Hi Nick, nice to see this honest review. As a Taycan Turbo S owner i can confirm most of the quirks, especially the B pillar is a real turn off. Turning the air vents to focused gives me the feel i like so not a major issue for me, but as you said is is overengineered. The Gearbox issue you mentioned is rarely noticeable with my driving style, i got surprised a couple of times the car went into lower gear slowly decelarating into corners and feeling the little bump of the gearshift. This only applies to sport modes as cruising in normal mode leaves the car in second gear. But as you said the overall driving experience is beyond stellar, which easily compensates for all the quirks. BTW: I’m the guy you missed on your Germany trip because of my own stupidity if you remember. Maybe next time...

Hi! - If you like we could make a 3D Printed protection for the B-Pillar from a rubber-like material. - I just do that out of fun (not trying to sell something here) as I am anyway Engineering similar stuff on daily bases for cars. - Feel free to send me a message when you like. Marc Nobel that’s a good thought, but not on a $200K car. You expect every material to be premium, especially where it’s so obvious.

    • @Nord_Mann

Marc Nobel there is an auto interior company in Oslo, Norway, that covers these plastic panels in whatever material you like. I’ve seen it done seamlessly in the same material, I dare not mention on this channel, as the roof lining.
The jitterishness you noticed Nick I also sense, but only around town in Sport/Sport Plus. I guess it’s because the low speeds where I’m at doing city driving mean I’m in 1st gear with both motors up’n ready to go. I always use Normal for city driving, also to get the proper ground clearance. On the back roads, when you’re on it in the sportier modes, the playfulness of the gearbox is just fine.
Just wondering if I should swap my pre-owned 4S+ and spec my own 4S+ with RWS, Burmester and the double glazing🤔 Bubble Roof is a given as I already have that.

I think the B-pillar is tweaked in the Interior Carbon package section of the configurator. Not sure to what extent (writing this late'ish 2021). I'm 67 years old and I'd have no issues getting around the pillar by the way ...

I do not like the trend of having menu-driven controls for stuff like climate control, radio, etc. A dedicated button falls easily to hand (even when you miss slightly) without having to ever take your eyes off the road whereas if you miss the climate control (or whatever), you *must* look at the screen. That's obviously a dangerous design.

    • @msl5253

Honda agree...they've had such bad feedback on screen operated heating/vent controls that they will no longer be producing them. I've had touchscreen cars and they're a pain to operate on the move. My current S3 (with virtual cockpit) is fantastic to use as it uses a rotary wheel (with a touchpad on top) and menu buttons. I am amazed that Audi have now gone backwards with the new A3 as they've moved to full touch control systems..they've even got a touch sensitive volume knob to replace the lovely hardware unit..guess which works better? 🙄

Also this shift to menu based controls, like fake vents, has been implemented without establishing popularity and its becoming increasingly unpopular, yet it's still being rolled out. Doesn't add up.
You can't unleash fully automated cars without controls being fully electronic (eg handbrake), i believe this stuff is just a spin off from that.
And whatever, you can't run full auto cars and full manual cars on the same road at the same time.
This is all prep for what's coming down the pipe later on..

Nick: Thanks much for this much anticipated review, it was great. I bought one (4s) because I don't have $200k to spend and like you, the ridiculous acceleration is not required for this 991 owner since the 4S is just as fast as my 991. At 75, I bought it for the responsiveness and quietness along with magic carpet ride. My kidneys are old. I definitely understand your 2 speed gearbox issue which if I drive it in sport plus I know I will have because of the 991 PDK does the same thing. I thought, however if you were in normal you would not experience this. My shock was when I got on the freeway and it shifted down as I entered the acceleration lane. It leapt forward like a horse after a calf out of the shute. Sure to annoy any older passenger, but great for getting on CT parkways where you nearly stop, then go when there is an opening. You will be in instant formation flying- even with a 4S. Most places don't have that kind of system, they have acceleration lanes. IMHO anything more than a 4S is a waste of money. There are some interesting options, however one being night vision. Here in Arkansas we have these recalcitrant dear that love to see if they can beat you across the road, I'm hoping that will solve the problem.
Thanks again for a great review. I knew the vents were ridiculous as the acceleration, but I didn't notice the problem when I drove it in distributive mode. Completely agree with the PDCC. I completely agree it is not a 911 which I have driven for years and love. But alas, my old body and ears needed smooth and quiet. Interestingly, I did not have a problem entering the car. I will not have the seat full back as I think your car may have been set up for. That is a problem. More over-engineering.
I love software guys, - especially quality guys. They look for all the over-engineering which is a growing problem. I knew the lack of buttons was a mistake also. Hopefully we will set it and forget it except for the volume which is on the wheel.
    Chuck

