- Watch a moose shed one of its antlers as a startled Wyoming family records from a window close by. All male moose grow and lose their antlers each year, but it's rare to catch it on camera.

“Is he supposed to lose it!!??”
The worry is real.
Yes. Every animal that grows antlers lose them every year. It is kind of like losing teeth for bigger better ones to grow. Only humans cant grow better teeth every year. :( usually when they lose their antlers new ones are about to start growing.
That’s not right at all lol
@@sirpudding8934 it isn't?
@@sirpudding8934 no it was his left antler. He will shed his right antler later.
@@Bendigo1 not every animal that had antlers. Here in Alaska the female caribou keep their antlers all year round.
I bet that feels weird. All of a sudden having all the weight on one side.
Thought about the same thing. When the other one doesnt come off soon it probably affects his neck muscles.
It’s neck muscles are so strong the don’t notice, but yeah that would be weird
It must feel awkward. I can't even stand parting my hair to the side
Animals do not thinking "it's weird" like humans. It's just Nature.
@@albutcher9152 no one said animals think its weird, they said it feels weird.
If I saw a Moose do this, I'd run over and grab the Antler and hang it up over my Fireplace as a conversation piece. When people wanted to know how I came to acquire such a treasure, I would begin the story with, "Did I ever tell you how I once engaged a 1,500 lbs Bull Moose in Mortal Combat?....."
@Liam Smith he is not talking about the game idiot
Don't do that!
@@RexIgneus2024 than why would he capitalize letters, IDIOT?
@@RexIgneus2024 you didn't have to say idiot I'm pretty sure he knew he wasn't talking about mortal kombat he was just making a joke don't just jump to calling people an idiot be respectful please and thank you
Id try to get both antlers honestly
I figure a loose antler feels like a loose tooth. They know it feels weird and they shake it off the same way a child can tell when their tooth feels loose and is going to fall out and the push at it with their tongue.
Me: waiting for the antlers to drop.

I bet it feels like losing a tooth. That urge to wiggle/pull it out, and that palpable sigh of relief once it's finally GONE.
So grateful for the internet! I would've never been able to witness such a thing otherwise.
That family talking makes the video an absolute gem

Anyone else have a strange feeling when the antler came off as if you too lost something heavy and annoying... Nevermind, that was just my cat on top of me.
Lol the kids are so cute. It's nice to witness people learning new things! 😌
Antlers mainly serve as a display of a bull moose's stature and strength during the fall mating season. Usually, younger and weaker males can be easily scared and fended off by a rival with a bigger rack, so there's often no need to use them as a weapon.
Please don't ever speak on wildlife ever again. Antlers serve one purposes and one purpose only. To defend their harem from other bucks/bulls during the rut for mating. Cows/does don't think wow look at that rack!! He is so big and full. They mate with the bull/buck that is the fittest. The fittest is determined by fighting and preventing another male from stealing their harem.
human females also seem to become intimidated by an individual with a larger rack, must be convergent evolution
that's actually a female moose wearing fake antlers...
lmao
DrFlippin lol
It’s not a transmoose?
The best part of this sit the people who have no idea what is going on.

I'm usually blown away by people's apparent sudden lack of motor control when recording a slowly moving object (like a rocket); But this video proves that the subject matter need not even be moving for a person with a camera to lose all motor control as well as all intelligence when recording anything with a video camera.
Hope they picked it up later.

Thanks for the little typed commentary on the side. It always amazes me how many people don't know that most deer (including moose!) grow their antlers every year and then drop them after the rutting season.
(And like the OP says -- no, it really *doesn't* hurt. The antlers are dead bone at that point. It's like having your hair cut.)
Yeah they lose their velvet first. Once that happens the antler calcifies and is just dead bone. It's a relief for them to lose it.
I Didn’t Know...🤭
I always imagined it probably feels good. Especially when they scratch off the velvet. Must feel like scratching a bad itch.
I wonder what he thinks when the antler comes off.....
"Hey! How the heck did that happen?"
“WHOA DUDE!!!! My head is so much lighter!”
@@bubbythedeer5873 More like "Now the weight on my head is uneven, great..."

