- "This is an organization of stories. Not just championships, but stories."
Throughout the first fifty years of the franchise, the Pittsburgh Penguins grew and fought through a multitude of adversities. At one point, winning the Stanley Cup seemed like a pipe dream. Through all the tumultuous twists and turns, the Penguins are one of the most successful franchises over the past half-century.

Long suffering Canucks fan here, this video came up in my feed & I ended up glued to it. Truly a great documentary. I always admired Lemieux & his story. He’s an incredible ambassador to the game. Congrats on a great film & franchise.
1994 and 2011 were tough years
Least it’s been a good season for you so far
@@ChosenlawmanSo far… but we always feel the bottom can drop out below us at any time…
Gives you hope
Me but a Montreal fan 😂
Mike Lange is a beauty. I’m from Toronto and a Leafs fan but when he says “scratch my back with a chainsaw” I can’t help but smile.
I’m just getting into the sport of hockey and after watching this documentary, I think I’m going to be a Penguins fan for life
NEVER tire of seeing that skyline coming through the Fort Pitt tunnel! Best Skyline in the country!
I'm not a Pens fan, I've never lived in Pittsburgh, but I'm absolutely absorbed in this documentary. I stumbled upon this, hit play, and found myself watching until 1:30am, because I just had to see Mario and come into their own and win the Stanley Cup. Amazing work.
same ! amazing
I'm from 412. I 100% relate to this though. I don't like or watch baseball, but I watched the whole yogi Berra documentary on Netflix and it was absolutely incredible.
Ditto
Penguins, no matter the situation, no matter the issues and otherworldly setbacks, always seem to bounce back and deliver the goods. Keep bringing the cups Pens!
Been a fan since Mario joined, loved everything about his presence.
And the Penguins Pittsburgh became a city of Champions
Die hard Penguins fan here from South Carolina! All because I chose a Koho Street Revolution hockey stick with Mario Lemieux’s name on it. That was in 1994. Also I was lucky enough to be at Crosby’s comeback game against the Islanders. Our tickets were randomly bought in August for our 1 year wedding anniversary present. We had no idea at that time how perfect this game would be to see.
I had that stick. Kept it for 30 years (the blade was about an inch wide when I handed it to my son) and he left it on the porch one day and it was gone. I'd give anything to have that stick back. Mario was my hero when I was a kid.
Pittsburgh cheated in the draft to get Crosby. There's no luck in him coming to the Penguins. So, three SC were cheats.
I thank the heavens every day I was born and raised in Pittsburgh. I am thankful I get to be a fan of the greatest teams in professional sports. Its an honor to be a Penguins fan!
NEVER should have let Fleury go...BIG mistake. He is such an easy guy to like and is one of The Best Goalies ever.
@@alphadog1961 worst decision ever in Pittsburgh sports history. Letting fleury go soured me.
@@Lorddurango I am not really a Pittsburg fan,but I am a Huge Fan of a Goalie like Fleury,he is still going strong and has the Biggest Smile...It's contageous.(and his old Teamates still Love the Guy)
As a lifelong Pens fan, I have to say, this documentary was one of the best I've ever seen!
Chills, tears, laughter, it gave me all that good stuff !
Let's Go Pens!
🤘😎🤘
Right" even something for the kid's with Pete the team mascot and stuff lol.😅
Maybe Crosby and Karlsson can work some of that Lemieux-Coffey magic this year
Sharks fan here and loving this. The penguins have always been inspirational. Hoping some day it will be our turn.
Sorry for 2016 best of luck in future it will happen
Diehard Blackhawks fans here but really enjoyed this documentary. Pittsburgh is a great city with a proud hockey history.
Have watched this doc about 5 times over the years. Has to be the best documentary about an NHL hockey team.
