loved the video! i’m starting astrophotography soon and i just ordered a rebel t7 with a 75-300 mm lense as well and a sky watcher star adventurer 2i. you have inspired me to take on this new hobby!
I actually use this exact Canon camera, but I have mine hooked up to a Celestron C5 telescope. I hope to be getting a SkyWatcher HEQ5 mount in the next few months. This Nexstar Alt-Az mount just isn't cutting it...lol.
Trevor, always a pleasure to see that you have posted a video. Excellent production as usual, you set the standard period IMHO. Regarding your garage: yours is so much better organized than mine. You have storage and a small work area for your kit. Most of us can’t even see the floor in ours. Best of the Season to your family!
Hey Trevor! - I just have to say right away, the edits, location changes and as always your presentation were absolutely off the charts on this one man!! Incredible job, only sorry I missed the premiere! Your final shot was insane man, it really captures the feeling for me! it's hard to explain but I think you know what I mean? Wishing you, Ash and Rudy all the very best for Christmas and the whole year to come man, Thank you for all that you do for this community! All the very best, Luke
I showed this image to my parents the other night from your Instagram post. They've never seen the Horsehead Nebula before. I told them one day soon, I hope to be capturing images half as beautiful as this. I was however able to get several hours of the Orion Neb and the Crab Neb while I was down there for the holiday in their Bortle 4 area. Going to sit down and finish processing those images tonight. Amazing Horsehead image bro! Always love seeing your final results!
The Horsehead Nebula is one of the images that got me interested in astronomy when I was a kid. I'm a new subscriber to your channel. Love your enthusiasm. Love your setup. Well done sir.
The video production and story telling felt like a friend next to you sitting and explaining you their astronomy passion. Congrats on mind-blowing image.
Great work Trevor beautiful image. I hope that you, Ash and Rudy have a great Christmas. Looking forward to seeing more from the Black Dog Observatory next year.
Wow, nice work, Trevor. Your productions now are better than most Science Channel shows, and far more entertaining. I want to wish you, Ash and Rudy (short for Rudolph?) a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!
A minor correction at 1:04. IC 434 is the name of red the emission nebula behind the Horsehead. The Horsehead Nebula is designated as Barnard 33 (B33). Fantastic image at the end! The next time I visit this subject, I'll try to incorporate some Ha data into my existing color data to get that extra pop!
Trevor what’s your opinion on the Optolong L-Extreme with the halo issue on bright stars like those found near the horsehead? Getting into Astrophotography and ordering up equipment and filters right now.
Another great photo, Trevor, thanks. The only thing astro related that I have room for in my 2-car garage is my foam kneeling pad, and that's only in there because I use it for gardening and other yard work. No, I can't move the cars out, they haven't been parked in there for years.
Trevor, multiple solutions for your garage / control room would include the construction of a small yard shed (for yard maintenance hardware) or modify the interior of your garage by splitting it into two defined sections. One portion for yard stuff and the other side as the control room with insulated walls with drywall, desk/workspace, shelves, multiple electric outlets, lighting, cable and internet and a portable heater & air conditioner. Add an old carpet remnant or area rug to separate the cold concrete flooring. You'll never leave it.
Great image of the Horsehead! Down here in Australia the weather has been bad, but I did see the Comet on Dec 20 and 21. Very nice dense core but the tail was impossible to see with binoculars.
Hi Trevor, Thanks again for sharing the information. One of my favorite targets as well. Where did you get the prints made I saw on your wall when you were talking about the shirts, lol..
Man I've seen you photograph this region a few times now. Gets better every time, not surprised, can't wait to shoot this again myself this year. Great capture and process Trevor
Thanks for the Blink information. When I use DSS on my photos the first time I always "stop" the program after it "scores" the photos. I then click on the star column and it rearranges them from low to high and in almost all cases the photos with less star have clouds or the mount got bumped.
Love your content & it gives me inspiration, while photographing the stars! When in your inside office and the prints on the back wall, what resolution were those and how big are the actual prints? Trying to decide on this myself. Thanks and keep it up!
Down in Central NY and have had nothing but clouds for Leanord. I had literally the EXACT reaction about the tail. "Oh awesome its cooler now too", Lmao. Great videos thanks for keeping me tuned in!
Always a treat watching your video's thanks so much. I'm new to Astrophotography, and went in deep right away. Waiting for clear skies,so I can capture all Orion has to offer, with my modified DSLR and Redcat 51. Cheers from North Wales and Happy Christmas to you and the Family.
