This was the first hockey game I ever watched. I was 10 and didn't care for sports much. My dad made me watch from the beginning and who wouldn't become a fan after watching an 8-0 Stanley Cup win??? Became a die hard fan ever since. Wish my dad could've seen them win the last two..
Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, Kevin Stevens, Ron Francis, Joe Mullen, Mark Recchi, Brian Trottier, Larry Murphy, Paul Coffey, Ulf Samuelson and Tom Barrasso winning that Stanley Cup in 1991. That was a good time for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Tom Barrasso sucked. Easily the most overrated Penguin. His numbers are shit and he's the reason the Penguins only won 2 cups with that loaded team. After those 2 cup runs he only won 2 more playoff series. It was scary how much better Ken Wregget was then him and could not get the starting job because of idiots like Eddie Johnston and Craig Patrick, who are overrated figures in Penguins history; Johnston more than Patrick, wanted to keep their buddy in the starting job rather than the best man. You might be thinking that goaltending was weak in the 80s and that's partially true. In the 80s front offices came to the ridiculous conclusion that you couldn't have a high scoring team and good goaltending and that high scoring was more important. That changed with the emergence of Patrick Roy who proved that false and after that teams started looking for high quality goalies. The Penguins seemed to be the last team to get that message. Remember that Barrasso only played half his career in the really open scoring era and the other half in the shutdown era where scoring dropped to an all-time low. Not to mention: Wregget's numbers were better. I've hear Paul Steigerwald refer to Barrasso as "the greatest goaltender to give up 4 goals a game." That may be true but only because all the other goalies that performed that poorly lost their jobs. Tom Barrasso is living proof that success in life is not about what you can do, but who you know. He's only still working in hockey because his good friend happens to be the GM of the Carolina Hurricanes. PS The rest of the players were amazing
Yo, whoever the announcer is, this guy is amazing. His analogies and his enthusiasm are incredible. Had me crying laughing the entire time. Made me feel like I was watching the game back in 91. Lol. I'm not a pens fan, I'm not a yinzer, but damn I feel like 1 listening to him. Also, lemieux is 1 of the greatest hockey players ever.
Mike Lange was the best. I didn't have any tickets for this series but I flew from Denver to back home in Pittsburgh just so I could hear him call the games on TV. It was easy for me to do that since my Dad worked for United.
I've never forgotten that second Pens goal by Lemieux! He totally disregards the Stars back-checker as if he's not even there...something most players can't do. A totally incredible play that only Lemieux can pull off and make it look so easy. Awesome goal!
Mario, Francis, Mullen, Jagr, Murphy, Barrasso, Coffey, and maybe Recchi should all be in the HOF some day. The scary thing is the '92-93 team was even better even though the Isles pulled off the upset.
Ive watched a lot of sports in my life and there was no player I enjoyed watching more. It felt like Christmas morning to me everytime he was on TV. Absolute brilliance.
I remember no one could believe that the Northstars could make it that far in 91. But out of all the Retro teams the Northstars were the only ones to make it to the finals. The Nordiques, Jets, Whalers never came close
Yep, anyone who isn't blind can see it, even on this poor quality VHS recording, but idiot Mike Lange was too busy trying to think of his next stupid saying to use for the next goal to actually do his job and try to describe correctly what actually happened.
Remember exactly where I was - Tall Timber Inn in Leeper. I never thought I would see them win the Cup. Man, oh man, look at Marios' shorty. Greatest scorer EVER.
I was in 5th grade during this run. The goal I remember most from this game was Jim Paek's. How awesome. We were all talking about it the next day during the city-wide celebration
On May 25, 2012, I was watching this Video all day long, even at school when i had time. To celebrate the 21 year anniversary. Congrats Penguins. North Stars will be missed.
I was at all the home games during this series!! I can honestly tell you that the excitement level in the Civic Arena was 100 times what a regular season game was!! The whole place was actually vibrating!!
God Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, Ron Francis, Kevin Stevens, Joey Mullen, Paul Coffey, Larry Murphy, Ulf Samulesson, Peter Taglanetti, Tom Barrasso, that's like an all star team
Man, even though the North Stars got owned in this game, don't feel too bad for them. They may have finished with the sixth-worst record, but made the playoffs because they were fourth in their division. Nobody would have predicted they would eliminate the best team in the league, Chicago, let alone make the finals. Probably one of their more memorable seasons.
