Thank you. It was pretty straight forward. Sorry for those who did not know to turn off the water 1st. Always turn off water when working with pipes, same as you would turn off electricity when working with power!

So great that every time I have a minor issue like a leaking bathtub faucet, I can spend a couple minutes on You Tube and find the perfect video. Thanks for posting this - showed me the exact model valve cartridge to get ... 2 minutes watching your video, a 20 minute round trip to Home Depot and literally 5 minutes worth of work and that constantly running faucet works like new. Probably only would've taken 3 minutes but I had the valve upside down and had to open it back up and turn it 180 degrees to make sure the hot and cold was in the same place.

Couple of details. In my case, the faucet had been installed for decades and we have minerals in the water around here - so everything was seized up. The little clip which you so quickly pulled with a set of offset pliers, in your case was not obstructed by the tile work. In my case, I didn't have a straight shot at it, and as it is relatively soft metal, it started to shred when I was unable to get a good grip on it the first couple of tries, fortunately I was able to drive an icepick in from the top and lever it up - but it would have been handy if you had shown what the clip looks like when you pulled it, rather than immediately moving on. Second, breaking the core loose when seized is task - and that little tool is not readily available without hunting all over town - so if you have a work around, that would be nice to show.

      For real, the little PVC
tool head also shattered under the grip strength of my pliers, and the only way to get it was to buy another entire part. It will not "loosen" as he easily demonstrated, and now it all jammed up in there.

So after watching your instructional video,
I did exactly as you said… and to my surprise the water started shooting out like a fire hose lol. Yes, I didn’t think to turn off the water first as I have zero plumbing experience and thought that perhaps there is something located in the back that would keep the water off. Thankfully I managed to find the main water shutoff under the house during my panic.
But at least it makes for a fun story to tell everyone now 😜

The good thing in this case was that the water is in the shower. From now on, always turn of water first, sinks and toilets have the turnoff at the base.

You might not need to buy that "cartridge puller" tool. If you see in this video, he just used it to "break the seal" and loosen it. I used some needle-nose pliers, placed the tips on each side of the plastic part of the cartridge that has slots on each side, and twisted. This loosened it, so then, just like he did, I was able to pull the cartridge out. I guess some people might need the deluxe puller that screws in if it's really stuck. And like many people said previously, TURN OFF THE WATER SOURCE before you pull the cartridge!

Man I wish i didnt fast forward your video... i might have figured out how to shut off the water would have been VERY helpful 1ST... I accidently broke the rusty pipe behind the wall cuz i cranked it too hard. I then went into crisis mode scrambling to find how to turn it off... after tripping over and breaking some of the kids furniture and toys I made a few phone calls some deductive reasoning I found out that the water shuts off Outside of the house so full blast water and near 30 minutes later a lot of drywall ruined and my basement totally flooded I got the water shut off... Yay.
I would like to give a special thanks to the jerkstore who decided that you need a special tool to properly remove the thing it cost me a small fortune to have everything repaired. I regret to admit that I also am seeing a shrink to process the traumatic experience since it has left me broke, I got fired from my job for spacing out and not making quota. The same day I walked into my house to finding my wife cheating on me with the contractor we hired to fix the whole job.. what has made it Really hard is reliving the moment where my wife called me a little bitch because I just stood there while the guy cleaned her pipes. .. . I dont know I just couldnt help it he didnt even slow down he actually sped up and the irony or everything sinking in just made me freeze up.
So a few months later everything now different in my life i now sleep in the basement because my wife and Rob the contractor cant handle the black mold thats brewing behind the walls down here. Im not sure if you can learn something from my story if you do then i feel better because I dont try to do anything on my own anymore. My psych Doctor is working with me slowly baby stepping me back to normal... I guess the good news is Im pretty sure things couldnt get much worse but hey somebody has to make people laugh hopefully I did that okay...
Alright guys good luck with fixing your leaky showers... btw Luck is Not A Factor.

    • @ChicagoSouthDan
      @ChicagoSouthDan 9 років тому +1

Quite right. I had to replace a cartridge in my kitchen sink that was decades old. I had to rent a special tool from the hardware store for about $5 (not much) but then really work to get the cartridge out. Perhaps it might be good to say what to do if the cartridge does not come out easily. Also, this assumes that installing the new cartridge will be easy, but that might not be the case. Therefore, it should probably show how to install the new cartridge.

