On March 22, 2024, I did a late shift Parks on the Air activation(#POTA) in the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor (US-6532) in WNY. I operated QRP SSB with 10 Watts on the ICOM 705 with the mAT-705 tuner. For the antenna, I used the Reliance Antennas End-Fed Random Wire (EFRW) 9:1 with a 41-foot element and a 17-foot counterpoise. #HamRadio

I purchased the 1:1 choke from Tim N9SAB, who also makes great antennas. He has online stores at eBay and Etsy.

Wow ! You are a dedicated ham out in that cold weather.
I am ready for spring weather now though, LOL. Thanks for watching!
Good job Mike!
Thanks, Tim!
I used a 41' POTA / WFD with the LDG 9:1 vertical with radials. It worked great. Just started messing around with 29' wire. Glad that you had success.
I've had great success with a 29' wire. I think that's a sweet spot for 20m and up, but it works alright on 30 and 40m too. I'll be trying some longer lengths to see what's good for the lower bands.
Great video
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!
Well done! 84’ has worked well for me operating portable. 35’ too.
Nice! Did you use a 17' counterpoise with the 84' random wire?
@@MikeN2MAK yes. This combination was discovered through trial and error by W3EDP in the 1930s. There’s a QST article about it called the Unorthodox Antenna. I connected the elements directly to my tuner (no feedline, no balun, etc) and ran QRP power.
Likely be giving that one a try soon too. I’ve use a 71’ one a few times for 80m and it’s worked well. Thanks!
I like that winder, but I may be biased :)
That's what I thought, LOL. I finally got around to using the winders I got from you and I like them!
A 7? We call it an inverted “L” here in New Hampshire
Maybe I'm trying working on a sponsorship with Seagrams, LOL. I'm going to call it a "Tipsy 7" instead on the "Inverted L."
See you do hang out on 7.200
My son W2BMK and I accidentally did a POTA activation on 7.200 early on. Fortunately, we didn't have any issues, but an Elmer emailed me that night and explained, LOL.
Too bad it’s only good for short contacts
I haven’t had a chance to using it on higher bands during the day yet, but I’m sure it’ll do fine on 20m and other high bands for DX.
inverted L
Thanks! I don’t know why my brain wasn’t working, since I’ve heard that term before. I think because when I’ve done an inverted L before, there was a much longer horizontal section.
Yeah, they recommend running the vertical section and horizontal section to be about the same length. However, it will work either way if one’s longer than the other. Are used to have one set up at my QTH a while back. I even have tried a 41 foot Vertical i used coiled around a 12 m spider beam mast with a 17ft counterpoise and a 9:1 unun. Tuned everything from 80 through 10, with a tuner.