Yes to grow new ones next year
They're lucky to witness such wildlife.
“I didn’t like that antler anyway”
All I was thinking about is "Are they gonna go out after its gone to get the antler! ?
Maybe after one of Canada's most dangerous animals leaves the scene 😃
Although if he's losing his antlers that means that mating is done for the year so he won't be AS angry if you get too close.
These people sound so sweet!
Losing an antenna like that he'll be missing a lot of sports channels.
Thanks to the comments, I know understand the symbiotic relationship between Rocky and Bullwinkle.
Sensational video! Thanks for sharing.
LOL "Is he a guy or a girl?"
Not gonna lie, i'm cringing quite a bit at how little these people know about moose (or deer in general).
Thanks NatGeo for clearly correcting all of the ridiculous things they were saying!
Some real brainiacs on the other side of that camera
😂😂😂😂😂🤔🤔🤔
Video: It doesn’t hurt

"Is he a guy or a girl"
Oh no.
Now it looks like the one from open season
lol
My brother found a shed by a whitetail deer. It was a 5 point and thick at the base. Its from a big buck. It was found 2 weeks ago and we seen the buck with 1 antler last week when we went out for a hunting walk. Big buck that looks very healthy.
I love their excitement and concern for the cow. So sweet.
Amazing video! Loved it! First time I saw the process of a deer family animal losing an antler in action!!! :D
Anyone else getting this recommended in 2021?
Ahh, that's awesome! Omg the commentary was so cute. Love it! Thanks for sharing.
The commentary was ridiculously annoying. They were a bunch of idiots.

They are all like awww when he looses his paddle
I wonder if it's a relief! ☺️ And it must be so annoying when the second one doesn't shed off at the same time. My neck hurts just thinking about that...
I was like is it just gonna fall off or he gonna bang it on a tree...
Him: 🎶shake it off, shake it off🎶
Stunning 🤩
So cute, “oh, no!”
I was really happy to find out it doesn't hurt when it falls off!
“Is it a guy or a girl” as a Canadian, I can tell you that is clearly a guy. Pff, tourists.
As a American it’s clearly gender mutual based on the feathers
These people never went to school apparently. “Is it a guy or girl”, “Is he supposed to lose it??”
Jay Disman - School nothing, I've lived in Northern Canada my whole life and had no clue they shed their antlers. Oops. I never would have believed they have to grow that whole mess again every year!
These people are obviously not Canadian lmao
that was a fast shedding
wow good catch on camera
Shout out to the girl who said look at that booty at the start
Thank you, gracia's.
I need that antler for the camp upgrade!
That's why you always use gorilla glue for serious situations, super glue doesn't cut it!
It was the dialog that did it for me 😂😂😂
That was a great view
"Is it a guy or a girl" *antler falls off* "GasP" "AwwWee POor GuY" 😶😶
So cute she that thought it was sad. I hope she has learned sbout the process as a result.
It’s so weird that a National Geographic ad shows up before the video..
It lost balance when it fell off.
Amazing.........
Parent: That's supposed to happen
Little Girl: Awww poor guy
Good timing
It doesn't hurt but it does throw you a little off balance!!!
Now I want to see the video where the antler grows back... ;)
Looked startled when it fell off, like when your chewing popcorn and hit a kernel that makes a loud crunch and you just pause for a second like F was that my tooth!
I did not know they fully chucked it off like that while shedding. I’m not sure exactly what I was imaging would happen, but it wasn’t this.
They drop them in all sorts of ways.
Them : oh no ! He lost his antler !
Canadian : LMFAO !!
WHAT IS SAM WINCHESTER DOING HERE??!?

Shake it off, moose!! Yay!!!
If you think that's rare, I woke up one morning while camping to find a deer that had died in my camp quietly overnight a few feet from my sleeping bag. The cougar that was chasing it ran away.
Just go to collect it lol awesome souvenir when it’s received in natural way without killing anyone
At 0:31 I thought It said the antlers are delicious

He looks like he’s having a bad day 😂
Omg. Half his head fell off. How is he still alive??
Rolling on the floor. I needed that laugh.
I like how the text just debunks everything the people in The video says. xD
When you're costume breaks at a party so you just act natural
StevenP 91 🤣
I know a really mature whitetail is always the last to shed velvet. They are old and know when they need to start rubbing off velvet. Young bucks get excited and do it earlier in anticipation of the rut. Older bucks know they got plenty of time before it rut and are slower to shed velvet. They know they get first dibbs at the gals anyway.
What a nice video and to witness that!
I wonder how long it took them to race over and grab that antler?
And folks that’s how girls remove their fake eyelashes 😂
I was reading a conversation between the onion knight and King Stannis. that sent me to look for the origin of ''giving horns''. still can not find a good answer. but I found out about this amazing fact about antlers that somehow eluded me for almost 27 years of existence on this planet. curiosity pays off.
Look up "cuckold horns" and you'll find it.
It looked like an Alien Facehugger as it fell.
I always thought they smash their antlers on trees to get them off. I had no idea they could just pop off with just a quick shake of the head.