I've owned a 4S for 9 months now and I love it. I drove the Turbo S when I was considering buying one but I agree with you it's a party trick that is liable to get you in trouble. I have no problem with the B pillar and don't have my seat go back when I get out. I had a 991 before the Taycan and the 4S is faster so it's plenty fast for me. We took a road trip and charging is no issue, but you have to uncomfortably take it down to 10% to get the max charging out of it. Best road tripping is drive to 10% and stop charging at 80%. The ride is incredible! I have not had the gear switching issue that you have had. You missed the worst item- Porsche connect. It is worthless. Fortunately you don't need it anyway, but you can't even tell how much air is in the tires before you hit the road. Some people have said that it causes the 12v battery to die, but I haven't had that issue. You are correct with the center box, but fortunately I never seem to have to get in it. Overall, I have had 18 Porsches since 1967 and I like this one the best. You are correct, however it is not a sports car it is a gt car- but the 911 is getting very gt also. I have the two tone leather and I do like it. My wife loves the passenger display and I like the night vision. Maggie, my small Poodle just loves the whole thing and almost won't let us drive it without taking her.

Thanks for the review, just a few items of feedback.
At 7:15 you talk in detail about Tesla's one peddle driving like as is true wiyh the Chevy Bolt EV and Leaf and others. The Taycan by design does not do hard Regen when the accelerator is released, that's true. They instead perform Regen when the break peddle is used. You can clearly see that when you press the brake pedal you will notice the energy graph changing to show power being put into the batteries. But I can can do 265 KW regeneration up to 0.4G breaking force. Porsche says 90% of all breaking will be done with regeneration/recuperation. The range of the Taycan is near 250mi with ordinary freeway driving.
Also, PDCC is a chassis control to deal with body roll in high speed cornering. It uses active rollbars to counter-twist the frame. I think what you were showing in the video was the active suspension compensating for body-roll which is base on the 4S and above Taycans.

That is correct I was going to comment something myself. I think in fact this car has the highest level of regen of any electric vehicle. I think I saw a German engineer mentioning 150kw Regen.. something like that it's extremely high. But they integrated it into the brake pedal so that it drives like a regular Porsche.
Perhaps they should have added an option to select one pedal driving and regen that way in addition to using the brake pedal for regen

Taycan Turbo S. There is also clunkiness not associated with the gear shift, but that as well as the uncertainty of exactly when it will shift (it is 95% predictable knowing that it shifts at 62 mph- my car does it at 59) are minor enough not to dwell on. The acceleration never bores me but is addictive. When in a hurry, the extra safety from distancing myself from cars behind when making lane changes is soothing, pleasing and exhilarating (particularly in the Turbo S) with the extra confidence of the car staying flat because of Porsche handling dynamics. Launch control is stupid and just makes one feel sick. But once rolling the acceleration pedal is very progressive and predictable similar to naturally aspirated motors but with far greater reward as the pedal travels lower. Entry and exit because of B pillars is antithetical to a luxury car, but the car is worth the annoyance which diminishes along the learning curve from getting in and out. Added bonus is the B pillar actually protects the front occupants sides. The material lining the B pillar, to me is not bad ( not hard plastic, but has give and has a comfort touch feel) So far, over 1000 miles, no scratches on it (Perhaps because of Nick's heads up on the issue). To me, it is a super fast executive saloon that can handle its weight approaching sports car levels and with the right tires can make respectable track times.

