Probably the most informative video I've ever watched! There's no filler, just loads of information that will help you begin applique with confidence. The close-ups make a huge difference too. Thank you, Becky!
Your tutorials are based on the fact that the listener knows nothing, so they are perfect, nothing is left to guess about, there are so many lessons given by others that are so far away you can't tell what they are doing, and they don't cover everything. Thank you so much Becky, you are a treasure.
11 Years ago this video was posted, but today in January 2024, I am watching and this is a fantastic explanation of why my needles are bent, why my applique bunches.... thank you SO MUCH for posting this video. You are really gifted at explaining this. Thank you for helping me and so many others, I'm sure.
I'm glad you found me and that this video is helpful! It is 11 years old but has aged well. Since then I've recorded a lot more and have online classes but the stitch never changes... because it works! Happy stitching, Becky
This is THE BEST tutorial I've come across in the quilting world, ever. Beautiful production value, precise explanations shown nice and slowly - this is perfectly done. Thank you for sharing this with us!
I'm Panamanian and took a very basic workshop on how to make molas and the instructor didn't explain how to make the invisible stitches. She showed us a very short video of a Guna Indian sewing a mola but it was in real time and she was sewing fast, like the professional she is. My stitches are horrible so I decided to search on YT and I'm so glad I found your video. Thank you for teaching this and for the clear zoomed in videos showing the technique and the stitches. I'm saving this video as reference.
I love love love the way your close ups show everything. After viewing this I am certain I can do applique. Thank you for your instructions and time you put into helping others learn.
Love your video on needle turning. I have seen so many and did not learn a thing. I have always wanted to do a hawaiin quilt but now i think i can jump right in si nce i saw your video. Thanks soooooo mucn. Janet from ohio
Wow! You are an amazing teacher! I love how you explain the details of how to hold the needle and how to make the perfect stitch. I also love that you not only tell people 'how' to do something, but you also tell them 'why' you do it that way. Your attention to detail is amazing. These are the kinds of things people really need to know in order to create beautiful art. I also really love how you use your hands to explain the needle's path. What a great visual! I'm thinking that every one who watches your video will think of your instructions every time they watch their own hands make each stitch. Very well done! And thank you so much for sharing your expertise with us. You have a great way of explaining things in such and easy to understand way. Very, very well done! Thank you for making this video.
Thank you for sharing the second way of stitching. It is the way I stitch, and others have insisted I was wrong for stitching this way. I am so glad to have found a teacher. Thank you for helping me be free to create beautiful things in my own way.
I almost didn't watch this because I thought 21 minutes was too long. But the name "piece of cake" lured me in. At about the 5 minute mark I thought, "I gotta take a break, maybe I will finish it later." Later, when I got to the the 11 minute mark (and it seemed like about 2 minutes to get there), I thought, "this woman really knows her stuff!" By the end, I was glad I hung in there because I have a much fuller understanding of the structure of the stitch (and why it is or is not correct the way I have done it) but also some of the body mechanics that will or won't serve me over time (very important at my age!).
Hi Laurie: I'm glad you did hang in there! I have tried to make this shorter, but it's really hard to be complete in a minute or two :-). Good luck with your stitching!
Becky, thank you tremendously. Your teaching style with rationales is superb! I have been searching for days for a step by step guide to needle turn applique.
Becky, I'm back watching the best most detailed video for hand applique ever!! I'm getting better each time and owe it to you. Thank you and hope you and yours are well.
I would say this is probably the best needle turn appliqué tutorial I've seen. And I've watched many to learn how to do this. Thank you for the zooming in!
Thank you, God! An excellent tutorial with perfect closeups. I'm still hunting for something similar for crocheting. I can't ever see the stitches well enough to know if I am doing it properly. This is awesome. Thank you so much.
Great comprehensive video! I never would have thought about how I hold my needle. Thanks for a way that doesn't need any extras, like webbing or freezer paper.
