This album certainly changed the life of my friends and I back in 1989. Well before Nirvana, or any of what would become known as 90’s Alternative/Grunge, Jane’s shows were bringing together the underground of punks, metalheads, hippies, goths and glam rockers, skaters and surfers, art rockers, new wavers, straights and gays, freaks and geeks etc, etc, etc… Their shows were like a gathering of the tribes. Glad you enjoyed it.
I saw them in Portland at La Luna in 1989, and the scene was just as you describe, vis-a-vis the diversity of the fan base. Top 3 live show I've ever been to in what is now 40 years of going to concerts.
This song was 'inspired' by Ted Bundy - the recording at the beginning was him. It's more or less exploring the relationship between sexuality and violence (obviously), but also the role of media & culture in stoking our obsession with sensationalism. It's ironic that JA's three most popular songs by far (the Entourage tune, "Jane Says", and "Been Caught Stealing") are all VERY different from most of their catalog. This one was much more representative of what they usually sound like. It's funny you mentioned Chino Moreno, because he lists JA as one his influences. In fact , JA were a hugely influential group in the alternative music movement. Like the Pixies and Jesus & Mary Chain, their legacy lives on more through the music they inspired than through their own mainstream success. Their best two albums, IMO, are Nothing's Shocking (where this song came from) and Ritual de lo Habitual. If you want more epic stuff like this, check out "Three Days". It's a masterpiece. If you're looking for more hard rock (like the end section of this), try "Ocean Size" or "Stop". But you can hardly go wrong, even with the 'out there' stuff, as long as you're open to the idea of experimentation within the context of traditional music structure.
An astute analysis; I go back and forth on which was better, 'Nothing's Shocking' or 'Ritual' although they really only made 3 great albums. You excluded their eponymous 'Jane's Addiction' record, which is fucking excellent. Also, the 'Classic Girl' EP compilation is very good.
I love Jane's Addiction and this song is one of their best. It sounds like it's from the 90s but this came out in 1988. I recommend Ocean Size for their harder edge and Then She Did for their softer side.
Nothing's Shocking is the best Post-Punk (for lack of a better category), album of the 80's! Janes Addiction set the stage for all the "alternative" bands that followed. Thanks for reacting to this! Summertime Rolls off this record is a masterpiece You and Tasha would both enjoy it! And then there is Three Days of Ritual. One of the greatest songs of the 90's!
Back in the late 80's, early 90's I used to trip acid in my buddies basement apartment and he had a giant poster of that album cover on his wall. It literally breathes to the beat of this song. Used to freak me out lmao....
I watched them live in São Paulo this week, and they played "Then She Did". Perry got teary eyed at times, it was such an emotional and personal performance, that song was incredible live
Also…it’s about Bundy, but you have to understand, it was at the time when we realized serial killers were a thing. There wasn’t even a word for it until like 1980. Bundy was still alive when this song was recorded. People were outraged that he hadn’t had his sentence imposed yet.
Great video. Made me realize how well produced the recording is, and how absolutely chaotic it becomes. In terms of development and movement it goes right off the rails.
Ocean Size was the first Jane's Addiction song I heard. It was 1988, I was listening to KISW in Seattle, the DJ said something like "this next band is the new Guns N Roses. Wait til you see the album cover", then played something that sounded absolutely nothing like GNR. I was confused. I was intrigued. I bought a copy as soon as I was able to get to a record store without my mom anywhere near by.
'89 I was a total metal head -Thrash, Punk, Hardcore. Heard this album in my friend's older sister's car and it changed my life and broke me out of that single-paradigm.
This song isn’t 90s. It’s timeless. I’m 47. Grew up in the 90s going to a ton of shows here in LA. Somehow I didn’t catch on to Janes Addiction. Went to see Smashing Pumpkins on Nov and JA opened and they blew me away. Then they did a show at the Palladium last month and they blew me away again. I knew THIS song from the Natural Born Killers soundtrack. It was the epitome of the movie. Chaos. Melodies, anarchy, everything.
Hi , loved your break down of janes addiction , they always take you on a journey, 3 days is one of my favourites but buckle up it’s a long one but definitely worth it. I do have a version of Jane says that crescendo’s into sympathy for the devil by the Rolling Stones on cassette , which is amazing, but I can’t find it on you tube , hope you enjoy
This is a 10/10 song for me. The topic itself is such a cool concept to write about. The estranged songs they are producing give it such an eary vibe while maintaining a nice groove. They gradual build up leading to the ending riff can reflect how quick someone mentally someone can go over the edge. That also might explain how the words get more primitive throughout the song “sex is violent”. I can tell this song was carefully constructed just because everything flows perfectly with each other. And that ending riff just fucking kicks ass
Love this song!!! This is very unique as is Janes. One of my top 5 favorite bands. You should check out Summertime Rolls and Three Days if you want your mind blown
I grew up a few blocks away from Kevin Connolly of Entourage. We went to school together. We were acquaintances. He was in Rocky V while in high school.
A bit late here, but please give Three Days and Then She Did a listen. There is also Mountain Song and Summertime Rolls from the same album as Ted ... Ignore everything the put out after Ritual de lo Habitual.
Man, I hope this reaction goes well. I'm so ... RRRRRRR, however. This is the only meh track on the entire album. And it's an amazing, fantastic, flabbergastingly fucktasticly amazing, not to mention iconic, album. "Ocean Size" and "Had A Dad" are probably the best, along with "Mountain Song", "Pigs In Zen" and "Summertime Rolls". At the time, though, my favorite was "Standing In The Shower, Thinking". I guess it's impossible for them to do wrong, though. On those two albums. I don't know the reunited stuff at all. If it were that great, people would talk about it more.
I had to give thumbs down on this. Blast me as being a "prude", but do you have to show the pornographic album cover? And did Jane's Addiction reall have to MAKE a pornographic album cover!?
Dave's solo on 3 Days is going to blow his mind. Seriously most underrated guitar solo in the history of rock.
SUMMERTIME ROLLS