7:40 the Taycan does have regenerative braking but the "lift off braking" is just not as strong. The real recuperation only activates if you use the brake pedal. I googled some numbers for comparison: The Taycan can regenerate a maximum of 265kW compared to 77kW of a Model 3. So the Taycan has much stronger regeneration capabilities. I would guess the advantage would be that there is no need to get used to the system when comparing to a ICE car, as well as being able to choose wheter to recuperate or to roll.

Just the regen-brake was a bit technical off in the review. It`s quite sophisticated when you understand how it works.- I looked at the plastic part and thought why you would not just wrap it with PPF? It`s kind of forgiving to little scratches. I personally would scan the part and make a TPU Part with a shore hardness of about 95 to stick on it. Problem solved forever.

So I'd like to comment on your comments here for a minute.
    1. The regen. It regens a whole lot, but you need to use the brake pedal to regen. It has about 4 times the regen power of a Tesla. So it's very efficient.
    2. The B-pillar. I haven't had any issues getting in or out at all. Maybe it's a hight/width thing.
    3. The vents. I find there's no need to adjust anything. You set the temperature, and only adjust it a couple of degrees through the seasons. In modern cars I don't need to adjust where the air falls on my face. I keep the car nice and cool, or warm if it's in the winter, and I don't need wind in my face. But I guess those who need wind in their face fiddle with the new way of things. It's probably the same types of people who set the climate control to LOW when it's hot in the car and they want it cold, thinking it will go faster, and then slowly increases the temperature after that. Which is totally the wrong way of doing it. If you want 20 degrees (celsius) set it to that, and the car will give you 20 degrees as fast as it can.
    4. The buttons. Since you have so much more stuff to open electronically, they basically had to group that together somewhere, and that meant it was a lot more practical to do it on the screen than to have 4 buttons somewhere in the car, for frunk, trunk, left charge port and right charge port. And to split it, having something on a button and something on the screen, would be worse. I do agree with you on the next track button though. You can however use the trackpad to move to the next track button on the screen, and push the entire trackpad down to go to the next track. It seems to remember where you are on the screen so when you need it later on and push it, it's still on the next track button. So I guess that works as well.
    5. The gearbox. It seems to me that what you experience is sort of an issue with the drive mode your in. Because if you're in Normal, it will always be in second gear. So if you want to drive comfortable, you should be in Normal, or set up the mode you can configure for you liking. If you're in Sport Plus, the car will be snappy and fast, and you will struggle to drive miss Daisy in that mode. It's not meant for driving miss Daisy, so I'd say that's a user error.
I for one like it a whole lot more than I like the Panamera, Macan or Cayenne. It's simply brilliant. So brilliant I had to order one. People ask me how I can justify the price of a fully specked Model S Performance plus a fully specked Model 3 Performance. I say it's easily better than those two combined.

Nick I gotta say thank you. I bought my Sakhir Orange M4 after watching your videos a long time ago. Recently I test drove the Eton GT(sister car). The tight fit with the B pillar is true! I’m 6ft 190. When I get in the car My shoulders can touch both the a pillar and b pillar at the same time. It really is a gymnastics stunt to get in. The ray was the same but not as bad. I still love both cars though and desperately trying to find one not marked up over MSRP

This car kills all others on a road including fancy bykes with it's acceleration... playing with them before killing, brutally. My teeth dried out from smiling for 3 hours.... Agree with your summary - it is nice to see a US manufacturer doing well !. It's also nice to hear about the B pillar issue, the vents and the gripe about the gear shift (which should indeed be a thing of the past) or at least there ought to be the option of leaving it in low/high/auto for those occasions where the computer hunts for the correct gear. These are all small things but you're absolutely right and I'm sure Porsche will hear that feedback loud and clear. Your review comes into it's own around the 9:00 min mark. Thanks !

    Regarding the electronic vent controls.
    1. I checked with Taycan owners who have had a month or more in the car and they state the functionality is fine.
    2. Having it be electronic means the settings can be (and are) saved as part of driver preference. Thus part of the memory package that restores your seat and steering wheel position also restores the vent positions and radio settings.
As one would expect in a $100k+ vehicle. 😏

  • @ronb4633

Using the menu to open trunk or front trunk would rarely be done, only when letting someone else put stuff in. If the car is unlocked or the keyfob is detected then the trunk can be opened by pressing the button below it or waving your foot under the rear bumper. Open the trunk by waving your hand over Porsche logo on hood. Also there are buttons for each on the keyfob.

