine this old. I just loved it and used it daily for 7-8 years.
Does the 6500 have a G3/G4 upgrade that'll let it run Mac OS X? Because I'm almost certain that unless you're an amazing reverse engineer, it's gonna be nigh-impossible to get Mac OS 9 drivers for a SATA PCI card.
I am continually astonished about the company's penny pinching ways in the 90's and how they got a 68020 PDS slot working on nearly all pre-PPC Macs!
Thanks for the video: very good job!
As a guy who's used Windows/Linux PCs all his life, the fact that you have to do ALL OF THIS just to take the PC apart is just jaw-dropping. "Think different" indeed!
That being said, for every bizarre choice apple has made, there's always been something about them that I've found interesting.
i literally snapped the cd tray removal plastic piece as you did in the video.. oh if i'd only watched the full video before.. lol.. but it can stay in anyway.. kinda relieved it's IDE.. really didn't want to have to buy a $$$ SCSI2SD card again..
I’m trying like hell to update my Performa 635 a bit, and I figured out from the front how to drop in my adapter to put in an SSD, but the video card is giving me issues and I’ll be damned if I could figure out how to get to it. This video was insanely helpful, thank you so much.
the heat sink thing is funny I would think it would have one my old mac performa 600 cd has a 68030 and that has a heatsink glued to it
Thanks Jason for the good review I finally know how to take my lc630 apart lol
meow00000000 Glad I could help! You can see how difficult it is to take the LC630 apart!
It would be great(Insanely Great) if you kept doing this reviews and cover some Macintoshes like the iMac G3, PowerMac G5, etc. The quality of your videos is incredibly hight and well organized. There have never been reviews of such quality and depth of most of the machines you covered and you content is very remarkable indeed.
I had a Quadra 630 when I was 14 circa 1996 and totally forgot about how the front panel on mine never stayed on until I saw those exposed drives again.
I can confirm you're right about the blinking plates, as my Performa 6200CD has the optional video input card installed. I do appreciate the explanation of how to tear it down.
As already suggested, you should review the later model (G3, G4, G5) PPC Macs. That's where I specialize the most (I have over a dozen different models), and in case I decide to do the odd teardown your video would be much help.
Timur Tripp Good point - I don't have many G3 / G4 Macs, but I will do a video on one of them very soon.
i'm getting the tv tuner/AV cards for my 6200cd
So, this was 7 years ago not expecting any answer, but; is it possible today to find any conversor of that printer port to usb?
I have a 638 performance. Is there a monitor currently available that would work with this computer?
you have to unscrew and remove that metal cover below the floppy drive for the cd drive to come out
11:25 to get to the disassembly
The Sierra chip, code-named "Valkyrie", is the VESA video chip.
The 68LC040s run quite a bit cooler than the full 040, that may explain the lack of heatsink.
robivy64 Very true - I don't think I have seen an LC040 with a heatsink.
This was my first Macintosh, and I used it for years till I got an XP Machine in 2002 and the video output failed on this one. I only recently got back into Macs when I started to play around with PowerPC based Macs and MorphOS, as well as OS9.
***** Good to see that you are getting back into retro Macs! Do you plan to build up a collection of your own?
Most of my Macs are post 2000. I'd like to get some of the older ones, but I was able to track down a Color Classic last weekend. I haven't attempted looking for macs because well...they are uncommon in my area. If it's not a PC, I likely won't find it. I was lucky enough to find a boxed Vic 20, and an Atari 130 XE, but other than that...nada.
I'd like to see a tour video of the Performa 6200 series. I had a slightly higher model, and despite having a 75 MHz 603 PPC processor, it was S-L-O-W. I think the Power Mac 6100/60 with its 60 MHz 601 actually outperformed it. I've always wondered how exactly Apple crippled that system to make it so slow. Maybe it was just the nature of the 603, a low-power CPU model?
Incidentally, I also noticed that the lever design for the back was altered a bit from this model to mine; mine have a thin wire type that runs almost the entire width of the board, enabling a grip with all fingers for easier pulling.
Yeah, the 603 was a disappointment. The later 603e was a much better processor.
To be clear, the 603 is a 32-bit CPU. I guess you're referring to the bus, Zack?
The 603 PPC also suffered from a too-small cache until the 603e.
How far do you plan on going with this series?
bates d1123 I plan to do a video on each and every Mac that I have in my collection - looks like I am only about one quarter of the way through!
My Performa 636 has no trouble working with my 40GB Fujitsu hard disk.
Is this the same as a Performa 630CD? That's what I have...
Yes; different configuration (RAM, hard drive, etc.) but overall the same model, with the 680LC40 processor.
I got this yestrday, but i think I have Dead PSU, i want replace with atx modify.
***** You can do that, but you may have difficulty finding an ATX supply that will fit in place of the original.
I opened my quardra 630 and same thing as in the video no heatsink and everything is the same as your board so someone must have swaped it in your system.
Even though you mostly do pcs could you PLEAS do a rewiew of the sony watchman mega df510. Im planning on getting one but there is no other rewiew of it. PPLLEEAASS
I just ordered it........JAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY :D......But it would still be awsome with a rewiew :D
TheProGamer At the moment, I am focusing my channel on Apple Mac PCs - but when I have done them all, who knows what I will move to next!
Im exited to see what the duture will bring.........but when that time comes could you dcome back to this then?
Recently got one of these, complete and working for only 30 euros haha.
I killed my 630DOS days ago, I am totally sad about that. I get no "gong" and the display stays black. I don't know what went wrong :(((((
That happened to me a couple years ago. :(
Were you ever able to fix it?
I've been wanting to take another nostalgia trip on my Performa 630CD, but it shut off one day after opening a now suspicious photo and never would come back on. :,(
My Performa 636 suffers terribly from brittle plastic; the front of the case is being held on with sticky tape!
Just picked up one of these for €25
The cd-rom drive bent your screwdriver.
jake harvey Yes - but I can always get more screwdrivers!
SOY
This is hilarious! Between your bent tools, poor technique and general lack of skill, I am laughing at you. Not sure that's what you were going for, but, thank for the jolly's.
