Nice work Walt, stay warm 👍
Thanks Ape!
It's fun to see all the weirdness and variety that works as antennas. Hope we get a QSO once you're back over to Europe again
Thanks, I'm looking forward to that QSO!
Good Video Walt, love experimenting with antennas 73 KV5P
You and me both!
Tim makes awesome antennas!
Yes he does!
Well done Walt...Thanks😀😀😀
Thank you!
Glad you had fun, that's all that matters!!
Thank you!
Nice experiment Walt! Looks like you had fun. Nice to get away from that local noise!
Thanks! Yes it was a blast
Excellent experiment Walt. Keep up the great work.
Thank you my friend!
Awesome video Walt! Thats a great idea and im glad you had good results from it.
Thank you! It was a fun experiment
Vertical centre fed doublet is unusual. Interesting and thanks for posting.
Thanks for watching!
MY BUDDY JUST TOLD ME TO WATCH THIS VIDEO. HRO SELLS A MINI G5RV AS WELL NOT AS COOL AND LIGHT WEIGHT AS YOUR BUDDIES. REALLY COOL SET UP. THANKS AS ALWAYS FOR THE FUN CONENT. 73
Nice, some of my POTA locations do not have much of antenna setup options, that ground mount looks great for my QRPGuys 3-band 40-20M vertical when there are no trees, and want to keep the antenna away from folks parking nearby to keep from tripping over the wires. An Inverted-V from two Hamsticks or Sharksticks might be a good option for that portable setup as well. Thanks for the ideas! 72 es 73, Davey - KU9L
Thanks Davey, all the best and good DX! Walt K4OGO
Enjoyed it. I have a couple of Tim's antennas as well. At my request, he customized them for the CW portion of the band for each antenna, which is fantastic service in my opinion, and the build quality is great. I saw a video recently where someone asked, "Is that a Tim Ortiz?" You know you are doing great work when your products are known by your name. I lived out there for years when I was a squid at NAS Oceana. My wife and I enjoyed visiting the shops and restaurants around Portsmouth harbor, especially during the holidays. I miss the area a lot. Thanks Walt. 73
Thanks Pat! Yes Tim is great! 73
Excellent video! Just shows how well a doublet works. 73
Thanks Tim, it performed as well as I thought it would for sure.
Hey Walt. Works really well! Nice job! 73!
Thank you!
Nice one Walt, interesting way of using a G5RV, shall give it a try when it's much warmer weather.
Thank you Adam
I've been intrigued by this antenna when I saw it on Tim's eBay page recently. Nice job testing it in a unique configuration getting contacts on all the bands. 73
Thanks for watching!
Pretty cool Walt.
Thanks for watching!
Always thought a vertical dipole would have awesome angles for DX but also wanted multi band. Looks like you found my ideal small antenna. 73 de WB3CFN 😊
That’s exactly what I was thinking!
Hey UW, it's going to get misrable cold here again thru the whole next Week. BUT...with more hours of Sunshine than last Week. That means "more Play Time for YFUG" G5RV is one of my Favourite Antennas for sure. Nice Video K4OGO, you rock 💯🔔🔔🔔👍🙋♂
Thank you so much UG!!!
Walt, love the channel. It's really interesting to see different antennas tried in different ways in different locations....It's different...lol. This one worked better than I was expecting. I've never been a huge fan of the G5RV, but they do work and many people like them. Looking forward to future videos with other antennas. Your channel is so much better than the "This antenna company sent an antenna for free channels. Let's set it up. Hey, it works great, look, I made a few contacts with 10 over 9 stations. You can buy one at...." There is a word for people who do these kinds of videos. 73 Walt, keep up the great content !
Thank you so much John!
Hadn't thought about using one vertical. That worked out well.
Yes it actually did better than I expected
Great fun Walt, on my LDG tuners I disable full auto mode to stop it trying to retune mid QSO - brilliant tuners though :)
Thanks Stuart! Yes, I need to start doing that. I've had that issue.
Nice one Walt! Experimentation is the essence of Ham radio. Two things, I don't see any choke or 1:1 balun in the antenna kit, maybe you were getting some RF back to the radio that was causing your audio issues. Also, I guess you could say that the ladder line in the G5RV is being used in lieu of a transformer to match or improve the impedance of the antenna to 50 ohms. Following that line of thought, I wonder if you could use ladder line instead of the 4:1 unun on your favorite Rybakov antenna. Or maybe use the ladder line to feed a random wire vertical with an equal-length raised counterpoise, giving you something that is a little easier to deploy. Who knows! Maybe I'll fiddle with that in the back yard one day. 73
Thanks Dan, yes I was getting some RF back and needed a choke for sure. Lesson learned there. I'll have to look into the ladder line and the Rybakov. All the best and 73!
looks a great antenna. I'm thinking it may be ideal for me when i go portable i have mobility problems. i could use the cable tires that you undo and pull the pole up from my wheelchair.
