    Fourty years later, i miss my Mac SE.
    Event hough I probably have several of them in the barn that were not mine... not to mention clones of it... like Classic and Classic IIs.
    A 25mghz 030 card went in my expansion slot. The great leap forward with the SE was ADB and Appletalk and the internal 20mb harddrive (17mb). My first harddrive. 60ms access time, slow as snail splt! The arm moving mechanism was actually on the OUTSIDE of the drive and ou could stick your finger in it and interfere with it if you were being a j3rk..
    The back of the SE is still IMHO the sexiest back of any computer I have ever seen in my life and I've seen a lot of them...
    I gave my SE away to my cousin, but I still have the original motherboard hanging on my wall as lightning blew out the ADB ports, so I had to buy a rereplacementand installit myself which was a PITA. I then jumped to a Performa 476 pizza box 040 at 25mghz.
    Steve Jobs was adament against noisy fans int eh mac, and that's whyt he first models did not have fans in them... and they are indeed nice and quiet, except for the grinding of the floppy drive which pretty much ruined any silence.

    I own one of these with a hard drive and i must say... The SE is one of the greatest macintoshes of all time. It took the 68000 processor used in all other macs and showed its true potential free of many of the setbacks of the earlier macintoshes. A hard drive, expandability, compatible with system 6 and earlier versions of system 7. Had plenty of memory and users no longer needed to worry about the miserable amount of memory and expandability in early macs. It is truly in the top 10 greatest apple products of all time. And its also beautiful in appearance. An iconic mac. I remember it everytime i watch seinfeld. One issue is maybe the floppy disk but you could easily turn an se into an se

    We had a Macintosh SE a long time ago but it was much slower than this, and the hard drive was much louder.

    And now my SE is chugging along quite nicely with 4MB of RAM so i should enable that too :)

    Is it okay to leave in the battery for the clock if you use the Macintosh daily?

    Since you have 4 MB of RAM, you should enable MultiFinder… Do this by clicking Special, then Set Startup.

      Good point - I am so used to using System 7 that I forgot about the MultiFinder feature in System 6!

    My macintosh se makes signs of booting but the crt does not show at all. Could this be a capacitor leak or a bad connection?

    Is it possible to install an internal 1.44 disk drive on a standard SE?

    • @themacintoshmuseum
      @themacintoshmuseum  10 років тому +1

      Sapp440 I believe that you can - but you need to change the floppy controller chip, and the ROM chip. You would have to get those from an SE SuperDrive / FDHD.

    One of the floppy drives in my SE is starting to fail - should I replace it or get a hard drive?

    Imagine if the iPhone SE stood for system expansion.

      Ethan Whitmer Repairing old hard disks can be difficult - you would probably be better off trying to find a replacement SCSI drive. Any half-height 3.5 in SCSI drive that uses the standard 50 pin SCSI interface will work in an SE.
