    Thanks Becky, after a very trying 18 months of family problems, I am treating myself to Jen Kingwell's 'A Wild Ride'. Hand sewing, I hope will relax me, help me move on, and return my sewing mojo that seems to have wandered off.

      The mojo will return. This is what is true for me: when I sit down at night, I pick up my sewing and turn on something on to 'watch' while I sew. Some nights I sew faster, some slower, but I always have it in my hands. Consistency makes a big difference for me. Enjoy your sewing!

    Thanks for the best tutorial about hand piecing I've seen. One thing that I've been curious about is, after done with hand piecing, do we have to do something to the raw edges on the wrong side to keep them from fraying? In sewing, there are many types of seam finishes, but it seems like for hand piecing, all we need to do is pressing the seam allowance to one side?

    • @BeckyGoldsmith
      @BeckyGoldsmith  Рік тому

      Thank you so much for your kind words? To answer your question there is no need to treat the raw edges with anything. You don't in machine piecing and this is very similar. Happy stitching!

    Thank you for this video. I am an inexperienced sewing person. I’m trying to hand sew a film reel strip with photos which will be approximately 4.5 x5.5. I’m also thinking a 1/4 inch black sashing between 1 inch white blocks for the black and white reels (yes really really ambitious) I spent the entire day yesterday practicing with no success. I think because I was sewing right across the blocks, and I wasn’t sure in which direction to press the seams. Do you have any tips for me please. Thank you.

      I have way more tips than fit in a reply. Watch the video linked to below. And you can consider my book, Hand Sewing, that includes instructions on hand piecing. If you want to stick with free videos on UA-cam, just keep looking around until you find the information that suits your particular project. When it comes to pressing seam allowances, my general rule is to press in one direction toward the darker fabric. I hope this helps... stick with it!

    is the only difference between hand piecing and EPP, the paper? :-) Ive fallen in love with the fusible papers that is water soluble and now after tackling that, hand piecing doesn’t really seem impossible anymore. Just wanted to know the differences. Thx :-)

    • @BeckyGoldsmith
      @BeckyGoldsmith  4 роки тому +1

      The stitch is different because in hand piecing the seam allowances are not folded over. You sew with a running stitch. In EPP the seam allowance is basted over the paper and you whip stitch the folded edges together. You end up with hand-sewn seams, but they do look different.
      In many cases, hand piecing is faster. But there are shapes that just look better when sewn using EPP. Once you try both, you'll see what I mean. Let me know if you have other questions :-).

    I really want to hand piece but the idea of drawing lines on all my pieces is daunting. Any ideas or suggestions?

    • @BeckyGoldsmith
      @BeckyGoldsmith  5 років тому +7

      You can try eye-balling the seam allowance, but that's way less accurate.
      Here's the thing: hand-piecing is as much about taking your time and enjoying the process as it is about making a quilt. The drawing is one part of the process. What I do is set aside time for it, usually in the evening when I'm listening to TV (watching TV is hard when you are looking at your sewing).

      When I hand piece I don't usually draw lines, but I do draw dots for my start/stop point. If you know the line between the two dots is supposed to be straight, it's not too hard to eyeball where it belongs.
      Another suggestion is to perhaps look into English Paper Piecing. Because the paper templates are there to be your guide, you don't really have to draw any lines at all, and your seam allowances do not have to be accurate either. It's a very simple and fun way to piece, and probably more foolproof than loose hand piecing.

      @Quilter1977 5 років тому +3

      It doesn't take that long, and you can be fiendishly accurate with your piecing. It also means it doesn't matter if your cutting wasn't dead on, as it's the sewing lines that really matter. Try it and see how you get on.
      Jinny Beyer is a famous hand quilter who marks dots at the corners and eyeballs the 1/4". You can try that too. She's not as dead accurate as some of us are, but then some of us are really picky about this, and she's certainly as accurate as most machine piecers.
      I've recently taken up improv piecing, and for that you don't need the same level of accuracy. So I mark dots at the corners and eyeball the line. It's taken me a bit of practice to be able to do the 1/4" by eye, and it probably helps that I've been staring at 1/4" seam allowances for years while piecing the usual way.
      EPP is much slower than hand piecing and involves more prep. So I wouldn't go for that purely to save time, but you can try it if you like, as some people really love the process.
