@@grimreapers thanks haven't seen that one lol was hilarious! I also take a few different pills every day😅 so I can relate. Yeah your pretty efficient at downing missiles but The SM-3 is on a whole other level ;)
I have a long/detailed valued viewer request, but it's in an effort to help with the research and suggest a fun scenario while hopefully cutting down on the research needed.
I'm not sure exactly what's modeled in DCS, but I've listed most of the known assets available to the US military to counter missile and air-based attacks. I'd be curious to see how the air defense works at varying levels of attack size and difficulty based on a few common types of targets.
First, there would have to be a disclaimer of course, as the most modern software (dozens of upgrades over the past couple of decades to radar tech, fire control systems including Aegis land & sea, the expansion of data link compatibility among both US and NATO forces, etc.), missiles (the latest hardware and software upgrades to the AIM-120, Patriot missiles, AIM-9, and even stingers), or equipment (multiple hardware and software upgrades to the Arleigh Burkes/CSG as a whole, and I believe some of the missing units in DCS would be the Stryker M-SHORAD, Bradley SHORAD, etc.). With that said, the fun can still be had, so here's a general game plan.
I'll list the current US assets below and you could use the closest variant (or perhaps cheat a bit and use a unit from any other DCS country/era if it serves as a close analog to the US unit within DCS).
1. This concept would warrant multiple videos in a series, so perhaps each video can represent the type of US target being attacked. The first video could be: "US/NATO FOB Defense Against Missile & Air Attack." The second video could be "US/NATO Large Base Defense..." and a third video could be "US/NATO Large City Defense..." and a final video could be a grand finale: "US/NATO Theater of War Defense Against Missile and Air Attack."
2. Within each video for the different sized NATO targets, you can start simple just like this video with an attack of 12 cruise missiles listed as difficulty level 1a, and perhaps difficulty level 1b can be the 12 cruise missiles in addition to two attack jets and two fighter escorts. That first video against a NATO FOB would likely only need attack level 1a/1b to result in large damages and be a tactical victory for the OPFOR, and it would show how devastating air power can be without great intelligence reports and ample warnings.
3. A level 2 attack could increase the OPFOR missile/air asset quantities. Perhaps at level 3, you can play with both the size of the NATO force while also expanding upon the enemy attack by adding more complexities, such as time-on-target missile attacks using different azimuths and adding different types/quantities of incoming missiles/helicopters/jets. Equally on the NATO side, you can play around by increasing the size of the defensive force and adjusting the surrounding assets in the region based on the list of anti-air stuff below.
A US Army BCT for reference purposes, is about 4,500 men, and then depending on the type of BCT, a mixture of several hundred light/medium transport vehicles, Stryker IFVs, Bradley IFVs, and Abrams tanks all armed with a .50cal HMG, autocannons, 105mm guns, 120mm guns, mortars, ATGMs, stingers, and Hellfires. Then there is multiple heavy weapons infantry company, air combat bridge detachment (Apache’s, Black Hawks, Kiowas, UAVs), engineering, medical, intelligence, logistics, artillery, and air defense companys attached to the Brigade as needed.
Actual US Assets Available, to Try and Replicate in DCS
- Stinger MANPADS: a few hundred per Brigade Combat Team, but the amount actually issued and available for a random attack at any given time would obviously be pretty low. Perhaps a US Army vet can help, but I imagine the defensive forces of a FOB would have around 20 close enough to use if they heard incoming air attacks?
- AN/TWQ-1 Avenger (Mobile Defense): I imagine these are deployed on mobile operations due to being mounted on a Humvee in addition to being deployed as a static defense when needed and were also used in Crimea by NATO forces multiple years ago. The current configurations are either 8x Stingers or 8x AIM-9X along with a .50 MG. The AIM-9X version is used for C-RAM, C-UAV, and cruise missile counter-defense. A near-future variant will employ a point-defense laser and replace the .50 with a 25mm autocannon.
- JLTV M-SHORAD, Stryker M-SHORAD (Mobile Defense): Per Wiki, both are mounted with remote weapons stations containing: "four Stinger and two AGM-114L Longbow Hellfire missiles, 30 mm M230 chain gun, 7.62 M240 machine gun, and a 360-degree search radar system."