Hey man I'm brand new to ham radio. Setting up my rigs now. Two cheap vhf/uhf mobile rigs to simplex with my dad while hunting and some analog repeater use. My pota/sota/base station is the xiegu G90. Anyway I am building a simple 10 m dipole as my first antenna but would like to build a multiband antenna that isn't too hard to wrap my mind around. This stuff doesn't come easy for me. I do have a good antenna analyzer and all the necessary test equipment. Could you recommend a build to me? Not sure if a doublet is too difficult to learn how to set up and analyze or if I should go with an efhw or something else. I have 8 acres and the antenna is going to stay on my roof or strung around my yard until it stops working so size and mobility isn't a issue. Thanks man I love your videos. Cant wait to go to SF bay and try some of that salt water action. God bless - K06DFS
Thanks for the kind words! I would absolutely put up an End Fed Half Wave, it’s the easiest and most efficient multiband antenna to get started with. A 65’ long wire connected to a 49:1 unun and some coax and you’re cooking. You can put it up as a flat top, slope it or experiment with different configurations and see what works best. It’s at the top of my list for multiband permanent installation antennas is you have the space. 73, Walt
Hi Walt,
Was wondering if you've ever tried using ladder line for the legs of the dipole instead of stranded wire. My understanding you can shorten it about 20 to 30% by doing so
Hi Pat, I’ve heard that as well but have never tried it.
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES i have a linear loaded doublet that I use at home and it works well for local NVIS and also national contacts as well. It has a 25' 450-ohm ladder line as the feeder and also for the dipole legs legs - i added a third wire to the legs by weaving a #14 gauge insulated wire in and out of the windows - legs are only 16 feet on each leg, and able to talk 80-10 w a tuner
fantastic job my friend 73 from kb2uew
Thank you! 73 my friend!
Dat ga ik ook proberen.
Top.
I like
thanks walt i have a dx commander pole must try it out mi0num northern ireland
Thanks for watching! 73
Experiencia docet my friend. I'll stick with running the DX70 into my PREDator though. I've been doing a lot of 15m lately and getting really great results from "short hop" stuff here in the states (Kentucky, NC, and some New England) to Europe, Hawaii and even Russia this morning. I've been waiting for you to head back to Poland because getting into Virginia from here is tough. I'll be looking for you.
KC3UVF
Awesome, I’ll be looking for you!
Very interesting , unfortunately i dont have a 300 ohm ladder line but only a 450 ohm . Did you have a chance to test it with a 450 ohm ladder line ?
73s V85NPV
Thanks for watching. No I've only used the 300 ohm ladder line.
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES many thanks for your prompt response. i will try with a 450 ladder line. 73s
Hello , manage to perform some test with adjustments > The dipole with a total lenght 7.85m and ladder line 3m i manage to achieve very good results comparing to my ENDFED (23m long) and my Random long wire (30m long) . Receive signals are almost identical. My N7DCC tuner can tune the antenna without any problem 20,17,15,12 and 10m bands.. i am using a 1/1 current balun. This antenna will be converted as a Beam antenna with reflectors at the rear (5 wire Reflectors) to cover 20,17,15,12 and 10m bands. many thanks for your sharing . when done i will populate all information on my Website. 73s
Great job Walt! 73
Thank you! 73
Awesome. The G5RV is on my list for trying out.
It was a fun one, I have a big one I'm bringing to Poland.
The G5RV was originally designed as a monoband antenna to give some gain on 20m from what I've read over the years.
Yes, I have read that
Awesome
Don't let the haters get to ya, this was a great antenna to see, I love seeing people experiment with different aspects of ham radio. 73!
Thank you!
I love your videos!! Robert K5TPC
Thank you! 73, Walt
I have zero complaints about the G5RV!
Same here, great antenna!
Hey buddy. What time of day was this video made?
Between 2 and 3 in the afternoon.
Hey on the DX-70 is it a mic connector issue on the radio or just the mic?
I think it is the connector, I’ve got to do some tinkering and find out
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES Let me know here. I have two 8 pin round Alinco Mics. Easily adapted to 8 pin modular if needed.
