For me, one of the most beautiful and strongest funeral rituals in the world. It is deeply Christian and shows the insignificance of the worldly. Stripped of all titles, man himself remains, who is allowed to return to his Creator only naked, so to speak, and despite his sins. Therein lies a deep ultimate justice that is bestowed on a believer. Because he is not bound by his good or bad deeds. None of this counts, only he himself and the promise of God's forgiveness.

In my experience many Germans prefer to refer to themselves by their pre 1870 identities, ie: Bavarian, Franconian, Saxon - the one exception possibly being Prussian. I don't want to get into a tit-for-tat discussion about how many (or few) people died in the extermination camps but the figure of six million is based on an analysis of surviving German documents. The figure, that applies only to Jewish victims, is considered by some historians to be a conservative estimation.

Maybe he will do more good as a saint rather then as an emperor re: the future of Europe.
@jimbob1969 In that single comment, you show you know nothing of what the world was like in (or before) the First World War. Basically, the whole world was preparing itself for a conflict. Germany kept amassing a huge navy - the British tried to top it at least for double; France increased her armies; Russia tried to expand her influence in China and Turkey; Austria tried to assert its power in the Balcans... I mean, it was a melting pot. War was kind of inevitable - but could have been avoided.

After ww1 the monarchy was owerthrown and a new state proclaimed which comprised todays Austria + South Tyrol + the Sudetenland + some smaller parts with german majorities - the Burgenland. The state was officialy called Deutschösterreich and was seen as a part of the German Republic (written in the constitution). Unfortunately, the state didn't last long. In Versailles it was robbed of land, renamed to Republic Austria and a merger with Germany was forbidden.
Yes both Versailles and St Germain, but of course in reality German Bohemia and the Sudetenland had already been taken over by the Czech army in Dec. 1918-Jan 1919, under the command of none other than Ferdinand Foch

A man who devoted his long life to improving 'the lot' of his [rightful] subjects, combatting Nazism [at enormous risk to himself and his] family], and then being refused EVEN the right to live in his homeland, let alone having his STOLEN property returned to him.
He was a SAINT, just as surely as his father the Emperor Karl was a saint.
Austrians ought to hang their heads in EVERLASTING shame for their treatment of a family that NEVER sought anything but greatness and prosperity for the great multicultural empire they had the honour to reign over for HUNDREDS of years..
There is something romantic about this Imperial grandeur.
I'm from South part of Poland, which belonged to Austria-Hungary. Dispite i was born 70 years after collapse of Empire i still have first name thanks to the last emperor - Karl (pol. Karol)
The sentyment for that period is still living with me. Because umder Franz Joseph II and Karl I, Poles have sort of autonomy on Galicia, even two Poles became prime ministers on Austro-Hungariam central government.
Even branch of Habsburgs ( Żywiec Habsburgian) embraced a Polish culture. Stephen Karl Habsburg would be percect Polish king after I WW. His son Karl Albrecht was a Polish soldier. He was banished thanks to communist regime after II WW and all his goods were stolen by communist.
there was no austro-hungarian central goverment, there was only something like that for the austrian half. the hungarian one was purely in the hands of the hungarians while in the austrian one all ethnic groups had people in it
Brilliant work!! Great HD film-making and wonderful historic moment!!
@aardvark154 It's the end of the Imperial line. With the death of Otto von Habsburg, there will be no further interments in the Imperial crypt. Habsburgs will now receive civilian funeral services. As the last member of Habsburg royalty, Otto von Habsburg will be the last member of the family interred in the Imperial crypt.
May he rest in peace from the emperor's country Japan.
what a marvel! all the beauty and splendour... who made us switch to the Savoy leaving the empire!!! 😔😔
And people of Lombardy-Veneto were under Austria...
@@StockyScoresRaoraPantheraFC the best things, full of faith and culture

Girls: do men still have sentiments?
Men:
"Crown Prince Otto of Austria-Hungary etc." We don't know him
"Dr Otto Von Hapsburg etc." We don't know him
"Otto, a mortal, sinful man" So may he come in.
The term Deutschösterreich was not used only by the german nationalists but by everyone. Funny fact: The anthem of the republic was written by our first prime minister Karl Renner who was a social democrat. You can find it on UA-cam, it is called "Deutschösterreich, du herrliches Land".

Please bring back the Monarchy. We now live in a European Union dictatorship.

@nachosan216 i agree. Austria should restore its rich imperial history, culture, tradition, and national identity.
Restore the Austrian Monarchy, Restore the Austrian Identity!
Why do the monks not let him in on his titles alone? Are they waiting to hear he is a humble christian? Just wondering.
Yes, that's the point of the whole ritual, that in death all are equal and have sinned before God.
kate weiss Also, the Capuchins live their lives isolated from worldly affairs and concern themselves with Godly and heavenly affairs. They are men of prayer and are for no man yet for all men.
+kate weiss This is a reminder for those alive that before God no titles and ranks matter, and we are all sinners who need mercy.
Thank you.

You know you got the power when your name contains "österreich"
Long live the Emperor.
Lets hope that by the time Karl II passes away the monarchy will be restored and this can be done again. Down with that horrible sick republic!
Legyen áldott a király emléke! Viribus Unitus!
Yes, I always forget the distinction b/t beatification & canonization, & I've never quite understood it. You're either a saint or not. They Church is only acknowledging a fact that God has guided them to in their infallable discernment. Karl I was certainly a wonderful man & his wife seems to have been his equal. Maybe he will do more good as a saint rather then as an emperor re: the future of Europe.
Beautiful.
Very moving and dignified.
There is an echo to his rythem.
Long live and soon return of the truly Catholic Monarchs and Emperors. AMGD

You mean Saint-Germain? Versailles is for Germany alone.
Yes both Versailles and St Germain, but of course in reality German Bohemia and the Sudetenland had already been taken over by the Czech army in Dec. 1918-Jan 1919, under the command of none other than Ferdinand Foch