- Centurion C-RAM Phalanx w/ 20mm High-Explosive Incendiary Tracer Ammunition (Static Defense): Per Wiki it has a 1.5 km effective range and "In 2008, there were more than 20 CIWS systems protecting bases in the U.S. Central Command area of operations."
- Medium Extended Air Defense System (MEADS, Mobile and Static Defense): I doubt the US Army ignores the use of this since it offers defenses while mobile, a range of at least 40km with 8x interceptor missiles per truck-based launch vehicle. More info per Wiki: "MEADS provides ground-mobile air and missile defense with expanded coverage. MEADS is the first air and missile defense (AMD) system that provides continuous on-the-move protection for maneuver forces. MEADS system elements can seamlessly integrate into each nation's, or NATO's, combat architecture as required. The same capability lets MEADS move with ground forces and interoperate with allied forces.
MEADS incorporates the Lockheed Martin hit-to-kill PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) missile. A single MEADS battery is able to defend up to 8 times the area of a Patriot battery through use of advanced 360-degree sensors, near-vertical launch capability, and the longer-range PAC-3 MSE missile. The MEADS radars - using active phased arrays and digital beam forming - enable full use of the PAC-3 MSE missile's extended range."
- NASAMS Battery (Static Defense): No idea on how many is used/deployed besides the confirmation that they supplement the skies over Washington DC and are now in Ukraine. Based on deployment to UA, I imagine the DoD deploys these along with US troop locations too. The latest version combined with an elevated radar system or datalink (use of datalink confirmed per public info) has a reported range of 30+ KM for the AIM-120s and the latest version also includes AIM-9s for closer range and higher maneuverability.
- Aegis Ashore/THAAD Battery (Static Defense): A battery is 3x M1120 HEMTT Load Handling System mobile heavy vehicles with each vehicle carrying 8x interceptor missiles and they have their own radar trailers. Publicly reported range of 120+ miles and a role "designed to shoot down short-, medium-, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles in their terminal phase." The mission role combined with the Aegis reference leads me to believe they have the capability to shoot down incoming missiles if they're within range. Known deployments include Poland and Romania with potentially more.
- Patriot Battery (Static Defense): I believe at least one battery would be deployed and within range to cover any major/semi-permanent base and they would also be data-linked. This is just a question of whether the missiles would have time to intercept any incoming attack based on the location you select (for example, we know Patriot batteries are deployed in eastern Europe at a minimum with multiple other EU/middle eastern/Pacific sites rumored). Is there a way to cheat DCS and artificially datalink all these assets by telling the missiles they can see and attack anything the AWACs can?
- F-15/F-16/F-18 Combat Air Patrol: I imagine virtually all NATO offensive missions and sizable FOBs or cities and bases in hostile regions will always have CAP in the air. I suppose the minimum would be 2x jets flying CAP with a standard loadout of at least 4x AIM-120D and 2x AIM-9X each, but I would personally want 4x CAP jets with additional on standby for scramble purposes. If there was any type of ~4,000-man offensive or convoy underway, I imagine the USAF/USN would deploy more, but that is not my call.
- Aegis Weapon Systems at Sea (Static Defense): These would only play a role when the attacks are close to the ocean/sea and a US CSG is in the area, but it would be fun to watch if they had any impact from that distance in DCS. The SM missiles have quite a lot of range and are fast, so I'm not sure if they would respond or not to an inland attack even if it's within their range.
Former German Air Force ECR TORNADO WSO talking here. I flew against NASAMS 1 during exercises in Denmark and Norway in the early 2000"s in the "Wild Weasel" role. S.O.B. of a system! Hard to locate AN-MPQ60 Radar, impossible to spot the launchers pre-engagement. We called NASAMS infested areas " a mine-field for fighter jets"... Had good relations with the norwegian NASAMS operators though! We spent many hours dicussing SAM vs. SEAD tactics over many pints of expensive norwegian beer... Good times!
@You Tube if Russia was defending against American imperialism, Kremlin would be ashes by now.
