Bought a couple bay-o-fangs like 7 years ago to use in the RV. I didn't know they were considered "ham radios" nor did I know anything about radios. Last summer I was playing around and came across two people talking and later figured it was a repeater channel. And it was like 85 miles away. I was blown away. So I looked on Amazon and started buying big antennas and coax. Got a mast and programming cable. That's badass these $25 walkie talkies things can do this. Then I met ham radio people. And now all that joy is gone. 🤮
"And now all that joy is gone. " Same with drone flying. You buy a drone and the first thing most people do is fly straight up as high as it would go, right into the flight path of an airplane or helicopter. Gradually you discover rules exist. Many rules. Then the joy is gone. Joy exists in the presence of ignorance.
If i ever get in to mountain climbing or caving then I'm definitely going to have my own backpack with a dedicated repeater in it to leave on top of where ever I start to go down from
Correct Randy ... no radio will save you... That's why we need to be self reliant and have a Network of friends that can throw you some Rope .....not one thing can keep you alive. But With knowledge and some wisdom we prevail.

Thanks man, 👍🏾
aww man! i already put a punisher sticker on my UV5R, now you're telling i have to plan and do homework to use it effectively? geesh, it's nothing like the movies.
@TheNotaRubicon Thank You again for making these videos. I actually just bought a Baofeng UV-5R because it's nice having a 2nd emergency option when cell phone towers go out from storms which has happened a few times in the past(reference: Hurricane / Super Storm Sandy). I'll be using it more for listening to some of the local braodcasts around here. I've seen a lot of "Sad Hams" out there constantly posting and bashing this radio and what it really comes down to is the same stupidity that some groups of people have with 2nd amendment rights....But instead of 2A, it's 1st amendment rights as they (Sad Hams) really don't want people to be able to easily get a hold of affordable equipment to talk on.. It s like they belong to an exclusive "club". Once again, Happy Holidays to you and your family.
I bought a set off of amazons for $40. Wanted something to use when situating my RV while camping. My wife and I usually just use cell phones, but when cell service sucks, these radios are perfect. I don't intend on getting a license since we only do this a few times per year and we use MURS frequencies. Too bad for the sad hams. I also programmed them for NOAA weather. and, for shits and giggles to listen to the ISS when it flies over.
Another suggestion is to look for repeaters that are listed as having emergency power. Depending on the SHTF situation the power might be down and thus make repeaters 100% worthless. Its good to have a few programed, if they are around, and make sure the name indicates emergency power. For my radios I put a * in the name to indicate it has emergency power.
I finally bought the Iridium Extreme Satellite phone last week. Being that I’m always in the mountains of the PNW, and line of sight/cell comms simply suck in that environment It simply had to be done to be prepared for the eventual collapse. What’s nice is that this phone will do email, text, and has a SOS button. The SOS feature sends emails, texts, and calls to numbers you choose. It will also trigger a SAR party to your location if you choose. The insurance for the SAR response is 34.00 a year for up to 100,000 coverage. It has definitely given me peace of mind. Now I won’t have to call the sad hams that are just waiting to come to my rescue.
I did the same. No replacement for the Iridium Extreme Satellite phone. Love GMRS and radios in general but the coverage of the Iridium Satellite network is unsurpassed.
sounds big and bulky and clunky and complicated but if it works, more power to yah! How does it pack away and how much space does the dish and stuff use up I amagine it deploys like an umbrella and has a little tripod that autosearches for the sats and must be expensive and quite reliable for what it can do.
One job I had one in my work truck and it was a pain to use. Had to get bars and then hold the phone still and contort your head to where the phone was. My current job, my work has one we take if going somewhere remote. I have used it a few times and it works much better than the other one
the sawing off your own arm thing ... oof ... that might be a good reason to have a ham licencse, so you can put some ham repeaters on your radio, a baofeng has a chance to hit a repeater even in more remote areas. maybe not if you're way out in BFE, then maybe get the tourniquette ready..
Great advice. Here in Australia all our emergency repeaters use Ch5 UHF with the same offset. Still need to be in range and not obstructed. They are mostly monitored.
Use the inreach in Alaska all of the time. Great for messaging and tracking. Though I will say not foolproof as their satellites have had communications issues. Though they will send out emails to that extent. They recommend you synch your device and test it each time you go out. Highly recommended despite the minor issues.
Hopefully common knowledge for the seasoned Ham, but possibly not for a new or prospective licensee..this is the Whole Point of vhf/uhf radio..possibly add a Gain Antenna into the mix for those remote areas of travel also.. well said.. thanks for the videos.
Nice, lots of useful info, have to pack saw as well apparently, but.... Is there any non frowned upon process how to test repeaters ahead on emergency situation without having radio license?
Hey man, I was going to get some two-ways from walmart, but decided to get a few uv5rs since they are flexible and fun to experiment with. My dad was naval communications person and one of those cranky hams. It's funny to know a person like that, and to somewhat understand the subculture. Thank you for all your videos. You have put a ton of work into understanding how to operate these devices and share your knowledge. i appreciate the sacrilege. What HAMS don't realize is that this little $20 radio is going to bring a fuck ton of people into this hobby. They should be grateful.
