    I feel as though I went to Hell and came out a different man last year. I examined myself a lot while I was down there. I had no choice, really, as I was completely alone for most of the year. Especially the first 6 months. Not only was I alone, no girlfriend, no friends, no family in my state (and even then, not the best relations with them), but I felt as though I couldn't even fall back on hedonism to save me--which is what saved me when I was depressed as an adolescent. This was a deeper pain somehow that could not be escaped; and drinking only amplified it.
    Most of my transformation occurred in the first 6 months. I lost the love of my life and came to realize that it was primarily my fault. I realized how much time I've wasted on pleasing myself instead of pursuing meaningful goals, thus squandering my potential. Nihilism wasn't going to fix my problems anymore. And if I didnt have Jordan's book and lectures, among other great books, I might not have come out of that Hell. Ever.
    I'm irredeemably indebted to you, Dr. Peterson. Sometimes I think the world doesn't even deserve a role model like you--with how you are disparaged at times--but Lord knows we need some light.

      Beautiful, this reads as if you experienced dissolution of the deepest suffering, and ego. Maybe even trauma. Reminds me of how I've described my own burning transformative experiences.
      Hedonism is the dirtiest trick played on people. Pursue pleasure and your tolerance goes up, ensuring that nothing is pleasurable anymore. If pleasure is your god, suddenly your world becomes godless. That is the space of closing in, with no escape from reality until you surrender to it, surrender to experiencing Now, as it is. Sounds like you reached that point. You would probably really like When Things Fall Apart by Pema Chodron :)

      @@anewagora I've got a bunch of other books I need to read through first, as they were lent to me, but I will check that one out eventually. What's it about?

    • @anewagora
      @anewagora 4 роки тому

      @@thaddiusglunt2424 It's about when things fall apart. The title hits it directly. Here's a quote:
      “To be fully alive, fully human, and completely awake is to be continually thrown out of the nest. To live fully is to be always in no-man's-land, to experience each moment as completely new and fresh. To live is to be willing to die over and over again.”
      You can also search around Pema Chodron's videos if you want to get pieces of her philosophy and descriptive style. It's uniquely able to cut through white noise and make our basic reality very clear. Good luck my dude.

    I spent a long, long time aiming for the path and seeing my life almost destroyed by the people around me. Started in childhood with a dysfunctional family. But long story short, I've responded to those disasters so much and struggled to stand for my moral values that I have come through the other side- understanding what is missing. Understanding what the world isn't ready for. "Mass chronic apathy" of others is the most significant problem, second to it a toxic attachment to creating conflict in desperate desire to be the hero, the victim, or someone sensational. If we continue on in isolation, we will continue to devalue other human beings. If you devalue others, you will do the same to yourself. I'm extremely fortunate to have made my breakthroughs, let go of the dreams not possible in this world, and come out of it with a few real friends.

    • @gmchessplay9043

      Amen to that brother. What you do to others you are ultimately doing to yourself. Iv reached points of such heightened inapathy that I forgot I was even human. With this Covid-19 stuff I’m able to slow down and really connect with myself. When I tell you I was disconnected, I mean literally I operated solely on what my mind told me to do, didn’t matter what my body wanted. We have a limited time here on earth, why not increase that time, 30,40,50,100 years, so we don’t feel so rushed to do everything? So we don’t end up with shows like 90 day fiancé, and just absolute disgusting bullshit. And people make money off of portraying the worst of humanity, as opposed to the best of humanity, it’s utterly sad. I don’t mean to sound nihilistic because I’m not but man we can do better. People think Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos are 1 in a billion individuals but that’s simply because they aren’t around bright forward thinking people. There are millions of Elon’s and Bezos in the world, go make the world a better place.

      @@gmchessplay9043 Thanks for your in-depth response. People often mistake the problem and the solution- this is addiction at the root. They stay trapped, never curious enough to even try experiencing more fully what they are avoiding. Not considering, they could always go back to the cocoon. It's just too easy to fall asleep, waking up is a repeat process.

You are missing the entire message through trying to spot his foibles. It is inconceivable that there are people who would even bother to write a response that is so vacuous and asinine.

It’s all cold meaningless in away but yet people will still be hopeless enthralled by a person that only lives in the mind’s eye and never in their reality. People will only see a copy of a filtered image in their head and not an actual person. That’s why I don’t understand idolization, because to a certain point it just a socially acceptable madness.