As a non pens fan I have to say this is an unreal documentary n I’m only at the 53 min mark… all those yrs watching Mario on the early rock’em sock’ems n I now see that the dirty dangle goal against the north stars was in the cup final… unreal
My all time favorite era is the early 90's. Those teams were amazing! Lemieux,Stevens.Jagr,Coffey,Francis....such an offensive juggernaut!
Amazing squads!! Dont forget Tocchet!!
I will never understand how that team only won two Cups. A power play of Lemieux-Jagr-Francis-Murphy-Mullen. That’s five hall of famers. I would put those early 90s Pens squads up against anyone - the 80s Oilers, the 70s Habs, the Islanders dynasty, there isn’t a team in hockey history you could say they’d have no chance against.
David Volek.
@@jreiland07that's just how tough the league was. 2 cups though 🤷 that's nothing to sneeze at.
@@jreiland07 That baffles me too. All that talent and they never won another title in the Lemieux era. I think injuries and illness played a part though. Mario went through constant back problems, anemia and cancer. And Kevin Stevens was never the same after that injury in 1993. I feel like they should've made the finals in at least 1993,1996 and 2001.
Mario - what a super human being. People like you give us hope
And we ended up winning another Cup not long after this documentary
Did this come out in ‘17?
@@Cros9911 yes
Im from pittsburgh and this made me cry happy tears, GO PENS!!!
Me too brother 66
Some people have tv show comforts that they watch over and over, my version of that is penguins documentaries
I love Bob Johnson so much
It's a great day for hockey
RIP
This is my pre season hype video. I’ll be back next year about now watching this
When the Igloo was padlocked, the team had to find a place to practice. My mom worked at Rostraver Gardens and I was very young, 4 in '75. I don't remember too much, but I do know I wasn't allowed to go into the rink area when the team was practicing. I was allowed to scavenge for pucks in the bleachers afterwards, though. I still have two that I found back in the day. The team was gracious enough to sign a sheet of paper my mom sent down to the locker room at their last practice at the Gardens. She took it with her when she left that job. We also have a packet with photos of all the players, coaches, management and ownership they handed out. Oh, the hair and moustaches! Colin Campbell had a Prince Valliant haircut.
What a story! Thats fantastic!
Very cool. You should make a quick video, show the photos, tell the story!!!
That would rock!!
Cheers from Canada
I'm curious, which team was this team? What did they achieve at that time? Have you been involved in any other similar activities or events that have led to a deeper interest in hockey?
As a lifetime Habs fan, the Pens have always been my second favorite team. What a franchise, wish I would've been around during the Mario days.
I also wish I was there “during the Mario days”
I was there during the Mario days and I'll tell you what, everyone who didn't get to enjoy watching him play is missing out on elite greatness.
Same for Michael Jordan.
Gretzky and Lemieux really made the NHL exciting to watch. We may never see players like that again.
@@bmoshareholderappleshareho855I know one thing I’m going to say is considered heresy 😏 but as a kid in the 80s - Gretzky never impressed me. I mean, yeah, he scored a lot of points, but he just didn’t seem to have any personality & he wasn’t good looking at all. (Such was my train of thought as an 11 year old girl) but I immediately noticed Mario. It might sound stupid to say but, besides his brilliance on the ice, he just had this aura around him. Mario was MAJESTIC. I had relatives in Pittsburgh and they were telling me all about Jaromir and he had IT too; the only way I can describe Jags is RADIANT. If you weren’t lucky enough to see him play then it’s a shame, because his smile, his personality and his ability to take over a game - he lit up the entire arena. To me they were both the “complete package” in a way Gretzky never was. I feel blessed that I was able to watch them in their prime playing together at the Civic Arena. I never saw any other teammates in hockey who had that kind of chemistry on the ice before them - and I’ve never seen it since. I’ve always felt like Jags never received the credit he deserved for how dominant he was in the late 90s, but I’m thrilled his 68 is hanging up right alongside Mario’s 66. My aunt in Pittsburgh said it best: “You don’t think of 66 without 68, and you don’t think of 68 without 66. It’s always going to be Mario and Jaromir” 😎
