Maestro - Movie Review

Maestro is a 2023 American Biographical Drama Film which is directed by and stars Bradley Cooper as composer Leonard Bernstein, with his wife Felicia Montealegre being played by Carey Mulligan. The film is all about their relationship and how they grow together after meeting at a party, with Bernstein becoming a well-known conductor / composer, and the story reviewing their relationship and subsequent lives.
It premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival on September 2nd 2023, before getting a limited theatrical release November 22nd 2023, and a wider release on Netflix on December 20th. It has received positive reviews and was nominated for 4 golden globes (best actor, actress, director and original score). Initially, Scorsese was going to be the director, but he stepped down, allowing Spielberg to take the reins, who after seeing ‘A Star is Born’ offered the role of lead and director to Bradley Cooper.
The opening contains a quote from Bernstein which I have to say, is outstanding “A work of art does not answer questions, it provokes them; and its essential meaning is in the tension between the contradictory answers.” This is something that everyone can relate too, the idea that art is supposed to make us feel something or provide an answer to the questions that we have, instead, it is what leads us to ask questions and derive our own answers.
