What's truly amazing is that very small contact patch of the wheel carries so much weight and concentrates it down into such a tiny area on the track and wheel itself.

    • @Idiocracy343

That train wheel also has a conical shape which makes an inward force to keep it on track.

@@Idiocracy343 i thought the coneshape is for driving curves. The wheels getting pushed to the side and the bigger diameter of the wheel runns outside, the smaler inside. it reduces the friction on the tracks. Its necessary because its a rigid axle.
But maybe its both of this, a well engineered machine.

Fun fact : The wheels are conical.
The wheels aren't cylindrical but a section of a double cone which helps the bogie to manoeuvre round the curves. Flange is for change of tracks.

    • @atrium8609
      @atrium8609 2 роки тому +4

The flange is also for the wheels to stay on the tracks. And the tracks are slightly inclined inwards for the better wheel run. Clever.

Later I learnt just how much complexity and science is there behind a modern train wheel ; how exact and precise its shape is.
It is certainly not just a round, flat disc.

Excellent video...I just realised that the child in me is still enjoying the flanged wheels move over the steel rails and watch them switch tracks, smoooothly. I, however, just hope, that engineers do come up with derailment-proof design of both wheels and rails.. Even today, I get uneasy, if I am riding on train running at really superfast speeds....just a phobia though.

0:43 & 1:05 - never really understood how wheels seamlessly swtich tracks at a junction..
the engineering has to be precise..only about 50% of the wheel rim is on the track..yet at high speeds the shifting and changing tracks has to be precise otherwise such a big heavy train comes crashing..
at top speed how many rpm do you think its doing?

I'm curious the driver makes the train make the curves or the tracks themselves makes the train make the curves by itself?

The curve of the track and the shape of the wheel is what guides the train

You are just watching how steel wheels are riding 10:10 )
    Edit: but that's hypnotising :)

You should make a version of this with it hitting bumps and “It’s a Hard Knock Life” playing in the background

Good video! If the conical wheel is say 3 inches wide, I wanted to see how the Flange moves away or close to the track while on turning. If you can shoot, showing both wheels while on curve it would be wonderful
