I don't think people realize just how stacked this Penguins team was. Mario, Coffey, Recchi, Francis, Jagr, Murphy, Trottier, Mullen, Bob Johnson. That's 9 HOF members when 68 stop playing in 10 years and he gets in. LOL
I forgot how dominant the Pens were this game , despite all the power plays given to the Stars. Great win and a statement to the style the Stars futile game plan.
I watched the SportsChannel America broadcast and was really rooting for the Cinderella North Stars. Sad to think this was the closest Minnesota came to winning the Stanley Cup and the team would be gone two years later.
This was an exciting time for all hockey fans of my generation. The Habs run, the Islanders and then the Oilers. With a few odd years and a lucky Stanley cup taken by the Habs and then the Flames, now came the Penguins. Who didn't think that they wouldn't go for their own run? At least they became back-to-back winners and that is no easy feat. I honestly did not recall the chippiness and outright violent play as witnessed in this final. I suppose I was just used to it by then. It certainly wasn't a pretty style of hockey.
It pained me to add comment #67...66 comments just seemed right! BUT I remember watching this on SportsChannel America, before the NHL had a major TV contract, and being a 16 year old Pens fan in Caps-land wasn't easy...it got easier after this first Cup win and then the domination of the Caps began and 4 more Cups! MISS #66! There will NEVER BE ANOTHER
I remember the carnival atmosphere of the North Stars being in the Stanley Cup Final merch was actually sold on the streets 2 years later they were gone
The first Stanley Cup Final since 1964 to not feature either the Canadiens, Islanders, Flames, Oilers, Flyers or Bruins. Also, the last Cup Final to end before the month of June, first all-American Cup Final since 1981 (the last time the North Stars were in the Final), first Cup Final since 1982 not to feature either Alberta teams (Oilers and Flames) and first American team to win the Cup since 1983.
Paul Coffy must be the lucky defenseman in NHl history ,he played with some of the greatest Centers in NHL history ,Lemieux before that that bum call Gretzky ,then later a center name Yzerman Fedorv Lindos ,
NONE of the current NHL player had survived one shift during the 90's. Samuelsson alone had crushed everyone, even Mario Lemieux had steamrolled over absolutely every of the current NHL players. It was indeed a vastly different sport then compared with now.
"Casey don't know wether to cry or wined his watch""..😄 With the Rule changes Minnesota would've had 100 interference penalties called on them today. 😵 The best Team ever, That Penguins Team would've won the Gold against any team in the Olympics. 92/93 was even better team, except for Dave Volek of Islanders in overtime ruined that back 2 back chance.😔
I miss the hockey from that era. Of course in the hindsight the fighting is not good. But seriously it's incredible to see how soft NHL has became now. European soccer is so much more intensive and tougher than NHL, and it has been so for like 10 years now. NHL players only gets smaller and smaller, lighter too for every year now. They had been killed if now they played on this game.
Again... It's insane how soft NHL has became now. No of the current NHL player had survived during that era with constant hooking, holding, slashing etc... Also players (outside goalies of course) now are so much lighter and has a lot less equipment along with ZERO obstructions, so no wonder that players now appears to be faster then. Just products by their time.
Sorry Penguins fans, but your home team announcer and his side-kick are very long winded and annoying to listen to. But the good new is there is no WORSE play-by-play announcer than Mike Emrick!
Agreed! Emrick's voice was like fingernails on a chalkboard. So happy he's finally gone, cuz now I won't have to mute the audio during playoff and Finals games.
what a joke this competition is compared to modern hockey. its so obvious how much better modern players are than “greats” from the 90s 80s and earlier decades. gretzky most overrated sportsman in history. the goalies are horrible.
Not true. Mario Lemieux had easily scored +150 goals per season in his prime. There're zero defense in current NHL since it's a ultra-strict no contact policy so every of the current NHL stars are untouchable then. Mario could barely having 1 second on the ice without having 1-3 players holding on him, you wont sees anything alike today.
Its insane the Jager is still playing pro hockey as of 2023