That is freaking awesome 😎
@You Tube your comment is incorrect
Russia is not defending themselves in any way. Instead they are making offensive attacks on territory that isn't theirs against people that aren't soldiers, for reasons that are falsely promoted by Putin. There are Nazi's, but that is no reason to involve one's self in another country's issues. It's like if the U.S. had a terrorism issue and to solve that issue, Canada rams their way to overtake Washington D.C.. it makes no sense.
Fuck Putin 🖕🌻
Fuck the Kremlin 🖕🌻
Slava Ukraine 🇺🇦
Justice for peace loving anti-war Russians 🇷🇺
@You Tube Huh? Those are Norwegian-designed and built missile batteries using American-made, but not American deployed aamraams. No American imperialism anywhere to be see here. Don't delude yourself. Europe is standing up to Russia. The Americans and British are involved in Ukraine, mainly because they were one of the signatories to the 1994 Budapest Memorandum which stated:
1. The Russian Federation, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United States of America reaffirm their commitment to Ukraine, in accordance with the principles of the Final Act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe, to respect the independence and sovereignty and the existing borders of Ukraine.
2. The Russian Federation, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United States of America reaffirm their obligation to refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of Ukraine, and that none of their weapons will ever be used against Ukraine except in self-defence or otherwise in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations.
3. The Russian Federation, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United States of America reaffirm their commitment to Ukraine, in accordance with the principles of the Final Act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe, to refrain from economic coercion designed to subordinate to their own interest the exercise by Ukraine of the rights inherent in its sovereignty and thus to secure advantages of any kind.
The Russians are a pack of thieving, cheating liars, and should be driven out of Ukraine using all necessary force and aggression to push them out and keep them out. Russia is only interested in Ukraine because of the oil and gas deposits discovered in Ukraine in 2010 by Exxon, especially in the eastern portion. Putin is a mafia boss who needs to be captured, tried on at least two of the four main charges at the Nuremburg War Criminal Trials, namely 'Crimes against peace', 'War Crimes', 'Conspiracy to wage aggressive warfare' and 'Wanton destruction of cities without military necessity' and executed publicly.
@You Tube Russia is only stealing from peaceful country's. May Russia come to a flaming and Screaming ending! Horribly!
NASAMS battery in a nutshell:
- Up to 12 launchers with 6 AMRAAMS each: 72 missiles
- Up to 8 MPQ-64F1 Sentinel radars
- 1 MSP-500 electro-optical sensor
- Launchers and sensors can be dispersed up to 12 miles
- Distributed, networked architecture providing "graceful degradation" of the system:
Will operate even if multiple sensors are taken out
- Missile launch in 10 seconds of detection
- 72 missiles can be launched in 15 seconds
- Single radar has a 120 KM detection range and can track 60 targets
- Can engage targets up to Mach 2.9 and 69000 feet
- 25-30 KM range with AIM-120B/C
- 50 KM with the new AMRAAM-ER
- Can be integrated with IRIS-T and AIM-9X
- 1/10th the cost of a Patriot system for 72 vs. 32 missiles
(obviously Patriot is superior in some capabilities - built for a different mission)
- Future system will have the GhostEye MR GaN-based AESA radar (in testing):
Will greatly increase performances
What they need to do is try and link them using Starlink. That way the launchers can be basically anywhere and not restricted by distance to the targeting radar. That way you can really disperse the launchers, esp if you have multiple radars in the network.
Interesting
What's the defreance between Patriot?
@@stevennicovich8547 They are working on this
Great info. How many batteries of Patriot and NASAMs would Ukraine need in an ideal world?
Greetings from Ukraine. Thanks for the video, seeing it gave me a little optimism. I'm tired of hearing the air siren every day. By the way, when a missile is shot down, it is very loud. The blast shakes the windows even if it is very far away. I have been dreaming of NASAMS in Ukraine for 4 months now. I'm glad that the United States started talking about them. You may know that several Ukrainian pilots in the United States have now spoken to congressmen about training on American planes. Everything goes to the F-16, but Ukrainian pilots really want the F-15. Maybe you can make a video on this topic. Sorry for the bad English. God save the Queen.
