  • Day 288 - This blog post feels like a tough one. It hasn’t escaped my attention that I’m writing a lot lately sharing my increasing upset and disgust over how much of my life has seemingly been wasted on work. My current employer is great! That’s not the problem. It’s the paradigm of labor I’m referring to that is the issue; the social contract of trading life for money, security and livelihood. I don’t know another or a better way, and I can offer no alternative to the life I did choose to live.
This all began when I decided and announced my plan to retire. From that very day forward this feeling of a wasted life has been growing, becoming compounded by the fact that I am still working, and now see so clearly the years of life potential which I did willingly and thoughtlessly exchange for a steady paycheck. Like I said, I know of no better way to live, especially as a family man, and I’d do it all again exactly the same if the clock were rewound back to 1984 and age twenty. Still, I hate how I’ve mostly frittered my life away with work I never enjoyed and often hated. It’s like waiting a hour after a meal to enjoy the pool, only to find out the pool is closing soon when that hour is up.

Before this final year of my career began back in September, I said to myself, I'll continue to give all I can to my students, but to not let all the other BS in and out of the classroom bother me. When the bell goes at the end of the day, it all gets turned off. Monthly staff meetings are a challenge. Most of the talk is how to implement new ways of doing things... I can hear admin talking but I don't hear them 😁

I know exactly what you are describing Andy. There’s a strange sense of disconnect from all of the talk of the future. Just yesterday, I was sitting at my cube at work, looking at the faces of my coworkers, staring at their computer screens, and realizing that I no longer have that intense stare at work.
