I go to Belize every year or two because I love it. This video is spot on. The only thing I would add is that Hopkins and Placencia are great places to visit as well. Placencia has a large ex-pat and American retiree population so that can be nice. Everyone there is so friendly.
Fataw Bukari Belize is a great country to visit but please wait until the current situation with the virus is over although our country does not presently have any confirmed cases.
m: Just be careful in Belize city, and don't spend more time there then you have. There isn't much for tourists to see or do there anyway. Go rural and it will get much better.
San Pedro is an out of history pirates shelter. For the adventurists it's perfect. The reefs there are a otherworldly experience especially for scuba divers. Belize is wonderful
The only thing he did not mention correctly was about the laws of Marijuana in Belize. Possession or use of 10 grams or less on private premises was decriminalized in November 2017.
He also didn't pronounce Caye Caulker correctly. Caulker, rhymes with walker. Back in the day, you could walk into a pharmacy and "Ask For Your Favorite Pharmacist", I think we did all the do's and broke all the don't's. Decades later, I live in the tropics full time - thanks Belize!
If you ever had a picture of the Garden of Eden in your mind…Belize fits the bill. Have made 3 trips there (church youth ministry service trips) in the Punta Gorda southern area. Belize residents are the friendliest in the world! As side trips we took the teens to the National Park, the Mayan ruins, the reef and the Blue hole. The freshest fruits and food. Now that I’m retired, considering a part time retirement in Belize, especially since it is only a 2 hour flight from Miami, then the “puddle jumper” flight south. Belize offers anything you are looking for from beach resort life to quiet country living…you give reasonable precautions to those that might be concerned. Don’t do anything stupid, and you will have no problem in Belize. Have to laugh about “Island time”….you nailed it!
Use reef safe sunscreen because the coral reefs are in danger and sunscreen is a huge factor. It is just as protective and it is also better for u because they are more natural.
As an American moving to Belize, I can say: Don't be afraid to explore the country. The tourist areas are more expensive and crowded. The mainland is quite different from the cayes. Pretty spot on with the rest of it, especially the ATMs.

My SCUBA buddies are diving there right now and this video REALLY makes me wish I was with them...but, I'm going to Dublin, Ireland for this year's big vacation.
At 10:34 he's in the Cayo district. A bit down on his right is a place called Pop's. The very best breakfast place, I've been going since I was a little kid. Down the street on the left in camera view is my Aunt and Uncle's gift shop, so yk, stop by if you need something. Down behind him and on the right (same as Pop's) is a Chinese restaurant called Maxim's, The only place I know you can get kumpo. Down on his left is a place called Ice Cream Shoppe. Nice Stuff. Best I've had kinda nice stuff. For context, this is downtown San Ignacio, where the Market is 400m (~ 1300ft) away. So it's one of the busiest placed in the country, if not the most.
We just came back from Belize and thoroughly enjoyed it. We stayed at an all-inclusive resort that takes care of the sight-seeing, etc. but we are going back to Belize year after year. We did the cave tubing, zip-line, ruins, snorkeling. I wouldn't mind living there.
Someone told me that Belize is very dangerous and they have crocodiles... is this true? Planning a visit in august. Also, they said summer is bad time to go because of rain...
@@katewiesbrook2992 You rarely see crocodiles here, unless you're in a swampy area, which I presume you won't be going. Also summer isn't a rainy time, it's just very hot, there might be a few showers, but it's hardly heavy. The showers would just last 3-5 mins. It isn't as dangerous since most of the crimes here are more personal, and the population is very small so it may seem like a lot. Just travel smart with you regular safety tips and regulations and you'll be fine. Hope this helps :]
As a travel agent, I hear the safety comments all of the time about places like Belize City and Mexico in general. Crime can happen anywhere (including the US obviously), but just like you wouldn’t go into a shady club or shady alley in the US, don’t do it elsewhere. Don’t get drunk or buy drugs etc. Just go do the touristy stuff and get home safely.
I just got back from Belize, stayed in San Pedro. The people of Belize are so welcoming and friendly. However, there are some scary people too, be smart when out and about. There is a curfew of 9pm for everyone. Loved your video!!
Thank you very much, your video has made me feel alot better about our upcoming trip... a comment-absolutely agree on the sunscreen, but the beams are not 'stronger' at the equator...they're actually at their 'weakest' at sea level, and stronger as you gain altitude because there's less atmosphere to protect you....;) UPDATE: we had a GREAT time in Plascencia at the Turtle Inn resort, also at Dolce Vita Italian restaurant, and all the little businesses in town. We also had an amazing tour experience with Splash Dive tours. Cant recommend these places enough!!!
It's stronger at the equator because it's more overhead/direct. You are probably right as well, but I know when I went down there, the sun definitely felt more intense than when I'm up in the states. I actually passed out from too much heat exposure, I also had a deeper tan just from standing out there for one day. so tread with caution.
Thanks for such an informative video! I LOVE how your "don'ts" are creative ways to reveal a lot of "dos." And I love how your kids are such adventurous, eager eaters of all that AMAZING food! My husband and I are building a vacation rental on Ambergris Caye - we will recommend your Belize videos!

