99 Homes - Movie Review
Hi!
This was one of those films that I heard of when released and was interested in watching it mainly due to Andrew Garfield starring in it (It was released back in 2014, same year as TASM 2), which basically means I was at the height of appreciating everything that the TASM cast were working on. But I never got around to watching the film, would forget it exists, then not be able to find it, but Netflix finally added it, so my excuses no longer were valid. After watching the film, my excuses kept me away from an amazing film, that I am already looking forward to experiencing again.
Story
The film follows Garfields character who after being evicted from his family home by Shannon, has to find somewhere for his mother and son to live while being unemployed / struggling for money in Florida during the Great Recession. Due to the situation, Garfield finds himself helping Shannon while he continues to evict other people in exchange for the opportunity to get his family home returned to him.
Cast
The film stars Andrew Garfield, Laura Dern and Michael Shannon, with all 3 putting in solid performances, but Shannon stole the show for me, he was equal parts menacing and alluring. The way in which we get introduced to his character is meant to demonstrate to us how evil and cruel he is as a person with limited remorse being afforded to those whom he evicts from their homes. Meanwhile we initially see Garfield trying his best to be a single father, support his mother all in a tough economic situation where he is clearly a hard worker, but one that the system that was in place during the Recession did not respect and was among those most effected by everything that was happening.

Hi! Little Women is a classic novel written in 1868 and the 2019 film adaptation is the 7th of its kind. With that many other iterations of the characters out there, it isn't easy to try and distinguish your story alongside the others which people already know so well. But I feel this film did just that and will manage to stand on its own! The film stars big hitting actors such as Saoirse Ronan...

All Quiet On The Western Front - Movie Review
I have no idea why I was chosen to manage a SLH...I guess so everyone else can shame me for being myself. Once again they asked me "the autistic introvert" to do this.
Maybe they believed you have the ability? All you have to do is prove them wrong & do your best! :D
@@Matts_Views Definitely. I just work better when everyone else is asleep. 😂
Good to have you back Matt. Keep plugging away, the cream (eventually) rises to the top, even if it takes ages
Cheers man! Daily reviews until Monday I think I've scheduled, messed up my timings by a day sadly!
@@Matts_Views excellent, looking forward to them!
Haven't even seen the movie but enjoyed this review. Will give the movie a watch, Saoirse is always good
Cheers man! Yeah 100%, it is a fun time, emotional! That is very true, believe she has a couple of big films coming this year also!
Enjoyed hearing your thoughts... Try out Indian films also. Like 'Kahaani' (Story) 2012.. It's a mystery film.. 💛💛
Oh interesting, will do! The only Indian film that comes to mind is RRR, but i'll check your recommendation out also :D
This puppy is not a happy not at all🤣🤣🤣
No definitely not in the slightest 😂
Omg I love your dog
Thanks :D she's a delight!
She wouldn’t have seen him walking into the sea. It must be something that she imagined. Could he have stayed a day longer at the resort and killed himself? If the scene with the postcard, which sounds like a suicide note (and he is sitting in the same hotel room) happened on the day before they went on the excursion to the mud baths, this means he planned to kill himself before the end of their holiday. Would he have killed himself while on the holiday and just left her there? Or is it more plausible that he stayed there for an extra day, during which he went to buy the rug, wrote a suicide note, and went and drowned himself in the sea. So the drowning scene, the rug-buying scene, and the suicide-note scene would have been shown out of order.
I think it depends on how you view the past. It is likely that Sophie is only seeing such a small section of the trip that was recorded, while the viewer is welcome to spend time in all aspects of the holiday, with us being effectively omnipotent. That is really interesting to think about though, and your split of what scenes fit where, does make sense. I don't believe there is a world where he would have killed himself while she was in his care, so if did happen over there, then the additional day theory that you have is the one that makes the most sense!
@@Matts_Views Thank you. Because the disappearance in the sea was so extensive. The viewer's imaginary breath that he or she took in sympathy has run out, but he still wouldn't float up to the surface. If this was indeed an omniscient narrator's perspective then the length of it seemed decisive. On the other hand, perhaps one shouldn't take it so literally if this is a mixture of retrospection and objectivity. On the other hand still, sometime soon after this scene, we hear the laboured breathing of someone who is struggling to take a breath as if someone is drowning but fights to come up. The whole movie is punctuated with the sound of breathing, and breathing is a motif, with Tai Chi, diving, and other things... Thank you very much for your beautiful review. Such a haunting film.
