  • The fact that we left Japan boils down to the fact that our roots there were shallow, and thus easy to pull up, dislodge and, essentially, destroy. I see that now. In this clip, where I stand, last year, outside the front door of the house in Shizuoka where my family dreamed to live eleven years ago, but were told no. If the owners of this house had said yes, and had rented this place to us, then we would have moved in from our little apartment nearby, bought and filled the house with new furniture, got ourselves a dog, and perhaps a cat, and would have then never, ever, come back to the USA. Our roots in Japan would simply have become too strong; stronger than our desire to pull away-and we would certainly still be there now. And that’s not a bad thing. It’s just a different thing. A glimpse perhaps, at the road not taken. (KB)

🌸 In this reflective softypapa short, I share how not getting the house in Yara changed the course of our lives forever. When we were denied the chance to rent it, it set us on a path to leave Japan and start anew in America. The lack of deep roots in Yara kept us free and mobile, making it possible to embrace new opportunities. Had we gotten the house, we would have settled down, gotten a dog, and laid down roots that would have made leaving difficult. This moment of 'no' became a turning point, influencing our life trajectory in profound ways.
    Haiku:
    Roots unbound by fate,
    Paths diverge with freedom's call,
    Journey unplanned blooms.