My niece loves Belize she has traveled there many times for work. She would move there if she could. She is working more with wildlife and environmental but she says that if you ask the locals they will tell you what is safe or not.
We we're lucky, I had a 4 yr old and we saw a really small frog jumping around and tried taking pictures. The second I tried to reach out to pick it up one of the locals stopped us and told us they're poisonous (skin irritation). I was really glad they were with us at that time.
My friends family owns an AMAZING bed and breakfast there.... they make amazing food and cupcakes! I can’t wait to go visit her... very good video! Coconut Row.
Been to Belize twice. Stayed inland near Guatemala in outstanding eco lodges and then to Ambergris and Caulker respectively. It’s a wonderful place. Recommend it highly.
When we snorkeled the reef off Caye Kaulker my wife suffered badly with sunburn to the rear of her legs. So, don't forget that you'll be out there floating/frying for a long time. Pay special attention to your rear! Also, as part of our snorkeling trip, we visited San Pedro & I bought a bottle of rum. ALL on our boat appreciated a cap-full just to cleanse the seawater from our mouths/throat. Otherwise, don't forget to take a bottle of water with you.
@@leekyciabrown3769 So long ago now that I don't recall. But, just ask around the snorkling shop fronts & get a good deal. Don't settle for the first offer. We found Hector 'The Protector' & he was wonderful. If you need further info., hit me up.
we've been to Belize several times, it's a GREAT place to be and relax with more to do than many Caribbean countries. He didn't mention Placentia in the south, well worth checking out
When I was there in 1968 it was a very safe country. Even Belize City was relatively safe. Had a lot of fun during my summer there. I guess progress brings crime! In 1968 there were no resorts and no tourists to speak of. Great country! Great people. I lived with families when I stayed there. I want to go back.
I was born in the USA, but both sides of my family come from different parts of Belize. Since I was just 4 months old my mother took me to visit relatives in Belize City, and she did it every year until I was 4 in 1993. That summer she decided to stay with my family and enrolled me in kindergarten there in Belize City. We stayed a year and I turned 5. I remember being able to walk around in Belize City with my grandma at night and play around while stores still open. There was nothing to worry about. During the time I was there the Queen of England actually came to visit, so I got to see her in person not that far away . A family relative who we stayed with owned a boat and we would go to the Ceyes (mainly Caye Caulker) sometimes. It was very fun back then. I also did pick up basic Belizean Kriol after a year, but mom and I returned to the USA and didn't go back until I was much older. So I lost my Belizean Kriol accent, and by the time I returned there in the late 2000s it was a totally different country.
Its nice that you guys travel around the world. Your kids seem to be having a lot of fun in Belize. Thanks for sharing your experience and helpful tips!😊😊

I lived in Belize City, Bz from 1969-1977. Attended St. Catherine Elementary to St. John's College. My brother resides in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. I very much speak Cerole and love it. I love freaking Belizeans out speaking their native tongue. They know I cannot be scammed. Belize will always have a special place in my heart. Oh, when I first visited San Pedro in 1968, only had one street. Population roughly 200 humans.
Went to Belize for 10 days didn't have a problem not once! The people of Belize are really good people who take care of you. Tons of Expats everywhere from around the globe food is terrific even the coffee is good since Guatemala is right next door! I can't wait to get back down there. And hopefully one day I can be the expat living amongst the people

