I remember when my classroom got a fleet of these Power Mac 5300 All-In-ones. Our school collected so many box tops from food products to help pay for them.

Man, I remember zillions of these being in the computer labs when I was in school in the late 90s. We freaked out when they were replaced by the iMacs around 2000-2002.

Macs, in general, were a solid four years ahead of PCs at pretty much any point in their mutual history, but the hardware, in the mid 90s, had more missteps than successes. Part of the reason Apple was circling the drain in the 90s. It’s really only with Windows 10 do I think PCs have “caught up” to Macs, finally. They were first to one important feature: preemptive multitasking, but Windows’ piss-poor memory protection meant that kind of didn’t matter. The gains they made in stability over cooperative multitasking were immediately lost to their almost complete lack of protected memory. Took them until XP to nail that one down.

Nice video! I always thought the "Director's Edition" were the black 5400/5500s. Never knew a beige Director's Edition existed too, at least here in Europe. I have a black 5500/275 Director's Edition from 1998, the last consumer all-in-one Macintosh before the iMac was released.

Man, the Performa X200/X300 STILL haunt my nightmares! I worked for Apple when these things came out. They weren't recalled, per se, but had a 'Repair Extension Program' where Apple repaired them, on site, as parts became available. It took years...

Thanks for this wonderful video, and lots of great background there and a real blast from the past. Looking forward to part 2! I never knew about the plethora of problems associated with the Performa. I loved it all the way - then again I was 8 when we got mine, so I wasn't exactly a discerning power user at the time, and happy enough that it could run a few games! :)
Your Performa 5300 now also has a few new battle scars to tell of its moment in the spotlight ;)

Happen to have a 5500/225 here, which uses this same footprint, and for whatever reason, I'm glad that you showed that the CD-ROM is accessible through the front, as opposed to grabbing it through the rear as on most Macintosh models prior to the 5xxx Series. I was basically attempting to realign the CD-ROM drive, since it would not open, it tried to, but always butted up against the cavity in the bezel...but doing so, I'm glad you warned about the brittle plastic. The front panel of the CD-ROM drive just completely snapped off, but at least the tray opens. Not sure how to repair that now, however. But...let's just hope that it will be able to read and use CD-ROMs, now that I have Mac OS 8.1 ordered on eBay to clean install on it.

I saw this machine used at a car dealer ship, but not in the booth, but back in the shop :p this same performa :D it wasn't beige though, it was black, but not like the macintosh tv, black from the guys that operated this machine to perform various tasks :p you could see all their finger prints on that poor thing! It had a rough life, and that was in 2002 that i saw this machine still being used by those people! I dont know exactly for what they wer using that, maby for the car diagnostics or something! The only thing that you surely could see was that colorfull apple logo, it must have a anti-grease layer or something. Great video jason! You should make more! You are so underrated!

I found out something recently that I never knew, the first prototype for this computer was called the Quadra 580, and the second prototype was called the LC 720. I assume these were based around the 68040 and 68LC040, respectively, instead of the 603.

When I was in the 4th grade in 2004, my elementary school still had this style of Mac AIOs in our computer labs, although I suspect they were models newer than this one if they lasted all the way into the early years of the '00s. I remember playing KidPix EVERY SINGLE TIME we got the privilege to use 'em, and they were pretty speedy if my recollection is right, although at the time, I would've had no idea about performance.
Unfortunately, they were on the way out as it was the last time I used a Mac in a lab or really any other setting in school. Spent the rest of my time until I graduated in 2012 using Dell OptiPlex PCs and using Windows 2000/XP until I left school.
Wish I knew what model of PowerMac AIO they were so I could try to hunt one down.

The Powerbook 5300 series did have a slightly faster version available in the 5300ce, which ran at 117MHz. They did both suffer from the lack of L2 cache, but at least the Powerbook version had better bus handling than the LC/Performa 5300's.

You forgot to mention that the later series 54XX and 5500 completely solved all the shortcomings of the 52XX and 53XX, with perhaps the exception of the monitor, which I still found pretty good by the standards of that time. I had owned a 5400 and 5500, upgraded both to G3 processors and I used them as my main computers from 2001-2004. They were really nice and useful machines, likely my favorite pre-iMac Apple computers honestly.

    • @themacintoshmuseum
      @themacintoshmuseum  9 років тому

Wonderpierrot You are correct - the 54XX and 55XX series had a completely different internal architecture that did not have the compromises that the earlier models did. I do have a 5400/180 (the black Director's Edition), and I will be talking about the improvements that these machines had when I do a video on that model.

The 5400/5500 series only has enough room for one PCI slot, so you would likely need to use a 1 slot PCI riser instead of the 2 on the 6400/6500 series. I owned a 5400/5500 and 6500, swapped components around all the time without issues.

jake harvey I had the 5300 (as in this video) and the major benefit to it was that the only alternative to it AFTER it came out, was the 5200 or 6200, for several months. So if you had one of these 400 units, you had a machine faster, better CD-ROM and with video input + TV tuner as standard. Quite amazing, really, for most of 1996.

the new macs suck compared to the mac computers of the 1990s and early 2000s my favorite mac os was the mac os 8.1 after that they started heading down hill... and my favorite model was the power mac g3 it was the last of the actual good mac line, that was before apple's too simple design... you don't get what you pay for these days, they takes out almost all standard peripherals and CD-ROMs/dvd-roms and replace it with crappy underpowered hardware and software, I will never by a imac 2011-20xx machine in my entire life, the new mac is for stupid people who don't know a good deal from a bad deal (apple) it started with there iphone back in late 2006 and basically said to Microsoft, "I don't think you deserve a billion dollar industry, so I'm going to make you bankrupt because you were better than me in the 1990s so I am going to lie and over excaudate about Microsoft, so you'll look bad", that was jobs whole plan since day one, he got mad because he treated his employees bad in the 80s and thinks he and tim cook, and jony ive can ruin the pc world, his company needs to suck it up and deal with it and stop making android look so bad!