@@conferenceclips4940 Yes it was indeed, I thought it was the end in that moment without thinking about the ramifications. That is very fair, I need to rewatch it if I'm completely honest, only watched it once thus far. Yeah, the use of breath and how it can be focused in meditation, Tai Chi etc are all elements of the film that are kept in the background but repeated so many times, that the end of his life I think, can only be punctuated by an inability to get that final breath. Thank you for watching and (hopefully) enjoying :)
That’s such a nice dog
Thanks! She's a delight
Número 1😊
Always! Never lets me down 😂
Que lindo ☺️ soy tu fan ☺️
How many yous are there at the start? Like let's say your born, thats the first you... but is it? Of your mom eat a spicy food you might have been born a day sooner so there's to yous. And then with that logic every choce your mother made led to another parlunvers with another you, and any chose any one around you made would have done the same, all would still have your mom and unborn you. So could there be thousands of you befor your even born?
Sounds like a yes with the logic from Everything Everywhere All At Once! With each choice creating a world outside of our current one. Of course in reality, thats less true. Every choice made for us doesnt have a big effect unless it becomes a core memory or similar. But the choices we do make, yes they have effects!
Bro wow like amsterdam is beautiful
Yeah its a lovely spot! Great to have everything so close too, solid transport. Couldn't ask for a better trip 👌
@@Matts_Views I've only seen pictures of it and my mom visited there for work
@turkish_meme_guy Ah fair! Yeah its a good spot, easily accessible!
Absurd you think parties back then were like that. It's a strip club
Don't think you'd get away with having parties like that in the modern era unless you are extremely wealthy 😂
@Matts_Views it's a holiday party. Sometimes the rest of america hires cabaret dancers, sometimes we rent out a six flags, car dealers hire blow jobs but ya know salesman and all like that kind of thing. What's dumb is hollywood rents out venues on weekends, typically holiday parties are on a weekday.
brilliant :)
Thank you :)
This speaks to my soul!!! 😭😭 Many who have met me through Twitter or UA-cam assume I’m so outgoing lol, but in real life I don’t talk much and can be painfully awkward 😅 I’ve really missed hearing you speak and share your thoughts! You explain things so well. That was really helpful in understanding the situation concisely since I haven’t had time to look into it more. Plus I love your idea for different options-the verified tic for public figures and a different kind of symbol for those who pay to have special features. I’ve missed you! Happy to see a video from you! Also I’m not sure if I’ve seen you with a beard before; I like it!
Thanks Anna! Yeah it seems like no matter what there is going to be a pay to play system getting implemented, so why not just provide 2 price points! Seems common sense for me, and gives different options for people. Haha thanks, yeah had been a while. Just couldn't get the idea out of my head, so did this instead :)
Thanks for sharing! I'm even more excited to read that book now! It's sitting on my shelf and it's the next one on my list to be read!
Never realised I hadn't responded Anna -_-! Did you go on to read it? Atomic habits is another great read in the similar genre :)
I really liked this video! :) Well done! Soooo I didn't use to consider myself a procrastinator, but I think it has gotten worse over these past few years. I've found that my procrastination is often connected with my perfectionism. I mean, sure, I get distracted and accidentally procrastinate sometimes, but I've found that the more something stresses me out, the more I procrastinate on starting it. Starting is the hardest part for me. I will find (and rationalize) anything else to do other than the thing I'm supposed to be starting lol. I'm like you in that making plans and lists helps me a ton. When I'm having an especially difficult time, sometimes I even plan my time down to the hour 😅 Also, ACCOUNTABILITY helps me a lot personally as (what Gretchen Rubin would call) an Obliger. :) Like telling someone "hey, I'm going to get this done by this time." I don't like to disappoint people.
I get that! Wanting to get something perfect would result in delaying it! Getting started is definitely the hardest thing to do.... but once you do, it all changes! I couldn't plan using actual time, I'd get stressed haha YES! From my memory anything I have ever said I have done, I feel that big time.
i am TERRIBLE at procrastinating. i feel the only thing that works is doing lists in the morning and then not allowing myself to do anything else than those. also get out of my comfort environment aka my flat, if i go to a cafe i'll more likely actually finish my task than if i was at home
That's interesting! I don't think I'd do the tasks I'm meant too if I left the house at all haha!
