- The okatava MK 012 is one of the best budget out of frame boom microhpones for indoor dialogue. So today I will test all three capsules on my desk, how do they sound off axis? and which is the best for booming the omnidirection vs cardioid vs hypercardioid capsules.

I love the Oktava MK-012 series. The Hypercardioid capsule is phenomenal sounding.
I have the oktava with hypercardoid capsule and I absolutely love it. Works great for untreated space.
it was my first boom mic a purcahsed and as mentioned in the video regretted selling it. As i plan on comparing lots of my boom mics the next few months I really wanted to start with the first one I purchased. I forgot how much sound you get for what is a realtivly cheap price

This sounds absolutely amazing with the hypercardioid and your video influenced me to go out and buy a set on eBay for $275
Curious though is this in an untreated, semi treated, or treated room?
I watched the whole video. I have no idea what I would need the omni directional capsule for, but I still wanted to hear what it would sound like. I've been watching videos on this mic for a long time and have seen so many. It is just incredible for what it costs. I don't know if I will ever have a Schoeps. That's a lot of money. What modification and what result are you looking to have done with your mic? I know the old ones (about 10 years old now) had to be modified to make them "real good," but I've not heard of anyone modifying the newer production units. I'll be getting one for filmmaking, so of course I will be getting one with just the super-cardioid capsule.
I very much doubt I’m ever going to use the omni but seeming as I have all three capsules I might as well test them. As for the modification it’s true that Oktava have improved the recent models but there is still some improvements from the mod in regards to improving self noise a tad and making the top end sound a bit smoother. I am still undecided if I will get it done.
As for the schoeps after selling my original Oktava I have owned the rode ntg3 + 5, audix sc x1 hc, Neumann km185 and rycote hc 15. All fantastic microphones with some being a nice upgrade over the Oktava, but they never felt like they were worth the extra investment I always felt the want for more.
After months of deciding between the schoeps and mkh50 I decided the schoeps due to being able to add more capsules as my workflow grows. Yes it was a lot of money but it was a for life investment. Schoeps have been supporting the same collete system since the 70s so I know this thing will last me a lifetime.

Ah, I'm in a pickle. Can't decide between NGT 3 (350 $ - used), Oktava mk012 (350$), Beyerdynamic MC930 (470$) and WA-84 (380$) for streaming/online lessons. My setting is untreated room with dogs barking outside the house. I would work in front of my PC.

Where are you going to get it modified? I thought they stopped doing modifications?
I still haven’t got round to it but being uk based I was planning to order the parts from here and get a friend of mine to do the mod

hi did you purchase case the three capsules set or just a single capsule? the hyper cardioid is the most directional of octaves capsules
