    This truck has a special place in my heart. I had an '81, 300 I-6, and the only options were A/C and Automatic transmission. You couldn't kill that truck no matter what you tried, and as a very young guy, I definitely tried a few things. I had the same hubcaps lol. And mine was also green, with the full green interior. So I was definitely rooting for this truck.

  • @BobDingleful
    @BobDingleful 5 років тому +2

    Oh man, learned to drive on an identical 1978, complete with the inline six and green interior. I wish it was stored after we were done with it, it would be a perfect revival. When you opened the door it reminded me of the first 20 years of my life.

  • @dave1135
    @dave1135 5 років тому +59

    That truck was originally a 3 on the column. The linkage in the column would wear out. JC Whitney sold a floor shift conversion kit. My dad put one in our ford maverick. It should be over to you and straight down for first, straight up and over to the passenger side and up for 2nd, and straight down for 3rd. Reverse is straight up from first. Linkage may be rusty and sticking, need to be lubed. Also check the bolts that bolt the shifter to the side of the trans, they are known to come loose and cause the linkage to bind

    • @Thrawnization
      @Thrawnization 5 років тому +4

      The biggest culprit on these Fords was the collar on the column would wear out, mainly right where the shift handle would go into the collar. They're just cast zinc and the retaining pin holes would wallow out and it would be a pain in the butt to get it to shift from reverse/1st area to the 2nd/3rd area. Still got an NOS one stashed somewhere in case I needed it on a truck now long gone.

    • @dave1135
      @dave1135 5 років тому +1

      @@Thrawnization that's what happened to my dad's maverick. I was maybe 12 at the time, but I remember the mechanic he saw talked him into putting the floor shift in as itd be cheaper than tearing the column apart. It was fun, but seeing as it came from JC Whitney you couldn't get on it too hard or the gate and levers would flex, and there was a bolt on the side of the trans that would work loose, causing the trans to stick in two years. Dad would have to pop it out then tighten the bolt down again. I think it was awkward to get to as to why it couldn't be tightened enough. This was the 70s so not sure if loctite was around then. Pretty sure a liberal application of blue or red would have solved it. Lol

    In the mid 80's the collar on my column shift 3 speed broke in my 73' Maverick, and for the money it was cheaper to go with junky aftermarket floor shifter so I broke out the sawzall and put one in. looks like I wasn't the only one who went that route. A girlfriend had 74' Maverick setting in the weeds so I asked if I could try to get her running, She said her brother gave it to her and it would be her first car if it got running( I was 18 and she was 17)...A battery, a lead from the solenoid to the block and 3 fixed flats and I had it running before dark.That 302 ran sweat and even had AC. Gotta love the Ford 300! It's my favorite Ford engine. Swap out the intake and run a 2V carb or two or three or a 4V carb. Then do a cam swap, EFI 300/4.9L dual exhaust manifolds or headers and some porting on the head and you've got a very fun engine.
    If the transmission has three shift rods it's a 4spd. If it has two then it's a 3spd. Most of the 3spd floor shift conversion shifters were cheap junk. The shifters would get really sloppy, have bushings fail. Or the shift arms on the transmission would round/wear out. When that happened the shift rods wouldn't be adjusted right and it wouldn't shift. Since you have 1st & reverse I would say that's probably your issue.

      The vegetation around looks very well kept. So the trucks would have been that way. Does not look that bad. We have had worse in South Africa. We just picked up a ford falcon that was in the barn for 15 years we had to clean the place to get it out. This is a doctored video. I am an old timer with Ford's go back to 1957.incl the 1948 chev trucks. Don't do this .