I loved this video so much! You had me smiling (and even tearing up a little bit). Thank you for sharing this. I was truly inspired by the lessons you learned. I especially loved your point about loving the process. You are so right--the goal we're aiming for is just a small tiny part of it all, so if we don't enjoy the process, why even do it? That's something I've been trying to do more this year. I even have an image as my phone's lock screen that says "Enjoy the Journey." I am so very proud of you, friend!
Thanks so much Anna! Yeah, its one of those things, everyone says it, but you don't comprehend it until you do it! I trained for 20 weeks, but ran for 4 hours. Bit of a disparity there 😂
I just got The Power of Habit for Christmas! It's been on my reading list for YEARS! So excited to finally get to read it. I've also heard a lot of great quotes from Man's Search for Meaning and want to read that. I just bought Better Than Before by Gretchen Rubin. Going to read that and The Power of Habit to prepare for a potential new blog series after the summer. :) I'm currently finishing up The Fellowship of the Ring and then also a nonfiction book called From Poop to Gold: The Marketing Magic of the Harmon Brothers (the guys that made those viral ads for Squatty Potty and Poopouri lol)
Duhig makes it so accessible and makes it seem so easy to create new habits, that we begin to question why we aren't creating them consistently! Have you had a check into Mans Search for Meaning? I'm considering a re-read, it is great to remember that we can't continue in life without a reason for doing so. I have never read LoTR...... Had just become such a big series, that I skipped over it, tried The Hobbit twice, but could never finish it...
"Now I'm not buying anymore books" ... yeah right 😉
Felt like a lie the second I said it tbh 😂
Nice little haul Matt!!
Thanks Hannah! Can't beat some books!
I love it! What a cool looking wardrobe and I love that your desk can fold down to make more space if you need it. Well done! Enjoy it! 😊 It’s a great feeling to rearrange your space and get it organized again.
Thanks Anna! I'll do my best to enjoy it alright :) awh, looking back at this video already has me thinking how I managed to live that way for so long!
This looks SOOO good!! Also I don't think I've ever seen a guy's room with that many clothes haha
Thanks Hannah! That's even throwing some out..... I clear out every few months! Haha
What a fun day! Oh my gosh, Ireland is so beautiful! 😃
It was a great sight! And all together, it only took 4 / 5 hours of my day! 😁
hahaha I love your level of commitment. I, on the other hand, did not even watch it. 😅 I totally agree with you about Ready Player One. I LOVED that movie and was completely mesmerized the whole time! And watching A Quiet Place in the theater was an eerie experience. Everyone was too nervous to even eat their popcorn; no one dared move!

Thanks Anna! I do my best, at least, I like to think I do 😂
Oh my gosh, I didn't know your commute was quite so long! That's so so great that your new job is so close! Ahhhh I'm so happy for you! Think of all the extra time you'll have! :D

I've been wanting to look into this more. I made a worksheet on my site for people to track their energy levels during their average day to help them figure out their most productive hours. I am definitely a morning person. I've learned that I will almost always start to get sleepy at the same time of day (and continue to get sleepier into the evening), but if I get up earlier (no earlier than 5am probably though) I actually gain hours of productivity, so I'm trying to form the habit of getting up at 6am every morning. It's hard to get up but once I'm up then that's the best my brain will work all day. I've tested this and so I know this works for me, personally. Have you heard of Dr. Breus's work with the body's inner clock and "chronotypes"? I took the quiz once, but I'm not entirely sold on it. I'd look to read his book and learn more though. We all have a similar circadian rhythm, but there seem to still be some major differences in people or else we wouldn't have people who swear they work best at night and others who work better in the morning. Honestly, I think a lot of it has to do with conditioning though, as well as our environment (i.e. the times of day in a busy mom's schedule that she actually can have quiet time to think, etc.). I'm really interested to learn how much is biological and how much is from our environment and routines. Also, my doctor has taught me some more as I was experiencing an issue with my serotonin/melatonin/cortisol sleep/wake cycle and had to start taking a supplement to get it back to normal.
UA-cam marked this as Spam haha Yeah, I can't get over people who are night owls, I don't know how they do it! No can't say I have, I'll give his book a look though, thanks :) Ahhhhh, that's really interesting, I always wondered how we have different outlooks on when we do our best work, but I guess that's makes the most sense!
You are such an inspiration to me, Matthew! Also, what a gorgeous view of the sea!
Thanks Anna! Vice versa is true too! It can be rather nice alright!
Whoops. I commented, but it looks like it never posted. I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed these videos! It was so fun to see glimpses of your trip! Especially considering I haven't been to New York! Now I know I'll have to go someday around Christmas time!
