  • We are not far off from actually reseeding my lawn as part of the lawn renovation I have going on so today I wanted to share some thoughts on how to prepare to reseed your lawn. This video covers seed, how much seed to use, sprinklers, starter fertilizer, tenacity herbicide and peat moss. Whew! I know that's a ton of info but to make sure our renovation is successful we want to have our bases covered.

    I just ordered tenacity! I just got a house that's side yard is COVERED in weeds, like very little grass there anymore lol spraying this down, going to dethatch, aerate, overseed, and fertilize. Hopefully next spring/summer it will look a million times better. Just have to decide on a seed mix for cool season area

    Ryan. I used Tenacity once to control crabgrass and oh it was wonderful. But now this fall I want to overseed my 40 year old lawn, I'm on 4 acres of lawn grass, but will only do 1 acre. Yet, I don't have a sprinkler system. How do I get grass seed to germinate w/o sprinklers? I am in lower Michigan, greater Detroit area? I will overseed in mid September. THUMBS UP!!

    Hi Ryan - Great videos. Joe from CT here. We live in a new construction home and my builder put down Pennington Contractors mix which is Perennial & Annual Ryegrass. He put it down at the end of may and right now I've been mowing it but I really don't like the look or texture. There's tons of dirt patches here, very hard clay like soil and some areas have no grass at all. I want to start over but don't want to spend a ton. Should I try to do the complete overhaul as you have or just aerate, thatch, and rake? The goal is really to just have that dark green lawn. I want KBG but I feel that might be difficult to get it to spread through this ryegrass and i'll still have to mow. I plan to do "something" right around labor day, i just dont know what that full plan looks like yet. Again great videos!

    I went pretty heavy handed with the Tenacity had zero issues with damage to turf. Yea it works slower killing weeds but the stuff is amazing. You are going to be glad you used it. Probably also wanna mention frequency of watering. Where I live the soil is extremely sandy so my timer is set to every six hours 10 minutes each watering. It's also still pretty hot where i live so thats another reason.

    currently in the middle of my second application of Tenacity myself. I had a terrible problem with Bentgrass. It is mixed in about 50 percent in my lawn. I was going to kill the whole lawn like you and start over but the tenacity is going to save me from that and I can just heavily overseed. Excellent product. you'll love it

      How did the tenacity work out for you? I’ve been using it all summer with little to no success. The tips of some grasses get frosted by it but it all seems to grow right out of it. It also does very little to kill crabgrass.

    We just bought a house in Athol, Idaho. I have about 1.5 acres that I want to make a nice lawn out of the almost 5 total acres. The problem i have is the grass or lack there of is mostly pasture land and weeds. I was thinking of using a 2,4 D product from North 40 or a local feed store. The ground is also hard as a rock. Should I do a soil loosening product first and then follow it up with something else a couple days after? Then overseed with a tall fescue or something that won't require alot of watering. Its hard to water the entire portion in a day.

    I started a new lawn recently. I removed the sod/thatch layer with down to bare soil, brought in quality topdressing, smoothed it out, used a quality fine fescue mix, and used a straw layer over the raked in seeds. I seeded first week in August (minnesota) Unfortunately, mostly only weeds came up (quackgrass, dandelions, purslane), with only patches of the the fine fescue, which isnt doing so well. I think some of the mistakes that I made were seeding too early (its been hot here for the last few weeks), and that the underlying seedbed of weeds needs to be killed. Im thinking of using a glyphosate mix like in your video to nuke the new lawn and start over. I have a few new trees I planted recently in the area. Can you think of any issues I should be aware of? Thanks

    Just got my 3 bags of Jonathan Green Black Beauty Ultra today to over seed my front yard. I have mostly KBG and want to get some TTTF mixed in to get better rooting and drought tolerance. I also got tenacity to kill off the invasive grasses before I seed. Instead of core aeration I’m going to hit the front with RGS and AIR8. I just cored it a few weeks ago since we have been getting hammered by rain here in PA and the ground was soft. You guys and your videos! Now I’m obsessed with grass.

    Nice info on this video! I can vouch for the peat moss. Last fall with over seed, I had some bare spots to fix and topped those with peat moss. After about 1-2 weeks, I noticed that the areas covered with the peat were doing a lot better than other areas with just seed. I went to Lowes and picked up several more bags of the peat and top dressed the entire lawn. Please don't ask how much it cost, LOL. But, it was definitely worth it!

Wish was 70% wild violet and crab grass. I've looked it was with Glyphosate... But in the bare areas where Grass never grew and the soil is like concrete in going to till about 4 inches. Hi. I found your channel recently and I have a question. You did some over seeding the other year and this year, you are doing a complete renovation. I recently bought a house that has some major weed issues in the lawn. My plan was to try to revive the lawn over the next couple of years. Am I wasting my time or is there a chance I’ll be successful? The reason I ask is there must be a reason you decided to start over with a complete renovation... any input would be greatly appreciated! Take care!

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  6 років тому

      The main reason for mine is it was just a mix of grasses I didn't like together. For most people it would have been perfectly find but I'm looking for low cut varieties that I can mow like golf courses so I had to seed with something specific. For you it depends on how many weeds and your level of patience. :)

      TheMadOne _ my experience with a new purchase house had excellent results. My builder had let the sod die, had come in and aerated and oversexed, and then didn't water much. As a result we had stripes of grass between the rolls of sod and the rest weeds. Heavy heavy clay. Took 1 full year to turn around using milorganite, worm castings, liquid aerify and alfalfa pellets. Then in fall slot seeded the yard and it took off. Best advice is get a plan and work it and be patient.