I got the lack of regenerative breaking explained by my dealership. They told me that its more efficient to "coast" and that the brakes initiate the engines for braking up to 3G before actually using the discs. Its almost identical to what Audi E-tron have. Iv'e actually seen this in the system of the car. You can (under car see on the drivetrain 3D graphics see that it regenerates when braking)

  • @E.PELLEGRINO

Hi Nick, the Taycan does use regenerative breaking. By pressing the break pedal you dont immediately apply pressure to the breakpads. The car first recuperates as much as possible, only using the "standard breaks" if more stopping power is needed. A few years ago, it took engineers quite some time to make the break pedal feel as natural as possible. This, I believe, is an industry standard on all german hybrid and electric cars.
At least I have experienced that on all electrified BMW models.
In my opinion one pedal driving gets uncomfortable if the driver is unexperienced or not very sensitive with his right foot. Especially in Uber rides u see a few drivers constantly switching between accelerating and lifting his foot too far of the pedal therefore the car goes into regen again. If you are rushing to the airport with your stomach working on that morning espresso, that insensitive pedal use wont make you feel hungry anytime soon.
For a daily driver I definitely prefer zero resistance "gliding" when i lift my foot of the accelerator. In a proper sportscar its another story.
    Keep up those great videos!
    Cheers from Austria

Someone said a long time ago, the correct way to get in a car w/bucket seats. "Open door, sit down, then put your feet in, reverse to get out." Try it, it works for me, might make it easier to deal with the position of the "B" pillar.

  • @Alenator123
    @Alenator123 4 роки тому +5

Hey nick, i thought you know it but it sounded not like that. The porsche can regen up to 260-270 kW and it will so by pressing the brake pedal without you noticing. only in emergency situation , complete stop or to remove surface rust it will apply the mechanical brakes. Therefore porsche put out a time replacement suggestion not mileage based. So it shouldn't increase the range by one pedal driving. Only if you roll to every stop light, however then you would act like an old grandma on the streets and slow down the cars behind you

I know exactly what you’re saying about the high/low gearbox. A good driver can modulate the drive and manipulate the torque to the benefit of either performance driving, or comfort for passengers. And this is why I consider electric cars, at least in its current form, is more of an appliance, than an automobile.

As the owner of both a 911 and a Model 3, I agree 100% with your assessment. I drove one and expected to be figuring out a way to pay for one, but I left feeling a bit nonplussed. The car is fast, but feels heavy. It’s not a 911 with 4 doors. Plus, it’s WAY cramped compared to a Panamera. Trunk is small too.
I could see buying this if 90% of your driving was 75 miles a day or less commuting and you didn’t carry more than one passenger that often. It’s VERY tight in the back. I also noticed the issue getting in the front. It was easier to get in my 911.
    Odd car.

yes Nick, I had the chance to drive it, personally used to the last 911 gts and the experiences of the performance were overwhelming, but: it’s uncomfortable to get in and out as you mentioned it, the entertainment system is bugging, often needless with the overloaded functions, the sound remembers to an electric tram, the brakes are less strong as with the 911 and if you approach very fast to cars ahead of you they will not hear you as with a conventional Porsche. I drove with 260 km/h and in Germany there are still highways allowed to do so, and the capacity went down so quick, the distance is less than announced. Thanks for your review.

Hi Nick! That’s the kind of review everyone would like to hear and see. Not the one where the You-tuber has in his back of his mind that he has a great day driving a real Porsche (and “if I’m overly positive, they will let me drive one again next time”). But the one where you honestly get the up- and downsides of the car. Any car. I really learned something and I could make a good ‘what to buy, what not’ decision based on that.
It’s a good thing other Tubers never touch your level of reviewing. Because this way, you get to stay ‘Nick Murray’. Uniquely and unfiltered. So never change, mate.
Maybe I was overly positive here, Nick. Lol, that’s why I’m not a ‘Tuber and you are. Any way, all the best from ‘Yurp’, #StaySafe and cheers, Irwin 🤟