So cool! I wish I could’ve been there, but I was born in ‘95 unfortunately hahaha
I saw them in Portland at La Luna in 1989, and the scene was just as you describe, vis-a-vis the diversity of the fan base. Top 3 live show I've ever been to in what is now 40 years of going to concerts.
just graduated HS when this came out. good times
This song kicked my heavy metal ass in High School!
And then as a goodbye tour they started Lolapalooza, the ultimate meeting of tribes!
This song is a classic to me. Unbelievable song

Love, love, love this song! Probably my favorite of theirs, though the entire "Nothing's Shocking" album is excellent.

Nothing's Shocking just may have been the first 90's album.
Nothing's Shocking is the best Post-Punk (for lack of a better category), album of the 80's! Janes Addiction set the stage for all the "alternative" bands that followed. Thanks for reacting to this! Well said!
Back in the late 80's, early 90's I used to trip acid in my buddies basement apartment and he had a giant poster of that album cover on his wall. It literally breathes to the beat of this song. Used to freak me out lmao....
If I could only pick 1 song of theirs to see live…this one is it
This album is a masterpiece from start to finish ! Seen them 15 times still not enough! Great review!
I remember listening to this album in my first apartment. Pulling bongs, nitrous ballons and listening to LP's....
I loved this album when it first came out and still do. Crazy to think this what I was listening to at 14. lol
"Up The Beach" into "Ocean Size" is a great combo, also "Then She Did..." is probably my fave song by them, I recommend any and all of those :D
I watched them live in São Paulo this week, and they played "Then She Did". Perry got teary eyed at times, it was such an emotional and personal performance, that song was incredible live

Try the song Three Days.
With Tasha!!!
Great video. Made me realize how well produced the recording is, and how absolutely chaotic it becomes. In terms of development and movement it goes right off the rails.
Yeah this song has a great vibe and groove to it
I remember when this came out. There was nothing like it. I wore this tape out in high school.
Pure art in music form. Texture and details matter! Next level shit!

"That's the worst f**king head I ever got in my life!" 😄
IYKYK
I love this album

A live show on a cassette tape?
You're my people!😉
This band changed everything!
Camera's got them images camera's got them all nothing's shocking 🎶 Love this whole message, love this whole album. Love your review channel , too 😍.

Brilliant band.. Started before grunge. They need their flowers
Jane's addiction was definitely unique
You should try mountain song
Technically this is late 80s (88) but for sure this inspired the 90s!
This was a banger album.
Saw them on their last tour. They killed it.
I recommend you listen to every Jane's tune at least once in your lifetime 🙃
I grew up a few blocks away from Kevin Connolly of Entourage. We went to school together. We were acquaintances. He was in Rocky V while in high school.
So 90's -- close. It was released in 1988.
More Janes: "Ocean Size" 🤙
Yeah, that song is a masterpiece.
3 Days ,,, just the best
Song- Mountain Song. Song- Ocean Size. Do the videos
JA was a guilty pleasure. Rather graphic, raw and hedonistic... to this day and where almost "nothing's shocking" still packs the punches.
Janes addiction - Had a Dad
A bit late here, but please give Three Days and Then She Did a listen. There is also Mountain Song and Summertime Rolls from the same album as Ted ... Ignore everything the put out after Ritual de lo Habitual.
It's an 80's track from 1988, about Ted Bundy the serial killer. Have you done Three Days?
The moment when even the freaks knew that the news was entertainment.
I like the Rock Room!
Please do "Three Days" from James Addiction.
This song is about Ted zBundy and his killing spree in the canyons of California.
The whole fucking album
Ted Bundy inspired. Serial killer vibes all the way 😉
Ted = Ted Bundy. Interesting back story to this song. The man speaking in the song is Ted Bundy taunting the police.
Ritual de lo Habitual is the only Janes you need. The climax, their pinnacle firing on all cylinders. You had to be there.
You should be with us. Feeeeling like we do. Like you love to, but never will...again
@@VinzClorthokeymasterofGozer Nosotros tenemos mas influencia con sus hijos que tu tienes, pero los queremos!
they have a point...
Still epic
First!
PLEASE LISTEN "OBVIOUS" BY JANES ADDICTION
This song in this album made the '90s everyone else was a poor attempt
Mountain song T if you please.
I like Jane says

💯
Took me a second. LOL.
Ted Bundy.
No mention of Ted Bundy? Really?
I had to give thumbs down on this. Blast me as being a "prude", but do you have to show the pornographic album cover? And did Jane's Addiction reall have to MAKE a pornographic album cover!?
It is a sculpture of the singer's girlfriend. Art, not pornography. Stay away from any art museums, particularly Greek and Roman sculpture.
Did u really feel u had to comment this? If u were so offended by the artwork, u should have just clicked off the vid.