My father, Ruben Ricketts, left his home in Belize, 1940s, and emigrated to Edinburgh, Scotland. He was among the men who were invited to go the UK by the UK government to take up employment and fill the job vacancies after WWII ended. He married my Mum, a Scottish lady, and together, they had four children, of which I am one.
I was assaulted in hopkins belize. A man grabbed me and tried to act like it was an accident when i fought back. I was also harrassed by a man on a bike in san pedro. Women have to be more careful, for sure. Either way,it's still my favorite place on earth. There are bad people everywhere you go. Just gotta be aware of your surroundings.
Your rock! Thank you very much for all the info that you are sharing thought this video. We are going to Belize in two weeks, and I feel much better to know about this trip.
I recommend you check out the cayo district mainly cave tubing and hiking and all sorts off fun stuff while in the hills surrounded by amazing wildlife...its also gonna be way cheaper than on the islands where they jack up the prices for tourists...
I'm originally from Belize and honestly the honesty and clarity you have provided to many in re of my home country is very much appreciated and honorable. Hopefully it motivate more folks to "Belize It" and experience it...
2015 my wife and I were in Port on a cruise. There were armed guards at the entrances of the port and we were told that a couple of tourists had been killed a month earlier. We were not allowed to leave the port unless in a tour group with a guide.
Rumfish is a nice essentially out door patio dinning restaurant and bar. Food and drink are very good. Next to other areas of interest. I visit Belize every year to fly fish and visit the cayes, and afterwards stop by Rumfish and a great Italian ice cream parlor. And it doesn't get any better than this!
I have a beautiful BnB in Ladyville which is only 8 minutes from the airport and sits on the Caribbean Sea. Stay tuned for the Belize House on the Northern Highway! Oh and it’s very safe and Belize City is like any other city…you don’t have to go downtown, But frankly we go downtown often and no one bothers us and actually people are quite friendly… It’s just better to go during the day. Crime is everywhere in the United States and if you’re from the US you know there’s violence every day in our country! Belize is a safe haven especially at our location where we are gated and nobody can get into our place. What’s really nice is you get to enjoy your own private home on the water and take a boat over to all of these locations and still come back and be near the airport for departure! Check it out on Facebook coming soon!
Im watching this for an assignment and I was just kinda doing it to get a good grade but now I’m intrigued. This video is awesome dude you’re super chill!
The spelunking and going on a tube through cave sounds incredible. You sold me on that. We loved the Mesoamerican reef too. Most places you have to go diving just to see a few species of fish. The Mesoamerican reef in Honduras had sea turtles, scorpion fish, and tons of corals. It had it all.
He is not kidding about using sunscreen or staying at all times under a palm tree. I assure you that multiple years for 4-7 day stays I simply won’t wear sunscreen but absolutely spent all time under a palm tree. Arrived back in the states with a simply perfect tan. The sun is that strong

I loved Belize. There was one issue I had, which was not mentioned as a concern. I met a young woman who offered to take me to the islands for a small fee. She was very clear that she was not a prostitute, just a tour guide. She was 24 but looked 17. She was very short and very dark complexion. I am white as can be, much older and tall. We ran into problems right away on the boat. Several men running the boat came over to us and told us we could not sit together. No explanation given and no argument from us. After showing me some ruins and history, we went to a cafe for lunch. After we ordered drinks (she was carded), a man came to our table and asked us to leave. Again, no explanation, we got up without argument and left. I can only guess it was the age difference, the assumption that we were a couple and perhaps some form of racism. As a guest in their country, I simply bowed my head and accommodated the request. Again, I had a great time. I just wish I knew what the cultural issue was. If I had known it was a problem, I would have turned her down and just went on my own.
Hello?? Mr. Naive traveler:They don’t tolerate prostitution, particularly out of town old men pervs. “Concern” my arse. Lucky you didn’t go to jail or worse. Pandering?? Now THAT is a concern. Here’s one: while in Belize don’t be fooled by pretty young ladies who look like teenagers and probably are!!

Belize, formerly British Honduras, makes you appreciate how the British Empire uplifted people. Compare the cleanliness, neatness, and prosperity of Belize to the chaos, poverty, and slovenly conditions in the places where Spain was the colonial power and Spanish culture was the model.

Built a home there. Love it. But if partying get home before dark or at least be with a group. Bad folks are everywhere.
Would you recommend the cave tubing? Its on the top of my list for excursions
@@Londonlady4lyfe Most definitely! I went 2 times at "Nohoch Che'en Caves Branch" in Jaguar Paw also known as Caves Branch and enjoyed myself.

Belize is a safe haven especially at our location where we are gated and nobody can get into our place.
Belize, formerly British Honduras, makes you appreciate how the British Empire uplifted people. Compare the cleanliness, neatness, and prosperity of Belize to the chaos, poverty, and slovenly conditions in the places where Spain was the colonial power and Spanish culture was the model.