Excellent English as far as I can see. :)
@@Jess_star123 Great English, better than most Americans from what I see. OP, hope you’re safe and all is well for you (as much as that’s possible).
The old F-15s that they may give away are wore out, you don't want them. Any new ones are going to the USAF. The F-16s will do you well they are much better at ground attack than the SU-25 you have now. The first group is done with training out at Luke AFB and the planes are delivered and went into service a few weeks ago, it's not getting a lot of press but they are there. More to come, this will take time. Russia sucks you can beat them. Stay safe! All the wolds prayers are with you.
Stay safe 🇺🇦
@@zooweemama911 Better than most Americans... All too true...
Hey Cap. NASAMS actually does have a datalink system that is more or less the same one used to command AIM-120s when launched from an aircraft. As a result they have midcourse correction capability and potentially some limited retarget capability. The issue is the system has very short legs so its unlikely that a retarget opportunity will exist in most circumstances.
As for the missiles used; only the Finnish and Australian systems are equipped with MIM-120C-7 the American, Spanish, Norwegian, Dutch, and Omani systems are all slated to use the MIM-120B based on the arms exports register although it is likely the American system has been updated with the MIM-120C.
Interesting, thanks
America is set to upgrade to the AIM-120D in the near future.
@@imjashingyou3461 The AIM-120D has been in service since 2016. NASAMS uses the MIM-120 which is modified for ground launched and so far only the AIM-120B and AIM-120C-7 were modified for this role. Nothing is stopping someone from converting an AIM-120D but that has not happened yet
@@LordOceanus I know. I've seen a number of other articles on how the US is upgrading its NASAMS missile to the D variant in the near future.
I do belive Norway also has it since the system is made by Norwegian Kongsberg. NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System)
Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System. Or National in US. From Kongsberg KDA : "NASAMS is designed to evolve with the development of technology and can integrate with or utilize future technology when available. This can be future active or passive radars and sensors, Sense & Warn capability, and a wide range of effectors, like C-RAM, C-UAS and the Raytheon Family of Missiles; Aim 9X Sidewinder Block II, AIM-120 AMRAAM an AMRAAM ER. The evolution is enabled by the open architecture in the FDC."
In the US several NASAMS were used to guard air space over Washington, D.C. during the 2005 United States presidential inauguration, and are used to protect air space around the White House. ----> Wikipedia
Which part of this required Norwegian input? I know that they have some good missile systems, Penguin is the first that comes to mind, there's also this, but what is their secret sauce such that we're doing it with them instead of by ourselves? Hey, maybe Penguin or other anti-ship or multi-role missiles can be used as well, just drop a few of these cells on some reefs or atolls somewhere, network them and poof, sea control/area denial in a box.
@@nichevo1 C2, launcher, comms, and general system integration.
Not really any hard limits preventing either country for going it on their own, but some times cooperation is mutually beneficial 😉
proud moment in DCS the other day. I'm very new, bought the SU-33, and got a gun kill on a F-14 in 1V1 using my keyboard only. Can't wait to get my HOTAS sorted

I'm a new fan from Tucson Arizona, in the states. I love dcs and I love watching your videos. The variety of missions and other war games that you guys play keeps things very interesting! Be well and take care my new friend.
They did the same thing with Sea Sparrow. The exception is that Sparrow was already a shitty air to air missile. Putting it in a box launcher didn’t help much. We used to call it the Sea Chicken.
The Evolved Sea Sparrow is excellent though.
lols
Always enjoy the RC/Super Cap tandem in the Tomcat:) Yet another entertaining edition
NASAMS Missile Systems (and targeting arrays) have and use Mode 5 IFF. Those upgrades were made by Kongsberg and NATO in early 2021.
Ukraine got their first 2 batteries of NASAMS today - With more coming over time in the coming weeks.
The FCU/FDC's decades ago, as we were tought in the RNoAF, were by that time integrated with the L-70 autocannons and the Robot 70 MANPADS. But as described in the other comments here, the sky is the limit.Active, passive, CRAM, Sidewinders, you name it. Interesting system. I really don't know if it even has a finite lifespan, it has been around for ages.