not even a pens fan, huge crosby fan tho , this documentary was great, going to be a sad day when sid retires.....hopefully e.k65 can help them win one more before the sid era is up
This documentary on the Penguins franchise was very well-done. I first became a Pens fan back in the early 1970s and remember the struggles the team went through at times and I can't think of a more "resilient" franchise than this one!
I could watch this every day
There isn't a franchise in sports that is more inspiring to the human spirit than the Penguins. None. And Mario put it on his back and inspired millions in the process.
Hello et Bonjour, from Montreal Quebec.
Hope everything is well in the Steel City and the home of Film Director, George A. Romero( R.I.P.), who brought us the first Popular, modern,(non-Voo-doo) Zombie film!
The director of Night of the living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead, (along with dozens of wonderful, genre defining films), is a personal Hero!
We can't mention Romero without at least bringing up the Master of Monster Movie effects, Tom Savini. A genius in his own right and another Pittsburg native, he created the original look of Jason Voorhees. The Slashing, Goalie mask wearing Monster, from 'Friday the 13' and many more!
Here is where I would love to say Mr. Savini put the Hockey mask on Jason but alas, that would only occur in part 3 and Tom was working on a different, Blood drenched film at that time.
So although I am a Montreal Canadiens fan, My favorite NFL team has been The Steelers, since the mid 80's. I hope to one day visit your city and catch a NFL, or NHL game. Maybe even the Pirates too :)
Salut from Montreal (Home of the team that won the first and last games, at the Igloo, In Pittsburg! (not certain if the documentary mentions this).
Sorry but we haven't had much to cheer about here lately. Although we have our Playoff wins over the Crosby led Penguins, to be proud of.
Nothing personal, mes amis (my friends).
Die hard red wings fan here but even I gotta give respect to “super Mario” lemieux, one of my all time favorite players
Yeah agree.. wasn't looking for this but simply a great story, well told. tears and joy - worth watching
Badger Bob left us too soon. If he would have stayed several more years, this team could have won four Stanley Cups in the 90's.
He was tremendous, only one season here but he took them to "the top of the mountain" as he called it...
No offense to 'Badger Bob' but his replacement, just happened to be the best coach in NHL history.
Just because they blew it against the Isles, didn't mean the party was over but sometimes you find yourself in a confrence that is very, very tough. The Rangers were on a mission, Lemaire brought the trap and Pittsburg's window closed...for 10 to 15 years. Then they won the lottery, literally!
Not much sympathy coming your way at this point ;)
I'm sorry but besides Mario's Lukemia. The Penguins were a very lucky franchise, starting with the Mario pick.
That's not to say, they didn't rpe Hartford and didn't make many more, smart moves, over the years but to win the cup more than 2 years in a row, takes legendary management and a lot of good luck along the way.
Cheers from Canada
So the dvd I got from my charity bag in 2017 is now on UA-cam. I saw it first. Got a Kessel auto puck from that back. Still use the gym bag for PT.
Let’s go pens
It's one of the best hockey documentaries ever. It is like re-livingi the past in real time.