Barrasso now too
Craig Patrick GM, Scotty Bowman (player personnel) too

Jim Paek! One of my favorite obscure Penguins.
1st Korean NHLer
@@spanky9676 Paek later coached South Korea’s 2018 Olympic team when it had an automatic berth as the host country.
Shoutout to the Minnesota Fans for supporting the Penguins after the game and as they lift the cup
Yes you're welcome. Pittsburgh played great deserved the Cup!
They were classy! I still maintain had the North Stars played any other Wales conference team, They would've won the cup.
If they only knew that 2 stormy years were coming for the team after this season
@@garypvamos2508They would have been the first losing team ( regular season) to win the Stanley Cup since the 1938 Blackhawks
Why not? In two years they wouldn't have their own team to support
Lemieux is the goat here in 2021 and he has 2 cups as a player and 3 more as an owner I hope we can get another before the end of the Crosby era
In 2024 I believe the Stanley Cup contention window is closing for the Penguins, even with Crosby, Malkin and Letang
What an insane goal by Lemieux @25:51
Thank you to uploading. I wish 1991 Stanley Cup Finals Game 3 Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Minnesota North Stars (Minnesota).
Please.
@@therecorder6386 Thank you.
I really understand as clearly.
This, my friends, is hockey
I watched the SportsChannel America broadcast and was really rooting for the Cinderella North Stars. Sad to think this was the closest Minnesota came to winning the Stanley Cup and the team would be gone two years later.
Mike Lange makes it fun to be a Pens fan
The pens defense and stick checking is legit unrivaled

I started rooting for Penguins in 1984 85 (from Minnesota) hoping Mario would turn things around ( it took a while but he did it)
Jon Casey, Minnesota's Forward, Graduated from my High School in 1985
Rest In Peace badger bob let’s go pens
1:41:03 Final seconds
Man was the game physical back then
70s and 80s were even MORE physical 😅
Ulf Samuelsson... I mean who else would you expect to score the Cup winning goal xD

The game that killed the Minnesota North Stars
Game 5 put the stars on the ropes
I remember the carnival atmosphere of the North Stars being in the Stanley Cup Final merch was actually sold on the streets 2 years later they were gone

Just another Stanley Cup Final without the Maple Leafs
I live in Minnesota I was for Pittsburgh in SC final because of Mario
I just noticed them playing the Indiana Jones theme as the Cup was being presented.
7:11 Ulf’s goal
North Stars for life.
Paul Coffy must be the lucky defenseman in NHl history ,he played with some of the greatest Centers in NHL history ,Lemieux before that that bum call Gretzky ,then later a center name Yzerman Fedorv Lindos ,
He partnered up with some great D-Men, too, including Nicklas Lidstrom and Murphy.
Last game without tenths of a second in the final minute of the period.
Video replay was instituted in 1991-92 , hence the need for the tenths of seconds.
You can count about 10 penalties every shift.
NONE of the current NHL player had survived one shift during the 90's. Samuelsson alone had crushed everyone, even Mario Lemieux had steamrolled over absolutely every of the current NHL players. It was indeed a vastly different sport then compared with now.
A costly stacked vet team versus a mostly young Stars team.

1991 game 5 please
6-4 Penguins
I was there
What was it like to witness this glorifying game
If only Minnesota won the Stanley cup
lol if only
They still would have moved to Dallas 2 years later a Stanley Cup win wasn't going to save the team
Not with those fair-weather fans who only showed up when the team played well.
They still had Norm Green as owner and the MSFC who owned the arena a Stanley Cup win wasn't going to make everyone kiss and make up
Jags was a rookie...
No Kneeing penalty called against Minnesota also refs not wearing helmets back then was dangerous
There were still a few players who didn’t wear helmets in 1991
Some of the refs had helmets
17:24 😂
That S
Mario beat Casey like a rented mule. haha
Dude I died laughing at that, what the hell kinda commentary is that hahaha. Hilarious!
@@evansimpson6652 The Penguins announcer says that.

Yes the oilers have a real bad play-by-play right now

Modern hockey is definitely way softer than this while still being just as fast
The ONLY difference is the goalies being harder to beat now