The system has been updated so much that you wouldn't recognize it at all 😉
I have to say there is one major issue with the simulation, 12 out of 12 hit their target, seeing we know Russia's missiles have a 20%-60% failure rate, that is unrealistic.
+ human error
+ equipment malfunctioning
during 99 war in Serbia (Yugoslavia), serbian soldiers sometimes forgot to arm their missiles so basically they sent 10m spear into the air, bad communications,...... it is a war plenty of things can go wrong
ultimately the biggest cause of poor performance is NO TRANING, a soldier without training is not a soldier it is a civilian with a gun who can shot a target the size of the house at the range of 100-200m.......... bad SAM operator is to slow or make to much mistakes while operating any task,.... TRAINING is the key
I think the not so well performance of Russian soldiers is this exactly, lack of training
Citation needed for failure rate
@@nagantm441 "The United States assesses that Russia is suffering failure rates as high as 60% for some of the precision-guided missiles it is using to attack Ukraine" ~Reuters
"U.S. intelligence reports suggest about half of Russian cruise missiles have failed" ~Bloomberg
"Particularly in sensitive cruise missiles, air-launched cruise missiles, and they have also suffered a not-insignificant number of failures of those munitions. The best estimates we have is about 40-60%. Either they're failing to launch or they're failing to hit the target, or they're failing to explode on contact." ~U.S. Department of Defense March 21, 2022
@@ShionWinkler ah so propaganda. Cool.
@@nagantm441 Ok, as a Russian Troll I know you have a hard time with English. The word you are looking for is Reality, say it with me I know you can do it, Re-Al-i-Tee.. The word propaganda is used to describe what your country puts out tovarishch... Try to keep the two words straight. 👍
Kalibr-Ms have the option of a supersonic kicker that accelerates the missile on the final stretch, increasing its defense against SAMs. I don't know if DCS has anything like that, but if it has it could be an interesting test.
It would also be interesting to see a test against a strike aimed to take out the defense systems themselves. Since cruise missiles can take roundabout paths, the strikes could simultaneously come from several directions, reducing the SAM system's effectiveness, which could be exploited to overload the defense and take out the SAM launchers.
I think the cool thing about the NASAMS system is that you can just keep adding more radars and launchers to the system per the needs of the situation. Also, each radar operates independently and even if several radars are destroyed, the system can keep firing.
The anti shipping versions of Kalibr (3M54E, 3M54T, 91RT, 91RU) have the supersonic sprint capability which is in effect a second rocket stage that hurls the warhead at the target form within 20nm. The land attack versions are pure subsonic cruise missiles. Russia has been seen launching anti sip missiles that have been converted to land attack but the conversion removes the second rocket, warhead, and seeker. Really its just fitting the front of a land attack missile to the motor of the naval attack missile. The only true dual mode cruise missile in the Russian inventory (as in does not need ground work or a specific version to target a ship or land target) is the P-800 Oniks which is supersonic along its entire flight path and has a third the range of the land attack Kalibr missiles.
It would miss the target anyway
The aggressor has shown that it is not capable of pulling off any kind of advanced tactics like that and you would put SAM sites all around a city to prevent that.
@@thedausthed would be a fun scenario for entertainment though. But yes, Russia doesn't have very many cruise missiles left in stock and sanctions have greatly reduced production. NASAMS should make them waste the rest of their cruise missiles if they launch any more.
Pretend you have a CH-47 or an MI 8 and can sling load the radar onto the roof of an apartment block. We used to put out Q36 Firefinder as high as we could get it in Mosul.
Very interesting. I think you're right, in that NASAMS is good against cruise missiles and strike aircraft, whereas Patriot is specifically designed to take down strategic missiles (which approach at huge speeds), and I think that would include hypersonic cruise missiles such as such as Kinzhal.
Having problems getting Patriot to engage Kinzhal in game: ua-cam.com/video/cnrVxqL5q9w/v-deo.html
Patriots were designed for intercepting ballistic missiles.
Correct - Patriot was designed to shoot down things that are high and fast. Hopeless against $1000 drones plodding along at 90 km/h!