How sad, after what they accomplished, that their coach didn't live too long thereafter to enjoy it. And a shout out to PRR5503... I personally like the old school bus yellow on the Pens also. I also like their "techno" logo they used for over a dozen years from 1992.
Best part of this game was Lemuiex passing to Paek for a goal instead of taking the given goal for himself. That was really cool of him. Only thing that could have made this game any better would have been seeing it at the Igloo and watching them hoist the cup in person.
The one goal that they said went off of a North Stars skate did but if you look closer it goes off of Erreys stick after it goes off the skate and then in. It was Erreys goal.
I wish I had a time machine, so I could go back and watch this again live. (Can you imagine if that had happened to Recchi nowadays? No way they'd have let him just go right back to the bench!)
I didn't start paying attention to North Stars hockey til a year later. I'm glad I don't remember this game, holy hell Pittsburgh creamed the North Stars. I was only 6 at the time.
I remember that 1991 run, and as a Penguins fan, I have to say that the North Stars had one hell of a run to the Finals. Beat the #1 overall team, Chicago, beat another top team in St. Louis, and beat the defending champs Edmonton. That is a run to be proud of!
The last Stanley Cup final my grandfather had watched before he passed away in September that year. I love the sport hockey because my grandfather grown up watching it, I'm carrying on the tradition from my grandfather
I'm a native Minnesotan and was a hockey kid from kindergarten (i.e. mites and on). I remember watching this series non stop on MSN (i.e. Midwest Sports Network). Is it me, or was this almost like watching an NHL all star team versus a high school team? The Penguins being the NHL all star team.
I wish I was alive to watch this season. In 1991, my dad was about the same age as me and a huge pens fan. It's really cool that I was able to watch the pens win 3 cups. I also love seeing our star players syd and geno play while my dad had Mario and jagr
I never thought that I'd live to see the Pens win one Cup let alone 5, but this first one was something very special. This was a total beatdown, North Stars got POUNDED this game, they had nothing.......
Richard Toczynski Have you ever actually watched Crosby play?? Go to a game and watch everything her does constantly throughout the game.. He's a tireless worker, skilled as hell, amazing talent.. Oh yeah, 3 cups and championships everywhere he goes. Dumb ass
Crosby all time great but after watching him in isles series. His decline is starting. Nothing major still great player but he is taking his first steps down the hill
@romans52345 And another thing Mario had 6 points in the first 3 games of that series. Neely didn't shut him down before getting wrecked and the Bruins didn't shut him down for the rest of the series. Even in their wildest dreams Neely and the B's couldn't have stopped Mario, who by the way missed 58 regular season games due to back surgery that year. He ended up with 15 points against the Bruins that year and next year put up 8 in 3 games against the B's after missing game 1 of a 4 game sweep.
the fact that when this series started and minnesota was talking about having a parade and acting like they all raised the cup.and the pens went into the jungle and kicked their ass with a shutout was just a little sweeter.
I agree infact the year Lemieux scored 85 goals and had 199 points he did not play all 82 games so if he wouldve played all 82 games he probably wouldve broke the record and if he did not have his hodgekins disease and back problems he wouldve broke all the records you are absolutly right
Minnesota did scrap hard the whole series, but in the end the Pens were just better, and it more then played out in Game 6. Love the ol tandem of Lange and Steigerwald. I find it kind of odd that Lange does say that Mario wrapped up the Conn Symth with that last assist, he probably already had it won by then. But anyways, one of the great moments in Pittsburgh sprots histoy, and the best in Pens history.
I remember this game well. I was 7, the first time I saw a cup winner. My neighbours were having a BBQ but my folks let me watch the game. At every goal I ran over to tell everyone the score. Lol good times!
Mathematically, when factoring just how many games Lemieux missed, based on his points per game, his numbers would have been very close to Gretzky's if he had played his full potential career, assuming Mario continued his pace. The scary thing is, Lemieux accomplished so much, and he was never 100% even when he did play.
