      Railways in USA need to get their act together.... Like literally

    • @rogers906
      @rogers906 2 роки тому +1

      Please explain. In USA as you may know after the interstate system was developed folks preferred to drive their own cars. Oh what wonderful memories I have. US does good on freight service. Old folks and those who are afraid to fly or short on cash ride Amtrak

    • @rogers906
      @rogers906 2 роки тому

      What US need to do urgently is improve domestic sir service especially some of the old airports. Even former president Trump said he was embarrassed at US airports compared to other international airportd. Air travel now is US is the pitts. I would rather drive on the interstate.

    The ALCos are a majestic icon of the Diesel engine era. The IR story till recently had been one of underperformance, thanks to lackadaisical executive leadership. These gentle giants did their best with substandard tracks, rolling stock and signaling systems. It seems somehow an affront to see them doing duty as shunting engines. But I guess a fate common to everything that ages 😊

    • @TheTrainStory
      @TheTrainStory  3 роки тому +1

      Yes…IR has suffered due to lack of Vision from leadership of officers having no or little experience in railway tech and advancements…

    What a video!! Congratulations,for your effort!! You gave me Good Gyaan!! As a 54 yrs old, I come from a generation, where I have seen all the three locos of Indian Railway. As a child, I used to commute between N.Delhi,to Pune. Upto 1975-76, There was no direct train between two cities!!
    A 'poona bogey' used to start from Pune,sorry,Poona,piggyback in Maharashtra express,upto Manmad,where, that bogey' used to get attached to Punjab Mail, coming from Mumbai ( sorry Bombay)!! All the locos were Steam engine's!!!
    In 1979, first Marathi rail mantri,( Madhu Dandavate,whose brainchild was Konkan Railway) started Jhelum express( Primarily to move troops from Pune cantt. To Jammu Cantt.)!!
    It came with your Alco diesel locos!!! I still remember,Pune - Delhi distance of @1600 k.m. would be hauled in 23 hours flat!!
    ( In 2021, same train takes @ 30 hours!!) Now, electrification 'upto' Pune is complete!! Beyond Pune, to go to Sangali or Solapur, you need an ALCO!!! PATHETIC SITUATION!!!
    I UNDERSTAND,HUBALI JUNCTION IS STILL NOT ELECTRIFIED!!!
    For development in Indian Railways, you need your areas 'Rail mantri'!!; THEN ONLY, DEVELOPMENT WILL COME ( Bihar had the Highest, & Most Corrupt Rail Mantri's)
    So, Karnataka should send A Rail Mantri for full electrification of HUBALI JUNCTION!!!
    What do you think!!!!

    In Portugal we have the Alco Rsc3, they started service in 1948 for the fast trains to and from our two main cities of Lisbon and Porto. Yesterday I saw a pictures of one of them still operating with the maintenance operator SOMAFEL, the Alco 1525, and it looked beautiful, therefor 1502, 1507, 1511, 1512, 1525 are still running and 1501 witch is on the national railway museum at Entrocamento and it still works. So it has been 73 years since they started working and they´re still going...these locomotives will work for "eternity".

    Also three things.
    1. There were quite a few facts I didn't know, eg. I never knew that ALCo locomotives had dynamic braking or turbochargers.
    2. There were quite a few other minor ALCo classes which were not successful eg. WDM3F.

    Great video. The ALCO's surely had a decent variety of horns. I will miss them when I go to India next time.
    ALCO's are machines from the past in the USA. But, there are still some yard shunters and heritage railroad lines that use them.
    The most common locomotive diesel locomotive type here are the GE AC44 for freights and GE P42 or EMD F59PHI for Passenger trains (although these are being replaced by the Siemens SC44 locomotives).
    Electrification is sorely lacking in much of the USA. I hope the new infrastructure deal has a plan to electrify some key passenger rail lines outside the Northeast Corridor (California and Washington, I'm looking at you). The ACS64 could be used to its full potential.

      @@TheTrainStory Yes they are going to use diesel for rail link between neighbouring countries. But as for branch lines, if electrification isn't a priority, they are replacing conventional passengers with DEMU sets. It makes the running both easier and better. As for NFR, it will be electrified soon. Diesel locos will always remain there for shunting and for emergency purposes.

    Alco made good steam locomotives. But it failed to switch from steam to Diesel in US and soon met its demise in the 60s. That it why it sold its technology to India. It found a sucker.
    GM was the market leader in US. They were not going to transfer technology to Indis. Transfer of technology works for the seller when it is at the end of the lifecycle and another sucker will buy it. It is like selling your used goods at a tag sale.

    The interesting story here is that long after Alco went out of locomotive business in 1969 with the closure of its factory in Schenectady (NY), the line of locomotives was steadily improved in India and brought to the modern age. I just don't know why they (mostly) kept the high front hood that reduces visibility for the crew and requires two people to watch the track ahead. Besides the dual cab WDM3D mentioned there were a small number of low hood locomotives but I don't know whether they are still in regular service.

    • @TheTrainStory

      The low hood locos are used as experimental examples or for shunting duties. Mainline locos (except WDM2 Jumbos) do not have low hoods