@@grimreapers Aegis/Standard? French Aster? UK Starstreak? THAAD or GMD?
GR, Kinzhal is, IIRC, just air-launched Iskander missile. Sub in those.
@Rune Børsjø are they purely AMRAAM missiles or have they had boosters strapped on? The latter is common and easy/straightforward.
Wow amazing video. I think this makes the most sense for the NASAMs. best to use them to protect the cities of Kyiv, Liviv, Odessa. Then push Ukrainian BUKS, TOR and OSA to Eastern Part of the country. Really need a series on what SAM systems should be placed in Ukraine particularly western Ukraine. Other thing is what systems could be used to defeat low flying aircraft using terrain masking. This seems to be the order of the day for Russian military.
Blimey, was thinking of asking whether u could do this scenario…. And here it is! Apparently they can engage 72 discrete targets at a time!
It would be more effective if the SAM sites were further apart and further away from the target.
Loved watching the F14 following the cruise missiles ! Awesome 👌
Grim, love these cool scenarios! Please keep them coming. Wondering, do you have direct communication with WinWing? I would like to order the Orion2 HOTAS F-16EX but it's a little concerning that their site shows the kit is "Out of stock/Restock at unknown". It seems that customers can place an order but with no expected delivery time.
I will ask them now.
Unfortunately, we don't have any direct pipeline to the stock situation at Winwing. We are sponsored by them because of our vids, and we do some reviews, but that's about it. We know their pre-order system appears to be working and it's much better than waiting for the odd restock, then pounding on your computer with the hopes of squeezing in an order. Tony, their USA rep can be found on the HOTAS/SOSAS/SIMPIT forum. You may want to ask there.
@@grimreapers Thank you sir! Appreciate the response.
NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) is the world’s first operational Network Centric Short to Medium Range Ground Based Air Defence System. I bet it would. :D
I have actually seen one of these batteries in the DC area. It is so small and compact that you would hardly think it was a serious weapon system.
Nice scenario. Effective battery. Too bad it wasn't sent long ago. I wondered if they would be affective against yesterday's nukes. I realize they were supersonics.
Cruise missiles are super slow and by that easy to interecept IF you got any kind of means to do so.
In general NATO wars are so easy regarding the bombing part, because they slaughter borderline helpless countries with a massive bombardement campaign - then lose on the ground anyway, because the just turned a whole country into chaos and defiance against them with their slaughter.
@@miriamweller812 NATO is a defensive organization.
First NASAMS, next we should give Ukraine another excellent Norwegian 🇳🇴 weapon system, the Naval Strike Missile (NSM). That would make the Russian Black Sea Fleet want to crawl into dry dock. Any idea if the NSM will appear in DCS anytime soon?
Thanks for all the entertaining videos. Slava Ukraine! 🇺🇦 👍
Will show up I'm pretty sure, there is no backing down this time. no way
How long does it take to rearm the launchers? Are the boxes preloaded like HIMARA or are they like GRADs that have to be hand loaded one missile at a time?
A skilled crew reloads quickly.
The canisters are not preloaded. The rails can slide back, allowing the missile to be loaded by crane. Plenty videos / pictures on the net
The P/K of those NASAMS is mind blowing, basically it seems like if there is 25% more AIM-120’s in the AO than incoming targets none will get through
agreed
So what range standoff do you have to have to successfully engage NASAMS from the air? What do the Russians have in that line? I guess that SDB will hit from those ranges but Russia doesn't seem to do JDAM let alone SDB class weapons.
You want to sweat US war stocks, sweat the number of JDAM kits in stock and on order.
Thanks GR!
I think they will be quite decent.
But there are so many other issues, with artellery, tanks, infantery, MRLS and other things, that need to be dealt with
Looking forward for that nasams vs. cruise missiles battle!
Dont forget the later nasams can also fire the AMRAAM-ER which I believe is an evolved sea sparrow rocket motor with an AMRAAM seeker
First! Love the content lads, appreciate the technicality and humour wombo combo!
thx
Does that mean a swarm of smaller decoy drones accompanying the missiles would most likely create an effective screen for the actual destructive missiles?
in theory I would say yes, but keep in mind those drones should have sufficient fuel and thrust to be able to follow these missiles along, so most likely "smaller decoy" might not really apply here ...
