One of the greatest and most influential royal houses to ever exist in history. From marrying several European families (there was even an Austrian empress in Brazil & Austrian emperor in Mexico) to herocially protecting Europe against the Ottomans and keeping the balance of Europe. Even if the Habsburg Monarchy doesn't exist anymore and the last crown prince is dead, its glory will live on.

There were of course some opponents of the Habsburgs, but most of the Austrians remained loyal to the Habsburgs. They just wanted to transform the absolutist monarchy into a constitutional or parliamentary monarchy (as in the UK today). It was the Entente who ensured that the Habsburgs had to give up their claim to Austria and then to Hungary.

I remember my great grandma telling stories told to her by her parents about living under Austria, and all they stories were good, Empire was probobly the best time during galizien history, most of our old buildings have this unique style, and this is why I have respect to Austria and the Entire Habsburg family. The thing is, it wasn't counted as incest back then. The Habsburgs never married brothers and sisters, and that was also incompatible with their faith. They were only allowed to marry off relatives of the 2nd degree. That was quite normal back then. All the great noble houses (Habsburgs, Bourbons, Romanovs, Welfen or Hohenzollern) were all related to one another.
Removing them from power in 1918 was fatal for European Jews. I maybe American but I have no respect for Woodrow Wilson for that reason alone.

To think that austria was one of the most powerfull countries at the beggining of the 20th century in Europe is mind blowing.
Powerful more like a bunch of ethnicities trying to stay together even though they don't get along with each other. They suffered the same fate as the ottomans or the Russians. If you can't keep a multi ethnic state together oppressing them is not a solution.

Look, I am jewish too, and as a historian my field of research is jews in the armed forces of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. No country was as liberal at the time, and for us, jews, it gave us everything; freedom, equality, and prosperity. He gave the same to all of his nations. I definately understand the nostalgy for HRH Franz Joseph; I have a huge painting of him on my wall. Did you knew that they were regularly corresponding with Queen Victoria, calling each other Dear Brother and Dear Sister?

@ And at the end of the period you mentioned, in 1914, a world war started just because of the hurt pride of some monarchs in Austria, Russia and Germany. Nations followed their monarchs who did not understand that the people they reign over were not just their Chess figures.
There is nothing wrong in being a proud citizen of your home country, but we have to thank God that the times of monarchy have long been gone.

The monarchy itself was the most popular in world's history, and so of course many countries have seen good centuries under the reign of monarchs. But overall, the idea of monarchy (one person stands above the whole state and above the law) mostly lead to horrible episodes in history. I cannot believe that someone wants to change the democracy in which he lives into a monarchy.

In fact, that’s how WW1 began. All that tension building up from empire building eventually was let loose when the Austrian crown prince was killed in Sarajevo and the major powers of Europe are begging for war. Germany’s breaking of Belgian neutrality is an interference against a British zone of influence, which led to the two countries being involved in a war that killed millions.
He will live in many people's hearts for the part he played in the opening of the frontiers in Central Europe ending in the Mauerfall on 9 November 1989.

Ich komme aus Mähren. Vater meines Urgroßvates kämpfte in der österreichischen Armee an der Ostfront und war ein deutschsprachiger Pole aus Krakau. Nach dem Krieg ist er nach Mährisch Ostrau umgesiedelt. Sein Sohn hat später meine Urgroßmutter aus Südmähren (heute Břeclav - eine Kleinstadt an der Grenze zu Österreich geheiratet. Die Familie meiner Mutter stammt aus Südböhmen, wobei der Vater meiner Großmutter aus Südtirol stammte. Ich fühle mich mit Österreich eng verbunden, obwohl ich aus Tschechien stamme. Laut einer Studie haben Tschechen und Österreicher fast zu 89% die gleiche DNA. Liebe Grüße aus Brno (Brünn)!

@@Marzelmusik Nja. Aber jedes Volk oder jede Ethnie hat eigene Haplogruppe. Und die Österreicher haben die ähnlichste Mischung der Haplogruppen zu den Tschechen. Mein Deutsch ist auch nicht perfekt, also ich kann mich nicht so gut ausdrücken wie die Muttersprachler.

Der Umzug war doch im Rahmen eines Staates möglich oder? Cisleithanien. Ein Lehrer am Gymnasium, dass ich absolviert habe stammte aus Graz (Steiermark) und war böhmischer Herkunft.

I hadn’t seen this until today. I listened to a radio documentary with an interview perhaps 15-18 years ago, and was impressed with him as a statesman/Paneuropeanist and intellectual after the program. Wikipedia describes him as being fluent in 7 languages, however, I recall him saying he was fluent in 10, and in his 90s was working on number 11. I don’t think I could ever characterize him as being one of the “idle rich.” I suspect he would have been quite interesting to have known.