Mario Lemieux, Larry Murphy, Paul Coffey, Joe Mullen, Ron Francis, Mark Recchi and Jaromir Jagr; 7 future Hall of Famers, if Jagr will ever retire of course
Jacen Rybock than take Recchi out and add Bryan Trottier who IS in, Recchi has only been out of hockey 4 years, he's top 20 in goals, assists and points, he'll be in the Hall, book it
Poe Javelski Phil Bourque Bob Errey Jim Paek the key to Pittsburgh success was in it's role players not just the stars there were more grinders that helped this team win than stars
@@hugh2hoob668 haha have to disagree with you there. In pittsburgh it was always about the stars. If you took away every one of those players you mentioned they still win back to back cups. But if you took away one of their big dogs they absolutely don't win.
This'll be us again in a few days, Crosby, Malkin, ad Gonchar will hoist that cup, just as Lemieux, Jagr, and Samuelsson did back in '91! Let's Go Pens!
The first Stanley Cup Final since 1964 to not feature either the Canadiens, Islanders, Flames, Oilers, Flyers or Bruins. Also, the last Cup Final to end before the month of June, first all-American Cup Final since 1981 (the last time the North Stars were in the Final), first Cup Final since 1982 not to feature either Alberta teams (Oilers and Flames) and first American team to win the Cup since 1983.
The reason why scoring is so low in the NHL now is you never see defensemen below the circles on offense... which in so many words eliminates the odd man rush... teams are way too conservative. On the power play they play the umbrella instead of over loading and cheating a defenseman down into the play... the overload was what the Oilers did in the 80s and Pens in the early 90s... instead of crashing the net...

@SuperBanesta that is a very, very good point. its crazy to think how much talent was on that team, will there ever be a team with that much raw talent ever again? probably not....
Too bad in a way that the Oilers didn't make the Finals instead that year, although I was extremely happy they didn't at the time because I was getting bored of them winning the Cup with frequency after a while. They were even still a competitive team post-Wayne Gretzky & Jari Kurri and were only a year removed from their last Stanley Cup in 1991.
This was the first hockey game I ever watched. I was 10 and didn't care for sports much. My dad made me watch from the beginning and who wouldn't become a fan after watching an 8-0 Stanley Cup win??? Became a die hard fan ever since. Wish my dad could've seen them win the last two..

Heeeeeee shoots and scores! He beat Casey like a rented mule!
Jennifer Suarez Mike Lange is truly the voice of the Penguins.
1990-91 Pittsburgh Penguins dominant 1991-92 Pittsburgh Penguins dominant 2008-09 Pittsburgh Penguins dominant 2015-16 Pittsburgh Penguins dominant and 2016-17 Pittsburgh Penguins dominant the Pittsburgh Penguins are 5 time Stanley Cup Champions
92-93 pens were AWESOME!! It was their best season ever. Its a shame they chocked in the playoffs.
Mario, Ron Francis, Joe Mullen, Larry Murphy, Paul Coffey, Brian Trottier all Hall of Famers. Plus Jagr, Stevens, Recchi, Ulf, and Barrasso
Got to touch the cup 3 times did not lift it over my head. Seen it 7 times. Have watched every playoff game since 91 even if the Penguins did not make it to the final.. love watching the players skate with the Stanley Cup after they win the Cup....
When did Mike Modano play for Minnesota North Stars?
HEEEEEEEEEEEEEE SHOOTS AND SCORES!
9 hall of famers on that Penguins team.
(sigh) i miss our north stars :'(
@NessMencesal what do you mean??? he could have passed Gretzky in only 2nd gear if he didn't have the injuries.

May 25 1991 A Great day for Hockey
kbl. lets go pens.
looking for the stars broadcast of this game and src-tv also
@SuperBanesta that is a very, very good point. its crazy to think how much talent was on that team, will there ever be a team with that much raw talent ever again? probably not....
Thats crazy how Lemieux is also a fast skater on top of everything else.
Larry Murphy awesome pass
haha, damn, i remember KBL. i used to watch games on either 22 or 53 on UHF, i can't remember which channel lol.
It was 35 where I was lol
Wow goalies have changed. Its bullshit to think hockey will never be the same. It was so easy to score on breakaways