Also radar should be able to differentiate between them based on size and speed. Though I'm not sure if this particular system has that capability.
No one would just shoot a swarm of cruise missiles over a battery of anti air defense and hope enough get through. Those NASAMs would be the first targets and you would use all kind of other meassures for example also electronical warfare to get them.
Cruise missile are an especially stupid choice in that case, because those missiles are slow and fly a long way, what gives anti air systems a long time to detect them and shoot them down.
@@miriamweller812 my friend usa has done this alot takes on avg 3 anti missile munitions to destroy ine missile most battery’s hold 4 so if you throw enough at the enemy they will get through
As said previously could you try with iron dome just to have the experience performed. Thank you 😊
10:00 also don't forget that this was danger close to an ally, so maybe more care was taken with locking (if the AI can even do that)
Really cool video. I counted 10 getting through in the barrage of 48

I forget what its called… but the AA system mounted on the Humvee, with the 4 sidewinders ( like they have in Washington D.C. on occasion)
I would think would be of some use as well. Certainly portable to cover hot spots/ threat areas.
Avenger?
@@nichevo1 yes thats it, Avenger
@@p99guy NASAMS would seem a further step up from Avenger, Stinger < Sidewinder < AMRAAM. Whose range costs more to extend, the rocket or the guidance? Seems like you could stick these everywhere, on every ship in a convoy for example, if they prove out. And be throwing them out of transports. All networked, that is the key.
NASAMS integrates what's called a high mobility launcher (HML) which is essentially a humvee based launcher similar to the avenger concept
Ive found the Roland ADS to be very good at intercepting low level missiles

I have no idea of the signal range of the radar/control units and the launchers, but it should be possible to put the radar on top of a building.
I love this man, thanks for making my day mate

looked like the highest time they missed was when it was trying to shoot missiles close to you, maybe your profile was confusing their tracking while trying to lock those close missiles?
A form of air defense systems yet to be seen, drone constellations. They fly up into the path of incoming air threats, like an airborne minefield. They can also be reused and recharged.
I think Nasams performed really well.
I'm impressed 👍!!
Around 2:10 I have this thought. Can you include the price tags of the systems you feature? War must include economic analysis. Edit: around 3:50 :-)
Scenario suggestion. Variation on Kerch attack. 4x 2k LGB/INS vs western side main span support columns via 5th gen while simultaneous Himars/M270 barrage on Sevastopol Russian Navy docks and in port ships. Splitting the ability of the S400/300. Both are primary defensive RF assets subject to saturation of air defense which, the if delivered as promised by NATO and US 20x (8)Himars(14)/270 =32/168 missiles for a total of 200 in-bound ballistic tracks in a single ToT volley aimed at the Navy while just a couple of 22's/35's drop the primary span supports should be basically impossible to stop attack. Should be fun for Cortana to do. Throw in as many other diversionary ToT attacks as necessary to keep the RF looking west away from Kerch. Proper off line of primary attack diversions.
How about a combined amphibious assault on Sebastopol for all the marbles?
Cap, when you’re in F6 view following the missile, how do you suddenly stop following it and watch it all the way to target like that at 4:34 in the video??
Sorry if it’s a stupid question
This is very exciting to see since Australia will be acquiring up to 6 Nasams 3 battery's. I've also heard that we may also be attempting to have quad packed ESSM's in these too.

Can we get a video of today's US fleet vs Russian fleet in the Mediterranean with and without hypersonic missiles? Really curious about that..
US military exercises against NASAMS batteries, 22 superhornets on SEAD ops were shot down by the NASAMS batteries without the hornets ever detecting let alone finding a NASAMS missile battery let alone a search/track radar.
nice
Context is important. Were they testing out their SEAD strategies, or where they testing out NASAMS?
@@honkhonk8009 well they were using traditional SEAD tactics against NASAMS which doesn't work like other traditional surface to air missiles
Not terribly surprised. If properly networked with external track sources, the system is very difficult to deal with for opposing SEAD sorties.