The Kaiserhymne has been adapted for use in many places and in many ways. I once attended Mass in a church in Austria, where the choir master was an old friend. I suggested the day before that he use the music of the Kaiserhymne for Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament and he liked the idea, so we sang the Tantum Ergo, using its' music. The words fit perfectly; here's the first verse:

Sensuum defectui.

On my opinion this is the best version of this anthem. It almost sounds so angelical and it is a beautiful version.
Personally, not too keen on some of the occasional altered harmonies; Haydn knew what he was doing when he wrote it and didn’t need any help from any local organist.
als von der preussen seite herkommender, rein geografisch, die familie lebte hier bei bremen borgfeld, ich durfte sie persönlich kennenlernen und als musiker teils begleiten, fühle ich mich genauso den habsburgern verbunden und auch wenn ich es jahre später erst hier sehe, so sei mein herzlichstes mitleid ausgesprochen, gottes segen für die zukunft und kraft all den verbliebenen ein langes friedvolles gesundes leben.

Stimmt, moralisch stehen die Habsburger und die katholische Kirche auf einer Stufe. Beide sind durch und durch verkommen. Die Hohenzollern sind auch nicht besser.
Ich hatte das Glück als Kind seinen Geburtstag besuchen zu dürfen wo ich ihn auch getroffen habe! Erinnern tue ich mich aber nicht mehr da ich zu klein war, die Medaille die man bekommen hat wurde ebenfalls in einem Einbruch gestohlen somit bleibt mir nur eine gute Geschichte! Dennoch redet meine Urgroßmutter bis heute davon wie netter doch war als sie und ihr Ehemann einmal bei ihm zum Essen eingeladen wahren!

Da gab es doch Bestrebungen, das "brüderlich" inn"geschwisterlich" zu ändern, wenn es nach den linksgrünversifften Vollidioten geht sogar "...für das deutsche Vaterland.." in "...für unser aller Vaterland..." zu ändern. If the Austrian Empire had survived--perhaps as a sort of Central European "commonwealth"--the sad history of eastern Europe in the 20th century might have been happier. Its various nationalities able to form a common cause against the predatory ambitions of both Germany to the West, and Russia to the East.
Politics aside---this is a very moving and solemn ceremony. Especially for those of us who know anything about Austrian history. And understand the significance of Otto's passing.

Ich bin selber ein in Österreich lebender Ausländer und ich habe großen Respekt vor der Geschichte des Kaiserreichs, der österreichischen Kultur, usw....

Die österreichische Habsburgermonarchie erscheint uns glanzvoll und es wäre auch schön, wenn wir heutzutage the Last Empire on Earth wären, mit einem netten Kaiser und einer süßen Kaiserin.
Aber die Ära ist zugrunde gegangen, und zwar mit wehenden Fahnen, wie es sich gehört, nicht so demütigend langsam wie bei den Windsors zum Beispiel.
Die Monarchie in Österreich einzuführen, das seine Identität erst in der Zeit der Republik gefunden hat, wäre unnatürlich, kostspielig und nicht mutig in die neuen Zeiten.

Obwohl ja genug solche Kästen in kuk herumstanden, mußt Sisi in Wien noch eeine neues bekommen, daß sie kaum eimal betreten hat. das traurige ist, dass dieser nutzlose haufen so viel geld kostet, dass man beispielsweise förderprogramme für die seerettung der flüchtlinge im mittelmeer kürzen muss, diesen schwachsinn aber ohne wimpernzucken bezahlen kann.
nur weil sie alle einen anzug tragen sind sie kein deut nützlicher. obendrein bestimmen sie ihre diäten die in deutschland bei ca 9000€ /monat liegen nach belieben selbst- getreu dem motto: man muss sein gehalt ja anpassen.....
ein monarch der sein leben für das volk verbringt und so erzogen wird der fühlt sich verpflichtet für sein volk was zu tun. (gut nicht immer klar aber in der regel schon), am besten untersützt durch ein parlament.
ganz ehrlich: wenn man gewählt wurde und man weiss dass man die nächste wahl nicht schafft macht man doch sowieso was man will und kassiert dabei fett ein. wenn ich könnte würde ich auch nur im bundestag rumdödeln und mehr geld kassieren als ein mann der sein leben lang z.b dächer deckt und schwer arbeitet.
wenn überhaupt ist die jetzige form der demokratie gleich gut/schlecht und korrupt und verdorben wie eine monarchie, aber bestimmt nicht besser!!
demnach würde es der welt gewiss nicht weh tun wenn man ein paar dieser tausenden abgeordneten in die wüste schickt und gegen einen monarchen und seinen stab eintauscht :)