Thanks, Terry. This video gave me the core steps. My faucet valve wasn't that easy to get out. I needed to use some vinegar & baking soda to get rid of corrosion. Then sprayed some WD40. The white little tool worked to get the valve moving, but I had to pull really hard a few times to get it out. I may swap out my master shower valve before it starts leaking as a maintenance precaution.

hi guys I am wondering if I have a leak in the wall. I kept hearing
water dripping sound in the wall on the 1st floor, from below the window
frame it seems, started to hear it about 3 days ago. It's about 10
feet from the shower location at 2nd floor where the shower head have
been dripping for 3,4 years, but recently it dripped more I think, about
one drip every 6 seconds I wonder if the 1st floor wall dripping sound
    is from that?
I turned off the water main and after 25 min I
still heard the dripping sound, didn't diminish it seemed the same. I
don't see water spots or water discoloration but it's been going on 2,3
days so maybe not that long?. also went outside to see the wall and dig a
little bit to see if anything is wet, nothing. Does it sound like a
leak in the wall or maybe some insects or sun shining on the wall and
caused the dripping/sunshine on stucco sound. but I didn't really hear
it before until recently. if it's a leak I need to get it fixed fast
right? or it will develops into a bigger and expensive problem? thanks
for reading and help. (house is about 11 years old, plumbing is all pvc,
oh the shower head drip it should just drip inside the shower area
right, and not inside the shower wall plumbing area or future out in
    other areas of plumbing?)

That plastic cap comes with the new one. If you aren't sure which one you need just go to home depot and buy a couple different ones, then take back the ones you didn't use. But to be honest you don't really need the tool, the whole thing pulls straight out the same way it goes in. The tool just makes it a little easier by rotating the entire plastic shaft inside the copper chamber to break up any calcium that built up. But again you can technically just pull it out. Also pay close attention that he removed a small washer from the shaft before using the tool. Be careful with that cause the new valve doesn't come with it.

Hope you found your answer.? Yes, turn the water off first. It might be located outside by your hose. Usually, the one in the front yard. He pulled out an item called a/the "cartridge." Once you replace this, the leak should stop. I just had a friend show me how to do one, but he is a bit sloppy or the cartridge is the wrong size (brand) it's leaking still. Best to take the original with you to the hardware store. Once you reverse all the steps and have all the parts back in, turn the water back on.

He says " first thing you do is remove your shower handle" but in fact if you're watching this you probably have never had to do this before, so wouldn't the first thing to do would be to locate & shut OFF the water supply, on the tub its usually somewhere outside, other than that, an excellent helpful video...

Terry, I had given up until I discovered your video which illustrated the exact procedure in repairing the leaky valve. It had been leaking downstairs through the ceiling for a week and i had to cut out a large piece of the dry wall which became water saturated leaving an ugly stained color. I got the cartridge out and plan to buy a new Moen at Home Depot today. I'm hopeful it will work. The whole i cut in the ceiling is another repaiir job I'll have to figure out how to fix. Thanks

Terry very nice video. This appears to be the same Fossett I have and can you tell me the brand name? Also, what did you do to the cartridge to stop the leak?

My first thought was you should turn off the water. Makes sense since you’re messing with valves and what not. But here’s an interesting observation: You can definitely replace the shower head WITHOUT turning off the water.
Like I said before, if you think about the valves and source of water pressure and what not, that makes sense as to why the water can stay on.
But this video should definitely mention turning off the water first, since many ppl may not think that deep into it, we’re obviously not plumbers after all😂

You neglected to tell people to turn off their main water supply....
Step one (1) turn off your main water supply.

This great. But if Attempted to do this I would probably break something. Ha. I have to wait until the husband comes home to fix it. My shower is leakng form the shower head and has been for awhile now but today seems worse and loud, so it's so annnoyingggg!!!! So I will probably close the bathroom door while I am in the bedroom! Haha! :/

Looks easy since its probably a new facet. How do you take out the cartridge when bnb it's old a frozen that not even with that plastic tool will not work or the two clips break off !!!

  • @johntheplumber2399
    @johntheplumber2399 5 років тому

It’s a shower valve not a faucet. And using a pair of needle nose pliers to extract the cartridge is not that easy. They make a cartridge puller for both Posi-Temp and these kinds of valves

Thanks for the video, was able to replace it pretty easily. Issue is somehow replacing my cartridge my cold is the hot and hot is the cold? How is that possible and what can I do to fix it?

Can you use the big puller instead of the white piece you used. I'd rather use the white piece but I can not find it anywhere

Holy schitt! I thought I had the whole house water turned off!!! I didn't and after finding out that Stanadyne changed to Moen and two stores, I found the part and used it to pull the cartridge and WOW! THERE'S THE WATER PRESSURE! After going to the other side of the wall and prying off the piece screwed to the wall for access to plumbing pipes (NO TURN OFF THERE!) and running to basement to see where else it could've been, I finally found the actual SHUT OFF! Don't even want to think about the water bill next month!
