I did this today!! It took me about an hour to get the part straight down the back 😂. I did the pigtail chops and then felt more hair was still crunchy on the ends so I did some snip snips all over and it worked!! First time that I've ever cut my own hair. I have fine curly/wavy hair. It's all soft and bouncy now! Thanks, Mel!

Hi Mell! I love your videos, they are so helpful. I would love to see a video where you show how with the curlsmith color gels where the hair is cut in a few variations of this haircut , or simply explaining which combinations vertical and horizontal placements do or don't work well. Like is a placement a bit back but higher up a good idea, things like that.

Yeah, for real. I paid around $100 for a "special curly haircut" that honestly wasn't anything crazy... it was just a wash, little trim and styled. I'm like never again! I don't appreciate the jacked up prices for "curly haircuts".
Do it! Its relaxing and fun. I did my haircut inspired by Mel’s pigtail cut video and other videos related to a U cut. And Mel’s other video guiding her sister, Amanda, in cutting her own hair helped me understand how to cut the front half. You’ve got this!😃
I was the same until I tried it by watching Mel’s video. Get a good pair of shears from amazon and you won’t regret it and you’ll be so happy with the outcome; you’ll see. You will never waste your money again in a ridiculous salon. Spend your money wisely on the shampoo conditioner and styling products specific to your hair type and listen well to Mel’s recommendations.

Fantastic, just one question: How can we get a haircut less rounded but with layers? Maybe with other haircut (wolf cut?), or with this doing the pigtails upper to have shorter layers on the top?
Of course, my hair is Curly, but I prefer a "lion look" than a "ball look".

I have been doing the unicorn cut the last few years and it worked great for my long curly hair. I did this one and I just am at war with my hair!!! I’m trying to figure out a methodical way of fixing it because i think my hair is too thick for this pigtail cut

According to my stylist (highest level stylist at an Aveda salon with 30+ years experience) no cut should be technically "blunt" even blunt looking styles. Hair needs layers so that it can move naturally, be it long layers or hidden layers. Even blunt haircuts on celebrities have layers.

Hey Mel, have you ever heard of twisting your hair to create "texture" on the ends?
First I should tell you I NOW have very wonky hair - curly in the back & little to none in the front. It was stick straight until my 40's & then it started to curl...?
I always twist my bangs (have no natural curl in them) & cut them with thinning shears (usually - sometimes I'll use just any scissor I can find). I feel like it gives me the little fringy bangs that I like without having to tip cut(?) the ends.
Anyway my hair is super thick & coarse with a lot of greys & I was wondering if you thought twisting each pigtail would be easier to handle. I really don't think I have the hand/shoulder strength to comb it all flat or that I could even fit all of my hair in one smooth section of my fingers - there's just too much of it.
I was thinking if I could just twist it all & put in a hair tie as a guide - would that work? I do have hair scissors BTW. I know that makes a difference.
Also where can I get your mister & the styling brush that starts with a "D"? My memory sucks!

For low density hair do you recommend a short, long layers or more of a 90 degree. More wavy then tight curl

okay i need advice. i have bipolar hair and all of it is very beautiful and curly except for the parts around my neck (the underside) which are flat as a board. i want to find a haircut to hide the straight hair and excentuate my curls, as well as making my hair look bigger!!( i have about torso-length hair btw and am open to shorter styles) pls give advice 😭