1) Repeaters are individually owned and maintained 2) Repeaters function independantly and do not require a backhaul/other links in the chain to be online to function 3) Many (some, not all) repeaters have battery backup, and some have additional solar charging or generator backups 4) The only repeater I care about is owned & maintained by me and has a battery and solar backup, so I know there will be one available when I need it.
Have you heard anything about during the recent disaster with HELENE or any others in the past, how did the GMRS network hold up? Was it saturated or are the channels available? Same with drone flying. You buy a drone and the first thing most people do is fly straight up as high as it would go, right into the flight path of an airplane or helicopter. Gradually you discover rules exist. Many rules. Then the joy is gone. Joy exists in the presence of ignorance.

First? -- Valuable info as always sir
Exquisite! your information is fantastisch , and put in a way almost as crazed as I am ... live long my friend!
If i ever get in to mountain climbing or caving then I'm definitely going to have my own backpack with a dedicated repeater in it to leave on top of where ever I start to go down from
I watch all your videos Randy.
Touching on it is something you're good at, I believe!
Love this guy and the impotent information he provides
Love the dry humor.
Brilliant Community Safety message Randy..........................................with affiliate links below!😆👍
Correct Randy ... no radio will save you...
That's why we need to be self reliant and have a
Network of friends that can throw you some
Rope .....not one thing can keep you alive. But
With knowledge and some wisdom we prevail.
"That's why we need to be self reliant and have a Network of friends that can throw you some Rope"
Provided you happened to mention to your rope throwing friends which canyon you were visiting and might not return from.
Baofengank you for this important information !
In case of a natural disaster or similar situation in our area, there will be several people listening for my call as I am part of the emergency amateur radio net for my church, city, county and state (RACES) as well as being a CERT member.
Another one of your great vids Randy!
WHAT....... You mean I have to read the instructions!!!! Instructions is just a waste of time. Plug in and play is the only way😁
BTW, great video. Keep em coming!!
Man, im gonna go back to your first video on this channel, and learn how to use this thing. Mine came in a few months ago, and I have been trying to figure it out, and your videos seem to be more informative, and clearer than anyone else's I've seen on youtube. Great channel, great videos! Thanks man, 👍🏾
Great advise . . . looking into the Garmin
aww man! i already put a punisher sticker on my UV5R, now you're telling i have to plan and do homework to use it effectively? geesh, it's nothing like the movies.
lots of great information thanks.
It
s like they belong to an exclusive "club".
Love it! Great tips... including the very last one!
In your honor, I enabled the roger beep on my feng.
Excellent video sir.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Will the RT5R work and ik it’s a ripoff of the UV5R great anyways will it work??????
I dont know, I dont have one.
"Now I won’t have to call the sad hams that are just waiting to come to my rescue."
Thank you!
the sawing off your own arm thing ... oof ... that might be a good reason to have a ham licencse, so you can put some ham repeaters on your radio, a baofeng has a chance to hit a repeater even in more remote areas. maybe not if you're way out in BFE, then maybe get the tourniquette ready..
😂❤so intertaining are yr videos! Thank u
Lol that was the best educational intro video I’ve seen in a while !
Great video buddy
Do you ever blink ?🙂Thank you for all your precise no bullshit videos.👍
Great video. Good information!
Excellent video. Have a plan!
I save all manuals! 😃
Too bad you don't read them.
This is one of the funniest videos I have ever seen!!!!! hahahaha!!! Good info too. Cheers man!
Dude, your videos are so good I sometimes watch them to help me cope with some things that are going on in my life, great humor! I love it
Such a simple concept yet, so hard to grasp for some..
Another great video!
😂UA-cam videos with words on them 😂 😂 😂. Brilliant!!!
Your plan is going to need two things, Number ONE, item B, Item C.
I knew there was a reason I liked you.
Very informative Ty. I get ur tone though. ppl just don’t do common sense anymore. Just doing research.
Do any of the Baofengs come with a saw in case I'm stuck in a ravine and need to cut my arm off? What do I do if I cut off the wrong arm?
yeah u know that little metal lip on the side for a strap?
it can slice stuff technically just need to run through sandpaper a little lmfao.
It can also help too if you buy a Fat Boy 6-pill linear amplifier and hook it up to your Bow Fang.
Great advice. Here in Australia all our emergency repeaters use Ch5 UHF with the same offset. Still need to be in range and not obstructed. They are mostly monitored.
I know some sad hams that's got very expensive HT's don't have a clue how to operate them !
Why do you think repeaters are going to work if cell towers and power go down ?
1) Repeaters are individually owned and maintained
2) Repeaters function independantly and do not require a backhaul/other links in the chain to be online to function
3) Many (some, not all) repeaters have battery backup, and some have additional solar charging or generator backups
4) The only repeater I care about is owned & maintained by me and has a battery and solar backup, so I know there will be one available when I need it.
Really well done ! I sometimes don't care for your videos. You really got this one about the UV5R vs FRS/GMRS. How did you nail the ending so well? 73
Have you heard anything about during the recent disaster with HELENE or any others in the past, how did the GMRS network hold up? Was it saturated or are the channels available? Is it reliable for an emergency plan or will it be overwhelmed during an emergency in my area and if so, what would be the best plan for a disaster like this?
How do I use my browfang to rebuild civilization after the zombie apocalypse?
Use its secret power source to rejuvenate the power substations.