The Crosby line has one more left in them. It won’t be long now
I screen shot your comment to look il back When There going to win it
So happy I got into hockey, greatest team to support and watch
Rangers fan for my entire 65 years, I think I like the Pens now...:)
I'm curious what made you change your team preference? Was it because of the team's performance, the players' style, or something else? Maybe you could share your preferences and opinions about the two teams so I can get a better idea of your journey as a football fan!
Trottier is amazing
the Story about penguin pete at the beginning had me howling xD
Les Penguins ont toujours été une équipe aimée des Québécois et Canadiens! Excellent video! ❤️
Avec Briere, Pronovost, Dion, Larouche et Lemieux!!!

I LOVE YOU, PENGUINS!!!
Man those 1997-2000 robo penguin sweaters need to be re-created
I love the robo Penguin but it does seem a little like there cursed
Oh boy does this bring back some great memories. ❤
I LOVE THE PITTSBURGH PENGUINS! Highlights like these remind me of why I’m so proud of where I grew up.
Absolutely top documentary about history of Penguins and NHL and people who love ice hockey thank you ❤
I'm a habs fan, I watched every single second of that video. Even paused it when I went pee.
Amazing video, but now i'm late on my day schedule. Didn't expect this 2 hours 47 minutes and 59 seconds ago.
I remember writing a paper on Lemieux as a kid. One of the best, for sure! 😊
I cried about 6 different times watching this!!...LETS GO PENS!!!
Ill be a Pens fan forever this was an Epic documentary it was put together perfectly and all the perseverance the city and the team went through is a story worth sharing so thanks! ❤
Wasn't this documentary posted onto UA-cam, several years ago?...
I think it was, but, I don't remember.
It was streamed the reposted
Verdun, Montréal, Québec….thank you! What can we say in Pittsburgh but thank you?
How am I just now seeing this!
It’s clear there was more character moments back then than there is now. Players smiling from ear to ear, tapping the goalies on their heads with sticks, the celebrations. Not show boating but genuine happiness and excitement. Something that lacks today
bruins fan. great doc.
I like the original uniforms the blue and the white ones with Pittsburgh spelled out diagonally
This is fantastic, thank you so much for putting this together.
This was a fantastic tribute documentary! Thank you!
The greatest team ever! A lifetime long lovestory… 🐧❤
LMAO
Penguins fan from Latvia we will rise again.
Another ship coming this year. Thank you mario
The Best Team in the World 🔥🚨🙌
I've been a fan of hockey since the first expansion in 67-68. The most memorable night for me was the night Sittler scored 10 against Philadelphia. I do not particularly like the Leafs, but as a fan of hockey, I will never see anything like that again. My 2nd was Henderson in game 8 of the summit series in '72, Mario's comeback for me was the third all time event in hockey history.
What a great history! I have been to Philadelphia but next trip to Pennsylvania will be to Pittsburgh.🇨🇦
Fabulous documentary on the Penguins! Loved it!
Perfect in march. Let’s go pens!
Awesome video guys!
RIP Pete

I agree with you on cup and finalists on the list. I enjoy watching your show
Reupload or deja vu feeling because I feel like I've seen the title before.
It's a re-upload, but worth the second watch!

Fantastic Doc!! What a history!
What a great documentary ………great team!!!!!!
Amazing documentary Go PENS Pittsburgh magic!!!

This was fantastic,
How determined cannot pick your bag up sounds insane to still play
love this doc
I play for the Penguins farm teams junior affiliate
I would like Talbot to have more part of this franchise 2009 style
If it weren't for Mario the team would no longer exist. I've always liked the Pens. Fortunate that the team was able to get Mario and survive cause had they not it'd be a parking lot at the arena right now.
And if it wasn’t for “The Chief”, Art Rooney, Pittsburgh wouldn’t have even had the Penguins in the first place.
Lemieux is the GOAT
Great video!
Many thxn for this vid
Great doc! Classy franchise.
This is incorrect. Milton and Emily Roberts named the penguins. They were awarded season tickets and color tv for the choice. In the early 2000’s they were honored at intermission during a home game. They were awarded a Lemieux autographed jersey as well as a few other items.
Incredible
They're lucky to have picked generational players at the right time.
I hope Lavoie has an incredible camp and makes the Oilers !!! 💪😂

The Leafs last 50 years has been a continuous disaster. Congrats to the Penguins for their rich history of greatness.

Never knew that about Rooney, what a Pittsburgh legend.
Art Rooney, aka The Chief, had so much influence in Pittsburgh as the owner of the Steelers that he helped get Pittsburgh the Penguins in the mid-1960s.
