Its called empathy because he understands how wild life works and that this the only way to get food for himself or die. Also, he is placing himself in the bears position and contemplating how sad and hungry he would be if he was in that position. Not to mention lonely. Also also, correct me if I am wrong but this sucks from a species survival point of view as well. The white polar bears are more in danger than the Walruses.

The bear is injured maybe from when they plunged and the walrus struggled in the water. You'll see in the Video from time 5:07 - 5:14 .The Polar bare can barely move his/her left leg. The walrus maybe stabbed her with her fangs when it struggled from the bite grasp of the p. bear. This is a simple survival in the wild. Most of the times they kill their prey. But sometimes they suffer consequences of severe injury from hunting their food. This is not a fully grown Polar bear and is tired maybe swimmed far distance and getting stabbed... This is the life of animals in the wild, Kill or be killed for food....Were lucky that men are created in the image of God, and can get food not from killing others.