Hi Trevor ) I don’t know if you’ll see this question but I’m curious about when you framed the horse head nebula it was on the vertical short side of the camera sensor and then of course you’d want to flip it horizontally for the final image . But I’m just curious if you could just rotate the Camera so it would already be on horizontal framing and not have to flip it in post ?. I’m a newbie so I’m not really sure what the advantages or disadvantages of doing it either way . Would love an answer if possible thanks , love your contributions. Mike (montreal ,Canada )
I consider myself a hack amateur but I haven't been able to see Leonard either. I've been wondering if it ever got bright enough being so close to the horizon near sunset (43 degrees north lat). Crazy detailed final image!
About 10 years ago I built a small insulated shed to keep all my telescopes and equipment in. The main reason for building it was my other shop wasn't airtight and dirt blows around inside whenever it's windy.
Oh wow, I took just yesterday photos of Horsehead Nebula. I am just starting, and my lens are some old soviet 135mm lens with sony a6000. But I just push through and my image is still processing. I have only 14 minutes of exposure and comparing to your 6 hours of exposure and many more hours editing, I really respect you for your passion. Merry Xmas! It's also crazy that two people far away can see same things, getting the same chances of capturing your own, amazing hobby. Edit: ok, 14 minutes and lightly polluted night sky without filter is a disaster for me. Maybe with much edit I could get something but i think it's just waste of time... guess i have a lot of days to shoot orion...
Great video! I tried the Horsehead a couple of weeks ago with a DSLR and Achromat, couldn't spend enough time on it before the clouds came in. Will be trying again the next time I go out. Also I don't know if it's just me, but your links to amazon, IG, Twitter, and FB are all broken. The other links seem fine. I was curious what mic you are using to make the video. I use my Canon and Galaxy S21 for my videos but as you can imagine, once you get too far away, you don't sound too good.
Hey, Trevor. I know a $500 setup can’t produce this quality of shots, but can you recommend a dependable, affordable Dobsonian to at least be able to see a good number of galaxies and nebulae? It may not be feasible in the $500 range but I’m slowly working my way up to higher quality scopes
My star adventurer 2 arrived today and I tested positive for covid. Dark skies and Orion can wait a few weeks. Merry christmas and happy new year everybody
I have got a question. I am brand new to this hobby and I currently repairing my late father's telescope ( tasco 11tr) But you mentioned that you where using a red filter and then you were using a red led head light would that not add additional light pollution?
Why not use subframe selector in PI to get rid of bad subs while you drink coffee. You can then use blink on what you have left to check that you have not missed anything.
I remember first time I looked for the Horsehead Nebula I could only see that emission nebula and star underneath it and I thought it didn't look like a horse's head at all. Didn't know I needed a special filter and a really big telescope to see it live.
Hi Trevor, Thank you for all of your videos........I'm using my canon 500mm f4 prime lens as my telescope + a Canon 5D mkii that has the full IR mod, Could you recommend a shutter speed and ISO I can start with to capture Orion. ps: The weather at my location of 38S in the southern hemisphere has been kind at night, The weather starts out right and then when I go to take my gear outside the clouds come in.
Hello, I like so much your videos, your explanations and videos are very clear to follow for none english people as well. I have one question, I own an olympus m1 (4/3 sensor) and I see the rokinon 135 f2 as a good lens for astrophotography but due to my crop factor, I should look for antoher lense... Do you have any suggestion?
I'm learning about astrophotography through your video. I think you took the best photo of Horsehead nebula, I'd like to be the amateur astronaut like you and I would buy a equatorial mount and a good apocromat refractor........and I have lived in Korea since I was born......Thank you for your good video~!!! (My English ability seems no good.....)
Absolutely love the content you produce. I can’t wait to finally get my own telescope and see what I can find myself. Thank you for the entertainment! Happy Holidays!
May I ask a question please? I *think*, when I see your final photos on here that I see a black ring around stars, possibly as a result if deconvolution? It could be just a figment of the YT compression and then play back through my Chromecast though. I've seen similar in my own shots when I looks closely and TBH my jury is still out on whether it looks good or not. Your thoughts and comment please? Especially as I'm considering spending money on professional prints of some of my pics now.
When I see black rings around the stars after running deconvolution, it's usually from having the global dark value too low (assuming pixinsight). Other things can cause dark circles but you asked about deconvolution and that's been my experience with it.
Hi Trevor, very nice work ! Here, in Lac-Saint-Jean region (Quebec), at this time of the year, when the sky is clear, the temperature usually drops very low : we had -34 °C on December 24... (it was -30 °C at 9 pm). So it's unbearable for the devices... and for us ! Arf...

I shot the horsehead for my second time yesterday. But the first time the stacked image had red color and this time the horsehead is pink. Same gear same stacking, same location. How’s that possible?
I got an gyskyer telescope and my targets are Jupiter pleiades star cluster Saturn Orion nebula and Orion stars Rigel Betelgeuse Anilam Alnitak and Mintaka
Not sure if it’s because us Americans lie to ourselves about size but I found that I need to go at least one size up for snug fit and two sizes for loose fit. Love the fabrics though