The detailed information you have provided is the best I have found! Being new to applique I appreciate the specific information about the stitches, how to hold the needle and even the camera close ups are incredibly helpful! So many other videos I have watched really skip this pertinent information. Thank you so much!
So happy that now my points and inner points are so pretty. Thanks again. Who would have thought a toothpick and some patting and dragging and pulling would be the trick?. Love it.
I will soon be starting my first applique project where I think machine stitching is just too casual. This was the perfect place to start learning needle-turn! Thanks!
Thank youBecky - this is exactly what I was needing to learn for my project. So well explained and camera work is great. I look forward to reviewing your other tutorials.
You explained this so well. Thank you!!!! I wish I was able to take in person classes with you. You are a fantastic teacher. I'm so impressed with how you are able to break down each action into understandable parts. Thank you again :)
Thank you so much. While I have neat, invisible stitches I regularly bend and then break needles! I have been doing needle turn applique for nearly ten years and I've had to buy a heck of a lot of needles! No more! Thankyou again.
Absolutely loved your presentation, very informative, very clear voice, and would love to take a class of yours sometime. Great job, I liked and subscribed so I will be watching more of your videos. Thanks for posting....
Wow.. You really do learn something new everyday :) I'm self taught at sewing and crafting and have got by doing it many ways for the last 13 years. But this only took as couple of minutes to grasp holding the needle the way you do and doing applique has just become so much easier. THANK YOU
Becky Goldsmith Yes, in the best way. If only I had this teaching years ago my efforts would have been more excellent. I can now be more excellent due to your instruction. Well worth the time. Thanks for your diligence.
This video was exactly what I needed to see. I am starting my first applique project and this has helped me more than any other video I have seen. Thank you so much! I feel like I can do this!!!
Your instructions are so marvelous. Thank you! I have watched most of your tutorials and seen you on the quilt show and love your help. I have learned so much!
This is an excellent tutorial. I can tell you put a lot of thought into all that you wanted to share. Thank you so much for all of the information. I am trying to learn so much prior to attempting my first applique quilt. It's so much better to do it right the first time!
Merciiiii pour ce partage ! 💕 vos explications sont formidables. Je suis de Tahiti où nous faisons des "Tifaifai", inspirés du peintre Matisse venu dans les années 40 en Polynésie Française.
Thank you! And you know what? You could always take one of my online classes. In many ways, they are better than in person because the instructions are close up and detailed AND you can watch as many times as you want to! You can find my classes here: creativespark.ctpub.com/pages/Becky_Goldsmith
Thank you, Becky! I know this is an older video of this, but it's perfect! I don't remember how I did it before but it wasn't anything like your wonderful techniques. Easy to use and beautiful work! I have to give you credit on my work because of your technique! Thank you, Thank you! You are a Special Lady! ❤️🤗🧵✂️
Thanks Becky, your explenation is so clear that I could follow the instruction from the begin till the end, Even though my English is not so good. Thank you very much. 10ekequilt
Superior's Masterpiece off the prewound bobbins. 100% cotton, 50wt/2-ply. It is a 3-ply thread off of the spool or cone. You can buy 2 sets, each with 25 different colors, on my site.
I wonder if this technique would be a better stitch to use on joining hexies for a quilt. I use basting needles and they are always bent after the first few stitches joining my hexies. Thank you for logically and visually showing me how to correct my poor stitching techniques.
Finally, a video for newbies where there is an actual close up of how it is done. Thank you so much !
You're very welcome!

The best Applique video I've watched so far Becky❤What thread do you normally use for Applique work?
Superior's Masterpiece off the prewound bobbins. 100% cotton, 50wt/2-ply. It is a 3-ply thread off of the spool or cone. You can buy 2 sets, each with 25 different colors, on my site.

Very helpful video. I notice that the pointed tips of some of the pins are exposed, they can hurt the fingers.
What does a left handed person do? What direction should I go.Doris