    Sadly, I have a Septic Tank in my Back Yard with Risers, for easy location for Pumping...
    As we all know, gases do excape from the Riser Lids, and harm the Grass, and allow Weeds to grow.
    What can I do to fix this?
    As I reside in Zone 8B (Olympic Peninsula of Washington State), what Grass Type would be the BEST for my 70% Full Sun/30% Partial-Full Shade Lawn?
    My 1/3 Acre gives me Approximately 7,500sqft of workable Lawnspace. I have a couple Flowerbeds in the Corners to make Mowing easier, and a Raised Vegetable Garden, a ~25' Dogwood Tree, and about 9 Thunderhead Flowering Plum Tree's (planted 2008).
    I've attempted to speak to local Professional Landscapers, but they just opt for Herbicides, that I don't want to use... I'm "trying" to go ALL ORGANIC, without financially going BROKE!
    Any recommendations are welcome!

      regarding your septic vents, I had the same in my yard. I cut mine down to below surface and capped each with 4" PVC cap with drilled holes for venting. Then dug a little around each and put in round utility/valve boxes - flush mount to the surface with the dark green landscaping lids. Looks so much better than before and I don't have to mow around them and trim. Just thought I would share that little project. Ryan - Do you recommend putting down Milorganite when overseeding, as well as starter fertalizer about a week later? In MA what kind of seed do you think would be best....I have heard that both Tall Fescue and Ryegrass work well.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  6 років тому +1

      You can do milorganite at any time and usually I add starter fert just before grass should be germinating (depending on the type) when I overseed. What grass seed you use kind of all depends on what you want for looks. Check out some photos of bluegrass, ryegrass, and fescue and see what you think.

    I'm planning on doing a core aeration this fall with an overseed. Do i need to start training my grass by cutting it lower? So the seed has good seed to soil contact? Should i Dethach right before my overseed. Thanks and keep up the great work!

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  6 років тому

      You can but sometimes if you shock it a little but cutting it lower all at once that's not so bad either since you let the new grass seed come in while the existing is lagging behind a little. The first few times I overseeded I was probably around 2.75 inches on the grass so it wasn't super short and it still worked fine. I would dethatch if you can. The more thinned out it is the more chance you have for new seed to find its way to the soil.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare

      It really all depends on what you like for looks. Bluegrass takes more water to keep it looking good when it's dry but at the same time it survives going dormant very well. I personally have never liked fescue as much as far as looks but there are some nicer varieties now too that I would consider it.

However, it's minimally toxic, yet it's very deadly to the yellow sedge and smooth crabgrass (and everything broadleaf) that is the predominant issue here in NY. Two applications at a medium strength knocked out 90% of a backyard neglected for decades that was at least half sedge and crabgrass. It did not kill the bentgrass infestation however. • @1Tim3Man

    Hey Ryan, question for you. Apologies if this is sort of involved.
    I just moved into my first house and from what I can tell there is fescue/st aug/marathon and weeds all sort of having been ignored by the previous owner. I'm going through and hand pulling the st augustine and trying to dethatch as much as possible to make sure I can get soil contact. My plan is to plant a nice bermuda (with fertilizer and manure top) in that and from what I've heard bermuda will crowd out everything else and with low cuts the remaining other grasses will die over time. Is this a good plan? Or are there going to be other problems if I don't completely kill then dethatch the entire lawn? Because as it stands now it looks like if I went that route I'd just need to till the entire lawn

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  5 років тому +1

      So you still have a decent amount of fescue in the yard? If there is then it probably will not mix well with the bermuda for a while. The bermuda will probably take over eventually but in the mean time that mix of things will not look very good.

    • @1Tim3Man
      @1Tim3Man 5 років тому

      @@ryanknorrlawncare yeah that was my thought too. it's a pretty decent mess of marathon/fescue/st aug/weeds. I'm sort of thinking I'll need a do-over. Would I need to kill of the lawn with glyphosate AND till the lawn to get all of the deep staugustine roots out or would tilling do the job on it's own? My initial plan is to just till, wait a week, till the weeds that pop up again, level, flatten, seed, compost, roll, water. But do you think a session or 2 of glyphosate is a needed step first?

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  5 років тому

      Is there a specific reason you want to till other than leveling? The reason I ask is that I tilled my backyard renovation years ago and it essentially became nothing but crabgrass for a while. If you do till then I would just say water it lightly for a few weeks and then spray again before you plant anything. Also if you're doing bermuda, what variety?

    • @1Tim3Man
      @1Tim3Man 5 років тому

      @@ryanknorrlawncare I just want to till because there is a complex mess of the st augustine roots and thatch and other grass plugs that just dont seem like, even if I killed them, that pulling them out would be anything less than a nightmare. I only plan to till about 3" deep just to get all of the crap easier to rake away. What you're saying was sort of my plan. Till then give it a couple weeks to see what kind of weeds get brought up from that, but regardless I have to pull all of the competing grass and weeds out,
      I want to do blackjack bermuda grass seed.
      If there was a way to send you a picture or video I could, because I feel like I sort of understand the remainder of the process, just not sure if I should kill it all off before I till or what the risk would be if I tilled without glyphosate first.

    if i am going to lay a rich topsoil / compost mix before seeding, will i need to use much fertilizer in addition to seeding?