Slight correction to this video. NASAMS pretty much 99% a Norwegian Product. Ratheon provides Radar in some systems and Missiles.
99% is a bit harsh, but yes, the overall design of the system, concept development, and most components are indeed Norwegian
For ballistic missiles, they should use THAAD or PATRIOT.

We need to get them in there.
Idea for the next wargame: In the Black Sea, Crimea provides a big geographical advantage, as it is defended by S-400s, houses the naval base at Sevastopol, and is a safe staging ground for armored assaults. Could Ukraine launch an airstrike on Crimea while being aided by a HIMARS/M270 strike? The idea is that Ukraine uses targeting data from US satellites and soft teams on the locations of S-400 launchers and ships docked in Sevastopol to launch a rocket artillery strike, followed by aircraft/helicopters finishing off any remaining defenses and armored vehicles, opening the door for a potential ground assault.
Will attempt but lots of moving parts there.
@@grimreapers I'm sure you can do it!
What kind of war stocks must exist at Sebastopol complex? I bet they have magazines dug down to the center of the Earth. But what actual cargo throughput can they manage, in and out of Crimea? By boat, bridge or air.

@@alberthenriette8976 That's why I suggested there to be MLRS used on the S-400, so no aircraft are risked. Did you read my comment?
I have wondered during some of the sims on this channel, is there a way for an aircraft carrier to launch it's munition stores without the planes.
This was similar in a way.
I don't think so. They travel in carrier groups surrounded by missile cruisers to prevent the need. If you are desperate enough to attempt to fire air to air missiles from the carrier deck, the carrier group is probably already lost.
@@acephantom903 Agreed.
But how many times have we seen a crippled carrier limping away after a battle on this channel. Plenty of missles in it's magazines but no way to use them.
Just a thought experiment...
@@Squirl513 Oh, you mean in the game? Definitely not an option in the game without modding. I don't know if you can put SAM batteries on the deck. The British equivalent to this system is Sky Sabre firing ASRAAMS.
Nasam will protect against cruise misiles.
Key to protect important city lives.
+GrimReapersAtomic *NASAMS is a usable SAM complex for the U.S. / Raytheon MIM-120 medium range missile. Beware Pitbull, as the MIM-120 cannot distinguish friend or foe anymore than the AIM-120 air-launched version.
While technically true, the supporting data before the pitbull phase is typically a lot stronger from a ground fired engagement compared to an air launched one. (More sources/sensors, more manpower). So the ability to ensure an AMRAAM going pitbull on the intended target is pretty good.
Let's just say this has been a more than average concern for the Washington DC system (which is part of homeland defense, and typically operating in a WEZ filled with dozens of airliners)
Are the cruise missiles that the Russians have used against Kiyv and other targets launched from airplanes or from ground sites in Russia?
Maybe try nasams and cram in an iads next.
Yeah relatively cheap, good at slow-moving targets close by. Believe it wont perform well against anything hypersonic though. The big question is the training and positioning of the system.
There is no known hypersonic missile defense technology now. So it is obviously not gonna perform well. :D

A fleet of cruise missiles is like 7-10 billion dollers, atleast the agm 86b's were. Not sure about these. I cant exactly get a price per unit on them because idk what number constitutes as a "fleet" of missiles, i cant do the division on it.
Tomahawk was always advertised as I think $1.3MM per or perhaps $1.1MM. those may have been older figures, but on the other hand with steady production, the cost might have even dropped over time.

I think they have IRIS-T SL around Kyiv now. It’s kind of an open secret!
pretty sure they still have to be supplied by Diehl Defence, but the German Government has already given the Thumbs Up for delivery into Ukraine.
I suspect something was brought in under the radar (pardon the pun) the us sent MPQ-64 radars shortly after reports of multiple intercepted cruise missiles fired at Odessa were reported. It seems kinda odd to just send the MPQ-64, also depending on the version of NASAMS it can fire IRIS-T, AIM-9 and AMMRAM-ER assuming it’s version 3.
